Some ppl are so darn rude! Lord help them! My hands down to Jonathan for such a brilliantly beautiful elegant strong Powerful True LOVE song! Bless his heart for he knows of true love ❤️
I don't care if this song is live or studio it is gives me goose-bumps...it makes me feel happy, sad, reflective, thankful...all at the same time...music,body, mind and soul...that is what a great song should be and do...
I have an Mp3 player with a zillion tunes on it and it was playing away on shuffle as I drove down the highway in an Ontario blizzard. This song started playing and I had never heard it before (or at least I thought). I couldn't believe what I was hearing. His voice just blew me away as it rang over the simple guitar melody. It was a version from the Telluride Bluegrass festival Reflections Vol #1 Cd. The sound quality is excellent on the cd version.(It seems I bought the LP in '72)Thanks
For those interested . The tuning is open D with the capo on 3rd fret. The tab/chord is very simple #1) open. #2) 5th string 2nd fret and #3rd string 1st fret. 3)slide up 2 frets. then back to #2 then open again. Just do a simple Travis style picking and your good. The incredible voice is a little harder to pull off.
Jonathan has a rare gift to turn a song into his.... He's help several great writers, and these great songs may not have reached our ears. Roger Halifax ns Canada
On the money. I'm a old folkie gtarer and singer and this was in my 3rd set, when my 'fans' were kicking back and wanting to feel some music. But, i quit performing and lost this song. Great songs are like great friends - they don't forget you and to bump into this brought on some pretty sweet memories sc
I've always loved this song.Gee way back when he used to play in Kent & around northern Ohio the audiences were so much more respectful, sign of the times.Of course I understand that it was the music of the day so we were more atuned.I still get a thrill hearing him play.He has that golden voice and man when he blows his harp! I miss the old days I guess I'm just getting old and every passing generation clings to it's youth.I've played guitar now for 38 years and this is the music I'll stick with
I have loved this song since I was a young teenager in the 70's! I'm glad I got to see Jonathan Edwards in 1981, at a place called The Chance, in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. I was a student at the time at SUNY New Paltz! The concert was magical! I did make one mistake-I tried to take a picture, and the bouncer almost took my arm off, and threatened to break my very expensive Minolta X-G1! Thank God, he only took the film! Peace, BobbyK
Lisa - right on. When I'm in bed, trying to go to sleep, and my brain won't shut the hell up, I play this, with harmonies and extra verses (winging it as I go) and I feel my body relax and my heart slow down and can hear her whisperin in my ear again---and it's all okay. Steve
possiblly the most under appreciated acoustic artist to have performed in the last 30 years - the J.Denvers, the M.M. Murphys etc got their days in the sun but Jonathan's always been there, making beautiful music for those of us that loved it and him so much - thanks Jonathan for all you've done for music. sc
After making two of the greatest albums of songs ever done, he decided to spoil it by becoming a Jesus Freak. Another one bites the dust. Bob Dylan did it too but he got over it.
WT you nailed it. great music makes you FEEL your memories, not just remember them - and at a holistic level - all the way down. It's as much my therapy as it is my pleasure to let myself get lost in a beautiful song like this, even if just for a moment. sc
Grey - very astute and comprehensive observations - music was evolving at an extrapolative rate thscru the 50s, 60s, and 70,s, and while I'm not tickled to be drooling on my pillow at night, I would not give up living in and thru these changes for anything. sc
At 41 seconds some one says " shut up and sing it" it make Jonathan smile, he obviously knows who it is and it look as if he might say somthig back but sings. I have love his music since the first album witch I go back to often.
Indeed... I do sometimes think of that certain someone from college in 1972 (sigh). We spent hours listening to Jonathan & Dan Fogelberg, "convinced" we were the only two live souls on the planet. There goes that heartstring again...
I know your comment is 15 years old, but Willis Alan Ramsey is another great one. Check out Angel Eyes. And Wasted Too Much Time by B.W. Stevenson. And a ton of Beach Boys songs are right in that beautiful, poignant style.
Thanks, friend! I saw Jonathan in concert in 1981 when I was attending college upstate at SUNY New Paltz. I saw Jonathan Edwards perform at The Chance in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. I think he sang "Lady" acapella without a microphone! How I remember this is a small miracle in itself! Sincerely, BobbyK :+)
I agree -except you left out Croce. Who happens to be the only one of the afore mentioned who wrote all his own songs. I have a vid somewhere of me doing "that's what our life is" - I'll see if I can find it and post it.
@JACKIEMONSOON That A hole "from the audience" you refer to is, in fact, Jonathon himself, having a little fun out of the corner of his mouth. Somehow makes him even more delightful.
How amazingly rude of the person in the audience who yelled: "Shut up and sing!" Jonathan loves to explain how certain songs came to him! They should have removed the possibly drunk, unkind man promptly from the room Sincerely, A Jonathan Ewards fan since I was about 13 in 1975! BobbyK
bobby - if you watch the vid closely you'll see it's Jonathan himself that leans away from the mic and says, "Shut up and sing it" and the crowd laughs with him - what a stud he is, huh. Steve
@helenschmelen Ah, I seem to understand your point. For me, I just find solace in who Jonathan Edwards is, he plucks an emotional chord in my heart, whether it's w/ his music or his tales. He's a brilliant person, and it's interesting to learn his story if you haven't done so.
That's cool. I'm a big fan of all 3 also...just hated to see J.C. left off the list..lol. J.B. and J.T. also wrote and co-wrote alot of tunes made famous by others. Next time you hear Take It Easy by the Eagles, listen to the lyrics - thats J.B. PS-great taste in music dude!
@helenschmelen You're obviously not a fan. It's not just about his music, it's about him as a person, and how many can relate to him... through his stories, music, rants, etc... If that requires him speaking, so be it.
@helenschmelen I'm not trying to be his friend either, does it stop anyone from listening to him ramble? No. People that see him or listen to him are fans of the musician, not just of his music. That's like telling me you bought an album just for a single song, and out of the many times you listened to that album, you only liked the song itself, and had no appreciation for the artist that created it? If you're interested to know who the artist is, IDK, try actually listening to him speak...?
@helenschmelen It's totally situational. That depends on what is being said in conversation and whether or not it relates to their music. And yes, sadly that's how others view people, for their actions, no matter if they have music that tells about themselves otherwise. But how does this apply to Jonathan Edwards? He's always neutral and merry spirited, especially in his tales. His stories reflect his music and vice versa, that's why it shouldn't matter if he speaks. He is his music.
This audience was so rude and it's painful for me to hear their rudeness while Mr. Edwards is preparing to sing one of his best heartfelt love songs. I have tears for the beauty of the song and tears for the disrespect of the individuals around him.
Some ppl are so darn rude! Lord help them!
My hands down to Jonathan for such a brilliantly beautiful elegant strong Powerful True LOVE song! Bless his heart for he knows of true love ❤️
This song once meant hell of a lot to me way back in 1973. Nice to hear it again. Kind of brings a lump to my throat.
Woke to this song on my clock radio in the 70's. I was mesmerized and tearful, so beautiful.
I don't care if this song is live or studio it is gives me goose-bumps...it makes me feel happy, sad, reflective, thankful...all at the same time...music,body, mind and soul...that is what a great song should be and do...

Nice note for guitarists.
Very very nice. I miss St. Croix, I miss The Barracudas and miss the chance to catch you on Isle. Thanks for the post.
Wonderful song...
THis song gives me goosebumps
One of the most touching songs that I ever had the pleasure of experiencing. Filled with grace and simplicity.

A beautiful song that evokes a specific memory for everyone, I suspect. It does for me.
Relatability is the key factor in making a timeless song, a classic. Decades from now, people will still relate to it.
I used a line from this song under my high school yearbook picture.....1973.
An all time favorite.... keep coming back to it.... :) Beautiful
Caught Jonathan last week in Memphis. One of the greatest talents! Peace, love, and song.

Wow, couldn't have it expressed it better!
Beautiful song...
I reckon I'm fixin to cry.

Absolutely beautiful! My favourite version of my favourite song
amazingly beautiful!! thanks for posting this sooooooooooooooooooooooo beauty
Thank you, Jonathan, for the music that has sustained me for the past 40 years.
it always makes me cry
I am so sick of people that talk during a great song. go home if you don't want to listen
I'm with you, Allan. Stfu drunk lady.
Especially a song as beautiful as this.
Indeed... I do sometimes think of that certain someone from college in 1972 (sigh). We spent hours listening to Jonathan & Dan Fogelberg, "convinced" we were the only two live souls on the planet. There goes that heartstring again...

I cry every time I hear Sometimes...
he is the most underrated singer song writer of all time! Him, Jackson, and JT best of all time!
Don't forget John Prine.
RIP John Prine.

An amazing, wonderful talent .
Love the song! And he did actually say 'Shut up and sing it!' Glad I re-watched.
I reckon I'm fixin to cry a bit... the memories, the chick at college. Damn.
Jackson Browne and James Taylor wrote all of their songs. I consider 90% all.
Too bad this lost classic doesn't get radio time!
I've said this exact same thing about too many songs......
BUT to anyone hearing this performance--it belongs to Mr. Edwards.
At 43 sec some jerk yelled out shut up and sing it. Its sure easy to see who took the HIGH ROAD . Well done Jonathan!.............................
Sometimes people that yell at "stars" should get a kick in the nuts.........
Thank you, James Robb, from 6 years ago, for sharing the tuning and tabs.
@blueticecho Actually if you look closely, John himself says "shut up and sing it!"
Gary McKinnon is another great song writer.

I wish he would play up here where I am ,someone I would love to see live.

Song written by Malcolm McKinney...
This is my video...kinda of wondering why it was uploaded without asking...just found it after all these years...there's a full dvd of this...
look at that part again, it was Johathan himself who said "shut up and sing it"
