- A growing number of African and Middle Eastern migrants have been illegally entering Lithuania from Belarus. The country says it is finding it hard to cope.
Lithuania and Belarus share a 680-kilometer (423-mile) border. In many places, the two countries are separated merely by low wooden fencing or narrow ditches. Overcoming these obstacles to cross into EU territory is child's play.
Until recently, this was not a serious problem in Lithuania. According to official figures, just 79 people entered the small Baltic state illegally in 2020 - most of them fleeing the authoritarian Lukashenko regime in neighboring Belarus.
So far this year, however, more than 2,500 people from Afghanistan, Syria, Iraq and several African nations have arrived in Lithuania. Most of them came in the past two months.

The real problem here is that the EU needs to be tough on immigration. This problem will only get worse until the EU stands up to protect its borders and its sovereignty
It's not about the EU, the EU is bound by international treaties signed at UN level. This is a UN issue. All countries should contribute and help instead of letting EU/US/others deal with it.
Perhaps start by not getting militarily involved at any level on the continent would help.

Frontex is woefully underfunded and understaffed. Hardly 1000 employees(many are into paperwork's not enough to patrol the borders). It has 1/8 the manpower and budget of UK border guards and is responsible for a continent size border with a vast number of countries over land, air and sea coordinating with different national border protection agencies of multiple nations. It will have no practical effect unless it is strengthened and properly equipped. They are in the news because Lithuanian border agency was overwhelmed in the face of coordinated push from belarus and thus requested whatever support they could get from EU.

Sanctions do target the people because the Western elites believe that they can tell Belarussians that they should have obeyed the West, sold everything of value for free to the West, have your industries destroyed, have your healthcare destroyed, agriculture, destroyed, all to pave the way for expanding Western European markets. This is what they trried to do to Ukraine in 2014 - Janukoivič stopped ? US and EU forced the coup and destroyed Ukraine in the process, started the war against their own people because they did not bow to the illegitimate coup. All on US orders and EU compliance. Sanctions are meant to hurt the ordinary people, but they are meant to hide that it is the people who suffer for not supporting the coup that the Western imperial regime would benefit from - increase in territory and cannon fodder.
