Yes I had this happen. I had to toss out SO much yarn. The little devils made a nest in a tote I had mine in. But I have washed a skein of yarn by putting in a knee high stocking, tie the end and put it in the washer and dryer. No unraveling and no mess.

Mikey from Crochet Crowd did a video a few years back on this. He’s said to loosen the skein a bit and in an undergarment bag wash on gentle. But I have also found you need to add an animal sent remover. Here in the states it’s called Natures Miracle. It’s an enzyme that breaks down the animal sent.

Looks like other have given you washing suggestions. As for your yarn room, we have a trailer that we use for about 9 months of the year, the remaining months when we are not in it , I place peppermint oil in the trailer ( peppermint oil on a cotton ball) and fabric softer sheets in the locations where a mouse might enter. It does help immensely. Also with you going into your craft room often you can replace the peppermint oil often, mice do not like it. As well they do not like tin foil, aluminum tin foil. You may want to line your crafting area where they left residue with some tin foil. We do not put out traps we did but they just attract them more to come in. My above suggestions do work and helps control them wanting to come in.

WHERE did you get the peppermint oil???
I would like to place some on cotton balls and
leave them in my bulkhead to deter "intruders".

I was devastated when I discovered a mouse in my yarn space .
I washed mouse mess out of both acrylic and natural yarns . I hanked some of it up , the bigger skeins went in pantyhose tied up tight . Both worked great , hung it up , took about about a week to dry .
I used a good detergent, added baking soda to the first wash , second wash I added vinegar.
I did find a detergent specifically for animal mess on Amazon, it also worked .
There were a few skeins that weren't salvageable and were tossed .

I’m sorry you are going through that. The way we did it back home we would put it in a sock mesh type bag and wash it with vinegar a few times then with regular detergent. Hope this helps. Vinegar counter acts the pee.

What diverse suggestions! I would hank the yarn with gloves and mask on, soak and wash the most economically, dry in the sun, and wind into balls by hand to use as garden twine (if acrylic). Please no sticky traps, they contort and torture. I use humane trap mouse cubes baited with buttered toast crust and take mice to the distant woods for release. Have fun shopping for mouseproof storage containers. :)

Many hugs! They hit in secret and then spoil SO much. I wish I had some good advice for you too but I think everyone who has shared, has fulfilled the suggestions before me. If it helps with the difficulty in letting go, think about this... you get to go shopping to replace it! 😁 Even if it isn't all at once. So a bad situation could be a good one? So here's hoping that the peppermint oil and aluminum foil and all the rest of the suggestions help take the sting out of the destruction. 🤗🥰🙏 Prayers for things to improve.

I agree with all the advice below, but I would use a Tide Pod to wash the yarn. You just toss it in the washer, and that's it. Add extra rinse to the cycle. They get rid of any smells. My mom had a mouse chew through a blanket she had stored away that I crocheted for her years ago. The Tide Pod worked great. After the blanket was washed, there was no smell, and I repaired all the nibbled parts. It was good as new :)

I buy these sticky pads they are by the roach sprays and rat traps at the store to catch mice or anything that crawls and I swear by them . Just peel the thin plastic lining and place them on the floor in the corner. I have a closet where I keep my yarns and fabric and so far so good. I use these sticky pads all year round and when they get full I just throw them out and replace.

  • @denisejames855
    @denisejames855 2 года назад +1

My own experiences with mice and rats is that the smell can still be there when you have washed and dried the item. It also depends on how long the mess has been there, the longer the pee is in the item the harder to eradicate the smell. I have mostly chucked everything as after trying washing decided it wasn't worth finding the smell still there later. Vinegar is great, I use it in every wash instead of softener and also chuck some in with the detergent. Try some to see how it goes. The thicker the item also will retain more odour. Maybe Nil Odour could help that that itself can leave a smell as I once discovered. Good luck, its disheartening. My hubby recently had rats nest in his hydroponic stuff stored, had to ditch it all and we had rats on our terrace eating our tomatoes at night. This big wet we had is a big part of them being around now, now place dry to nest.

I had a cat. She is not with me anymore. She peed on a whole box of yarn. I washed it in a mesh bag. When I washed, I use vinegar and baking soda. Washed the yarn in warm water. The vinegar will also set the color. So it won't bleed on the other yarn. The vinegar will take the unrine smell from the yard. Also a squirt of blue dawn dish soap the vinegar will work. When I had my children. I used cloth diapers, when changed diapers, until I washed them. I would put them a bucket of vinegar water. Vinegar works for taking out unrine smell and stuff out the diapers. Vinegar does work.

If you have access to Irish Spring soap bars, buy them, beak them up into chunks and scatter them all over your yarn room, put it on your shelves, not in the yarn. They don't like it at all.

Uggg my worst fear Clare, we've moved into a bushy acreage property and I spotted a mouse in my house, we caught it super fast but my first thought went to my yarn room. For me luckily no sign of a little visitor in there thankfully. I read through the comments and peppermint oil seem to be the best deterrent so that's high on my grocery list. For me with the soiled yarn, I'd probably throw it out. 😪

  • @LindaCBMediaGroup

As long as it's a synthetic yarn, I'd place it in a mesh laundry bag, being careful about not mixing bright or dark colors. I'd use a mild laundry soap, and a laundry disinfectant/sanitizer such as the one made by Lysol. It also helps get rid of the odors from such stains. Definitely try to launder them before you decide to pitch them out. If after laundering them you just can't bring yourself to use them, donate them to a charity.

Girl! I feel for you so much! Wish I had better advice but glad that hasn’t happened. Not sure I’d save though because I think I’d be a bit like you and want to chuck it. So hard to part with any yarn. However if it were a luxury find like silk or some specialty one you adored then perhaps those are the ones to try to save. Toss the ones you can replace easier for sure I’d suggest. Much love from across the pond my friend! 🤗🤗🤗🙏🏻 I hope it all gets better fast. My guess is they decided to nest babies there 😩🤢

I’ve just had to deal with a mouse myself. Our mice love pink yarn. I almost cried throwing out several skeins, but not quite as bad. I had dogs pee on my yarn. I put mine in pantyhose and washed it. The yarn was ok. I didn’t wash the yarn peed on by the mice because I have a lot of yarn and didn’t want to wash it and re-wind it. I tossed about 8 skeins. I found fabric was affected more. I have to reinforce the edges so I can wash the fabric. At least 10 yards was affected. I haven’t had the energy to do the edge sewing yet- mostly cotton fat quarters, and some flannel and several yards of fleece. Cleaning the room if the smell has also been a pain. I am so sorry you have to deal with this. Hugs to you. I know exactly how you feel, except we are in spring here. Feel free to contact me if you wish. Much 💜💜 to you.

I’m in Australia, I am freezing today & also have mouse issues. They haven’t gotten into my yarn as I store it in plastic containers (for that reason) but they have gotten into our clothes before and left unsavoury deposits 😩. The only issue I can see with washing the yarn is wee stain. I’ve been able to wash the deposits off the clothes but the wee has stained the fabric. I’m not sure if yarn would stain. Anyway, I hope you are rid of the awful little critters soon 💐

Hi sweet I really feel for you, not real sure of the solution, I think it is what you feel the most comfortable with, perhaps losely rewind and gentle wash but as for keeping the little buggers out put plenty of camphor and moth balls around, (the one's in the cages) not on the yarn just around the room ,it will keep them out they hate the smell. I did that when we were away for 6 months during that peak mouse plague and never had a problem. Hopefully that may help for the future. 🫂 hugs

I had some old yarn given to me. I had some little girls tights, I put a skein in each leg and tied a loose knot and washed them. It was tight so dog hair didn't come out and the yarn occasionally stuck together. Possibly something larger would be better, like knee hi's or panty hose. Possibly soaking them in oxi- clean or a clorox 3 for a while and then washing them in a urine eliminator. I found some once from TIDE or maybe a pet store could help. It had a strong perfume smell though.

Put each ball into a sock so it won't unravel. Use a Lysol disinfectant laundry detergent & a nice smelling fabric softener & put all in a washing machine (if yarn is a washable yarn) & put it in a dryer just on air dry w/o heat. Don't take it out of the sock till you're sure it's clean & doesn't smell. Nothing beats a failure but a try.

I can't say about washing entire balls/hanks/skeins of yarn. When I dealt with this before (still an ongoing problem...) I put on some gloves, used aluminum hooks/needles, covered my lap and made a project I could wash easily out of some of the violated yarn. I still have more I need to do this with, though in my case it didn't smell like anything in particular. Honestly might just work up semi-large pieces and chuck em in the wash, then undo them.

Sorry for your problem we have had Critters in our shed and garage and could not get rid of them until I accidentally discovered that putting a box of stinky fabric softener sheets in those areas make the little guys Scamper on their way. So now every time I buy a new box of fabric softener sheets I open them up and place a box in the shed and one in the garage. Been doing this for 2 years now and have not found any signs of Critters only the nasty little scorpions. Good luck with your problem. I am so sorry that you are having to get rid of all your beautiful yarn. I also keep a fresh dryer sheet in each drawer every month except for the food container drawers. They also keep my Shoe Closet from smelling like dirty feet

Yuk.... mice!! I can't stand them! I've only ever had a mouse problem with yarn once. It chewed through a bag of yarn, but I heard it chewing on the plastic bag & scared it off, so it only nibbled one thread on the yarn, but it gave me the heeby jeebies! I've only washed a skein of yarn once in pantyhose tied up at each end. I'd imagine putting it in a lingerie bag it might get tangled. If it's as gross as you're saying I think I'd chuck it as the germs & smell would be gross!🥰 Blessings from South Australia💕🐨

Hi Claire, maybe hank the yarn, but not twist it, put it in a lingerie bag and wash it. You could try a couple and see how it works.
I think winding them in a bank would allow them to dry better.
In a ball the centre might not dry, or get washed for that matter.
Let us know how it goes, what ever you choose. But it would be a shame to throw it away without trying. Oh an lots of fabric conditioner!
    Keep warm.
Take care and keep safe. xxJane

I don’t trust throwing it in a bag as is honestly. I had that issue once but not with that amount of yarn. I just put on gloves and unwinded the skein so that it looks like the large loops yarn dyers put their yarn in to dye and washed it like that. Added benefit is that it’ll dry faster and won’t risk getting moldy or mildew if it takes too long to dry

Just been looking to see for a solution, but I think others have said it all. Really - here's what I found, anyway:
15 Oct 2018 · As long as the yarn is washable and still in skeins (or re-skein it), you should be ok. Hand wash carefully while skeined, roll up in a towel to absorb the water, and place on racks until thoroughly dry.

I lost 6 totes of yarn to mice . They chewed through the plastic and got into the yarn. I tossed it all because the smell was wretched. Two months ago my senile cat peed on 13 blankets that I had made for Rachel’s Gift charity. First I cried. Then I washed then all after soaking them in white vinegar. Washed them twice , still smelled of urine so I tossed them. I was no longer going to send them for the babies but I thought maybe donate them to a rescue or shelter. With the hint of urine it wasn’t a good idea. Animals that get adopted are sometimes sent to their new home with their blanket. I was concerned that the dog might pee on the blanket in their new home because they smelled the urine. Would never want that . The thing about mice droppings is the disease that you can spread from it. I trashed a dozen boxes of Danielle Steele books the entire collection because mice and squirrels got in .

White vinegar should get rid of smell. It nuetralizes urine of pets and people so mice shouldn’t be any different. For the floor if carpet I spray the area with full strength vinegar in spray bottle until saturated, with white towel or cloth rub the area and dry it the best you can. Let it air dry and smell will be gone, if it isn’t the saturation did not reach all the way down to floor boards so repeat the process. For the yarn it would work if the dye is colorfast, I would test pieces at different strength 50/50, 75/25 100%. Vinegar with water, lowest mix ratio that takes the smell away. Then wash with gentle soap to get vinegar out. Dawn dish soap, woolite soap, Dreft baby etc. Best of luck to you😢😢❤

I'm so sorry Claire. 😞 that's terrible. Mice are disgusting creatures. I've never had them move into my yarn stash but a couple moved into our stove. I got them with traps but not before they had dug in my kitchen cabinets. Had to wash everything. Fortunately they didn't invade my upper food cabinets. I've heard peppermint oil is a good deterrent for mice. And some people mix corn meal and baking soda set out in a bowl to kill them. Personally I don't think I could save the ruined yarn; would be hard for me to crochet with it after knowing the mice had been on them.

use a uv light to detect where they have pee'd. their pee glows in the dark. we get mouse surges here, and need to use an exterminator every couple of years, you may decide to chuck the yarn and more after using a uv light, they are inexpensive on amazon, .... pee detector flash light. I think chuck the ones you can replace, and try washing the rest. I have used odoban, or rocko and roxies enzyme cleaner, I think the enzyme pee cleaner is best, and wonderful to just have on hand if you have pets and rodent issue, and maybe the mice hate it, as well.

I just had this happen. I had a full garbage bag of cotton yarn. Unfortunately for health and sanitary reasons you need to throw it all away. And disinfect the area it happened

I've heard of people throwing the whole skein in panty hose, tying both ends and washing/drying in the lingerie bags.

Oh Clare what a nightmare! Does house insurance cover this? Probably not. I think that if you honestly cannot get past "mouse yarn," ( I don't think I could either) all the washing in the world won.t help you and best to chuck it, as hard as that may be.

Baking soda and flour and mix in crushed peanut , put in small piles in the corners, plz plz plz don't use glue traps, they are cruel... and you NEVER have just one or two...youtube has great ideas for this problem you need to fix today or you will have hundreds in a week.
