@@Eric.Poirier. I can't find it anywhere. I've been trying to buy that game on any other video game platform but i can't find it. Nice of you to reply to my comment.
Heart of Africa and Trolls and Tribulations! Love you, Metal Jesus! My favorite classic game collector on RUclips and that includes LGR and THGM. You're doing the Lord's work!
Easily my favorite gaming platform growing up. My faves: The Bard's Tale, Beach Head, BC's Quest for tires, Infiltrator, Alternate Reality. Thanks for the mems!
I grew up in the 1980's and owned a C64 from 1986 to 1992 .So many brilliant games on this classic system back in the day. Loved Wizball, Armalyte, Defender of The Crown, The Last Ninja, The Way of The Exploding Fist, Pirates!, Bubble Bobble, Delta, Hunter's Moon to name a few. Happy memories of buying the monthly UK magazine ZZAP! 64.
Oh wow! From what I can remember, my favorites were Impossible Mission, Beachhead, Zork, Hitchhiker's Guide, Castle Wolfenstein, Micro League Baseball and the Winter / Summer Games.
I loved Jumpman! And I would play that for hours. The Commodore 64 was my first computer, and I still have my original to this day. I probably have over 2000 games for it. Including Star Wars Arcade, Afterburner, Out Run, G.I.Joe, Donkey Kong, Centipede, Frogger, Q-Bert and countless others. I still haven't gone through all my floppy disks yet. Here sometime I am going to hook my C64 back up to my 27" CRT TV. All in all cool video man!
+MetalJesusRocks Racing Destruction Set was a favorite of mine. You could race different cars on a selection of tracks in different gravity like the moon, or Jupiter. It was an awesome isometric race care game.
I remember quite a few C64 games that I still love. Zorro, a platform adventure game, Raid over Moscow, and a game called Space: The Ultimate Frontier that was basically an unlicensed Star Trek game. Loved the system!
Planetfall was great, so was Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Another one of my favorites was the Lurking Horror (also by Infocom) which was loosely based on Lovecraft's work.
Paradroid was such a great game but as you said so many titles to choose from........I would say Elite but the Commodore 64 version couldn't handle the vector graphics like the orginal BBC Micro game could so it was pretty unplayable. In the UK we kinda had our own games for the C64......Attack of the Mutant Camels springs to mind and some of the ones you talk about we're released over here under the label US Gold. The disc drive was so expensive in the UK so everyone had the tape drives which took an age to load until someone came up with the turbo loader idea.........takes me back thx for the happy memories Metal Jesus.
Yeah, the C64 wasn't that great when it came to vectors, there were a couple of exceptions where they worked, but for the most part vectors weren't that great on the C64. Truthfully though, the disk drives were pretty slow as well. Thank God for fastloaders (both tape and disk), good thing a lot of the loaders had kick ass music for you to listen to while waiting for the game. The Ocean Loaders in particular made the loading times easier to handle for me.
Yeah, Elite was so unplayable I spent hundreds of hours playing that game and had nothing but fun doing so. Now to be fair, the Amiga version I had was much better.
Great video man and awesome game list. Totally brings me back to the days where all my friends had C64's and made sure to copy discs for each other, game sharing back then rocked!
I took a break away from retro collecting for cost reasons and my lack of self control, but I'm back baby! Man did I miss metal Jesus rocks. Your videos are informative get soothing and entertaining. Thank you, sir!
Space Taxi was a great game. Also Ultima 2 and Crescent Hawks Inception were my favorites. These were possibly some of the earliest examples of open world RPGs that were ever made.
Space Taxi reminds me of a game called Ugh on the Amiga which plays pretty much the same but can be played with two players, it was set in the stone age if I recall, great game and if you like Space Taxi, you should like Ugh.
christmas 1988 i got a commodore 64 with the synth program (with keyboard overlay) copy of starrion, adrian mole age 13 3/4 text game and pirated copies of bruce lee and suicide express. without doubt one of the best presents ever (apart from getting a bmx one other xmas). man i feel very lucky to have grown up during the c64 era. so many fantastic memories of gaming and that time period of the 80's that seems to be coming back now. c64 forever ;-)
I started playing this system at age 3. (1983) Ghostbusters, Park Patrol, Master of the Lamps, Moon Patrol, Grogs Revenge, Quest for Tires, Spy vs Spy 1,2 and 3, Commando, Jumpman, Jumpman Jr. Congo Bongo, Drelbs, Boulderdash, Heist, Miner 2049'er, Bruce Lee, Summer Games 1, 2, 3, Winter Games, California Games, Archon, Archon 2, Way of the Exploding Fist, Beach head 1 and 2, Bungling bay, I rocked all those games dude! Have played most of them on emulator.... Its nice to have a second chance at mastering the games. :)
I didn't really like Grog's Revenge because of the ending (it ends with you getting killed by the main villain) that's pretty unrewarding if you ask me. So when you "win" Grog's revenge, it ends up with you actually LOSING....
Wow! Thanks, My family had so many C64 games, I was watching the video and remember playing all of these in 85 86, Great Video. I will keep watching you gave me such a good feeling tonight, thanks bro
I loved Electronics Arts games: Racing Destruction Set, Pinball Construction Set, Mail Order Monsters... SSI and Epyx made some great games too. The one game I always wanted to play, but never got was Psi-5 Trading Company.
Just started watching your newer videos about two weeks ago and have thoroughly enjoyed your stuff. I decided today to warp back to your very first video and just run though them all from the beginning (loving them btw). But may I say, Sir, your above video made me feel both very old, and very happy in equal measures. Keep up the good work, I tip my hat to you 🤟
A friend and I rented this from a PC games rental store, remember those? We stayed up for 24 straight hours playing it until we beat it. Those sound effects!
Well I wasn't expecting Portal to be mentioned! Wow. I played through it a long, long time ago, probably mid 90s, when I was able to get some cheap(ish) disk only games from the US via that wonderful internet. I was rather sad when it all ended!
"stay a while... stay FOREVER!" man, this triggers so many great memories, loved to hear that! Never knew Portal, nice pick. Recommending Paradroid, a game I never understood but I couldn't stop playing due to its addictive arts and sounds. Also (naturally) Boulderdash. And also California Games and the other Games games and so many more popping up while reminiscing. Nice Episode, thanks...
Wow.. I was not familiar with a few of those. What I thought was interesting is when you mentioned "Floyd the Droid" because there was an entire game by that name with a little droid you drive around in the sewers.
Whenever I see this kind of thing, I'm reminded of what great games were available for the C64, many of which I missed out on. I feel like my youth was cheated. Seriously, this was great. I loved Ghostbusters myself. Sorry I missed out on Portal. I did have Mindshadow though. It's amazing how much having a good story behind a game can enhance game-play. Thanks for sharing this.
I just saw Pool of Radiance made your honorable mention list. Fantastic game! Being the first of its kind released by SSI, there were a few drawbacks, which were resolved in later entries (Curse of the Azure Bonds, Gateway to the Savage Frontier, etc.). Still a hell of a lot of fun and a huge upgrade from "Advanced Dungeons & Dragons" for Intellivision. Again, a game with a great story behind it.
Nice list but strange that I never heard about most the games you mention. My list as for my recollection goes, is completely different. I remember games like: Summer games, Winter games, Decatlon, Commando, Ghost and Goblins, IK+, Last Ninja, Outrun, Pole position, etc. The only one I recognize is Oil's well.
Didn't really care for the C64 version of the original Outrun (although it was better than the Amiga port) aside from the music. TURBO Outrun on the other hand, was awesome.
Insightful video. What's clear from this is that the US experience of the C64 is very different from the European experience. A list of favourite 64 games from me would include the likes of Paradroid, Turrican, IK+, Armalyte amongst many others.
Great Video - I would never forget the day when my father took me to the shop and bought C64 for me as a reward for a good year in school - definition of happiness for me. The coming holidays were probably the happiest time in my life - I was 14. Thanks for posting
Some nice mentions there - Spy Vs Spy was a fav for sure and glad you featured Jumpman...what was the name of the game where the parachuter collected shoots and money bags, using the shoots to fall without dying...still can't relocate that one from my childhood...Oh - Jesus had a beard bro. Cool vid! Impossible Mission was a true fave!
i love the c64, my uncle had one and gave it to me eventually. it was my entrance into gaming outside of an atari and ninteno. this is why METAL JESUS ROCKS!
As earlier mentioned in this thread, I'd say along with Raid Over Moscow also Henry's House, HERO, Blue Max, Frantic Freddy, The Goonies, Zepelin, and surely a great deal more.
I had gotten one long after the C64 was THE thing to own, but I had a third party Indus GT drive and it was FAST. The problem was like 25% of games just wouldn't load on it.
taledarkside I had a VIC 20.....my sad traded my 2600 for it. Sad day for me. Plus I only had a green monochrome..and I walked to school in blizzards...lol
Man, thanks for this video, brings back many memories! Bruce Lee, Space Taxi and Impossible Mission were 3 of my favorites. Never played Portal, but I do remember it. Loved the genre tho, had the Zork ones. Also loved The Incredible Hulk & Amazon, which were text based but had static cut scenes. Many of you honorable mentions were also some of my faves.
Everytime I watch this guy I have a pen & paper reader to take notes. I've had some of the systems he reveiws but I didn't kniow the best games for them. Now I know what to look for. Thank you MJR!
Actually more than 10,000 games have been made for the 64. 10,000 COMMERCIAL GAMES AND applications were made for the 64, that does not include all the games that were made that were not commercially released but still got around anyway. All the SEUCK games that got around back in the day, especially if you (or a friend) had a BBS, etc.
Adventures in Nostalgia Not including commercial games such as Planet X2, according to the CSDB there were 106 games released from January 1 2017 until January 1 of this year. That's pretty impressive if you ask me. There is also Galencia, which was also released last year as a commercial title. As well as LuftrauserZ, which was just released in late November, early December. Also Planet Golf as well, not to mention Rescuing Orc and several others
Holly crap! This video is giving me hard-core flashbacks! Do I ever remember begging my mom to buy me the 64 and so many great games. PLANETFALL!!! "Where angels fear to tread!"- Do you still have the stationary paper that came in the game package with the Planetfall header on it! Freakin awesome! I saw a shot of Bungeling Bay at the end- that game was epic. Thanks for the memmorys bro!
I was surprised to see a couple of British games in your lists (Kikstart and Elite), we used to get a lot of American games here in the early C64 days. I'd thought it was something of a one-way street, so nice to know that our lads came up with something to interest American gamers.
*Turrican II, Creatures* and *Creatures 2* should be on every C64 list. Amazing graphics, sound and gameplay. TBH It's hard to take any C64 list seriously without those games on it. Turrican II is arguably the best action platformer ever made, and the C64 version is a triumph. What an incredible game. Other favorites of mine are The Last Ninja, Barbarian II, Tusker, Speedball 2, Platoon, Midnight Resistance, Ghost'N Goblins, Ghouls 'N' Ghosts, Stunt Car Racer, Beach-head, Elite.
Uridium , Paradroid , Cabal, the disk version of The Eidolon, H.E.R.O. , Sanxion , Gribbly's day out, Monty mole ( all ), Chiller, Henry's House, Super Zaxxon, TRAP,... I just love the C64.....and the AMIGA....Best game for me on that was Captive, then Dungeon Master, Eye of the Beholder ( all 3 ), Silkworm, Shadow of the Beast, Xenon 2....I could just go on and on !
Cheers for this, I just started playing Portal today, looking good so far. I never owned a 64 as a kid as I went for the ZX Spectrum so am now trying out the other side some 25 years later!
Great video! My faves were Zork, Bard's Tale, Defender of the Crown, Castle Wolfenstein, Jumpman, Karateka, and a bunch more I'm forgetting. Used to phreak and trade one and two day old "warez". My handle on the BBS's was "Syntax".
Jim Rowell: Nope. I already play them emulated. I’m talking about remakes of the old games, with new levels and features. www.lemon64.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=65159&start=0
Dropzone by US Gold is one of the best shooters ever made. If your a fan of Defender then this is definitely for you. I would say that Dropzone is actually better! Theres been various versions but in my opinion the Commodore 64 version is the best.
I have a pretty decent retro collection but I got a commodore 64 about a month ago. Hands down my favourite vintage/retro system to own because you can do so much with it. I've been using it daily. I even have it connected to the internet and I'm 'dialing' into real BBS' and downloading games over the net to floppy. That in itself is worth it. Other than not using a physical phone line it's a great experience to relive. I never owned a c64 as a kid but during my hunt to scratch my retro itch, after getting this system I realized this is it, 100%
Just found this. Great video: Ghostbusters was my first, as it came bundled. I remember reading about Portal at the time, but couldn't remember the name (ironically, Portal by Valve is my favourite PC game). Kickstart 2 was great, had level editor, and only £2.99 in the day (about 1/3 normal price). Spellbound is worth checking out, (if only for the music) as is/was Kentilla (again, great music) and Armalyte. Great memories. Thanks.
wow, theses are pretty early c64 games didnt you play any later ones like turrican 2, barbarian, last ninja 2,flimbos quest,r type, stunt car racer, bubble bobble, rainbow islands and the brilliant ik+ (really fun multiplayer - especially in turbo mode)
I was about 13 when I first saw a Commodore 64. Was visiting my older cousin in Chicago and ended up spending most of the trip playing games on the C64. The depth of the games was so much greater than what I was used to on the Atari 2600. A few months later my cousin packed up his computer and all his games and sent them all to me for my birthday. Playing Archon, Archon II, Boulderdash and Mr. Do was part of my daily routine for years afterward. ^.^ Legacy of the Ancients is one of my all time favorite RPGs; would love to see a remake of it today with modern computer graphics, but it was and still is awesome on the C64.
Love me my C64... got into it in 1988... and still own it... it was some of the best times of my life playing that thing! gave a big "like" on your video too... great job man and hope all is well! -- Brent
@ilikepieism - The C64 has a cartridge slot, but most games were actually released on floppy disk, so you will eventually need a 1541 floppy drive to play the majority of games released for it.
Oh, man. That Ghostbusters game coming up first was great. I had an Atari 800 then an XL, and I played that game forever, back then. That really takes me back. Thanks for the vid, MJ. A number of these games were also on pre-ST Atari computers.
Bruce Lee, too. Toys 'R Us always used to carry all the DataSoft games, like Goonies and the one for which I'm forgetting the name, where you're a pig in a basket that gets pulled up and down, to shoot balloons with arrows, I think to avoid a wolf? That was a great game, too, but obviously not great enough for me to remember the name (but the dev), 30+ years later...
I know this video is ancient. But I had to mention one of my faves. Project Firestart. It totally impressed me with how it pushed the c64 hardware and was just so engrossing and scary.
Raid Over Moscow was one of my favorite games growing up, along with Raid on Bungeling Bay, Will Wrights first video game. Thanks for the memories.
Space taxi was my all time favorite! I thought nobody else remembered that game till this video! Wow, I played that game for days and days!
I feel you my man ! It's my favorite too !

Henry's House is a real hidden gem for the c64
best thing about the commodore 64 is waiting 10 minutes for the game to load.
That's where the Epyx Fast Load cartridge came in handy.
I had gotten one long after the C64 was THE thing to own, but I had a third party Indus GT drive and it was FAST.

Not including commercial games such as Planet X2, according to the CSDB there were 106 games released from January 1 2017 until January 1 of this year. That's pretty impressive if you ask me.
There is also Galencia, which was also released last year as a commercial title.
As well as LuftrauserZ, which was just released in late November, early December.
Also Planet Golf as well, not to mention Rescuing Orc and several others
Still having commercial title releases.... Amazing!
So many memories and great games on this system. Amazing how many seem similar to current games, like Kikstart 2 and Trials.
How could you leave out Archon? And Hardball was probably the best sports game of its era.
Hardball was one of several high quality Accolade sports titles- 4th & Inches and Mini-Putt are great as well
Patsfan 34life
Also Fastbreak. Great basketball game for its time
Wizball was pretty awesome too (the C64 version that is)
Henry's House is a beautiful little game!
Bruce Lee and Impossible Mission were two that kept me happy for a long time, nice explanation that went with them.
Uridium, Sacred armour of Antiriad, Wizball, Bounder, Sanxion, Delta, Barbarian, Armalight....
It's actually spelled Armalyte
Cheers for this, I just started playing Portal today, looking good so far. I never owned a 64 as a kid as I went for the ZX Spectrum so am now trying out the other side some 25 years later!
What about 'Fort Apocalypse' !?
absolutely agree
classic game allright
Great game, although in my opinion...the original Atari 800 version was far better
Great video! My faves were Zork, Bard's Tale, Defender of the Crown, Castle Wolfenstein, Jumpman, Karateka, and a bunch more I'm forgetting. Used to phreak and trade one and two day old "warez". My handle on the BBS's was "Syntax".
I remember many a curse word was shouted during Impossible Mission
My C64 favorites that I still play today, and would love to see remaked, are Bruce Lee, Impossible Mission and Frantic Freddie.
Just emulate them
Jim Rowell: Nope. I already play them emulated. I’m talking about remakes of the old games, with new levels and features.
www.lemon64.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=65159&start=0
Larry Bird and Dr. J One on One, Wing Commander, Super Huey and Radar Rat Race.
Man great selection. I still playing LORDS OF CONQUEST What a Game !!!!!
Caveman Ug-lympics???
That was my friend Jack's favorite game.
Some of my favorites were in your honorable mentions. Elite, MULE, Bungling Bay, Racing Destruction Set, and Pool of Radiance.
Dropzone by US Gold is one of the best shooters ever made. If your a fan of Defender then this is definitely for you. I would say that Dropzone is actually better!
Theres been various versions but in my opinion the Commodore 64 version is the best.
The Atari 800 version of Dropzone is even better than the 64 version, not surprising because it was originally written for it.
Love the video! I was addicted to Ghostbusters, Impossible Mission, Jumpman, Oils well, Zork (you didn't mention), Below the root (didn't mention)
I definitely support "Bruce Lee" and "Jumpman", but seriously? No Boulder Dash?
Boulder Dash was great...but it didn't hook me like these other two games...
Well, fair enough, I was just disappointed it didn't even appear as an "honorable mention." Still, all types make a world, right?
I agree on Boulder Dash!
I agree on Boulder Dash, played it for hours and hours. Also I had an affinity for Kokotoni Wilf.
boulder dash was the first game i played and still a favourite of mine
@TeamRocketReviews - Damn! That's a great list. I can tell you really loved the C64!
Impossible mission was MY Game
KPCarter2000 I recently picked up the Nintendo DS remake...and it's good! Check it out!
MetalJesusRocks Does that have both original and remake versions? The PS Vita one does.
I could never come close to beating it.
I agree! - It was my favorite game as well. I loved how the layouts changed and you had the feeling of a new adventure each time you played.
Impossible mission was cool!! but Raid on Bungling Bay was my favorite.
I never owned a c64 as a kid but during my hunt to scratch my retro itch, after getting this system I realized this is it, 100%
Karateka, H.E.R.O, Zork, Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Archon II . . .
HERO is just an Atari port....
Thanks.
wow, theses are pretty early c64 games didnt you play any later ones like turrican 2, barbarian, last ninja 2,flimbos quest,r type, stunt car racer, bubble bobble, rainbow islands and the brilliant ik+ (really fun multiplayer - especially in turbo mode)
aah, IK+ the only fighting game with a "drop your pants" mechanic! :)
Flimbos Quest is overrated
wow, cant believe I hadnt seen this before now, so much content created over the years.
Beach Head 2?
Agree 100% and I like Spy vs Spy as well.
WOW! I forgot about the voice on impossible mission. Thanks for the blast from the past. 🤘
You bet!
Paradroid. All other games doesn't matter.
agreed
wwek woo, week woo, booka booka booka booka. weeer weeer werrr crrrrrrrrrr.
Awesome video. I enjoyed the Epyx Games series like Summer, Winter and California Games. Last Ninja , Cinemaware games and much more.
TEST DRIVE? WHERE THE F$^K IS TEST DRIVE?
Flo Tenace loved that game, although I was terrible at it
Flo Tenace that was shit
Did not hold up over the years.... Sorry
Thanks for the retro flashback man!!!!! I've spent a lot of time playing and programming on my old C64!!!!!!
We owned a c64 so glad it's dead it sucked cheap crappy games that were unfair
Bwaaaaaaa!
Your entire family tree sucks
um?? no , the games were brilliant ! your comment is weak sauce
***** Even the graphics kicked IBM's ass for it's time. During the heyday of the C64, IBM had CGA graphics with it's ugly four color palette.
I think the original OP meant 'crappy games, that at least gave some sort of challenge'!
We just ordered a commodore 64 and an SD card reader. It looks like a lifetime worth of fun to check out all of it's offerings!
That, my friend, is one hell of a list. Look forward to next post from you.
dude, this video is like 6 years old
Space Taxi was SOOOOOO good. I can't tell you how many hours I sunk into it.
Great list. Wow. Raid over Moscow. One of my all time favorites!!!
Boulderdash? Tau Ceti? Good selection anyway. Long live METAL!
-- Brent
Ghostbusters!! I remember going to my friend's house to play that on his 64! Oh such a cool game.
That was a great game, too, but obviously not great enough for me to remember the name (but the dev), 30+ years later...
you uploaded this on my birthday. and i love comadore 64. so great of a system
Racing Destruction Set was my favorite, loved using the moon for big jumps.
I know this video is ancient. But I had to mention one of my faves. Project Firestart. It totally impressed me with how it pushed the c64 hardware and was just so engrossing and scary.
Jumpman, Ghost busters, Impossible Mission, Oils Well. I remember playing this all the time.
