Hamas, founded in 1987 during the First Intifada by Sheikh Ahmed Yassin and others as an offshoot of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood, is a Palestinian Sunni-Islamic fundamentalist militant organization and political entity. Its charter calls for the destruction of Israel and the establishment of an Islamic state in historic Palestine. Gaining popularity through resistance against Israeli occupation and extensive social services, Hamas opposed the Oslo Accords of the 1990s. It gained significant political power by winning the 2006 Palestinian legislative elections, leading to a violent split with the Fatah-controlled Palestinian Authority and resulting in its control of the Gaza Strip. Hamas has been involved in numerous conflicts with Israel, marked by cycles of rocket attacks and military responses, and is considered a terrorist organization by many countries, although it retains support among parts of the Palestinian population for its social programs and resistance stance.
