Change is possible but sometimes it feels dwarfed by archaic governments, greedy corporations, and refusal to adapt and change because it’s “uncomfortable”. I really challenged myself to become much better about going zero waste and recycling and reusing. I wasn’t as thoughtful as I am now and even if it makes a tiny tiny difference I’m glad I do it. If everyone did it we could see the needle move!
@@Alexandra_Wolf fr! Corporate capitalism seeks short term profits at the expense of the long term. Humans are so destructive. It’s definitely important to each do our part, and work together to keep businesses accountable. I can’t believe how hard it is to avoid single use plastics, and even the use of other fossil fuel products. It drives me crazy how wasteful the people around me are, too-I can’t even make a dent! But even if everyone was more mindful here, it wouldn’t even make a difference in my immediate town anyways because we have an oil refinery and mines, etc that account for most of the pollution in the area. I think one of the most destructive things we do is destroy wetlands, which counts against us on many levels (on the small scale, looking at Venice really puts things into perspective). I think as time moves forward and more people get on board though, we could certainly put a stop, and even reverse, some of what we have damaged. I’d love to see us do something about reducing landfills and returning those areas to wildlife habitats. So many things!
White people living today are not responsible for what happened in the past.
Old growth trees should be left alone. Preserving land and protecting our environment should be first priority, not greed, land grabs, asserting authority and harming not only our brothers and sisters in the process, but our children and children's children. Gender is more fluid than most of us were taught and indoctrinated into. It only benefits those who want patriarchy to continue. It diminishes those who are two spirited or gender non-conforming. My prayer is that nature will become our priority and that people will not only be accepted but embraced for who we are. Unique and wonderful.

It is true that oppressing this broad group of people is part of upholding the patriarchy. Trans validation solves the gender equation. Trans bridges the gender binary, and breeds equity. It is necessary for a healthy society to have the entire spectrum of genders and nongenders.
I'm native and my tribe does have a term for "2 spirits" but from what I've seen lately nowadays it's been kind of twisted and misinterpreted to represent something else.

But from what I remember my grandma telling me, it was usually used as term for a man who through certain circumstances found himself performing women work/duties like basketry, religious ceremonies or jewelry in contrast to being a farmer or warrior.

All of the Americas have amazing indigenous stories and words of reflection everyone should hear. I wouldn't be here in Canada, one of the world's greatest countries without the indigenous. To deny them is to deny the lands that we use.

@@ReignCharger saying native society is ridiculous. The cultures of North and South America were not homogeneous and varied greatly the same way European societies and cultures varied. The cultures of Central America were extremely hierarchical and were responsible for vast deforestation along with genocideand slavery. The cherokee confederation sided with the confederacy during the war to protect their culture of slavery. The thousands of bison that were driven off cliffs at a time when a tribe could at best use a few dozen is not in touch with nature. They did what they needed to survive if that meant massacreing a rival tribe that's what they did.

This is so true ancient Mesoamerican cultures like Mayans & Aztecs had a god that was represented as having qualities from both genders. Most natives both women and men also kept their hair long and it was forbidden to cut it. Cutting your hair was actually a punishment for some. When the Europeans arrived they changed the views of everything and started giving things labels, names and enforcing what they thought was wrong. Because of this today long hair in men is viewed as feminine in parts of specially in parts of Latin American were sadly most older ppl minds are still stuck in a colonial times bubble

Dr Myra Laramee may be a education PHD since 2013 but she made up the two spirit term in 1990, 23 years before she became a doctor. Very misleading to imply that something she did two decades before college, was done by a doctor. And let’s be clear that she completed a education doctorate, not medical.
The term wasn't made up, it was translated. Why would there have been an English word for something not allowed to be a part of 'western' society in the first place?

It doesn't matter that the two things aren't directly related to each other chronologically, I still address him by his internationally recognised title. We therefore do the same for a PhD and their title, even when speaking about them in the past tense.

Justice for indigenous people
Non binary and transgenders have existed for THOUSANDS of years in indigenous cultures. So many christian conservatives who are anti-LGBT think its some new concept, when it is not. Some examples:
Indian Hijra
Polynesian Mahu and RaeRae
Japanese Wakashu
Buddhist Pandaka
Replace “Christian conservative” with Muslim and you get the same thing. 🤡

It was *coined* by someone. Meaning the term was around since the 90’s not the actual TWO SPIRIT PEOPLE. No one had a word for what they felt, and someone eventually came up with a word to give them pride and power

I understand that there is such things in the native cultures as two spirits just as there is in Egypt the reason why the men often wore wigs to represent their feminine side but this was an inner dialogue and generally had much more to do with shamanism and esotericism far more than it had to do with being what we did today called transgender. In other words they did not have gender identity dysphoria
But rather they had a deep deep understanding of both masculine and feminine energies
not every tranperson has gender dysphoria.
It goes to show how our concept of “masculinity” and “femininity” is just a social construct, changing over time, differing from place to place, etc.

@@miliba you know there were over 562 different tribes in the USA, totaling about 60 million strong while also inventing many innovated ways of agriculture and introducing many new things to the colonists, they even had ways of self bathing and cleaning themselves that the colonizers hadn’t yet figured out. The only reason they go wiped out was betrayal, pillaging, and diseases brought on by the colonizers from Europe, instead of using diplomacy with other human beings with just as developed language, the colonizers acted out of self interest, just bc you have guns and ships(also not originally invented by European cultures) doesn’t make you an all around better society, it makes you a more violent one with a false sense of superiority in the world just bc you have white skin

If they want the extra competition of doing co-ed, they could. In fact it would probably lead to higher pay for women because playing in co-ed leagues would generate more advertising revenue.

I live in Arizona and have talked with many tribes peoples here overtime and almost all of them would agree and say the say same about identity politics in general. it seemed identity politics itself is unnatural to many Natives.

I'm not super knowledgeable about non-cisgender perspectives/identities (aside from male drag entertainers who parody grotesque women - analagous to blackface performers in mistrel shows a century ago). Eh...... I think that's a fraction of a "true leader" and what makes one. Being smart enough to not put your people in danger is a big one you left out... you covered fighting, defending, violence etc but a true leader has a higher level of awareness and less ego. They pick their battles and use intelligence and intellect as "weapons" they don't lead their people into a battle they can't win
