I’m from Medellin. I genuinely believe the police came to check on your safety. These local sector cops work for these organizations. If it was a military raid/police raid. They usually do them early morning. Either police spotted you from the jump or someone called them out of concern. They see a foreigner/tourist going deep up in the Comunas past the tourism zone with the local gang members. This will raise a sign of concern. As you can hear Topo tell him that they are inquiring about you. Police aren’t dumb neither, they know you probably doing an interview with the gang. They don’t want to risk a headline of a tourist getting killed in the main tourist hub of the city. Don’t want to dirty that reputation. Good decision to run either way. Keep up the quality!

@@nick.1 You do know this guy is speaking English out loud on a bike with a camera right? Not only that but over there they can sniff out who is from there and who is not. Also, over there the gang members have their own way of dressing/mannerism to the point there’s a term/saying “chirrete”. He’s definitely wasn’t behaving or dressing like one. People know who is from there and who is not over there. Maybe in another certain country he does stand out like one.
To much of a coincident that they got there as he was filming. It probly cross their mind that he was the one who could have informed on them. I know they must of been tight that they probly lost some of there merchandise. It is wat it is.

I’m Colombian I was born in Medellin, I currently live in miami.. this video was very educational for the rest of the world to see.. that was the tip of the iceberg .medellin’s underworld is way crazier, like they missed showing the brothels and the crazy trafficking of under age women the list goes on.. crime in that city is rampant.

That's a lot of years in a jail in a foreign country if get caught, and yes you can argue you just doing an interview but that's a lot of money for lawyers and still have to sit there where anything at any moment can happen. Never let anyone put you in a situation where you risk so much. Amazing work, glad you make it out good. Stay safe.

Some of the hills are quite steep in Medellin. It's fairly high in the Andes and the city itself is in a valley. I turned down an invitation to ride on the back of a local kid's bike because the hills were about 45 degrees.
Almost certain that the reason the police came is because someone told them you were there. They would have arrested you and taken you back to the station and forced you to pay a very large bribe, or they might have wanted the publicity and promotions etc they would get from arresting an Australian in a barrio. I think you're very lucky to escape that situation and also that the dealers didn't blame you for the drugs that they lost, running was a very good idea. Maybe don't stay too long in one go in places like this because it gives the officials the time they need to get organised. Would be better to film over several days for an hour at a time.
I hope your friend got out ok and maybe don't go back to Medellin because those guys might want their money back.
As a Colombian, I thank you Spanian, for finally showing to your fellow citizens and to the world the drama that my people suffers because of drugs. Hopefully after this a couple of them will stop laughing about it when they talk about how fun it is to consume it.
