How to remove a broken VVT Solenoid with a slide hammer

  • Vvt solenoid broke inside the head. It’s a plastic piece, I bought a screw with a diameter of 1/2 inch was about 2 inches long. Screwed it in with an impact driver as far as it could go. Then I put a large pair of vice grips on the screw and attached the vice grip handle to a slide hammer and it came out in 3 tries. Very easy with the slide hammer and vice grips.

    2006 Corolla , I accidentally broke the connector and while trying to remove the vvt, IT broke. NOW I have the same problem. I will try this method.

      I don’t have room to use a slide hammer on my Honda. In my Honda the broken VVT is on the passenger side of the engine block, I have about 3 inches of room.

      @@ColinOKeefe-xh4ex , I twisted in a lag bolt for like wooden decking, put a big washer on it, and used a 2-foot pry bar I bought at Lowe's. Small pry bar did not work, but the 2-foot pry bar against the washer on the lag bolt worked like a charm.

      @@hommedammn7132 Cool. For anyone finding this video in the future with a similar problem...what worked for me is, first, need needle nose pliars to get the piston out of the center of the solenoid. It should slide out easily but might need some twisting. The piston is 10mm, so you need something slightly larger...a 7/16" lag screw would be perfect, but those are hard to find if they even exist. I couldn't get a half-inch lag screw to bite. I ended with a 3 inch, 7/16 bolt. To get that to bite in, I had to taper the end with my belt sander. Then I ran, I think, a 10mm die a couple turns onto the tapered end to restore some threads. That finally worked.
