- Carl Sagan - Pale Blue Dot
Transcript:
From this distant vantage point, the Earth might not seem of any particular interest. But for us, it's different. Look again at that dot. That's here. That's home. That's us. On it everyone you love, everyone you know, everyone you ever heard of, every human being who ever was, lived out their lives. The aggregate of our joy and suffering, thousands of confident religions, ideologies, and economic doctrines, every hunter and forager, every hero and coward, every creator and destroyer of civilization, every king and peasant, every young couple in love, every mother and father, hopeful child, inventor and explorer, every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every "superstar," every "supreme leader," every saint and sinner in the history of our species lived there - on a mote of dust suspended in a sunbeam. The Earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors, so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds. Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the Universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity, in all this vastness, there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves. The Earth is the only world known so far to harbor life. There is nowhere else, at least in the near future, to which our species could migrate. Visit yes. Settle, not yet. Like it or not, for the moment the Earth is where we make our stand. It has been said that astronomy is a humbling and character building experience. There is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly with one another, and to preserve and cherish the pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known.
This is probably the most beautiful thing I've ever heard. Every time I hear it, it's still just as powerful.
Couldn't agree more.
Absolutely
I also couldn't agree more.
I have been looking at this almost every day lately. No one can drive it home like Carl Sagan. Hauntingly profound.
Well said.
This is the most important video on youtube.
This is a truly powerful, exceptionally deep and utterly timeless piece of spoken word. This should be played in classrooms and on the TV from time to time, when the world needs another reality check.
I post it every week on my feed. People need to understand this message.
Matt Reisser
Good on you. I post it regularly myself.
It's good to listen to this At least once every week. It puts things in perspective.
Commissar Rand Well said and wholeheartedly agreed!
I show this to my high school classes four times a year. First day of every quarter. They need to understand how vast the universe is and how trivial most "problems" really are.
This part always stops me in my tracks and tears swell up:
"On it, EVERYONE you love, EVERYONE you know, EVERYONE you've EVER heard of, EVERY human being who EVER was...lived out their lives."
Think about that! This little tiny dot has seen the lives of every person in the history of humanity! Just no words could ever get me past that fact and that our small fragile planet is special and wonderful in so many ways!
Thank you Carl Sagan!
be humble for you are made of earth, be noble for you are made of stars.....
Ken Strom Hear hear.
As Carl said, we are star stuff
This should be broadcast globally once a month
Trivia: Voyager 1, which had completed its primary mission and was leaving the Solar System on February 14, 1990, was commanded by NASA to turn its camera around and take one last photograph of Earth across a
great expanse of space, at the request of astronomer and author *Carl Sagan* .
The other side of planet Saturn.
Thanks!
Does anyone know where the audio is where Sagan describes how the Pald Blue Dot transpired?
No one should have the right to mute this video!!! Its a sign of pure evil, greed, and selfishness....
For March 2, 2022, the best part of this is:
Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors, so that, in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of this pixel on the scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner, how frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds.
Of all the remixes for Pale Blue Dot, I love this one the most because it maintains the image of Earth at the vantage point from which Carl Sagan was inspired to write. Simplistically brilliant!
We miss you, Carl
Perfect...Best on RUclips...Nothing else shown except for the "Pale Blue Dot" for 3 minutes...Which is all I wanted to focus on...Bravo.
The fact that the audio has been muted on this tells me there is no hope for humanity
Dammit WHYYYYYYYYY
well, now it's restored
turn the volume on
🙃
Periodically watching this video always makes me stop in my tracks and analyze everything in a unique perspective. Human trifles are trivial considering the vastness of space, and upon considering our elegant existence we should be so happy for so often forgot despite its alluring nature, because of the numerous distractions on earth. I'm often overwhelmed upon looking at stars in the clear night sky. Those experiences are truly tranquil, the sensation is remarkable and anxious feelings like "Late paying the rent" are then laughable in the cosmic reality that surrounds us.
100%!
I visit this often. I can't say it gives me hope as much as perspective.
Best version of this on youtube. It really helps you feel what Sagan is trying to convey.
Nothing makes you feel tinier than this.
But fear not, for if we can set aside our differences as human beings, we could eventually make it away from our pale blue dot!
No matter how many times I listen this ,still sounds fresh reminds me every living thing was valuable on this planet
This video helps to calm down in certain situations
The most humbling video I have ever seen. You will be missed Carl.
I love the way he pronounce "superstar" and "supreme leader." He had another and different wiev of it than the most of us...
Brings a tear to my eye every time I listen to it. Just beautiful, the rhetoric in which Carl Sagan speaks is nothing short of eloquent.
this is the best tribute to earth this is the original video not the other on youtube that are diferent
There are other videos with Sagan's speech but this is the one I always come back to. The use of the Cosmos theme in the background is perfect. By total coincidence this was posted on my birthday. That has no relevance at all but my brain did alert me to it, so there you go :). I'm glad this video is still around.
I cannot believe this was muted for copyright. Whoever forced the muting Prof. Sagan's words is not a friend.
This changed my life in 2014.
+Syd J Same. I actually cried for half an hour after I first read the quote.
For me 2016
you're cute
i wish more people would watch this, and then actually ponder it for a while
This is an ultimate message from a very pure soul to the soul of humanity. It is simple an elegant message which human beings never heeded and acted upon through out our history. This is the core of the message we were given by all the sages, Sufis and the prophets of the past.
We do not have a choice now but to come to this path if we want to have a humane future.
As it is, we've spent our history killing each other over the presentation/wording/language/attribution of the message. Imagine if, at some point, we'd stopped long enough to actually listen to it.
Happy Birthday to Carl, who would have been 77 today...he made a difference on this pale blue dot!
Wow. This should be compulsory viewing in ALL schools, parliaments, military establishments, prisons and (especially) churches. We're all in this together so we either get on - or perish.
Especially churches, bcuz there's nothing worse than the crusades. There's nothing worse than nuclear bombs.
Can't comprehend it? It's a simple message, it just needs to reach people.
Wow, way for copyright holder to ruin what was hands down my favorite video on the Internet.
I could listen to this on repeat all day long for the rest of my life. So incredibly humbling.
Jeff Thrasher . . . And yet still uplifting somehow.
Is it only me that finds tears streaming down my face as I listen to this?
Nope..... Gets me every time.
And I too
same here
Vashie Vash Every time.
yes
How can someone possibly dislike this? It has to be one of the most humbling speeches I've ever heard.
i showed this to a christian on omegle just now, following a debate, and they made a quick exit as there mind had been blown i just want to leave this message here in hopes that this person might see it again some day and if so i want to tell them this,
i wish you the best of luck stranger, the best of luck!
In the year of 2016, it has become all the more troubling to realize that most of this message has been lost to time. I can only hope for the future, and that it holds better tidings for mankind.
And that is what is at stake here. Our ability to live on planet Earth. Its our only home.
Let's just be happy with the ones who'd rather listen to this! Knowing well over a million people have been touched by these words, and have changed their lives accordingly, is a relief enough to me.
I vote to not switch photos in the middle. I was sort of meditating on the dot while listening and the switch brought me out of my reflective state. I doubt you can change a video after the fact though, maybe you can I have no clue! Sorry just being picky because I love it and want it to be perfect. Thanks for posting!
1. We live on it.
2. It sounds more appealing to the ear.
3. "The only home we've ever known."
that's deep man brings tears to my eyes
Ever so often - I just need to listen to Carl Sagan. Many times it is forgotten that this is our home, as it was for those who have passed on. We need to embrace all that is here. And...
if we do continue on - I hope to see Carl Sagan.
Maybe .... Someday ...... mankind will have half the insight that Carl had. I miss you my friend.
Every now and again I play agame with myself, a few drinks and watch this, see if I cry, if I ever win I'll have to doubt my humanity...
This man is someone that all the Earth should look up to and try to be a little more like. Truely my greatest hero.
The fact that people are jumping on you like a pack of wild dogs proves Carl Sagan's point about the ease of which the inhabitants of this spec of dust can easily self destruct. Why not respect the opinions of others? but then again, why should we if the destruction of another gives us that miniscule feeling of self importance and victory...
How about we torch every "National Anthem" and the equivalent found around the globe,, and play this instead?
Let's get to work on the translations!
Start with ALL religious scriptures, total nonsense, bluff & false promises, prayers & laments, curses & threats...
National anthems often declare 'loyalty to land of birth' and that sentiment is kinda adorable!
I emailed the link to the UN for the attention of Bank Ky Moon (not sure I spelt his name right) when he was head of the UN and suggested it be played at the beginning of each UN session or country leader's speech to remind them of their responsibility. Perhaps unsurprisingly I got no reply.
This is wonderful. Thank you for posting it.
Some of you may find it a bit unusual to know that things such as this actually strengthen my religious beliefs. I firmly believe that religion and science exist to accomplish the same goal: to seek the truth. The only time they are in conflict is when on eor another is doing what it's not supposed to (and let's be honest: some of the adherents to either have been guilty of this).
Very touching and influential speech. One of the best I've ever heard!
Our biggest achievment...is visiting the moon...our biggest achievment...at that distance the moon is not visible. Let that sink in a little bit....just a little bit ...
These magnificent words backed with the haunting Vangelis music make this one of my favorite things on RUclips
Just love this..Carl Sagan was 'the man'..EVERYBODY, when they have a contemplative moment, should watch this video..It puts it all in perspective...!!
It reminds us of who we are in a vastly enormous universe. It quite humbling......the music eerily plays on. Carl Sagan was one of histories great minds. He has brought science and a conscience to all of humanity. May he rest in peace.
Id give anything and everything just to have lunch and a shared bowl with that man. He passed when I was a ignorant punk 16 year old. Ive learned so much from this man I'll never meet...All I can do is pass his message on...into the great cosmos of human intellect;)
I believe that this should be seen and learnt by every child in every classroom in all countries, until they all know it by heart.
It should be learnt in their own language if needs be, but it should be learnt an understood by all children so they can take it with them into their adult life.
i wish carl sagan wil born again to change this world
Every - and I mean EVERY - school/university should at least once show this to their students.
No matter how many times I listen to this video, he stirs something inside me. My curiousity for the unknown.......
@lrosenb That's a wonderful thing to do. It puts everything into perspective. I think the whole series should be on a permanent loop on the web. That would be a great acknowledgement for what Dr Sagan did in my opinion.
A pale blue dot
I started on the road, once /
On a given autumn day /
Uncharted worlds crossed /
Of you never seen /
When will I be the furthest away /
And I will find out, some entity /
I will offer them, pictures and data /
From you what you gave me "of all" /
To find out, those who find me /
How I traveled through the Universe /
From the place where they made me /
Who are my creators, from Earth /
I am now something famous /
Travel through the black space /
I photographed, like a star /
A pale blue dot /
Carl Sagan, the best version humanity could ever attain.
All the space in this universe cannot contain how much we miss you!
This is the first video I've ever seen on RUclips with no "Dislikes" in it. That MUST mean something.
Thank you Carl.
P.S (to youtubers): please, continue like this.
The movie "Men, Women & Children" brought me here i don't regret watching this video
This. This is my favorite quote ever. It makes me feel so small and insignificant and yet its so beautiful that it nearly brings tears to my eyes. we are smaller than a particle of dust in the grand scheme of things, relatively speaking.
im gonna get this image as a poster for my room. and then when my mum storms in and tells me to clean it ill just point to the poster.
Why can't this be the most famous film in the ENTIRE world right now?
Who would made a copyright claim for such a important message ?!
Ive just watech the film Men Women and Children and its centered around this piece of work - its so powerful
Imagine, Humanity, taking it's time to think, come together, and saying...WHAT THE HELL ARE WE DOING TO EACH OTHER, see that out there, LET'S GO THERE!
Please remember, it's our ONLY home :(
And even more startling, for some: It's our ONLY life!
"Audio track removed due to copyright claim." - HOW INCREDIBLY IRONIC!!
Eleven people decided they did not like this? They are the problem! This clip is the way to the cure!
Possibly the most humbling video I have ever watched :(
There are some mean bastards in this world, and the holder of the music copyright proves that they exist. What a real "Achievement" it must have been to pull the music. They/He must feel huge to have so much POWER and spoil it for so many people. He will take his place in the universe as a ...........( you decide the words)
They stripped the audio over copyright demands, so that in glory and triumph, they could become the momentary masters.
I tear up everytime!
It truly is small, insignificant, and unimportant, our world is compared to the universe. But at the same time it is a beautiful world that we all share, that we all must cherish together with our short time on this small planet of ours. Sagan was a poet when it came to the subject of our role in the cosmos and his voice, his words, his writings and teachings still resonate strongly even today in the 21st century. We should all take his word and love one another instead of hate one another.
In my opinion. This is probably the single best and most powerful photo ever taken in the history of Humanity
Carl's words of the conflicts people had for a fraction of the dot we call Earth reminded me of Arthur C. Clarke's words:
"It is not easy to see how the more extreme forms of nationalism can long survive when men have seen the Earth in its true perspective as a single small globe against the stars."
Beautiful words, Carl's and Arthur's alike.
this is so inspirational... we must keep the fight for survival as a whole race and stop fighting each other...i hope that one day in the future we could reach distant planets and continue our expasion.
I love this clip, from a man i never got to know before it was to late. Carl, Happy birthday. i wish you were able to know your legacy is stil going on strong.
beautiful, simply beautiful. humbling, powerful, inspiring, grounding, touching and yet, not enough to make one and another respect, love or cherish each other. These wonderful words highlight all that is wrong with the human race.
And hints at what could be right with us.
"This video previously contained a copyrighted audio track. Due to a claim by a copyright holder, the audio track has been muted." Fucking serious?! FUCK THIS!
So Carl's argument is we are so small, let's not concern ourselves with things that don't matter, let's focus only on the things that matter: caring for the planet and caring for others. But if that is all we are, just for a moment a speck on that speck that we call Earth, then caring for the planet and caring for others is just as insignificant as the stupid things we start wars over.
If true, this photo is not beautiful, it's terrifying. Anyone who believes otherwise hasn't actually stopped and thought about the ramifications of what is actually being said.
+Jake Taylor We should try our best not to genocide ourselves before we can manage to get off that pale blue dot. It's the only home we've ever _known_, but it doesn't have to be the only home we ever _know_. We're still at a stage of cosmic insignificance, but we're still growing, and we could become significant if we could just survive long enough.
No. We have thought about it. We find it beautiful. We are not right, and you are not wrong. This speech is for everyone to reflect on and come to their own understanding of their place in the universe.
Well the point he makes is that we are important to ourselves but we are not important to the universe, the most objective and honest thing in reality. what he is expressing through that concept is that we need to grow and work to become as vast and as objective as the universe itself. and even though we are small and finite we should still to pursue the enlightenment of advancement.
+Jake Taylor
Only if you haven't thought beyond the ramifications of what is actually being said.
It's more like 97.000.000.000 light years across, which is an equally meaningless number for our capability to fathom... xD
When you ask someone to switch on a TV in your house, you say "turn on the TV would you?" . You don't say "turn on A TV", because it's you TV, and Earth is OUR home, the only home we have.
I have to watch this at least once every month to keep myself sane and survive in this jungle.
To the "dislikers": please do not troll this magnificent piece of art.
Would you draw a graffiti on the Sistine Chapel?
@lrosenb
I remember watching this in sixth grade science class. I had forgotten for so many years until I found this video, it all came flooding back. I think it's a wonderful idea.
This brought a tear of beauty to my eyes. Goodness, this is all we are..a pale blue dot. "Every king and peasant, every young couple in love. Every mother and father, every hopeful child, inventors and explorers. Every teacher of morals, every corrupt politician, every superstar, every supreme leader. Every saint and sinner in the history of our species........lived there." On that one pale blue dot.
If there was anyone I look up to it would be to this great man.
you are the best example of why nothing will ever work in our society, thanks!
That's here , that's home , that's us, that's our planet.
And this planet has to be loved ,this planet has to be rejoiced in cause it is a gift.
There is a little carl sagan in us all. Ive loved sagan ever since i was a kid he made me dream of the beauty of or universe, existance, everything. Pretty much all of the things you are giving up when you just say "God did" it and accept that.
“The earth is a very small stage in a vast cosmic arena. Think of the rivers of blood spilled by all those generals and emperors so that in glory and in triumph they could become the momentary masters of a fraction of a dot. Think of the endless cruelties visited by the inhabitants of one corner of the dot on scarcely distinguishable inhabitants of some other corner of the dot. How frequent their misunderstandings, how eager they are to kill one another, how fervent their hatreds. Our posturings, our imagined self-importance, the delusion that we have some privileged position in the universe, are challenged by this point of pale light. Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark. In our obscurity -- in all this vastness -- there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us from ourselves. It is up to us. It's been said that astronomy is a humbling, and I might add, a character-building experience. To my mind, there is perhaps no better demonstration of the folly of human conceits than this distant image of our tiny world. To me, it underscores our responsibility to deal more kindly and compassionately with one another and to preserve and cherish that pale blue dot, the only home we've ever known.”
This should be played at the beginning of each UN session and the Secretary General should get it emailed to each political and religious leader in the world so they can ponder on the effects of their decisions and actions.
Sagan wanted to speak to humanity.
To the people who can only point out fault and negativity on this humbling video. I ask you why, cause he doesn't agree with you?
The background music to this is by Vangelis and on the album "Heaven and Hell". Vangelis music goes brilliantly with the TV series Cosmos. Vangelis composed some gorgous piano music, and the soundtrack to oscar winning Blade Runner with Harrison Ford was by this genius too. Thanks for reading.
This speech is so humbling. It puts us in our place. Perhaps nothing encapsulates it better than the line “The delusion that we have some privileged position in the universe are challenged by this pale light”.
Hands down, one of the most meaningful speeches !
