It wasn't until the early 2010's that I actually was able to sit and listen to it and appreciate what Third Eye Blind had crafted. Sucks that they couldn't keep their shit in check as there could have been many great albums like their debut. Keep the Rock N' Roll history coming. Love these stories each day.
Lol the same happened to me with Creed and Soundgarden, I heard their songs so fucking endlessly it took me literally TWENTY YEARS before I could sit down and finally really appreciate them for what they are
Love them, got a chance to see them and hang out with them after a show in Manchester U.K 2019 - one of the best nights of my life - awesome band and really awesome people
It's kind of like a decade earlier 92 93 The Glam metal error was killed by the grunge. By 2004 yeah the rock music changed a lot of s*** changed I didn't like it the r&b change the hip Hop changed I really haven't found much I've liked since 2004
Their big mistake was ditching Kevin. His fluid lines, feathery rhythms, and rich atmospheres added depth, nuance, vituostic dynamism to their sound. Without him acting as a counterweight to Stephen's punchier, and more functional approach, their subsequent albums retained something of the architecture of the first two, but without Kevin providing the furnishing, decoration, and colour, what remained were works which sounded drab, and dim, with no soft place to land. Led Zeppelin might as well have fired Jimmy Page.
The song that got me to start playing guitar back when I was 14 was 3EB's Thanks A Lot off of the eponymous album. Several years ago Kevin, Arion, and Tony were touring together as XEB, playing all their old 3EB songs, and they stopped at the Hard Rock Cafe in Pittsburgh. I bought a VIP ticket because part of the deal was they let you play a song with them during sound check, and I got to play Thanks A Lot with the band using Kevin's guitar. I literally got to play the song that inspired me to play guitar, with the band members who wrote the song, using Kevin's guitar and equipment. Easily the top music moment of my life.
Some of their first shows were opining for my band the Fabulous Hedgehogs at Blake’s in Berkeley. They went on to huge world wide success, and we continued to play for 50 people and were not the slightest bit jealous.
..you just made me remember something. While I'm not a fan, I must have seen Our Lady Peace about 10 times. Actually, it was probably more like 8 or 9 times, but it seems like 100. I'm Canadian...and in the late 90's and early 2000's, they seemed to be the openers whenever a big name act would come to my local area. They were also on just about every single Canadian festival too..so that is how I saw them so much. Another band that I experienced the same thing with was, 'I Mother Earth'. I probably saw them close to 10 times in a 3 or 4 year period too. Again, I'm not really a fan, as I'm more of a metal guy. But both had some good songs. I guess I would consider it cool that I saw IME with both singers..before Edwin tried to launch his eventual unsuccessful solo career. thanks for jogging my memory, Hogan's Stache.
Every generation feels that way about the one after them. If you have a kid who grows up its even more apparent. I can remember when I was my daughters age like it were yesterday in the late 90's. Yet I will never truly be able to relate to her and her generation.
I was lucky enough to be a little kid in the 70’s, subconsciously soaking up all that classic rock, punk, disco, and soul! But I feel even luckier to have been a teenager in the 80’s, punk turning into early new wave, music and pop culture was so magical then, almost as cool as being in my late early 20’s for the alternative music revolution of the 90’s, which in my mind, totally rivals the late 60’s summer of love. But nothing was as cool as being in my mid thirties for Nu-Metal, know what I’m sayin’? Bawitdaba da bang da bang diggy diggy diggy! (Or my early 40’s for the dub-steps)
I can't imagine growing up in today's society either. I graduated high school in 1999 and grateful for being a kid in the 80's and teen in the 90's. Two of the greatest decades 😀
3EB is one of my favourite..heard most of their albums and i believe it takes a lot of talent to give albums with almost all good songs as far as melody, lyrics and vocal quality goes..love their music..!
I saw them this last summer and as a musician, I can vouch they were so tight knit and polished, it was an honor to be there with everyone. Stephen really engages the audience to engage with the band and with the audience themselves throughout the entire show. So lively. Catch them if you can. So worth it.
Third Eye Blind was one of my favorite bands in my late tweens and early teens. I can sing so many of their songs still to this day. Thank you for making this video, I always wondered what happened to them.
thanks for this video man, i’ve been a massive massive fan of third eye blind for a good few years now - it’s good to hear the story behind it all so clearly

I was like 7 years old when I first got hooked on “never let you go” on a kids bop thing my grandpa got me. 8 years later I finally discovered the rest of their catalogue and I now can say they are one of my favorite bands
Grew up in the 90s too. 3eb is still around bro, there are a bunch of recent shows here on RUclips. Of course the guitarist and other members have been replaced. Nice video BtW!

Great band but it sounds like the guy in charge became selfish with the money. Should’ve just split it up with everyone and I think they would’ve kept going strong without interruption.
That first album was so epic. It actually took me many years to even give it a chance because I always completely loathed the Semi-Charmed Life single. It's the only song on the record that is total bubble gum. The rest is just incredible though. As soon as that first track explodes I realized that I had misjudged the band.
.... ....... ......looooosing a whole year.. 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🥁🥁🥁 Losing a whole year I REMEMBER YOU AND ME USED TO SPEND THE WHOLE GODDAMNED DAY IN BED! ...That’s exactly what you’re referring to, isn’t it? 😁
Met Kevin Cadogan once many years ago, super nice dude! 3eb is like the sound of the late 90s. Losing a whole year, Narcolepsy, The Background, Semi Charmed Life, Jumper all just scream that time period. Thanks Kevin for writing the music! Interesting fact - Kevin uses a lot of odd alternate tunings like F# A C# F# G# E and DADEAE and variations of - but, that's why their sound was so different. He carried this into the second album Blue, on tracks like Darkness and Wounded ( the latter being the last song he ever wrote for 3eb, but also his favorite) Although not a major fan of Jenkins, his lyrics are brilliant.
I know a bunch of their songs and I never liked them. How do I know a bunch of their songs and don't like them you ask? Lol.. my brothers were huge huge fans of theirs when their first album came out and we all shared the same room together. Out of us three I couldn't stand them and we would have to fight 2 against 1 for me to try not to break our on CD/radio player... I had to suffer listening to that album but my younger brother did try to get me to like them as they did have dark themes to their songs but I just couldn't get into it... Then came their second album... Still didn't like them but the blue album was better than the first..... Fast forward 11 years later and me and my younger brother met Stephen Jenkins in front of his tour bus... I did most of the talking while my younger brother was saying the wrong cringe things unintentionally of course when he did speak and Stephen seemed like he was getting a little pissed at the things that were coming out of my brothers mouth.. I told him the blue album was better than the first and my brother says he liked the first one better and Stephen tells my brother "I like this guy (me) you should listen to him"... My brother started saying to himself under his breath as he looks right at me in shock like "what the fuck... He don't even like your band"... Hahahahaha True fucking story.. it happened in Tampa FL...... I still don't like their music not giving a damn who their guitar player is or not.
@@VicM-xc9zb That's great and all, but no, their 2nd album (although good) isn't as good as the 1st album. There are numerous songs from that 1st album that are still radio staples a couple of decades later.
@@drewledbetter8317 That is subjective by all means. I listened to both records and I think the blue album had better singles such as deep inside of you, the opening track which I don't remember the name of at the moment, never let you go and so on. I'm not saying your opinion is less popular because both my brothers were able to judge it better than me and both would agree with you but I liked all the singles they released better in my opinion. Like I've mentioned I talked to Stephen about this and even he agreed with me that he liked the second album better.
Always LOVED this band. Still listen to them all the time. They did have that one misstep-not even gonna mention it by name- but that aside, they've always made great music.
That first album is a masterpiece imo that defines my intro into adulthood. I’ve loved them ever since as the lyrics Jenkins produced and the sound of the band I felt were light years past other groups of the era
I remember picking up the first record in 98 or 99 after sampling it at a music store. I was pretty damn surprised how brilliant the entire album was, not just a couple of songs. From there I was pretty hooked..
If not for Jennifer Love Hewitt I wouldn't have seen Can't Hardly Wait which is the greatest teenage film ever imo, and I wouldn't have known all these great bands and songs that played on this movie and other movies with her. So thank you very much JLH! You're the greatest!
I wasn’t into this band much.. but I’m trying to learn about them & their music bc they will be playing this summer at our company Rock-n-Roll Sale~ Sammy Hagar played last year and I had a blast!
You should have focused a little more on the second act of their career starting with Dopamine. It saw their popularity skyrocket to heights they hadn’t seen in nearly 20 years. They had Dashboard opening for them, and Jimmy Eat World. Played 2 sold out shows at the Greek and did a sold out tour last year of Amphitheaters and theaters. They’re popularity is resonating with a new generation of fans, and they’re career deserves more than a “what happened to?” On the merits of their second act ALONE
No, I totally disagree. The original line up consisted of a sound that no other could come close to replicate. Kevin Cadogan's contribution to the band was the best thing that ever happened to them. In my eyes im gonna be generous here, after Ursa it wasn't third eye blind anymore. I can't really explain it but there's a feeling you get when you listen to the original 3eb and its like yeah that's it, you know? Im not trying to troll here but im a bitter life long 3eb fan. But its not the same, I could care less to listen to their new stuff.
you nailed it when you talked about the late '90s being..."weird". they totally were! i was in 7th grade in 1991 when nirvana and pearl jam were prominent, and my freshman year of college was 1997, and then we had third eye blind and i just didn't know what to do with it. it was...catchy, but insubstantial and weird. eventually i grew to appreciate it but it was definitely a weird time. years ago one of my exes, before i ever met her, got backstage and met steven and got into his trailor. charlize theron then came out of the shower and they sat down together and looked over her scrapbook of 3eb memorabilia like newspaper clippings.
Kevin Cadogan and Arion Salazar made 3eb. The band was never the same once they left. The surenos street gang's greenlighted Stephen Jenkins because of an incident that happen with a mexican American girl. That guy can never go to jail or walk in the streets of southern California.
Third Eye Blind reminds me of just growing up in the 90’s, transitioning from a small town in Arizona to the outskirts of Phoenix, going out with family on outings to the store and mall, also, what I would hear on the way to school. Good times, I miss the 90’s.
You do not need a voice to sing... just memorize the lyrics and you are a rock n roll superstar semi-charmed, which everyone loves to listen and sing... missed those days.
Their debut album was awesome. I grew up in the 90s and that album got me through some tough times. I’ll buy any album they put out. They remind me of the misfits in the since that they have a real poppy sound that will put you in a good mood but the lyrics are dark if you pay attention
I COMPLETELY AGREE with you on what you said about growing up in the 90's, OHHHH MY GOD YESSSSSSSSS, they don't make music or movies like use to... is weird nowadays...
I remember these guys! I also remember that Semi-Charmed Life was inescapable in the late 90s. It was in constant rotation on the radio!!! I'm proud to have grown up in the 90s too, man!!
Check out the song "Get me out of here" off their Dopamine album. It's a fun song, has sort of a Queen vibe to it. It's their best song off their two newest albums.
I kind of wondered what happened to these guys. I was in my 30s during the 1990s but appreciated the new music coming from 3EB, Matchbox 20 and Blink 182. They all seemed to fade away but apparently they are all still around just flying under the radar.
I don't think you can talk about the history of 3EB without any mention of Jenkins' relationship and split with g/f Charlize Theron. They dated from 1998-2001 and I think it's easy to hear the impact of the breakup in Out of the Vein.
First CD I bought when I began getting into music in junior high school. First album always triggers memories of that period in my life. In many ways a happier time.
Considering I wasn’t even alive when third eye blind’s first two albums were released, I have to say probably one of the only good things about growing up during these times is that I have more opportunities to discover amazing bands like this one! (Also funnily enough I love third eye blind and blue the most out of all their albums)

Lol the same happened to me with Creed and Soundgarden, I heard their songs so fucking endlessly it took me literally TWENTY YEARS before I could sit down and finally really appreciate them for what they are
that self titled is front to back unskippable gold
I saw these guys at Wayhome just a few years ago and they were great, the nostalgia of their catalogue made them one of the best of the weekend
Love them, got a chance to see them and hang out with them after a show in Manchester U.K 2019 - one of the best nights of my life - awesome band and really awesome people
It seems like the bands of the mid 90s were destroyed by 2003-4. Crazy
Ive noticed that too. Music scene in 04 was completely different than say 98.
@@austinfrazier7325 ya I went from loving nu metal and the new alternative stuff like the strokes to loving the thriving jam band scene around 04
Jenkins screwed the band. He is talented but he one fourth of the talent.
I couldn't agree more. As good a lyricist/songwriter Stephan is, he relied on the talents of Kevin and Arion to help really bring them to life.
Kevin is an unreal guitar player. 100% made that band
Kevin Cadogan had two great solo albums. Separation is one of my favorite songs that never released, as a member of TEB.
Art Vandelay Bully
Kevin Cadogan made that 1st TEB album beautiful. Such fantastic melodic guitar playing.
They have a ton of great songs!
Third eye blind still kicks ass to this day and are in awesome music festival lineups!
What you said between 0:21 and 0:31 made me subscribe.
Funny how Jenkins gets writers block after Cadogan was fired. His guitar tunings and playing gave them that unique 3eb sound.
His writers block got way worse when he fired Eric Gotland, who was rumored to be SJ’s ghostwriter.
Saw them in 98 with our lady peace and eve 6. Such a great show
That is the most 90s show I've ever heard of ever! Kudos
SMASH THE LIKE SHOW RESPECT TO THE OG
Got my d sucked to this band all the time back in the day
..you just made me remember something.
Michael R. Mid-to-late 90s and early 00s canadian music is golden
I graduated high school in 1999 how's it gonna be & graduate were the class songs...
I can’t imagine growing up in the 90’s, being a kid/teen of the 70’s/80’s 😁
Further from now the better! I wish I was born then and a young adult in the 90's instead of an elementary school kid.
Yeah it sucked, being a music fan. Especially American releases.
the 80s kinds sucked. not that there wasnt some great stuff. (talking heads and Metallica)
Great Video!!! I loved the first record!! Losing a whole year was such a great tune still is.
listen to motorcylce drive by and god of wine. both are legendary songs. also off of the Dopamine album: Say what you mean!
thanks for this video man, i’ve been a massive massive fan of third eye blind for a good few years now - it’s good to hear the story behind it all so clearly
SEMI-CHARMED LIFE WAS THE SOUNDTRACK OF MY SUMMER OF 97'.
Mine to another big song when I was at high school
took a bit for the censors to catch that crystal meth reference in semi-charmed kinda life...
The thing is the whole song revolves around crystal meth. The first line is "I'm packed and I'm holding." lol
Yeah the whole song is literally about drugs and sex. Stephan Jenkins himself said he could never believe it ended up on the radio.
@@WeekndWarriorrr yeah it also says “doing crystal meth will lift you up till you break” it still gets played on noon in the 90s where I’m at
@@princessneptune6887 Follow by, "I can't stop. I won't come down. i keep stock like a tick tock rhythm. A bump for the drop, and then I fucked up. I took the hit that I was given then I bumped again." lol I absolutely love the song and the fact it plays on the radio. Leave it to Third Eye Blind to make a good song about meth. lol
@@WeekndWarriorrr “and it’s all that I wanna do just a little now feel myself heavy as the ground I’m scared but I’m not coming down no no” yeah it’s kinda like a ode to rockstar life getting loaded n getting laid, ironically enough I can relate to the lyrics even the line “ the place where I fell asleep inside you” lmao not exactly but pretty damn close
I was like 7 years old when I first got hooked on “never let you go” on a kids bop thing my grandpa got me. 8 years later I finally discovered the rest of their catalogue and I now can say they are one of my favorite bands
Kids bop lmfao 😂 that's cute. I remember those commercials
Great band, Huge part of my childhood
One of my all time favorite bands. I've been a huge fan since their debut album. And they've continued putting out quality albums along the way.
299k subs blows my mind. The quality of your content reads 1.2 to 2 mil subs to me. Get it.
Grew up in the 90s too. 3eb is still around bro, there are a bunch of recent shows here on RUclips. Of course the guitarist and other members have been replaced. Nice video BtW!
I have been a fan over 20 years, I still attend their shows and buy their music. They still put on a fantastic show.
That whole first album was just amazing, can play it from beginning to end, just amazing
Out of the Vein was beautiful
I've seen them every single year for 6 or 7 years. They tour constantly. They're still in movie soundtracks. They are still incredible.
Their 1st 2 albums encapsulates what it felt like to live in the late nineties. Ursa major was an amazing album as well!
Encapsulates? I would've killed myself in the 90s if that was true.
@@thedude4672 It must be a terrible existence to be as negative as you. I'm sorry your life sucks. Hopefully you find something that makes you happy so you don't feel the need to post negative responses to strangers on an inconsequential RUclips video.
Great band but it sounds like the guy in charge became selfish with the money. Should’ve just split it up with everyone and I think they would’ve kept going strong without interruption.
💯 agree
90s alternative rock will always a soft spot in my heart because of the teen films. Just makes me feel so good .
Blue is one of my favorite albums...got me thru college...so freaking good & under appreciated
I totally agree. 🤗
Absolutely I can listen to Darwin non stop
That first album was so epic. It actually took me many years to even give it a chance because I always completely loathed the Semi-Charmed Life single. It's the only song on the record that is total bubble gum. The rest is just incredible though. As soon as that first track explodes I realized that I had misjudged the band.
Christian Lapsley bubble gum laced with meth and toxic relationships??? Lol it’s not bubble gum it’s happy sounding music with depressing lyrics
....
.......
......looooosing a whole year..
🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🥁🥁🥁
Losing a whole year
I REMEMBER YOU AND ME USED TO SPEND
THE WHOLE GODDAMNED DAY
IN BED!
...That’s exactly what you’re referring to, isn’t it? 😁
One of my 90s favorite bands.
I still love their self-titled album. Very strong release.
One of those bands that you either love them or you don’t know a single one of their songs.
Hahahahaha
True fucking story.. it happened in Tampa FL......
Good video!
thanks
I loved growing up in the 90's. I listened to so much different music. Seen 3eb twice. First and second albums fn great.
I just saw them last Friday at Legends casino in Washington state. They rocked!
This! 👆
@@benjlar1902 same here. The magic is gone since Kevin left
nah, they suck. They've been has-beens for several decades now.
you nailed it when you talked about the late '90s being..."weird". they totally were! i was in 7th grade in 1991 when nirvana and pearl jam were prominent, and my freshman year of college was 1997, and then we had third eye blind and i just didn't know what to do with it. it was...catchy, but insubstantial and weird. eventually i grew to appreciate it but it was definitely a weird time. years ago one of my exes, before i ever met her, got backstage and met steven and got into his trailor. charlize theron then came out of the shower and they sat down together and looked over her scrapbook of 3eb memorabilia like newspaper clippings.
Kevin Cadogan and Arion Salazar made 3eb. The band was never the same once they left. The surenos street gang's greenlighted Stephen Jenkins because of an incident that happen with a mexican American girl. That guy can never go to jail or walk in the streets of southern California.
Please elaborate?
Those were my college years. Great memories
I just realized this was 4 years old as you didn't mention "Screamer" "We are Drugs" "Band Apart" etc...
3Eb Self titled is so good and mixed so well. One of my all time favorite albums.
I love how "Deep Inside of You" peaked at #69 😂
Everything from their debut to Ursa Major is just excellent. Great and very underrated band.
I kind of wondered what happened to these guys. I was in my 30s during the 1990s but appreciated the new music coming from 3EB, Matchbox 20 and Blink 182. They all seemed to fade away but apparently they are all still around just flying under the radar.
They're still around, writing amazing albums and touring every year. I've seen them at least once a year for the last 10 years or more.
The 90s were an amazing time to be alive
their debut was the first album i ever bought with my own money back in 1997
My favorite band. Thanks.
Great band great album I remember borrowing from a girl at my job and didn't give it back to her my favorite song on that album is graduate
Losing a Whole Year is a great song
I don't think you can talk about the history of 3EB without any mention of Jenkins' relationship and split with g/f Charlize Theron. They dated from 1998-2001 and I think it's easy to hear the impact of the breakup in Out of the Vein.
First CD I bought when I began getting into music in junior high school. First album always triggers memories of that period in my life. In many ways a happier time.
I had their first album when it came out.
And I listened to it so often, it was the only CD I didn't let anybody borrow.
Considering I wasn’t even alive when third eye blind’s first two albums were released, I have to say probably one of the only good things about growing up during these times is that I have more opportunities to discover amazing bands like this one! (Also funnily enough I love third eye blind and blue the most out of all their albums)
