what's going on my fellow rock-and-rollers. Now success lawsuits infighting and feuds as well as backstabbing those are the words that I would use to describe Third Eye Blind career , so whatever happened to the bandwell you're gonna find out in today's video. Now I love the fact that I grew upin the 90s I can't imagine being a kid
growing up in today's world political
correctness has infected everything and
they just don't make music or movies
like they used to and the late 90s were
a weird time in rock music. Grunge and
alternative rock was on his way out it and it
was replaced by this weird mishmash of
post grunge groups like Bush, Better than
Ezra, Days of the New and more poppy
commercial rock like Goo Goo Dolls Third
Eye Blind and Sugar Ray and then you had
new metal. Now when I think of the more
memorable parts of my childhood I think
of some of the great teenage comedies
including can't hardly wait and American
Pie and the common bond between these
two movies was the rock band Third Eye
Blind who had music featured in both
films. Now Third Eye Blind was huge in
the late nineties and had some big
singles, but whatever happened to those
guys. Nw to say that Third Eye Blind had
overnight success would not be true.
Bandleader and singer Stephan Jenkins
fine-tuned his craft in the Bay Area
during the early to mid 90s before the
band found huge success in 1997 with their
self-titled debut album and the band
would be formed four years prior by the
songwriting duo of Stephan Jenkins and
Kevin Cadogan in San Francisco and
Jenkins influences were pretty eclectic
including parliament-funkadelic
to Joy Division to Cat Stevens and
during his time in college Jenkins would
be diagnosed with chronic fatigue
syndrome, which took away a lot of his
youthful energy for several years but
once he recovered from that condition
Jenkins turned his attention back to
music. But with no label he along with
Cadogan would record a demo of songs
with other local musicians but the
problem was that the demo didn't really
fit in with what was popular on rock
radio at the time, but it would be luck
that truly helped the band out a close
friend of the band became their manager
and they met engineers David Gleason and
Erick Dodd who agreed to work with the
group on their songs.
And at one point Gleeson even helped the
band sneak into George Lucas's Skywalker
Ranch way they recorded some songs It
would be Third Eye Blind demos of how's
it going to be and slow motion that
caught the attention of recording labels
including Dave Massey of Epic Records
who would meet with the band and by the
end of that meeting
Stephen Jenkins had secured an opening
slot for Oasis who were playing San
Francisco that same week Jenkins would
reflect on that meeting saying I think he
liked my directness he wasn't threatened
by it the same way some people were. Now
the opening slot for Oasis was a dream
come true
Third Eye Blind had become used to
playing for dozens of people, but they
were now plaintiff thousands of people
opening for one of the world's biggest
rock bands. And following the opening
slot for Oasis, a bidding war ensued from
record labels and the band would end up
signing with Elektra Records and it
would prove to be one of the biggest
deals for any unsigned bands at that
point in time now. From the moment Third
Eye Blind hit they were inescapable. the
band's debut album would produce three
huge singles with Semi-Charmed Life
Jumper and How's it Going To Be in
addition to two other well-known songs
from the band's catalogue including
Graduate and Losing a whole year Now
those songs would be played to death on
radio and television even to this day
and the band at the end of the day would
sell six million copies of their debut
album just in the US alone and they also
got a highly coveted guest spot on
Saturday Night Live. Now what separated
Third Eye Blind from their peers was
that they were singing about some pretty
dark stuff. It would probably help that
from end Stephan Jenkins was obsessed
with Lou Reed and The Velvet Underground
and their debut album was filled with
lyrics about drug addiction, abuse and
suicide as exemplified in the song Semi
Charmed Life and Jumper but these tracks
were packaged with catchy hooks and
up-tempo feel and poppy choruses and the
lyrical matter did little to dissuade
radio stations from not playing their
tunes now 1999
what other topics would you like to see me cover?
You should do blur oasis fight, OR, dandy warhols vs brian jonestown massacre fight, see the documentary Dig!
There’s not a lot of info out about Suicidal Tendencies and how they had their own street gang. All the info I know about them are from NOFX’s book. That could be an interesting topic to explore.
Do a video on my favorite band Extreme. 🤷♂️
Cover some King Diamond.
Sidd, what about Beatallica (the band that mashes Beatles and Metallica) and the lawsuit that the record company of the Beatles put against them and how Lars Ulrich helped them
Almost a quarter century later, it's amazing how awesome their debut album holds up. Just an amazing album with no weak track.
Absolutely agree. It's definitely in my top 10 favorite albums of all time. Still listen to it, Blue, and a slew of their other new songs. Amazing band.
ZERO weak tracks. Truly amazing
ANTHONATOR Gaming Fuck yeah!! Man that album may as well be the album of my teenage years. I can still sing those songs from memory even though I haven’t listened to them since my computer died 3 years ago
Agreed. The album easily takes you back to wherever you were when you found it. Still holds up today. True art
Fucking love that album
I'm nearly 63 & remember when Semi Charmed Life was on high rotation on the radio at work. The song was chock full of greatness but when Stephan Jenkin's sings that last word in the line, "I'm not listening when you say goodbye" & he goes into that gravelly falsetto ... man I never tire of hearing that along with the rest of this brilliant debut album. Not one dud track out of 14! Kevin's guitar playing is other worldly and I gotta stop as there aren't enough superlatives to describe how this album affects me still.
Awesome man :)
And the four right chords could make me cry…
Classic Album for sure!!
100% That album is still alive. There are things that get old with time. But you can drop this cd in and it’s just amazing. The whole album. It’s not a relic. It’s still alive and well.
Motorcycle Drive By is one of my favorite songs of all time.
Absolutely
Yep
Third Eye Blind is a low-key excellent rock group with mountains of good songs. I can't believe Bonfire off Ursa Major wasn't a huge hit
Honestly everything from their self-titled - Ursa Major is fantastic. Out of the Vein in particular.
Bonfire is a great song
Agreed, Bonfire is my ringtone
Haut Strange Out is the Vein is incredible
Chris Gorski Absolutely. Bonfire is a great song. I see 3EB every time they come around. Still excellent
I think this band would have reached much greater heights if Kevin had remained in the band.
Third eye blind has a strong following! You’ll literally feel it at their shows! They have so many songs that aren’t released as hits that are absolutely loved! No one writes songs like third eye blind! The song wounded, if you haven’t heard it will blow you away! When I first heard it back in 2002 I think after their first album was so freakin awesome!!!
Yes and Red Summer Sun.. That whole album is amazing and 3EB is a criminally underrated band. I feel like there's more to what happened between them than what was said in this video.
Yes, and for those that don't know: Wounded was written by Kevin Cadogan
Even the lyrics?@@flaminghead1va
1000 Julys!
Thanks for uploading. I think this could have gone into more detail on Cadogan leaving the band and the deterioration of his relationship with Jenkins. There's an interesting story there.
Still touring regularly and releasing cool new music! I didn’t even get into them until 2008. Love em. They still play amphitheaters
Quintin LaFoe and county fairs, and bowling alleys 😀
My god screamer is hot fucking garbage but dopamine was actually really good and ofc their original stuff is amazing
Completely sold out PNC in NJ last summer
Saw them a few months back in a packed concert in the UK. Screamers great
Saw them tonight with a crowd of 5000
If you are looking to find a few songs to listen to 3eb, id suggest: Crystal Baller, cant get away, bonfire, and losing a whole year.
Such a great band!
Or just listen to a greatest hits playlist... How I found all three songs listed, as well as a bunch of other underrated gem
Slow motion. Greatest 3EB song of all time imo
@@foreverendeavor7383 Facts. That song is a masterpiece.
I'd always blast 10 Days Late and My Hit and Run in the car.
I was always addicted to Crystal Baller, Blinded and Can't Get Away off their 3rd album Out of the Vein. Played those over and over. Same with the first 4 tracks off the album Dopamine. Great stuff!
Best memory was hearing Sem-Charmed Life the first time on FM radio on my walkman while riding a bicycle late at night... ☺
Their song “Slow Motion” was deemed too disturbing after Columbine happened, and it was stripped of the lyrics almost completely on “Blue”. Eventually they released the full version and it’s a great song. I never understood why rap can be filled with lyrics about murder, but a rock band can’t include a line about a kid shooting another kid.
Good post homie
Now there's the million dollar question
just worry about the genre you listen to maybe? i understand the dogwhistle but also, its good advice.
Because it's not politically correct to go after rap. That's why they can talk about whatever they want.
jon nuanez I completely agree with you.
Great band but it sounds like the guy in charge became selfish with the money. Should’ve just split it up with everyone and I think they would’ve kept going strong without interruption.
💯 agree
3EB are one of my favorite bands, in my Top 5. They’ve stayed pretty consistent with a few lulls here and there. Dopamine is a great album, the newest Screamer is good too. If you stopped listening after the first album, do yourself a favor and check out the rest of their catalog.
Darren Parker I was going to write...Dopamine was great but then saw your note
Out of the Vein is a true blue masterpiece. I love everything from 3eb - Ursa Major. It’s hit and miss after that, IMO, but they still make great music.
Interesting your guy's views on these albums, I thought dopamine was close to blue. Out of the vein was definitely better than Ursa Major and I honestly think screamer was their worst album. No rock n roll and a bunch of processed junk lol lastly, self title by far the best.
I think they fell off a cliff after out of the vein. Ursa major is junk. Screamer isn't 3EB... It should be call Stephen and his bunch of randos
paherbst524 Dopamine is really good. Ursa Major, We Are Drugs and Screamer are OK.
SERIOUSLY. they’re still around making music and touring and being amazing
@jon gibson Third Eye Bland
Yea this video is stupid. Screamer, walks like kings, ways, the whole albums really underrated. Seen em last summer in philly. They really do still put a great fuking show on! ;)
@@cklivingston I was at that show as well! Was supposed to go see them again in March but coronavirus cancelled that.
Their big mistake was ditching Kevin. His fluid lines, feathery rhythms, and rich atmospheres added depth, nuance, vituostic dynamism to their sound. Without him acting as a counterweight to Stephen's punchier, and more functional approach, their subsequent albums retained something of the architecture of the first two, but without Kevin providing the furnishing, decoration, and colour, what remained were works which sounded drab, and dim, with no soft place to land. Led Zeppelin might as well have fired Jimmy Page.
Jenkins screwed the band. He is talented but he one fourth of the talent.
I couldn't agree more. As good a lyricist/songwriter Stephan is, he relied on the talents of Kevin and Arion to help really bring them to life.
Kevin is an unreal guitar player. 100% made that band
This is crazy. I forgotten about this band until a few days ago Jumper came up while my music was on shuffle. I stopped everything & listened to the rest of the album. I was singing along most of the time. One of the best albums from the 90’s for sure.
songs like "Thanks A Lot, Burning Man, I Want You and The Background" are my favorites
Paulie Duguay After we did it by the windowsill
Smoke rings drift into the midnight sky
Presently in the quilt that your mother made
A bare candle burns to fight off the gloom
you say: “To live this way is not for the weak”
And like a jazz DJ you talk me into sleep
I said there’ll be no regrets when the words come
And they shall surely come
I fired that all off from memory not having heard the song in at least 4 years but a recollection triggered by your song titles. I’m curious how well I did!!
Do yourself a favor and listen to some of the newer stuff too!
They released 6 more albums since then. They released a new album in Sept 2021, Out Bande Apart. Give that a try. All their music is great. They are not a 90s band, only those who are nostalgic call them a 90s band because all they can remember are the 90's.
took a bit for the censors to catch that crystal meth reference in semi-charmed kinda life...
The thing is the whole song revolves around crystal meth. The first line is "I'm packed and I'm holding." lol
Yeah the whole song is literally about drugs and sex. Stephan Jenkins himself said he could never believe it ended up on the radio.
@@WeekndWarriorrr yeah it also says “doing crystal meth will lift you up till you break” it still gets played on noon in the 90s where I’m at
@@princessneptune6887 Follow by, "I can't stop. I won't come down. i keep stock like a tick tock rhythm. A bump for the drop, and then I fucked up. I took the hit that I was given then I bumped again." lol I absolutely love the song and the fact it plays on the radio. Leave it to Third Eye Blind to make a good song about meth. lol
@@WeekndWarriorrr “and it’s all that I wanna do just a little now feel myself heavy as the ground I’m scared but I’m not coming down no no” yeah it’s kinda like a ode to rockstar life getting loaded n getting laid, ironically enough I can relate to the lyrics even the line “ the place where I fell asleep inside you” lmao not exactly but pretty damn close
The self titled remains one of my favorite alt rock albums
Alt rock? 😂😂😂
@@The_Mimewarit’s the alt to alt, or, alternatively, alt to not alt, which alternatively makes it alt or alt, to and of alt, but it’s not alt.
It seems like the bands of the mid 90s were destroyed by 2003-4. Crazy
Ive noticed that too. Music scene in 04 was completely different than say 98.
@@austinfrazier7325 ya I went from loving nu metal and the new alternative stuff like the strokes to loving the thriving jam band scene around 04
It's kind of like a decade earlier 92 93 The Glam metal error was killed by the grunge. By 2004 yeah the rock music changed a lot of s*** changed I didn't like it the r&b change the hip Hop changed I really haven't found much I've liked since 2004
How's it Gonna Be is my favorite song right now. As a teen I thought it had a catchy tune but as an adult with life experience I can relate to the lyrics so much. It's so emotional and I never realized how much emotion was in it until now
They ended the show tonite with How’s it gonna be! Was awesome!
They have a ton of great songs!
Saw them in 98 with our lady peace and eve 6. Such a great show
That is the most 90s show I've ever heard of ever! Kudos
SMASH THE LIKE SHOW RESPECT TO THE OG
Got my d sucked to this band all the time back in the day
..you just made me remember something. While I'm not a fan, I must have seen Our Lady Peace about 10 times. Actually, it was probably more like 8 or 9 times, but it seems like 100. I'm Canadian...and in the late 90's and early 2000's, they seemed to be the openers whenever a big name act would come to my local area. They were also on just about every single Canadian festival too..so that is how I saw them so much. Another band that I experienced the same thing with was, 'I Mother Earth'. I probably saw them close to 10 times in a 3 or 4 year period too. Again, I'm not really a fan, as I'm more of a metal guy. But both had some good songs. I guess I would consider it cool that I saw IME with both singers..before Edwin tried to launch his eventual unsuccessful solo career. thanks for jogging my memory, Hogan's Stache.
Michael R. Mid-to-late 90s and early 00s canadian music is golden
I will tell you, it has been difficult to be a big fan of Third Eye Blind. Out of the Vein, man I am a proselyte of that album.
Also, your editing is getting a lot better. Big props for 'honing your craft.'
Out of the Vein is one of my favorite albums ever.
I've been there from the beginning and I still say OOTV (Out of the Vein) is their best body of work, all around.
Agree. It's difficult to be a fan of someone who's an a**hole to his band mates and likes to alienate half his fan base. I like their first 2 albums...but I wouldn't go to one of their shows unless Cadogan was back
once Kevin Cadogan left it was never the same. they had good songs after that but the Kevin x
Stephan Jenkins songwriting team is just too good to top without the other
“I remember the stupid things
The mood rings, the bracelets and the beads
Nickels and dimes, yours and mine
Did you cash in all your dreams?
You don't dream for me no, you don't dream for me no
But I still feel you pulsing like sonar from the days in the waves
That girl is like a sunburn I would like to save
That girl is like a sunburn I would like to save
She's like a sunburn, she's like a sunburn.”
So great!!
Do you know what girl was like a sunburn?
@@NJGuy1973 her name is Charlize
Third Eye Blind is one of the best examples of how influential the producer is.
The world is FILLED with viable songwriters.
Solid ones like Jenkins, need a producer to break big.
Eric Valentine is the goat
Anders Eriksson “it’s not what you know, it’s who you know”
Kevin Cadogan had two great solo albums. Separation is one of my favorite songs that never released, as a member of TEB.
Art Vandelay Bully
that self titled is front to back unskippable gold
One of my favorite bands of all time!! Their self titled album still holds up as a masterpiece
Funny how Jenkins gets writers block after Cadogan was fired. His guitar tunings and playing gave them that unique 3eb sound.
His writers block got way worse when he fired Eric Gotland, who was rumored to be SJ’s ghostwriter.
I can’t imagine growing up in the 90’s, being a kid/teen of the 70’s/80’s 😁
Further from now the better! I wish I was born then and a young adult in the 90's instead of an elementary school kid.
Every generation feels that way about the one after them. If you have a kid who grows up its even more apparent. I can remember when I was my daughters age like it were yesterday in the late 90's. Yet I will never truly be able to relate to her and her generation.
I was lucky enough to be a little kid in the 70’s, subconsciously soaking up all that classic rock, punk, disco, and soul! But I feel even luckier to have been a teenager in the 80’s, punk turning into early new wave, music and pop culture was so magical then, almost as cool as being in my late early 20’s for the alternative music revolution of the 90’s, which in my mind, totally rivals the late 60’s summer of love. But nothing was as cool as being in my mid thirties for Nu-Metal, know what I’m sayin’? Bawitdaba da bang da bang diggy diggy diggy! (Or my early 40’s for the dub-steps)
Yeah it sucked, being a music fan. Especially American releases.
the 80s kinds sucked. not that there wasnt some great stuff. (talking heads and Metallica)
My favorite band for a long time. I enjoy so much if their older stuff, but today it's pretty hit and miss. Once they got woke, and political I didn't really care for it.
I firmly believe that 3EB wouldn’t have blown up the way they did if Eric Valentine didn’t produce the first record. The high energy moments explode out of the speakers, and more subdued moments still capture the listener’s attention. On top of that, the dreamy, sexy, underwater-feeling production on I Want You fits the song perfectly.
Their first record is one of the best produced albums I've ever heard.
STABBING WESTWARD
Agreed let's get some Stabbing Westward stories!
I agree! 👏
Kevin Creamore HOW AM I SUPPOSED TO HAVE SEX WITHOUT YOU?!?!
Least cool lyrics ever used in the chorus of a badass song
I howled when I saw a CD titled “The Very Best of Stabbing Westward”. 😂
Seen and met them about 6 months ago in a small venue. They are working on a new album.
'Whatever Happened To':
SPACE (female of the species)
EMF
JESUS JONES
SKATENIGS
I love Jesus Jones..I listen to Liquidizer and Perverse pretty regular lately
Kevin Cadogan and Arion Salazar made 3eb. The band was never the same once they left. The surenos street gang's greenlighted Stephen Jenkins because of an incident that happen with a mexican American girl. That guy can never go to jail or walk in the streets of southern California.
Please elaborate?
Political correctness DESTROYS EVERYTHING.
I graduated high school in 1999 how's it gonna be & graduate were the class songs...
You didn't explain anything.
That first album was so epic. It actually took me many years to even give it a chance because I always completely loathed the Semi-Charmed Life single. It's the only song on the record that is total bubble gum. The rest is just incredible though. As soon as that first track explodes I realized that I had misjudged the band.
Christian Lapsley bubble gum laced with meth and toxic relationships??? Lol it’s not bubble gum it’s happy sounding music with depressing lyrics

Losing a whole year
I REMEMBER YOU AND ME USED TO SPEND

...That’s exactly what you’re referring to, isn’t it? 😁
You should have focused a little more on the second act of their career starting with Dopamine. It saw their popularity skyrocket to heights they hadn’t seen in nearly 20 years. They had Dashboard opening for them, and Jimmy Eat World. Played 2 sold out shows at the Greek and did a sold out tour last year of Amphitheaters and theaters. They’re popularity is resonating with a new generation of fans, and they’re career deserves more than a “what happened to?” On the merits of their second act ALONE
This! 👆
No, I totally disagree. The original line up consisted of a sound that no other could come close to replicate. Kevin Cadogan's contribution to the band was the best thing that ever happened to them. In my eyes im gonna be generous here, after Ursa it wasn't third eye blind anymore. I can't really explain it but there's a feeling you get when you listen to the original 3eb and its like yeah that's it, you know? Im not trying to troll here but im a bitter life long 3eb fan. But its not the same, I could care less to listen to their new stuff.
@@benjlar1902 same here. The magic is gone since Kevin left
nah, they suck. They've been has-beens for several decades now.
Boomer complaining about the good old times
I saw these guys at Wayhome just a few years ago and they were great, the nostalgia of their catalogue made them one of the best of the weekend
Bro I’m still live in 1997 lol
One of those bands that you either love them or you don’t know a single one of their songs.
I know a bunch of their songs and I never liked them. How do I know a bunch of their songs and don't like them you ask?
Lol.. my brothers were huge huge fans of theirs when their first album came out and we all shared the same room together. Out of us three I couldn't stand them and we would have to fight 2 against 1 for me to try not to break our on CD/radio player... I had to suffer listening to that album but my younger brother did try to get me to like them as they did have dark themes to their songs but I just couldn't get into it... Then came their second album... Still didn't like them but the blue album was better than the first.....
Fast forward 11 years later and me and my younger brother met Stephen Jenkins in front of his tour bus... I did most of the talking while my younger brother was saying the wrong cringe things unintentionally of course when he did speak and Stephen seemed like he was getting a little pissed at the things that were coming out of my brothers mouth.. I told him the blue album was better than the first and my brother says he liked the first one better and Stephen tells my brother "I like this guy (me) you should listen to him"... My brother started saying to himself under his breath as he looks right at me in shock like "what the fuck... He don't even like your band"... Hahahahaha
True fucking story.. it happened in Tampa FL...... I still don't like their music not giving a damn who their guitar player is or not.
@@VicM-xc9zb That's great and all, but no, their 2nd album (although good) isn't as good as the 1st album. There are numerous songs from that 1st album that are still radio staples a couple of decades later.
@@drewledbetter8317 That is subjective by all means. I listened to both records and I think the blue album had better singles such as deep inside of you, the opening track which I don't remember the name of at the moment, never let you go and so on. I'm not saying your opinion is less popular because both my brothers were able to judge it better than me and both would agree with you but I liked all the singles they released better in my opinion. Like I've mentioned I talked to Stephen about this and even he agreed with me that he liked the second album better.
My thoughts are: Do do doo, do do do do, do do dooo, do do do do...
Third eye blind still kicks ass to this day and are in awesome music festival lineups!
I loved how the singer was always so cocky about other bands in interviews. Saw they were playing a rib fest awhile back. Fucking hilarious. The late 90s was horrendous musically
Karma
When their debut album came out I couldn't stand it. Everywhere you went is was playing, radio, supermarkets, movies, commercials, you could escape it. It wasn't until the early 2010's that I actually was able to sit and listen to it and appreciate what Third Eye Blind had crafted. Sucks that they couldn't keep their shit in check as there could have been many great albums like their debut. Keep the Rock N' Roll history coming. Love these stories each day.
Lol the same happened to me with Creed and Soundgarden, I heard their songs so fucking endlessly it took me literally TWENTY YEARS before I could sit down and finally really appreciate them for what they are
You should do FASTBALL. They are still around, having put out a new LP in 2019
I play a gig at a small restaurant most Fridays and "Out of My Head" is part of our set list.
I don't think you can talk about the history of 3EB without any mention of Jenkins' relationship and split with g/f Charlize Theron. They dated from 1998-2001 and I think it's easy to hear the impact of the breakup in Out of the Vein.
2019 album is called “Screamer” not “Scream”.
Eh, who cares. It sucks. Haha
SEMI-CHARMED LIFE WAS THE SOUNDTRACK OF MY SUMMER OF 97'.
Mine to another big song when I was at high school
I’ve had “how’s is going to be” playing in my head for the last three days
Love them, got a chance to see them and hang out with them after a show in Manchester U.K 2019 - one of the best nights of my life - awesome band and really awesome people
I suggest you try and spread out the story, temporally. You spent a lot of time in the beginning, but what the band has done lately in many ways is taking them back to where they should have gone prior to Kevin's firing. Also, I dont think any band from the late 90s tours even 1/10 of what third eye blind does. The whole time they have toured almost every year. Pretty amazing in that regard.
Kevin Cadogan made that 1st TEB album beautiful. Such fantastic melodic guitar playing.
Their first album was the best by far, it stinks they keep it up like back then, I feel really sorry for their frontman, he had a rough life
Stephan is honestly an incredible lyricist and a great vocalist, but he is solely to blame for destroying the core essence of what made this band special when he screwed over Kevin (and later Arion).
Kevin was the catalyst for the magical songwriting present on their debut and on Blue, the dynamic duo of him and Stephan was one-in-a-million.
But greed ruins everything. Fuck you, Stephan.
I remember they were booked a few years ago for some Republican convention or something like that. They went out and trolled everyone there hard because they were not Republican at all. I watched part of it on video and laughed my ass off.
So they were libtards?
And where are they now? Lol
@@gsxerwhite where are any of them now? rock is about dead
gsxerwhite actually, they released a new album last year, went on a sold out theater tour with Jimmy Eat World and Neon Trees, headlining, and have become bigger then they have been in 20 years.
I always thought Jenkins was always in favor of communism because in the song "Narcolepsy" he sings "I read dead Russian authors volumes at a time, I write everything down except what's on my mind" .... So anything from Russia was either Communism/ Socialism and NEVER Capitalism/ Free Enterprise ...Jenkins even promoted Barack Obama in 2008, there's a video of Jenkins talking to a liberal college class of Obama supporters and Jenkins is proudly telling the kids of their opportunity of making a political choice
They were scheduled to co-headline a festival up here in July. The other co-headliner - Wu Tang Clan.
Damn coronavirus!
That sound like a pretty shitty festival. You would have to pay me to see that arrangement.
Love the band but it seems like Jenkins might've been a problem. I remember interviews with him where he said he didn't want the band to be big, but more of an indie band, so skip trying to make singles. He also seemed to be very inflexible with other members when it came to artistic decisions. I think these were on the videos that came with the 2nd or 3rd album.
Later on you find out that virtually every other member of the original crew left & sued him, then decided to make their own band without him, and you can't help but feel he was the problem. Damn shame, I loved the first two albums like crazy. Jenkins was also an amazing lyricist.
Stephen Jenkins also had a role in the movie "Rock Star" featuring Marky Mark Wahlberg...
He also dated/banged Charleze Theron before Hollywood took it's turn on her.
“I’m not chilling him Izzy” 😉
As well as the lead singer of Steel Panther
Bought the album for semi charmed life but stayed for God of wine
That song is brilliant!
Well considering I am still in love with Stephen Jenkins and have been since the 90s I’d say he’s still sizzling, hot musically and physically. Sadly, he will unlikely never marry me, but I certainly can dream.
PS. I love you Stephen Jenkins rock on baby.❤
Its easy to criticize political correctness, when you've grown up white and straight in America. I understand. Im white and straight. But Im not blind to what other folks have had to deal with as the butt of other's " jokes". Im not criticizing you. You're young and inexperienced. Just try and understand the feelings of others. I love your channel!!
"Politically correct" is a term that was coined in the 60s.
Also, Cadogan was forced out of the band because Jenkins signed some sort of deal that would give him most of the percentage of royalties I believe. It's not like he just walked off. He didn't have much choice. No surprise, the band never put out another good album after Blue. He and Jenkins were a great duo and could have done well together, but Jenkins was a bit too.... full of it.
True we’re more politically correct in our music and art now, but I honestly don’t see that as any substantial reason as to why music isn’t as good as it used to be. Music was ALWAYS super progressive, that was literally the heart of blues music- speaking truth about what was going on, and we’ve always postured in music to a degree. What’s hurt modern music, to me, is the amount of short cuts taken in pop music today. Technology could and is being used to make INCREDIBLE shit, but it’s much more frequently being used to pump out literal trash. Auto tune, to me, is a bigger factor in lessening the sound of music that used to make it hit us so hard.
Great band great album I remember borrowing from a girl at my job and didn't give it back to her my favorite song on that album is graduate
Video presenter: "Political correctness has infected everything,"
Me: *Don't recommend channel*
I just saw them last Friday at Legends casino in Washington state. They rocked!
listen to motorcylce drive by and god of wine. both are legendary songs. also off of the Dopamine album: Say what you mean!
Uh, I just saw them a couple of weeks ago. They still fkn rock. So that’s what happened to them 😂
Sounds like Stephen didn't have writers block as much as not having a co writer
Matchbox 20
And third eye blind are the same crappy band
I met Jenkins at a concert in Kansas with the Goo Goo Dolls and Vanessa Carlton! I have met a lot of musicians and I am sorry to say I didn't enjoy meeting Stephan Jenkins or John Bon Jovi but that's a vet for another day! I found him to be rude and cold and distant! I was a huge fan of his work and he told me "this is the last place i want to be" wow dude if that's how you feel don't do a tour! At the time I think him and Vanessa Carlton were seeing each other so maybe relationship issues. a few years later I Gave him another shot thinking everyone's had bad days right! so I am working at a radio station and he comes in for a acoustic set and I smile tell him that i love his songs. He was ok I guess quiet more serous then it needed to be. I didn't ask for a photo or a picture cause I was at work. Sometimes we get artist that will do a staff photo but he said no! But who know maybe someday a third time is a charm !
I've heard this too. I've not met him personally, but one of my friends did a long time ago...1999/2000? Sometime around then. She said he was rude and had an air of superciliousness about him. Since then, I have have come to a conclusion that he is a egotistical douche - and your experience adds to it. And the treatment of Kevin Cadogan demonstrates it further. It seems to be all about him and takes all the money like a ''it's my band, I get paid the most'' attitude. He seems a very ''me, me, me'' person..... I do love their music though.
Terrible has beens that were never really much to begin with. Corny. Pretentious. Silly.
Someone in this band seems like a real narcissist. That may have proved to be problematic.
after cadogan left the band went downhill - they were still good but the original lineup was the best
Love how he mentions “pc culture” has somehow infected rock in the last few years, Lennon casually said in an interview in the 60s the band was more popular than Jesus and the whole country lost their fucking minds over it. Twisted sister, in the eighties, has to go in front of fucking Congress for lyrics that would be considered mild by today’s standards
Yeah, that had me scratching my head. "Back in the day" , lyrics had to be a lot more subtle. Now, they just straight up call a song WAP. Wax nostalgic all you like, but the 90s were a lot more censored than anything today.
If I'm not mistaken "Semi charmed kinda life " was briefly featured in the 1998 film Wild things along with that "Why can't we be friends? " song that i can't remember who the artist was but it was also everywhere in the late 90s. Now Wild things was obviously NOT aimed at preteens/teens but let's be real we all watched it anyway, it had Neve Campbell and Denise Richards in it and they were playing 18 year old H.S students so back then I kinda of lumped it into the same category as most other teen movies of that era and semi charmed life was that one annoying, inescapable song that was too "pop" and commercial for my tastes. Not that I was some music snob (Aqua was my guilty pleasure back then) but semi charmed life seemed like it was made for teenybop movie trailers, commercials and other things aimed at preteens. Even though I was the right age for it it just annoyed me. Nobody i knew seemed to like it either and in my opinion while it helped the band tremendously it also hurt them because I had a completely different impression of them based off that one song. I didn't give them a chance until the mid 00s my friend was listening to an interesting album i wasn't familiar with and I was surprised to find out it was third eye blind. They weren't all that bad afterall. Now whenever I hear semi charmed life it takes me right back to the era of MTVs TRL, teen comedies, boy bands, pokemon, Korn, Limp Biscuit and even Columbine. It's just one of those types of songs that reeks of the late 90s.
I love how "Deep Inside of You" peaked at #69 😂
I got thrown in jail after a third eye blind show
I got charged with securities fraud after a third eye blind sound check
All I know is that lead singer was so damn hot in the 90’s. 🥵
His name is Stephen Jenkins
@shawn conrad Actually a couple of the songs were pretty damn good in my opinion. “How’s it going to be” and “semi charmed life”... I mean no they weren’t the Beatles but when you’re talking about early 2000s late 90s bands you can do a hell of a lot worse.
Check out the song "Get me out of here" off their Dopamine album. It's a fun song, has sort of a Queen vibe to it. It's their best song off their two newest albums.
Lol. Saw them headline a huge arena show with jimmy eat world like 4 months ago. They are doing just fine.
Never had heard of them, mind you around 1997 I hated a lot of the then current trends of rock music (nu metal being a example)
Little remembered fact: Stephan Jenkins was engaged to Charlize Theron back during his heyday!!
Some of their first shows were opining for my band the Fabulous Hedgehogs at Blake’s in Berkeley. They went on to huge world wide success, and we continued to play for 50 people and were not the slightest bit jealous.
I remember the first time I saw Paul Rudd, I thought he was Stephan Jenkins.
I still love their self-titled album. Very strong release.
Into the Vein, for me, is one of their best albums, under rated or under appreciated, whatever you wanna call it.
Last albums fire. Alls ive listened to for 2 months. Ways, walk like kings, screamer, tropic scorpio......fuk the whole album is a mood.
Losing a Whole Year is a great song
EVERY SINGLE SONG: is an epic journey into love and emotions. Absolutely stunning this band. Listened HUNDREDS of times. It is it's own world of music. Because I was a radical revolutionary: Danger is in my top 5: the lyrics can only be understood if you participated in the liberal movement of the late 90s to early 2000s: when you realized the movement sold out.
Saw him downtown Minneapolis. He did a hell of a job!
They did a nice job at Basilica Block Party in 2018. Liked their set better than Cake’s, for sure.
only the first half of blue (the part cadogan was involved with) was good, the otehr half is trash. Wow you really glazed over Kevin's ouster......
I remember these guys! I also remember that Semi-Charmed Life was inescapable in the late 90s. It was in constant rotation on the radio!!! I'm proud to have grown up in the 90s too, man!!
I just realized this was 4 years old as you didn't mention "Screamer" "We are Drugs" "Band Apart" etc...
