The tape is more for keeping the blade cool and preventing it from burning the wood. The adhesive in the tape somehow helps burning. I always recommend at least a layer of clear packaging tape when cutting ANY hardwood. Try it on a sample piece and you will be amazed at the difference. For back side tear out, it is best to use reverse-tooth blades. There is an article on blade selection on the free page of my site here: www.sheilalandrydesigns.com/free-pattern There are lots of articles that will help with a variety of issues.
