Agreed, Italy was very strong in the 1978 World Cup (having eliminated England in the qualifiers) though a touch fortunate against the beautiful French team of the time (Platini, Rocheteau, Six and Tresor), coming from behind to win 2-1. Had Italy progressed to the final, Argentina (their opponents) might, psychologically, have had greater cause for concern, the Azzuri already deserved winners against the hosts in an earlier group game. This match, incidentally (Italy - Netherlands), was not a semi-final as such, but a deciding group game, the format of the tournament being radically different to the unwieldy, elephantine competition of today.
Very rough match and unfortunately the poor state of the pitch is evident here. This was the only match played in sunshine at Monumental stadium as the rest were night matches or played in overcast weather, Buenos Aires having a more humid climate than the inland cities Córdoba, Mendoza and Rosario that receive little rain in winter. I still like the look of the Monumental stadium during that era and somehow prefer it to our modern times.
