i live in the U.S. gran mothers side is irish. i found this man on here one night while i was bored. after i joined the Marines i listened to him quite often. i like his mucis because it doesnt pretend to offer anything more than what he tells: no false stories here. the man was true awesomeness. i cannot imagine the solemn pride that must belong to his family to know that he brought so much happiness to so many....if only for a little while.

@@MrSalvadorFuentes he got out of that in his older age, though. Tell the rest of the story, please. Ronnie Drew and Ciaran Bourke both actually used to playfully chide him for it; you can hear some of this on their 1964 live performance at the Cecil Sharpe House in London.
Also, Luke went back to his Catholic faith right before he reposed. I pray that he is in Heaven with the Lord. He brought so many people joy, not just in Ireland, but all around the world.

Just gonna add another bump to this, since it’s been a couple years. I absolutely love this version of this song. I literally weep, knowing I missed out on ever hearing him in person. Even many of his happy songs bring tears of sadness to my eyes. What a beautiful voice and soul behind it. As others have said before, we shall never see (nor hear) his like again. At least he has inspired some to try.

Watched a program about him on RTE the other night. Gave a real insight into his life. He wasn't republican or anything like that, he lent his voice to lots of causes of injustice. Wonderful program and really sad. It was great to watch, as until a few montsh ago I'd never heard him. Now I'm glad I've been able to get some of his songs and appreaciate the great sound of a true folk singer.

There is not autotune here, back when he was alive, if you didn't have the stuff to be a performer you didn't make it. Now, if you can half-way sing, they'll auto-tune you and you'll make millions, if Luke was to come back, he'd get on stage and bring these modern performers to tears in sheer awe of his greatness.

About four years ago I was digging the land
With me brogues on me feet and me spade in me hand
Says I to me self, what a pity to see
Such a fine strapping lad footing turf round Tralee
With me too ren a na, with me too ren a na
With me too ren and you ren a na
Well I buttered me brogues, an' shook hands with me spade
An' away down the road, like a dashing young blade
When up comes a sergeant an he asks me to 'list
Arrah, sergeant a grá, stick a bob in me fist!
With me too ren a na, with me too ren a na
With me too rеn and you ren a na
Well herе is a shilling as I've got no more
When you get to headquarters you'll get half a score
And a quitch ah comeen, says I
"Sergeant goodbye you'd not wish to be quartered and neither would I."
With me too ren a na, with me too ren a na
With me too ren and you ren a na
Now the first thing they gave me it was a red coat
With a fine strap of leather to go 'round me throat
And the next thing they gave me, I asked what was that
And they told me it was a cockade for me hat
You might also likeWith me too ren a na, with me too ren a na
With me too ren and you ren a na
And the next thing they gave me, they called it a gun
With powder an ball an' a place for me thumb
First it spit fire, lads, and then it spewed smoke
An' it gave me oul shoulder such a hell of a stroke
With me too ren a na, with me too ren a na
With me too ren and you ren a na
And the first place they sent me was down to the sea
All on board of a warship bound for the Crimea
Three sticks in the middle all rolled round with sheets
Lord, she walked through the water without any feet!
With me too ren a na, with me too ren a na
With me too ren and you ren a na
And when at Balaclava we landed quite sound
Cold, wet, and hungry we lay on the ground
Next morning for action the bugle did call
And we had a hot breakfast of powder and ball
With me too ren a na, with me too ren a na
With me too ren and you ren a na
Well we fought at the Alma, likewise Inkermann
But the Russians they whiled us on the Redan
In scalin' the walls there, meself lost an eye
And a big Russian bullet ran away with me thigh
With me too ren a na, with me too ren a na
With me too ren and you ren a na
Well 'tis often I think of me name and me home
And the days that I spent cutting turf at my home
But the fire was so thick and the bullet so hot
I lay down in the ditch, lads, for fear I'd be shot
With me too ren a na, with me too ren a na
With me too ren and you ren a na
Well 'twas there that I lay stretched upon the cold ground
Heads, legs, and guts they were scattered all around
I wish that me ma and me cleaveens were nigh
So they'd bury me decent and give a loud cry
With me too ren a na, with me too ren a na
With me too ren and you ren a na
Well they brought me a doctor, he soon staunched the blood
And he made me an elegant leg made of wood
They gave me a medal and tenpence a day
So contented with Síle, I'll live on half pay
With me too ren a na, with me too ren a na
With me too ren and you ren a na

'Canons honour men killed in Crimean war' unknown press article from a few years ago.

    March 17 2014 04:58 PM
THE people of Tralee walk past them on a daily basis but, as is often the case with such familiar landmarks, many may not be aware of the true significance the iconic twin cannons that stand on either side of the Tralee's Courthouse steps.
Given the current crisis that is unfolding in Crimea it's perhaps timely to note that one of the cannons was erected in memory of the 55 Kerrymen who died while serving in the British armed forces during the Crimean War of 1854 to 1856.
The dead included soldiers ranking from privates to officers and one can see many familiar local family names emblazed on the side of the ornate stone plinth that supports the cannon.
The two cannons, which were used by the British in various Asian campaigns, were erected outside the courthouse in the late 1800s to honour the Kerrymen who fell in Crimea and also during the Indian Mutiny campaign of 1857 and the Chinese War of 1858 to 1860.
All told about 1,000 men from Kerry fought with the British Imperial forces in those three campaigns.
It's also worth noting that the decommissioned cannon were still explosive until just a few years ago. In late 2012 five sticks of gelignite, detonators and a fuse were found stuffed into one of the them. The explosives, which were viable, had lain undiscovered in the cannon for over 20 years following a failed attempt by republicans to destroy the memorial.

recently some people asked me to sing "modern" songs and I was amazed how easy it was, like it took no effort at all.
afterwards people were amazed at my singing for the first time but after I was done, I felt like the songs had no soul and I felt like a hollow instrument.
