  • As a reminder--I am not a fire safety expert or electrician and following what I show in this video does not mean that your printer is safe. You are responsible for reviewing your printer for potential safety issues and accounting for any potential failure modes.
    Today I have a quick video going over a redundant power cutoff setup I'm working on for my 3D printers! This is a "last line of defense" in addition to your printer firmware safety guards and any other safety measures you may have (such as cutting power to your printer if your firmware detects a fault). The intention with this device is to make sure that if an electrical fire occurs and other safety measures you have in place malfunction, power will get automatically cut off to prevent feeding the fire with additional energy.

    For those looking, the power strip is a “DLI control relay” and the smoke detector is a “system sensor 4wtr-b”. Both appear to be available at Amazon.

    Instead of using a second detector why not wire up a siren to the normally open side?

    this is meant to be connected to an alarm control panel. But Interesting!!
    Note. They make these detectors with a soundr in it.

      Yes! It is more of an industrial smoke detector, so I'm kind of hacking it together for this purpose. I'll have to hunt around to find one with the alarm built in, that would be ideal!

    Hey, sorry if I’m way off base. If I were to plug my stove into that power bar and use that smoke detector, would my stove automatically turn off whenever my smoke detector goes off?

    I am having trouble getting the alarm to send the signal to the relay. Using the same relay and alarm as you.

    Hhhm, wouldn’t it turn the power back on after smoke clears out? 🤔 This can be an issue.

    • @eddietheengineer
      @eddietheengineer  3 года назад +4

      Nope! It’s set to “latch” so once it triggers, you need to remove power from the detector for it to reset

    is that specific relay control module capable of being used to turn the printer on and off from a raspberry pi while also being connected to the smoke detector?

    • @eddietheengineer
      @eddietheengineer  Год назад

      If the raspberry pi was powered separately it may work!

    Most of the good detectors with the ‘trigger’ I’ve found are mains powered. I’ve yet to find any that are dc powered, ideally I would like an ionization/photoelectric combo but I’d settle for ionization only like the one I have at the moment.

      This is a commercial fire alarm device, not a residential hardwired alarm. Search system sensor i3 detector

    • @marcelisdead
      @marcelisdead Год назад

      @Da A why did you want it to be dc powered. Couldn't you just add a plug to a 120 volt detector?

    Great video! I would love to see a test. Does solder smoke sets it off?

    • @eddietheengineer
      @eddietheengineer  3 года назад

      That would be a great idea! I haven't tested with solder smoke, etc--I've entertained the thought of testing runaway hotend failures before and this would be a great use for it--but I haven't had the time recently to make more videos.

      Late reply, but solder smoke shouldn't set off a photoelectric smoke detector. It may set off an ionization detector, though, they're more sensitive
