I don't know where you get the name "Devil's Backbone" for U.S. Highway 550, but from Ouray and Silverton it is known as the "Million Dollar Highway". Why? Because it was either because someone remarked it's going to cost a million dollars to build this highway way back in 1930 (1930 dollars) or because of the scenic views. Then maybe because of both. You failed to mentioned that this paved highway has the highest avalanche paths per mile in all of Canada and the United States combined. That rock slides can happen anytime of the year. That in summer, mud slides can because of thunderstorms. That's there a 8% grade increase climbing this mountain pass highway. That occasionally there's deer, mountain goats, and mountain sheep to avoid. That all these factors including hardly any guardrails makes this highway the most dangerous paved mountain pass highway in all of Canada and the United States combined. The Tenth most dangerous worldwide.
This guy is full of bullshit for the most part. The pictures are not even of the roads that he is describing.. i’ve driven all of these roads multiple times. And would rather drive them than Los Angeles or New York City
