    Very entertaining.
Reminds me of Cliff Young an Australian potato farmer who won the inaugural. Melbourne to Sydney ultra marathon of 875 kilometres. Cliff who was 61 back in 1984 ran in his work overalls and boots, minus his dentures, was trailing badly at the end of the first day. While all the other competitors settled down for 6 hours sleep, Cliff didn't. He ended up winning by 10 hours. Cliff hadn't realised there was prize money ($10,000) and felt bad for the other 5 who had completed the race and split the prize money between them, keeping none for himself. He became an overnight celebrity. The next year at 62 years old he married a 23 year old woman in a big ceremony held at a huge shopping complex. Prior to the marriage he was still living with his mother.
Sorry, went off thoughty2 subject matter, but I thought it was a good story that maybe someone in the world might like

Legitimately gasped out loud when you said Edward Weston was killed by a car. That’s so awful honestly. I have also been hit by a car in a crosswalk but thankfully survived. That car also failed to yield to a pedestrian. I am just imagining the fear he must have felt seeing this giant unfamiliar machine coming at him and realizing it was going to hit him, and it just breaks my heart to know it was while he was doing his favorite sport that he had been doing for decades before cars were even a problem. That just feels like such a cruel ending. :(
On a lighter note though I cracked up laughing when you said Abraham Lincoln himself came out to greet him. For some reason the mental image of that is just hilarious to me.

There's some kind of pedestrianism where I live. A few dutch towns and cities around where I live are called "De Langstraat" and they made the event "De 80 van de langstraat" (The 80 of the Langstraat) where people walk 80km (a little under 50 miles) in one go, you start at 8pm and the last person has to finish at 4pm the following day, if you finish after that you're disqualified. I've partaken in this challenge once and failed (Got to 46 miles tho) but I was 16 back then, I'm almost turning 20 so I'm getting ready to challenge my body once more when the whole pandemic is over, to see if my mind is capable of doing it this time. I highly encourage people to just take a bit of time to challenge themselves to do this. I've learned a lot about my body and mind while training for this challenge, and I've had a lot of fun actually doing it.

Since no one else has given you even a guess to this good question, I will give you one. It is only a guess. You said one looked like a Razor, well from the sound of it you might want something to fend off someone trying to change the outcome. A Razor, or knife is small but effective and never needs reloading. I hike a fair amount and find a walking stick to be very useful. It helps keep your balance, has literally stopped me from falling after triping on something. It is helpful in climbing up a hill or stepping up onto a rock, you can literally pull yourself up with it. Some people like a longer one, others like a shorter one. Beyond my suggestions here I don't have an answer for you. Hope this either helps or gets you thinking how the item they carry might be useful.

As the crow flies that's about 6,000 miles according to Google, and of course following the few established roads and paths of the time would have been a much farther distance.

@@chmchn Average walking speed by age -
      20 to 29 = 3.0 to 3.04mph
      30 to 39 = 3.0 to 3.2
      etc.
I'm 5'9, i do have short legs, but I still keep a quicker pace than the majority of people I see walking around my area, or when I walk with friends. I'm not a massive hiker, but i tend to walk 6 - 10 miles a day. Longer walks are around 12 - 18 miles. Occasionally I will do the 3 peaks of my area, around 27 miles. My speed varies between about 3.1 - 3.6mph across all terrain and elevations. These aren't impressive stats, and if I was wanting to compete, then i can quicken my pace, this is just my default walking pace. But that is not my point. My point is that the average person does not walk at 4 miles per hour.

    • @chmchn

@@chmchn Again the average walking speed is 3 miles per hour... You must be walking abnormally fast.
I was told as a child that the average speed was 4miles per hour on road, and 3 cross country. So grew up with this assumption, and was aware I had a slightly quicker pace than most. (I have been complained at on multiple occasions) So assumed i must have a decent pace. it was only with the advent of accurate GPS tracking of distance and speed I found I walked around 3.5 and was surprised by this. But sure enough the math seems to add up with the duration of walks. Yet i still hold a quicker pace than those i walk with and need to adjust down to match.

    • @chmchn
      @chmchn 3 года назад

@@darkraft1020 I think you are on the low end of the average. Maybe what you're seeing is a social or cultural variance, but anything moving 3 miles per hour where I'm from is really slow. 3.5 is understandable, but 3 is barely over the speed a car parallel parks.

Elliot Denman was a our president and a 1956 Race Walking Olympian.
I competed in many races including the London to Brighton Walk, which I failed to finish, but
did manage about 22 mile, paltry but I was new to the sport at the time.
It's still a popular and demanding sport with, as you so eloquently show,
    quite an interesting past.
