The Phantom Menace PC Game is Pure Vibes👌

- Of all the Star Wars Episode One PC tie-in games, the movie adaptation feels like it would be the most boring one. But oh no. The Phantom Menace PC game from 1999 is a weird, janky tank control nightmare and I LOVE it.
When I’ve spoken to people about the Phantom Menace tie-in game, all I’ve ever heard was positivity. We just don’t see Star Wars stuff like this any more. There are no tie-in games for any of the new Star Wars films or Disney+ shows. And the new games are extremely polished and don’t take a lot of risks.
All of the Episode One CD-ROM games are so weird. And they're happy to be weird, too. I love that this era of Star Wars is so happy to be strange, inconsistent, even unhinged.

It's ironic how much you spoke about vibes in this video because that's exactly what this video was. Just a comfy funny trip down memory lane with an extremely jankfest video game. Perfect stuff
I REMEMBER PUSHING MAUL INTO THE PIT BACK IN THE DAY. I think it soft-locked the game.
Well this is just the perfect video for a relaxing Saturday. You rock, Matty!
Thank you so much, Matt. You're too kind 💗
This is the most Playstation 1-looking PC game I've ever seen!
Speaking of vibes… my local pc world had a setup you could play this whilst parents were browsing.
A massive superstore, with just 3 people in it while you experience this for the first time…You can’t buy atmosphere like that…
Oh yeah that sounds amazing. I remember loving demo setups when I was younger.
I miss real PC World
This has to be the best video about one of my favourite childhood games I've seen. Thank you so much for not only a fair assessment, but also your glowing praise for everything I always loved about it.
If you love this, you may also love Hype: The Time Quest, a fantasy RPG based on Playmobil. It's another childhood favourite of mine.
You're very welcome! I'm glad you enjoyed the video and I will absolutely be checking out a Playmobil RPG!
I'd put money down that this game is the only reason anyone remembers Captain Panaka exists.
HOW DARE YOU!
You can kiss your doll franchise goodbye!
We needed an Episode II game so that people would remember Captain Typho
19:19 I'll be thinking about that cursed long Obi-Wan lightsaber model for the rest of my life. You're totally right, this has long been up there with Obi-Wan and Power Battles as "just another bad Phantom Menace game" but glad you've reevaluated it. Really miss the charming jank of this era
Thank you. The arc of my channel has been fun. I'm finally coming out as that guy who just wants all the janky old games to be appreciated. Bring back silly little games!
i remember having so much fun playing it, but also the frustration that came with some design decisions
never made it past naboo ...
enjoying seeing all the people who have love for this game. they dont make them like this anymore
I remember playing this game before seeing the movie as a kid, and maybe having a slightly overinflated sense of both how important and how cool Captain Panaka was
Justice for Panaka. The true hero of the Prequel Trilogy.
It's crazy to think that this game is the closest we've got to 1313
Oof, this is cursed to think about
Haha yeah that's absolutely horrible 😂
Random and very specific fact about myself in relation to this game. When this game came out I was learning English at the time. I believe that in the Tatooine level you can disengage from dialogue with NPCs with the “Never mind” option. I noticed that every time I picked that and heard Qui Gon say “never mind” it would exit me out of the dialogue interaction. So I thought to myself “ooooh that must mean forget it or disregard what I said.” In Spanish of course lol.
The Episode I game always struck me as LucasArts assuming you've seen the movie and allowing you to exlpore the edges of it. It doesn't really take much time to or concern itself with explaining the plot of the film, it's just doing its own thing within the confines of what you see on screen.
However, an entire video dedicated to the game, but no mention of the main menu screen? Those film clips they had for each option SUSTAINED ME for the couple of weeks' wait between the release of the game and the release of the movie
The Mos Espa Jawa turret section is insane, what a crazy thing to put into the level, clearly a designed mini-challenge. By the end they're appearing with personal shield generators and rocket launchers :D
Haha yeah, and then turrets pop out of the ground! I recorded the whole thing but just wanted to show a little snippet. Absolutely amazing.
I had it, for the playstation. The tatooine levels were like hell.
I always played the Tatooine level along with the last level fighting maul.
The game is a mixed bag, but it has something going for it.
I played the PS1 version though.
For all its faults, TPM came out exactly when it needed to for my generation. The prequel era influenced so many things in the gaming fandom, especially in the Jedi Knight trilogy of games with the fan made mods and maps.
This game in particular was absolutely phenomenal to little 12 year old me. Like what the absolute heck is going on? I love it.
Also, got chills when Duclare Chateau came on. Literally the very first note I recognized it. Alexander Brandon is one of the best.
22:20 "So, you could say that I did a better job at getting people off the streets of Coruscant than both the Republic and the Jedi."
The Republic did a great job of keeping them off the streets. They live in the sewers 😔
This game was AMAZING! I remember playing this game with my brother and Dad when the movie first came out and we took turns playing. Gotta admit there was some moments that were near impossible to beat/complete but I LOVED it!
Same here! We got TPM, Force Commander, X Wing Alliance and X Wing vs Tie Fighter all in one day for £5 each.
I have strange love and hate feelings for this game. My copy always glitched and froze up at naboo. So
I always played the first level.
Oh no, what a shame! That first level is a total classic, though. But that sucks that you never managed to get to Otoh Gunga!
Loved this game as a kid. I never actually made it all the way past Tattooine at the time, but it was just so much fun to explore all the nooks and crannies and side missions of those levels. And then of course being able to just go GTA-mode and kill all the npcs. With all the different ways you could trigger an instant-game over in the game, the fact that you could keep playing while massacring the town was wild at the time. It's funny you preferred the Coruscant level, I played the game again a couple of years ago and that level made me stop playing.
I've heard a few people say they didn't like the Panaka lavel. I could have played a whole game as Panaka!
There may have been others I missed (not sure if you could in Jedi Knight), but this was the first Star Wars game I played that allowed me to deflect blaster bolts back at enemies with a lightsaber. That alone was enough to make this game awesome in my book
Sounds like you should watch my video of the evolution of video game lightsabers! 😉
I was one of those kids that played this over and over. There's an interesting story about how the Official UK Playstation magazine at the time gave it 9/10 after they were given the full works at Skywalker Ranch and then had to do a re-review where they gave it 6/10 😅
Haha, you can't be given a day out at the ranch and then pan the game!
@@MattyStoked Something something ethics in video game journalism 🤣
@@joh2434 oofff let's not
HYPE! - gonna brew a coffee then sit watching this in the garden 😎.
Saturday morning garden vibes 😙
Commenting too much on this video haha. But agree with so much on this one. It's a game from an era of games with charm, where the jank adds not only to the charm but also genuinely to the humour. A game like this has a humour to it that isn't just laughing at the game's ineptitude, it's like being in on the joke. It's the Blackadder of gaming, The Thin Blue Line, and as you say, all the polish in the world can't replicate that. Games of that era really captured whatever it was that engendered that feeling, Anachronox is another one that nailed it. Or Deus Ex. The way an NPC will just wave his hand the same way while talking as if gesticulating in a meaningful way. The way you can say "Jabba is even more grotesque than I imagined" without it all feeling 'snarky'. My friend said that Fallen Order contained this charm, and it almost does on seldom occasion (the Dathomir lads shouting "interloper!" at you and the bounty hunters turning up and thinking they're the bees knees) but for the most part really didn't. It's the weirdo 6/10 fondness that outshines the 7/10 safeness. The late 90s and early 2000s were so rich for SW content. Many of the SW games of that era that I've played didn't feel self important or grandiose as such. Playing as Ace Azzameen in X Wing Alliance talking to his big sister, playing as Brenn Tantor and his brother Dellis. They were just random lads in a bigger world. And my goodness the materials you'd get in the game boxes. The Force Commander manual is out of this world. But even the TPM one is no slouch. You know what feels distinctly like all that in Fallen Order? The map. Grimy janky holographic nonsense haha.
I have yet to play Obi Wan on rhe Xbox, looks very similar to TPM.
Love that I'm seeing your name all over this comments section. Thank you for the high-effort comments! You nailed exactly why I love this era. Being in on the joke is exactly it. Thank you mate, your continued support is amazing 🤩
Great video and great channel! I know you'll blow up at some point and reach a million subscribers. Your content is really good.
Maybe one day! I really love that you have been with me now for years and you've always been saying this. You gee me up, mate. And when that day comes, I'll know you were here from the beginning 💕
I loved this game, finished once on PS1, and who knows how many times on PC...love it stil! ;)
2:54 Jedi Knight? I hear that's a pretty cool game!
Heyyyy here he is! Great to see you. I hear that Jedi Knight game is alright, yeah 😎
I never realised there was a ep1 game! I thought it was jedi power battles
JPB is an all-time great. No wonder it overshadowed this one :D
I was 15-ish when it came out and played at launch. Liked the production value but hated the gameplay. Seeing this video some 20+ years later makes me wanna replay and re-evaluate it :)
Please do! I'd love to hear your thoughts on this one 😊
@@MattyStoked In retrospect, the game isn't bad but was a disapointment because of the ridiculous hype around The Phantom Menace. Expectations were just too high.
they should've made a stealth tactic star wars games, like commandos and desperados and robin hood legend of sherwood
OMG I would LOVE a Commandos/Desperados/Robin Hood style squad-based RTT game, set in Star Wars. Bad Batch would be a perfect fit for this!
Great game about a wonderful movie
My sister and I played the ever-loving shit out of this entirely mediocre title. Love the game to death.
Hi, I get this error when trying to install the game:
"The %s setup program was unable to launch. You can install %s by running SETUP.EXE directly from the %s CD-ROM disc."
Any way around this?
Might be that you're trying to run the installer on a newer OS that doesn't support it. There is a newer installer (linked in the description) which might help.
@@MattyStoked works now, thanks!
AKA That game where Obi Wan can get dismembered by a giant fan
I remember playing this game, it sucked
Boooooo! 😆
