Speaking of accurate depictions, the only truly accurate portrayal of a person in shock I've ever seen in a film was Tom Hanks in Captain Phillips. The last ten or fifteen minutes of the film, after he's rescued and receiving aid from a Navy medic, he almost put me into a state of shock. He couldn't speak or articulate anything, he had to be told to breath, every question had to be asked repeatedly. He couldn't focus on anything. It's a powerhouse scene in an otherwise middling film.

18:40 Sending a dead body into space is the traditional funereal practice in lots of (fictional) space-borne cultures. It's based on how sailors used to dispose of bodies at sea as part of funerals aboard ships. The assumption is you don't have the room and/or refrigeration to be able to keep the body on your ship long enough for you to reach land (or planetfall) for burial.

One of my favorite behind the scenes facts was H.R. Geiger, the artist who designed the Xenomorph, apparently got held up in LAX airport because of his concept art. The security didn't know what to make of it and Ridley Scott had to vouch for him that it was for his movie. Geiger had taken a lot of inspiration from phallic and yonic imagery, BDSM costumes and combinations of organic and machinery. One of the greatest reasons the horror in Alien works so well is because of how the imagery is supposed to instill discomfort in the viewer. I highly recommend watching some of the behind the scenes videos to understand how creative they got with this film.

But to your reply on my message, I will say again that some of Cameron's films got cut short as "action films", such as The Abyss, and I think it was always a mistake. I think Alien plays much better with the original cut, but I don't think the short version of Aliens is a good way to go ever. It cut out the most important part of Ripley's character. I don't really want to keep hashing this out, because we're treading too close to spoiler territory, but yeah I strongly suggest the Special Edition, always.

When the Alien comes out of Cain's chest, in the script, it just says Alien "emerges". They didn't tell the rest of the cast how that happened or what the Alien looked like. So, the reactions of everyone was genuine surprise.

This is a myth that's been told for decades. The cast was very aware SOMETHING was going to emerge from John Hurts' chest. He was all rigged up in front of them, so it was pretty obvious. What caused their genuinely shocked reactions was the amount of blood that sprayed out of the contraption.

It's all covered really well in the documentary. The actors had all toured the prop department and seen everything. The whole film was extensively rehearsed and refined as they went along, everyone knew exactly what was going on, except for the sheer amount of blood.
Weaver tells an interesting story about going to film the chest burster scene and finding Dan O'Bannon and Ron Shusett in the corner, both dressed in waterproof coats, and giggling like schoolboys, as they were in on the secret, that there would be gallons of blood.

It was so good to see Lamby with you and know you weren't alone for this. 😉
I loved your curiosity and your questions. You brought up things I've never given much thought to despite having seen this movie numerous times.
Regarding Kane's body being jettisoned into space, I assume the crew thought there might be more parasites in the body and didn't want to take any (more) chances.
Congrats on making it through this classic space thriller. Movies like this build up the tension and allow the viewer's fear and imagination do most of the heavy lifting. You were freaking yourself out before anything scary had even happened -- which is exactly why this movie is classic.
Aliens is less psychological thriller and more action with some humor tossed in the mix, making it faster-paced and equally as good -- just in a slightly different way. Highly recommended. I think you'll like Aliens even more than Alien.
Thanks for the good time, you two! 🤗🥰

This is in my top 5 favorite movies of all time. The atmosphere is set up perfect for suspense. The Nostromo is a massive ship, but it always feels claustrophobic unless the crew are right there together. The practical effects and lighting really nurture tension and they don't waste that tension on unnecessary jump-scares. They translate the isolation of space pretty well to the interior of the ship.

    H. R. Geiger, the artist and creator of the Alien creature and other components in this movie derived his imagery from insects. If you look up his art imagery you'll notice they're an athropomorphic cross between humanoid and insects. Geiger did a lot of heroin and he had terrible nightmares that scared him and so he painted those images he had from his dreams onto cavasses using a airbrush. Dan O' Bannon, who was a co-writer of the original script for this movie knew of Geiger's paintings and had a book of them to shoe director Ridley Scott and the rest is history when Scott saw what Geiger had created on canvass.

Ash's character really changed the dynamic of the story. It's easy for characters to make dumb decisions for the sake of moving the plot forward, but in the case of Alien, it's done a lot more thoughtfully.
Dallas and Lambert want to get Kane back onto the ship, even though it's not a good idea. We can definitely understand their desire, Kane is their friend; but Ripley is the voice of reason saying "no, this could be dangerous."
Ash opening the airlock and letting them in would typically just be a dumb decision by the character, and that's kind of what it looks like initially. But later we learn that his action was extremely intentional: his priority is the alien, not the crew. It was a simple, smart, effective choice that helps make the story that much more believable.

    • @keysersoze8110

And once that is done, the best chance the crew have to capture or kill the alien is immediately after it bursts out of Kane’s chest. But who is it that shouts “No, don’t touch it!” and allows it to get away?

Funny you mention "Firefly". The crew of the Betty in "Alien Resurrection" is the obvious forerunner of the same crew.
So glad you did this. It was a blast watching my second favourite movie of all time with you.

My favorite reactor! Turbulence not in space, but when landing within the atmosphere of another planet. Dallas is a good leader. He trained Maverick in Top Gun and fathered Shelby in Steel Magnolias. Lambert was in Alfred Hitchcock's, The Birds.

The smartest member of the crew was Jones. He didn't trust no stupid people, he knew the threat from the beginning, and he also survived, with Ripley's help. But that ALSO makes him smart, he befriended the most cat-like human to help increase survival.

The T in t minus stands for Time. The time at that moment minus the time left. :-).

Wait till you see Alien 2. It has more action.
When this movie came out, I was surprised Ashe was a robot, but I was not surprised that his mission was to bring the Alien home for sale and use as a bio-weapon even if doing so meant killing the crew. We were just coming our of the era of AT&T overthrowing Chile's President in a bloody revolution just to turn a profit and our going to war in Vietnam just to support the French rubber tree industry and the head of the CIA showing off to Congress silenced dart pistols designed for assassinating political opponents and Karen Ann Silkwood having an improbable fatal car accident just before she could testify. Nothing evil a corporation does surprises Baby Boomers. .
2001 came first. However, all of the space movies are pretty much stuck with the realities of space travel in much the same way all sea movies, regardless of their being pirates, merchant vessels or battle ships are stuck with an ocean and the need for boats. Consequently the imagery will always be similar. BTW the best sci fi space show in my opinion (and that of many others) was The Expanse. What you see in it, may be what things will be someday.
It is important to note the crew of this freighter/refinery ship was on a voyage of months, if not years duration. Therefore the salary is probably huge and on a par received by someone accepting a six month or one year contract in a foreign country or an Antarctica work station (but with no vacation possible).
In the real world it should not be assumed any intercepted Alien life or signal is friendly. An arriving ship could be the equivalent of a Pizarro or a Cortez. Since we have announced our presence via radio waves and even by launching deep space probes that transmit radio signals back to Earth, if they are out there, they may have noticed us akin to some cats hearing baby mice squeak in their nest. If it is carbon based life both new viruses, and parasites are possible as well as other unwelcome events.
A suggested movie from the 1971, "The Andromeda Strain." (Ignore the recent 2008 TV series..) Andromeda Strain is relevant because in 2020 a Japanese probe similar to the one in the movie brought samples from an asteroid back to Earth for study. Disappointed that an Alien virus did not wipe out humanity NASA repeated the feat in 2023 and collected samples from the Asteroid called Bennu and brought them to Earth. Three days ago NASA announced that they have found in the Bennu sample 14 of the 20 Amino Acids used by life on Earth to make proteins, as well as Ammonia and all 5 of the nucleobases that life on Earth uses. In short, an' Andromeda Strain situation is quite possible.

Wish I could see you face when you realize that Ash and the company knew the signal was a warning before they were even woken up from cryo sleep or landed on the planet in the first place! I also agree with other comments. You must watch Aliens now. One of the best sequels ever. I too would also recommend the special edition version of it. Thanks for making and sharing this. I enjoyed watching it with you.
