I was the one who asked Tomo about hand injury and prevention couple days ago and i am truly amazed by how Tomo not only listens for his subscriber's feedback but how he takes the extra time and effort to provide something this valuable for his subscribers. Thanks Tomo-san for the video and cant wait till I get back on Guitar Widsdom after full recovery !!

I hold my frets down really hard when I play since I learned on acoustic for years before going to electric. I have developed cubital tunnel syndrome with a numb ring and pinky finger. I can already feel the relief after watching and trying the stuff you discussed! Relaxing my fretting hand is a tough habit to break, but this should get me on my way!

Thank you for sharing! That sounds like your acoustic guitar was not properly setup when you purchased it. Most acoustic guitar as new guitar had setup: the nut is a little high so that the guitar won't buzz and the neck can be not straight. Set up for guitar is super important! My acoustic guitars are easier than any electric guitar. You can fix how you play and you can play softer. It will take some time as same as people developed a bad habit in long period of time.

    Hi Tomo,
Thank you for this detailed video! As somebody who has and is still struggling with hand issues, this is definitely a good video to look at. I will try out the hand exercises and see if they help. Even so, I find that most of my pain comes from when I play chords. For some reason I struggle to find the right wrist position and most of the time I end up with a sore or even painful hand afterwards. It is usually the worst when I first wake up.
Can you do a video on how to play chords with proper wrist position? Specifically, extended chords are something that I would love to get into. I enjoy playing them but like I said they can usually hurt my hand quite a bit. I tried playing your chords in “isn’t she lovely” and found it was difficult to do the big stretch chords like the Cm11 or F#7(b13). Beautiful chords but hard to play lol.
If it is not too much to ask, could you also go over how to play these chords while standing in the same video? It helps being able to see how they are played both while sitting and standing, though I Imagine there is little difference depending on where the guitar is set like in this video.
I definitely need to try the solfège exercise you played. As someone who is in choir, it seems super cool to practice on guitar.
Thank you for the video Tomo!

Good advice. The healthier you are, the healthier your hands are. Eat properly, natural foods only unless no other option. Drink clean water only. Avoid sugar/alcohol/drugs, especially sugar that crap is horrendous for the body, alcohol/drugs as sparingly as possible. Run, jog, walk, bike, treadmill ect. as per your doctors advice. Situps/pushups/roman chairs for core and to keep lower back strong and flexible. Lift weights too but most importantly do your reverse curls on your forearms. As guitarists/bassists all we do is push down with our fingers reverse curls pull back on fingers and balance out the forearms otherwise you can easily get tendonitis. Balance is key.

I used to practice hours but I never practiced full hour! I always put breaks in between. That's we need to understand what people are saying "Practice 6-8 hours" VS "How to divided many things in many hours" Generally practice 5-15 minutes & do physical exercises without guitar.

I you started guitar 8 months ago I'd say 6 hours of intensive practice in a day is too much. Your tendons and muscles need more time to develop the strength and endurance necessary to put out so many hours a day, people practicing 10+ hours have been playing for years. Just take it easy. 1 or 2 hours a day of intensive practice are more than enough, and take a break in between each half hour. Then practice more hours if you want, but make sure to be relaxed, don't over stress yourself. You don't want to develop repetitive strain injury like I did when I went crazy with my practice schedule, I've never fully recovered from that shit 12 years ago. Play the long game.
