  • The best way to know when to replace your rifle barrel is by tracking your shots. However, if you’ve lost track, purchased a used rifle, or never started tracking, you’ll need to go through a process of elimination to identify the cause of your accuracy issues. This involves testing and fixing other potential problems before concluding that the barrel needs replacing. In this video, we guide you through this process of elimination to help you diagnose and resolve accuracy problems before deciding to get a new barrel.

    MDT was born out of a single purpose: to provide better value and better accuracy for precision rifles. The first MDT chassis was developed from the ground up based on the needs of shooters.
    Our engineers verified every function and feature based on the input from competitive shooters. The end result was a game-changing product called the TAC21 that continues to perform at the range, in the field and in competitions around the world.
    Today, MDT chassis, magazines and accessories are still developed the same way.
    We collaborate, question and verify our concepts with precision shooters from around the globe to ensure that every MDT product is designed with the same single purpose: to provide our customers with the absolute best product possible.

    Replace the firing pin spring. A week worn out spring will cause higher SD, ES and larger groups. Great video 👍

      How long would you expect a firing pin spring to last, say on your typical custom action. Should they be replaced when you replace a barrel?

    I bought a "shot out" 17 Remington barrel. Previous owner was using 20 grain bullets and said after 1000 rounds groups opened up so it was shot out. I bought a box of 25grain noslers and it shoots 1/4MOA and for an encore that's amazing. I do have to clean it every 20 rounds or so but that's pretty standard for any .12-.20 cal guns.

    The crown at the end of your barrel is a pretty dead giveaway also. You should have an 11-13 degree crown. If it looks flat, it's done

    What bore guide is that? Anyone?

    I was getting key holing from a Grande 30-06. I cleaned the barrel numerous times and got many patches out that were blue in color. Possible causes of key holing?

    • @michaelhill6451
      @michaelhill6451 4 месяца назад

      Possible causes of keyholing could be shooting bullets that are too heavy for your twist rate, shooting at targets that are very far away with a bullet that destabilizes as it goes through the transonic zone, a barrel with rifling that is so damaged it doesn't spin the bullet, a muzzle device interacting with the bullet as it leaves the barrel, or undersized bullets (in terms of bullet diameter). What ammo are you shooting through it? I once read in a forum about someone who was having issues with keyholing out of a 308. It turns out they accidentally fired 6.5 Creedmoor in their 308.
      Anyway, if the ammo is good, I would highly suggest getting a borescope (you can get a decent borescope for about $90 these days) or taking it to a gunsmith to have them take a look with a borescope. Keyholing could be indicative of a problem that may result in a damage to your fire/you if it isn't corrected.

    I’ve worn out a few barrels, there has never been a question when one died. Every one had the groups open up a fair amount and the speed drop off over 10%. The last one was a 26N, same load went from 3520fps down to 3150ish. It’s never given me a poi shift, or randomness. Groups open up and speeds drop off significantly.

    My advice if your gun was shooting good and stops would be to buy a borescope and clean your gun. If you don't have a borescope your gun almost certainly isn't actually clean. I had a Tikka CTR that went from < 0.5 MOA to over 0.75 MOA for 5-shot groups. I got a borescope and it turned out even though I thought the gun was clean it was actually full of copper. After cleaning it properly it went back to < 0.5 MOA.

    You can move the bullet deeper in the case as well, especially if the rounds won’t fit in your mag anymore.

      No

      Yes, you just have to find a new seating depth deeper.

      .....depends on load....too deep can mean pressure spike.....depends if you're talking .005 to .020 deeper, or, if you're talking .060-.120....that = not good.

    • @jeffmiller2433
      @jeffmiller2433 4 месяца назад

      That is true, however my last load, I moved the bullet out until my mag length said no, so I went back to the original starting length and went in 0.007” and it was back to shooting. So no chance of big pressure spikes in my case.

    I see that you have been hearing me.
    I have a gooooood video for you. If a barrel it is burned, does works use slower twist rate bullets?.If you discover that it is true, you can give a new life a barrel.
