Lagoon 52S Greatcircle - Windforce 10 to Ibiza (ep.16)

  • Right in the first couple of weeks after delivery of Greatcircle in Bordeaux the cat was tested in some challenging conditions. Flying from Gibraltar to Ibiza with over 50 knots of wind in the back. May have broken the all time speed record with a Lagoon with 27,2 knots....
    Very happy to have an experienced skipper on board in the beginning so we could experience how well the 52S handles even in conditions like this.
    Since then Greatcircle has been cruising the Med and we recently decided to join the ARC at the end of 2019.

    That Seal song is PERFECT for sailing. The message in that song PERFECTLY describes how sailors think! Heavy wind? Bring it on! We are never going to survive unless we get a little crazy! Loved this video!

      Back in '92, my future wife and I were, "having fun", in the ocean, just 100' or so off a Florida beach, when we got back to the beach, that song was playing. Neat moment!!! :)

    Now that was exciting. Glad you had the seas on your six (following) rather than your beam or your nose. Nice too that you had an experienced enough captain to know the boat could handle it. As you said in the end the weakest link on board is the fear and anxiety the people bring with them... very wise saying.

    Nice!! I did a down wind leg on the around Puerto Rico race back in the 80s. We had sustained winds of 55 and up. Waves ran to 20 feet , and we had a Beneteau 456 surfing over 25 knots in the swells
    We kept a full main and a 3/4 ounce chute...with a blooper.
    horizon job of the century .
    thanks for this video!!

    Great video - good to see actual TWS and AWS readings to back up your headline. The vid made me even more sure that a Lagoon is a great boat for heavy weather and ocean sailing. Nothing was tied down or secured in the cabin from mugs on the table to cardboard boxes on the shelf and you were able to cook a meal that night. Try that in a monohull.
    I crossed the Atlantic in a Lagoon 410 in pretty horrible weather out of season (30 out of 37 nights at from France had thundersqualls and lightning, plus a few nights with AWS of 40+ and one with 50+). The boat looked after us superbly and of course did not roll as we ran.
    Loved the vid - enjoy. Our next transat will alas be in a monohull which will be safe I'm sure but not nearly as comfortable.

    I sailed in a storm with similar wind speeds and boat speeds, also in a catamaran, while crossing the Atlantic. And yes, during the storm we had life jackets on!
    Normally, we would only wear them during nightwatch when you're on the boat deck alone. But during the storm we wore them all the time, even in the salon, because things can start to go wrong very quickly!
    Sailing life jackets are very low profile because they inflate with a CO2 cartridge when you hit the water. So they're not hard to wear. It's careless to not wear them in those conditions.

    Great video. I know these boats, having sailed a Lagoon 420 for thousands of offshore miles. The boat handled those conditions fine. BUT.....you have always got to be alert. The danger is of course a pitch pole but he never looked close to that. If the boat rounds up a wave can capsize you and in a cat there is no coming back from that like in a monohull. Hence my personal preference for sustained offshore sailing is a monohull. A bridle/drogue off the stern should be part of the heavy air kit to slow you downwind so the wave does not pick you up. But he was never close to that.
    "Those who wait for the wind to ease before heading offshore should never put to sea".

    • @C_R_O_M________
      @C_R_O_M________ 4 года назад +2

      @Captain Downunder A 52ft 30 ton cat will have to have a tsunami behind it to capsize and tsunamis only hit coasts. I don't think you are right on this one. Show me ONE catamaran of that size that has ever capsized without a total fuckup by the crew (like not easing sheets, reefing, changing course and/or disengaging the autopilot). The largest cruising catamaran that capsized I know was an Atlantic 57 in 2010 (autopilot engaged and it was a wind-induced, not wave-induced, capsizing) and that was half the weight of this Lagoon. Are you sure you want to end up turtling in a monohull since it seems you want to take it easy on proactive measures when facing a squall? Because that's what'll happen.

      @@CatGreatcircle Sehr danke Cat Greatcirle. I was in England from 1998 to 2000 AD. In that time I was 4 times to the Nederlands. The first was to Nijkerk, near Utrecht, from were my forbears hail from (1591). In the South of the Netherlands the spoken Dutch was very the same to Afrikaans. In Groeningen it was like German. As you know in 1994 ZA got a total new Government. And the new Government's language policy change. As a Afrikander I feel as a outsider. That was also what Pres. Mbheki (1999-2005) said: "Afrikaners is colonialist of a special kind,. They did not left when the colonial power went away..." In my past, Holland was not seen a friendly country and sporting the Backs(&Communist) to get the Whites out. Dit was bezonders lekker om een TAAL te hoor bijna zoals mijn eigen Moeder taal. Voor Nederland om een verbintenis met die Afrikanders te hebbe. Dat kan maklik als rasisties gezien word door die NIe-Blanke bevolking van ZA. 1 Jan. 2000 AD was ik in die Kerk in Nijkerk. Dat zal ik altijd onthoue.

    • @enderdragoon
      @enderdragoon 2 года назад +7

      I was thinking the same. Most cat capsizes are due to digging in the bow and pitch polling over, opposed to going over sideways. Its the biggest thing I like about the performance cats over typical condo cats is how much more reserve buoyancy they have further out and sharper bows that can cut waves instead of plowing into them and even taking water over the top pulling them down. I think they were turning onto a broad reach though so they can surf the waves more instead of them all just passing under the boat. Cool footage though all around, finding more details about cats in heavy weather is harder to find than mono stuff.

And season the tuna very simple Salt and pepper maybe if you like garlic alittle bit of garlic powder but regardless the balsamic Reduction will be amazing and after you plate it alittle olive oil or whatever you have !! I always enjoy a tuna steak like that with avocado slices and roasted potatoes !! Very simple recipe also everyone have balsamic and olive oil salt pepper and early on in a boat you’ll have a salad mix !! If you have it grill slices of peach’s and plums with some sugar and put that on top of the tuna !!

    Using the main and no headsail in those conditions makes life very difficult for the autopilot. The boat will be constantly trying to round up. Using the headsail, partly furled would be far more relaxed, and safer, as it tends to lift the bow rather than driving it down.
    The 27kt max is almost certainly a GPS glitch. Ours, which is a similar model is showing a 655 kt max.

      The autopilot was doing a fantastic job, never had the feeling manual steering was needed. I am still not able to judge whether furled jib or reefed main would be a better choice with these models where the mast is way back. The 52S owners manual agrees with you as it states mainsail lowered and jib 30-40% at 45 to 55 knots true downwind. As to the speed we saw it go well over 20 knots several times on a surf, the speed seemed to built up regularly and accurate but it’s not really important as we were not in a race and we know we’re not the fastest cat on the planet. It sails really well though and we feel very comfortable and safe in normal conditions now we know the boat can handle abnormal conditions this well.

    Impressive video showing the boats capabilities. Thank you for posting.
    A note to your skipper; “command” is not about having to demonstrate your skill and ability (e.g. handling a vessel in poor weather). It’s about not being in that position in the first place.
    A quick risk assessment (New Boat/ Inexperienced crew/ known poor weather / offshore passage etc..) would have had you safely moored up in harbour waiting for a fairer passage.
    Scenario: What would you have done with a Skipper Overboard?... (Not that at Force 10 there was a life jacket in sight).

    Anything that pushes safe sailing and real experiences rock... how folks fund it should not even be considered relevant. BUT for some folks, not watching what they do not like is never enough... Nasty snarky comments and pompous retorts seem to be easier... TRUE COLORS SHINING THROUGH....SAD...

      If we can avoid it we wouldn’t go in similar conditions again but based on what we saw on other Outremers we won’t need it to surf well over 20 knots. Splash in 1 month...

    Another great video! Particularly liked the aerial shots of Gib as we used to live there. Do you have a Facebook page? I couldn't find it. If not I am sure a lot of Facebook sailors would enjoy following your dream.
