In late 1954, Charles "Sonny" Liston was earning the reputation as the fighter to avoid. Apparently, one man didn't get the message. Watch to get the whole story.
Great story about Sonny, a man who experienced many unusual occurrences. The one you told about his extremely high intelligence is the most amazing. I could stand to hear from more sources about that as the stories you cited were filled with evidence and wonder.
Marty Marshall the only mark on Liston's early boxing career . Liston shouldn't have carried Marshall that long and stopped him quick , and shouldn't have been laughing when he knocked him down either . Liston should have won the decision also which was a SD , but Liston made Marshall pay in there 2nd and third meeting . Liston one of my favorites very underrated fighter because of the Ali fights . Still believe Liston took a dive in the 2nd fight with Ali , nice video again ET.
I think Marshall really enjoyed the limelight after Sonny became champ. I seem to remember reading that he was considering a comeback in 62 or 63 but that might have been so he could keep his name in the papers.

ET is a great sports historian for sure!
A forgotten fact is that in their second fight, which Liston won, Marty scored a knockdown.
Great old boxing story that I had forgotten about. Thanks!

But why did he take a dive?
@@brandocg3207 Mob ties . The same way he was supposed to take a dive against Chuck Wepner but didn't . Liston never fought again .
Liston definitely took a dive vs Ali in the 2nd fight.
"The last man on earth that America wants to see coming down the chimney" What a Christmas reference!
I laughed at that one, too!!
This is RUclips gold

He was the great white hope that night I was there Joe Louis Arena Detroit
This was actually Sonny’s 8th fight, not his 6th.
This is the first time I've seen a picture of Marty Marshall.
cheers
