Egyptian Kufta (Meatballs) Recipe
Ingredients
For the Meatballs:
• 1/2 onion, chopped
• 2 garlic cloves
• 1/3 each: green, orange, and red bell peppers
• A handful of parsley
• 500g ground beef
• 1 tsp salt
• 1/4 tsp black pepper
• 1/4 tsp paprika
• 1/4 tsp barbecue spice
• 1/4 tsp cumin
• 1/4 tsp Italian spices
• 1 tbsp olive oil
• 5 tbsp Italian breadcrumbs
• 1 egg
For the Sauce:
• 2 tbsp oil
• 1 tsp butter
• 1 onion, chopped
• 2 cups tomato sauce
• 1 tsp salt
• 1/2 tsp black pepper
• 1/2 tsp sugar
• 1/4 tsp turmeric
• 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
• 1/4 tsp paprika
• 1/4 tsp onion powder
• 1/4 tsp coriander
• 1/2 tsp garlic powder
• 1/2 cup water
• 1/3 bell peppers (green, red, or orange), chopped
Instructions
1. Prepare the Meatballs:
• In a food processor or blender, combine the onion, garlic, and bell peppers. Add parsley and blend until finely chopped.
• In a bowl, mix the blended vegetables with ground beef. Add salt, black pepper, paprika, barbecue spice, cumin, Italian spices, and olive oil. Mix well.
• Add breadcrumbs and egg to the mixture. Mix with your hands or a spatula until fully combined.
• Shape the mixture into small meatballs.
2. Fry the Meatballs:
• Heat oil in a pan over medium heat.
• Fry the meatballs, turning occasionally, until golden brown on all sides. Set aside.
3. Make the Sauce:
• In a clean pan, heat 2 tbsp of oil with 1 tsp of butter.
• Add chopped onion and sauté until golden.
• Stir in tomato sauce, salt, black pepper, sugar, turmeric, cayenne pepper, paprika, onion powder, coriander, and garlic powder. Mix well.
• Cover and cook the sauce for 10 minutes over low heat.
• Add 1/2 cup water and stir.
4. Combine:
• Add the meatballs and chopped peppers to the sauce.
• Mix gently, cover, and simmer for another 10 minutes.
5. Serve:
Enjoy the Egyptian kufta with pasta, rice, or a side salad for a hearty and flavorful meal!
