Why We're Here: Twin Cities

- Why, with all the possibilities that exist in the world, do we live here in the Twin Cities? In the spring and summer of 2010, we took our camera to the streets of Minneapolis and St. Paul to find people willing to talk, unscripted, on film. The result, this film, is our collective love poem to the Twin Cities.
Filmed on location the spring and summer of 2010 in Minneapolis and St. Paul, Minnesota, the film features an original score by John Munson of the New Standards, the Twilight Hours, Semisonic and Trip Shakespeare, camerawork by Adam Olson and editing by Sam Heyn.

Now 2021.Anytime I missing Minneapolis I always find this video to watch. Great memory ever.
I love Minneapolis it's like a secret city that many people don't know about or take for granted
Oh ya you betcha
What I love most about the Twin Cities is it's unique and distinguishing ability to appeal to every type of demographics. It is the breeding ground for a colorful and vibrant community in which everyone seems to want to be a part of. To put it simply, the TC is great because we love it and it loves us back.
I am from Winnipeg, but soon as I was in Minneapolis for a few days. I loved it. Something about the vibe. The people, businesses, and the land scape. It's beautiful I felt like I belonged there.
I was born (1944) and raised in minneapolis ( eugene field, ramsey, washburn high...anthonies men's clothing, parkway theater, mcrae park etc.) Family moved to los angeles (altadena) in 61' then i moved to vancouver canada in 1969 and back to san francisco in 1981. I've been here ever since. I loved minneapolis and have fond memories of a great city with wonderful people!..my father loved minneapolis with all the hunting (pheasant) and fishing (smelting, lake cottages) after being born and raised in los angeles..truly a wonderful city!
I grew up there, but definitely can say that after seeing the world, I fundamentally do not comprehend at any level why anyone would decide to STAY anywhere...let alone the Midwest. It's a big world out there, kids...
The Twin Cities is, however, much better than most major metro areas in the U.S....including Chicago and Dallas. EXPONENTIALLY better, actually.
I'm from the UK, I am very excited to be coming to Minnesota this summer!
I left minnesota, and I am happy in California.
I came to Minneapolis as a visitor to the U (was considering a transfer) over this weekend. By the end, I signed a lease and met some of the best people on the face of the planet. Thank you, Minneapolis, for being awesome. I think I'm staying for a loooooooooong time.
This makes me feel homesick and I'm still in St. Paul. I keep saying I want to travel and move around, but the Twin Cities will always be home. It's this progressive, artful pocket of goodness in an unexpected place.
teprometo we moved to Colorado and we hate it here. We miss Minnesota alot
Was adopted by traveling parents that were teachers. Lived in 7 different cities in 7 different countries. Seen amazing things, learned amazing things, heard amazing things, but I never felt amazing till I moved here. Minneapolis is wonderful.
There's something to be said about experiencing all of the seasons in a place like the Twin Cities. I think its the people that make it count.
I'm a German who spent one year (1995/1996) in your lovely state (was living in South St.Paul). Minnesota forever! :)
Love it! I was born and raised in the Twin Cities, moved away three times in my 20's only to return...possibly for good!
korygrandy same. My wife and I moved to Colorado and we miss Minnesota alot
we love Twin Cities, Minnesota, we call it Home.Minnesota land of more than 10,000 lakes, parks, sports, culture, clean air and much much more.Nice friendly people and, neighbours earned Minnesota Nice title.I came in in 1964 and neber left.So far we have many sweet memories.Ram G.
still snowing in May.
Born in Texas raised in Jersey. Met my Fiancee on line 6 years ago and Moved to Minnesota. Best move I've ever made. Love the Twin Cities but hate the brutal winters. That Minnesota has. Rest In Peace Prince Nelson Rogers, aka PRINCE!!!!
Minneapolis is honestly the best city ever. It's clean, it's safe, and it's beautiful. I love it so much!
I also left minnesota and I am very happy in southern California.
I don't know why i'm still here, been here all my life and hate it here
Dewhosoever Appreciate it, we moved to Colorado from minnesota and Colorado sucks!!!
The Twin Cities is simply one of the best places to live, on so many levels. The cold winters are the one drawback, but many winters here are not too bad at all. The summers are much more comfortable than many other American cities. It's amazing how educated and literate the population is here, but you tend to find that in places that are liberal.
great video, but if you notice, all of the filming and interviewing was done during spring and summer! Check back in with these people on January 29 and see how there moods are!
I know why I'm here. The Twin Cities metro and all of Minnesota is so great!
My favorite memories of my time in college living in MPLS: Loosely assembled, seemingly spontaneous nighttime bike rides with friends, we'd effortlessly ebb & flow in & out of the pack and around the city. People watching along Nicollet Ave when I'd be in a particularly creative state of mind...Bundling an entire pack of people to walk/bus to some obscure gallery show. The noticeable lack of ego. The inherent and goodhearted weirdness of so many residents... MPLS, I miss you everyday.
I've lived in Duluth, MN all my life and have been thinking of moving to Minneapolis. This video has convinced me to do so. Time to get off my butt and nab an apartment! I know it's an old video but very sweet and inspiring. =)
Did you ever move there?
I left 8 years ago and regret it every day. Raised in Chicagoland, but I still consider the Cities my home.
I love Minneapolis and probably won't leave but I'm afraid of who the target audience is for this video. I don't want the Twin Cities to become Portland. Hiptsers and yuppies can stay away. We'll be just fine without them. The video makes me really miss summer. Nothing is better than summer in Minneapolis and this video captures this perfectly.
I love Bloomington Minnesota wouldn't replace it for another it's perfect⛄❄🌨❄❄❄currently moved two years ago
Perfect vacation for anyone who loves diversity , adventure and nature
This captures the overall vibe of the Twin Cities perfectly!
Same here, can't wait for this year to fly by.
I love Minnesota! I was there for 10 days and I just loved the new air of people and behaviour, quite a contrast to Miami Fl, I was in Minneapolis very briefly though, my stay was in Saint Cloud.
cool used to live there - miss it in the summer. Tina and the B-Sides.
Love it Great Vid!
I love u Minnesota no one is above u
I'd love to see you do another version of this video, but film it during the depths of winter. I wonder how different the responses would be....
Right?!!!
I never thought about it much. Watching this video wants me to go see Minneapolis
james dempster if you do, come in the warm months. :). In all honesty though, this is a wonderful place.
people from other parts of the Twin Cities area. To be blunt, I see people from the coasts that thought this was flyover country dropping in, loving it, and once again thinking that civilization only exists in their little hipster enclaves, just now including Como, Uptown, and the Warehouse district. Have they really learned to love the area, or just expanded their patronizing boundaries a teensy bit?
No other city is like this one. .. The best.... Can't wait for summer and the lakes
I'm from Denver and have never been to the Twin Cities. I really want to visit someday. Seems like a fantastic city.
ɷ I Haveeee Watcheddd Thissss Moviee Leakedddd Versionnnn Here : - t.co/NdLgwVlw7a
Way better than denver
I'm going on a spontaneous vacation from Iceland to Minneapolis alone, looking forward to it !
Geeze, I'm in school in Milwaukee now and this made me tear up, it makes me miss home so much!
I Love Minnesota! ;D
Minnesota is one of the best states to live in economically.
Lived in The Twin Cities suburbs in the eighties. At that time there were a lot of huge strip malls, with either all local stores or mom and pop stores.
Nice video, and nice plug on Fox 9 tonight.
Im coming home from deployment next Friday 10-05-2012. This video made me miss my home, I cant wait t go back to my city of St.Paul.
Thank you to who ever made this video!!!
I recently moved to Bloomington and I love it two years ago
You will love it here
Really enjoyed this!... its a shame Adam didn't show us this one in class.
I love Minneapolis it's like my second hometown :)
I've been living in Minnesota for about a year and a half and I must say it really depends on the person. Minnesota is a hard place to live, because this video is just showing one side of it (the smaller one) which is summer. Winter, on the other hand, lasts FOREVER. It's extremely cold most of the time and there's not too many things to do. I don't think it's a bad place to live, but it just isn't for me. So yeah... It depends if you like winter and are able to live through it every year. I like Cali way better, that's why I'm moving soon, but I'll always see MN as a learning experience :) (Don't ever say you prefer cold over heat if you've never been in MN) I did, and now... Oh well...
I live In MN And I personally Love the Cold. Thats why I moved here, Snowboard season is about 5 months long, Its always about 70 -80 from summer to November (which is my favorite weather), And the winters DO NOT feel cold at all. After living here for 7 and a half years, in the winter it can be -5 and I will put on a coat and go for a walk with my dog, or practice my snowboard skills in my yard with some PVC pipe, and not get cold at all. If you prefer a winter as Cozy blankets next a fire drinking hot Cocoa with your family or friends, thats what I see it as. And the summer is perfect weather everyday, which means you can go to the beach, go on a bike ride, or pretty much anything you want, so when you say theres not a lot to do I don't really understand that. And the best part is that you don't have to worry about sunscreen or bug screen, because I've never really encountered any of those things, and everyone is nice here. Theres no Yolo Douche bags here, and every one in our community's are very nice and kind. Si I don't know what you're talking about because Minnesota is an amazing place to live.
Well, it is for you. You said yourself you love the cold, but not everybody does, and that right there changes everything. That's your perception, and good for you if you like it here, but what I was saying is that it depends on the person. Personally I don't like it that much, and I've met many people who agree with me, as well as many others who do not. By the way, I don't think you will find many people who agree with you about the winters "not feeling cold at all", believe me... Like I said, it simply depends on the person. I don't hate it though; I just feel it's not for me, that's it :)
does that really matter?
Yeah it's mostly like that with any state in the Midwest. In Wisconsin we have very long winters as well. It starts getting nicer at the end of March and into April. But it doesn't really get too nice until May. June, July, and August are the main summer months and it gets very hot. In September it starts tapering off and getting cold again. From the end of September through March it's cold. I've been here all my life though so idk, it doesn't really bother me anymore. It used to when I was younger, but not so much anymore. Just be aware that if you move north, especially Midwest, the winters are long and can be pretty dreadful sometimes. It only really feels like summer for three months out of the year. March and April as well as September and October are transitionary. But still if you like a variety, you get it here. We have great summers, beautiful autumns, and thorough winters. :)
I love cold weather. I don't mind hot weather too, but I'm much more resistant to cold than heat
Oh come on Minneapolis! Let's be honest. We are #1 for most bars and most people getting shit faced... together:)
St. Paul is the most beautiful place to be at night. Driving over the Lafayette Bridge in the Springtime at night is incredible.
Oui c'est vrai que St Paul/Minneapolis c'est une belle région,j'avais passé des vacances là-bas et la nature autour de la ville est très belle,ça ressemble beaucoup à mon pays la France ;-)
Moved here in summer 2013 for work. Immediately I hated the place... for about 2 days. I started getting out more and getting to know the city and became slowly enamored. Coming from NYC, I liked that it had the feel of a city without being overwhelmingly huge, dirty, crowded, etc. Sure, the nightlife is not even close to that available in NYC or other major cities but there IS a nightlife, especially in Downtown and Uptown. I was under the impression that I had my last decent meal at a good restaurant when I left NYC (until I returned on visit) but, I was very wrong. Minneapolis is not lacking by any means in the gastronomic experience. I initially made the mistake of going for super value and living in South Minneapolis; I was enticed by the fact that you could get a huge 1BR for right around 900 a month or less, which was still 60% less than the price that I paid for my studio in NYC. I know live in the North Loop and, though the rent is higher, it is still very manageable by comparison to a similarly apportioned apt in a beautiful area of NYC. A similar apt in NY in a similar area of NYC (thing SoHo or West Village) would easily go for $ 4,000 or $ 5,000 per month... I pay a little over a quarter of that. Like my name says, I will always be a NYer... but I will be a New Yorker who lives in Minneapolis.
should have edited before I hit "Post"... I mean ..."I NOW live in the North Loop"... and "...(THINK SoHo or West Village).
NYer FaLife I plan to move here next year from los angeles, I 've been in cali the last 13 years but I misss home I grew up in wiona, mn, you really love it there
Muna Omar Thanks.... glad to be here!
Sequoia C. I can't say how you'll feel about it but I can tell you this: I've visited and lived in many, many cities throughout the world and I've always levitated back to NYC because I just found that, since most cities are the same... I'd rather be back home. This city is different and now I can't see myself living elsewhere... at least until retirement.
Yeah really sick of California, there's so many homeless people here and it's getting really expensive to live I know it's not as expensive as New York but still I miss Minnesota instead of going back to a small town I'd like to live in the city the reviews for rent in Minneapolis was great great economy the south is really nice area still debating
We'll be glad to have you! Welcome! :)
I love the Twin Cities. I live here and I hate the winters sometimes but the trick is to stay active during the winter months and not hibernate if, you want to make it :-) its so beautiful in the spring and summer and people are so friendly!
I moved to Minneapolis (Uptown) and it's pretty average in terms of food, fun, etc. I wasn't blown away, though the people were pretty nice. The winters...different story
I was raised up Minneapolis for the 5 years of my life, my parents went through a divorce and I moved to the UK with my parents, I want to settle in Twin Cities eventually. Eventually in a few years.
Minnesota is like the only state where during the winter you can go snowboarding or ski, and during the summer go outside play your fave sport, or go swimming, or just lay in the sun and tan I'm happy to say i live in Minnesota
BRAVO! I love this video. Love the people, the perspectives, the goofiness. Amazing.
I lived in Mpls from 1980-1990 when development squeezed the counterculture out. Uptown was cool until Calhoun Square moved in, the West Bank was real cool until it was invaded by Somalis, and downtown was cool until the Yuppies moved in. I would never recognize what is now called Minneapolis. While you bold folks of the north are wearing snowshoes, I'm surfing the waves of sunny California into the sunset until Christmas, when the temp gets as low as 31 degrees F. bbbbbbbboB
I'm from Maryland and now I live in Houston... and I would do ANYTHING to live in a place a nice as Minneapolis-St. Paul.
DAMN YOU!!! I live in Chicago now, which is a close second, but not quite as good as Minneapolis St. Paul and Minnesota. I will be back someday!
I love minnesota
Take up a Winter Sport. You'll love it. Minneapolis has so many outdoor activities...Summer or Winter.
Born and raised over here! Anyone else?
me,
I was born in Rochester
Yep live on the mpls side of the twin cities
Sauk Rapids, so St Cloud area
Broadway Ave/ NE Broadway St. is at 45 degrees north latitude, halfway between the equator and the north pole.
Maybe it's just because I've been to the cities more, but I like it there better than even places like NYC. Nothing wrong with NYC, MSP just seems more alive. and cleaner...
Nicely done video btw!
No mention or shots of the city lakes? Nice video. :)
I agree, the lakes are such a big part of what makes this city so unique. Nonetheless, great video!!
I live in Houston, Texas and it's okay. Some parts of the city may be ugly but that's every city. The summers are very hot but the winters are cool. Houston has a lot of diversity: from Mexican restaurants to Armenian restaurants. To me ,Houston is a great city to live in.
I plan on moving here next year ^_^
Did you ever move?
I was thinking of visiting the Twin Cities area. I looked up attractions and honestly, didn't find that much as far as museums are concerned. I think if I visit, I would have fun, but nothing would compare to Portland, OR, which I don't live in or Charleston, SC.
Well, there are many things that are not online, there are tons of restaurants to eat at, Museums such as the Art Museum, and I think there is a Russian Art one too.
Griffin I was in ATL instead, but was thinking of going to the twin cities for a mini vacation.
***** A Mini Vacation would be fun in the Twin Cities, I myself am thinking of going back there and also going to Chicago as well, just to make the trip more fun.
Griffin Chicago is great too. I'm assuming you live in the Midwest. You might want to try Atlanta. I was there and loved it and we found a very cheap flight/hotel package on travelocity, though ATL would be better in the fall or winter.
***** I have been to Atlanta, only once though. For about 45 minutes in the airport catching a flight to Tampa, Florida. I would love to go back and might go back in the Winter, (like you said) since I live in Minnesota and the weather can get as bad as -50 to -60 F. Anyways, I will check It out and maybe go there this winter or next. Thanks for the offer!
i live in Minnesota but up north
Without question...just the vibe. You can feel it & makes you want to stay there.
I dunno bout goin to San Francisco but I'd sure want to move to Minneapolis because my mom told me its actually great up there so yeah i should go to Minneapolis
This video definitely showcases why the Twin Cities is a fantastic place to live. #WhyMN #PowerOfVideo
Other places are fun to visit, but minneapolis is home.
I wish they had shown all four seasons, but I've heard nothing but good things about the TC's.
Winter is Coming! (Life long MN resident) I left for two years for Florida...and I'm glad I came back. Always plenty to do in Winter...you just have to bundle up sometimes. It's not all that bad really...I love it here. Give it a chance!
Beats sweating 11 months of the year don't it. Left Florida years ago because I got tired of sweating.
Bundle up for what smfh how am I gonna work all bundled up like fucking that kid from Christmas story
May it rains alot,June gets hot,July is really hot and August but the state Fair last is the week of August through labor day. one of the top state fairs in the country. there is over 300 places to eat and you wanna try everything once.the twin cities has alot to offer and there is alot to do but minnesota In general has alot to do and see.
I'm from mississippi and I'm thinking about going here
Do It!!!
Did you ever move?
@@DamnTheMan1 not yet
We came to the Twin Cities over fifty years ago and found it to be a nice place to live and work, but it was at a Guthrie performance of
"By the Skin of Our Teeth" that I knew that this was home. It has it unresolved problems--witness the death of George Floyd and the racism it revealed once again-- and it has its amazing cultural richness, religious exploration, social engagement and financial resources lthat makes it a great city.
Greatest city in the world too grow up in. Born & raised for 14 yrs
Screw "I
@kharazi666 That happens everywhere. It depends on the people you encounter. Your view of Minnesota can be completely different from anyone else and I respect that. I just want to stick up for my experience of it.
Great place for loners. Imagine, a city inside a frontier forest...
"Hey.""Yeah?""Do you ever wonder why we're here?"
Branson too.
I live in St. Paul
I traveled all over the US for business, and every time the plane landed I felt happy. Yes, we have crazy winters, but we have all four lovely seasons. TC is very diverse. Wish there were shots around town and during different seasons and events...farmers market on Nicollet Mall, NE neighborhood and Hennepin Ave block parties. St. Paul's St. Patrick day and Cinco de Mayo celebrations! All the various film festivals, fashion shows, amazing restaurants, and the list is endless. Visit Minnesota!
Video was great. Too many out-of-focus / in-focus / out-of-focus transitions on your B-roll footage. Once or twice would have been good, but I was struggling to make out what you wanted to show me.
Could you elaborate? I'm interested in this response.
That woman at 2:15 is a fucking goddess
Minneapolis in the lot like Pittsburgh. My city
DO IT...will never regret it.
I think i may have just found a place to settle down and start a family. this RN will be visiting soon
Damn...
What camera did you use?
