Love this lens! Great for travel and I’d say it’ll be the one lens I take with me on the Milford Sound Routeburn Track hike in New Zealand (when I’m able to get there of course!) ✈️🥾📸🤷♂️
I've been using the 24-120mm f/4 F mount lens on my D850 as a walk-around for years and love the images I get. The versatility of the 5-fold focal range is perfect. I don't understand why it was generally overlooked or shunned during the DSLR days for minor edge softness. I'm looking forward to getting the added benefits of IBIS and better autofocus for my current F lenses one day when I move to the Z line, but the new 24-120mm S lens will be one of the first of the S line that I consider purchasing. Thanks Adrian for another great video!
I took a bold decision and after much comparison and watching reviews of the 24 - 200 and the 24-120, I finally bought the 24-120 with a trade in to 24-70 kit lens. No regrets, just an awesome lens. I did some portrait shoot and the images were outstanding. This is the only lens I now require for my travels. I also have the 14-30 for my wide shots.
Hello Adrian: I just wanted to let you know that as a result of your review and those of several other folks here on YT, that I did buy the 24-120 f4 Z lens (just today 24 Sept 22). I am sure I will appreciate having it. Thanks for a thorough review.
Nice work Paul. I have really enjoyed having this lens in my bag. Very versatile for so many things and gives quality sharp images. Have a great weekend and enjoy your new lens.
Called it! 🤓✅👍🏻 Awesome choice and you did a really great job with the photos and video clips in todays video. Wow! We are in the parking lot at Ritch Grissom memorial wetlands at Viera. It’s raining so I finally got a chance to watch this video. 😂 Cheers from sunny Florida! 🌧
Hello Adrian: Just found this review and really enjoyed it. I am considering this lens after having tried it at B & H Photo in NYC. However, I am hesitant as late last year, I purchased the TAMRON 35-140 f2.8-4 for my F mount bodies (and before purchasing and receiving my Z9). As you mention here, and others have also made similar comments to me, they agree with you that this lens is probably the best "all-around, all day, walking around Z lens to leave on the front of one's camera body(ies)." However, in order to utilize the Tamron lens on the Z9, one must attach either the FTZ or FTZ II adapter and that adds some substantial weight and imbalance to the camera. Despite now owning a Z9, I have decided to retain my F mount film and DSLR bodies, so I will be keeping my F mount glass. So, retaining the Tamron 35-150 would mean there would be significant overlap in covered focal lengths and probably a duplication of capability across both the F mount and Z mount cameras.
Hello my friend looks like you got yourself a winner there. Videos and photos are outstanding, sharpness is amazing. Have a great weekend stay safe. 📷👏🙏🏼
Thanks very much for watching. Yes, this lens is truly beautiful. Nikon did well on this one and it's reasonably priced. Hope you have an amazing week ahead and take care, cheers 🙏📸
I find my “holy trinity” is the 14-30mm, 24-120mm, and the 100-400mm. It is much less expensive and much less weight than the f/2.8 lenses. Given the low noise of higher ISO settings, I find, for my work, I don’t need the f/2.8 speed.
Hey Adrian, I think I missed a few videos, glad you stuck with Nikon, I must say the footage of the birds and the Lizard are simply stunning, Nikon Australia should be giving you some gear! I shot Nikon since I was 16 but changed to Fuji a couple of years ago, I will be up grading to a better camera soon, lets just say that the upcoming Fuji cameras need to be top drawer or I can see me going with Nikon Z. Thanks for sharing mate and a happy new year.
Thanks heaps for watching John. I have to admit the new Z set up is pretty amazing. I'm planning on doing a lot more hiking this year out in the middle of nowhere. Being far way from people is a good thing at the moment due to you know what. These new Z lenses are superb. I'm looking forward to when some of their primes come out for bird photography (well my bank account won't be lol) Happy New Year mate, cheers and thanks again for the support 🙏📸
The customisable ring is very interesting! A very cool feature. This looks like a fantastic lens, the images you captured are great and as you said incredible sharp . I have to say I'm not a fan of spiders but that jumper spider image is really something! Enjoyed the video Adrian, taking notes in case I decide to change my setup in the future haha! Have a great day.
Thanks for watching Courtney. I can highly recommend this lens should ever switch to the Z gang. Have you ever thought about a Z5? Same res as D750 and Z6, full frame, yet very budget friendly. Great for video too and has the performance very close to the Z6 and 2 x SD card slots. Hope you have a great Sunday, cheers 🙏📸

Another great video Adrian and looks amazing Lens. As always plenty of info and tips. Great selection of photographs, specially the spider. Many thanks for sharing your work and stay safe :)
Have just listed my 24-70 F2.8 with the sole purpose of getting the 24-120. As much as I love the 2.8 version, I really can't justify having what amount to two near identical lenses so the extra reach and the lighter weight of the 24-120 has won out. Your review has only reinforced the views of so many others, reckon I'm making the right decision and won't be disappointed.
I can so relate to that last little ending of the walk bit . . . . . . Hahahah. I don't know how many times I've felt like it was a crawl to the car. Mind you the rocky steep slopes of kunany/Mt Wellington contribute to that as much as the weight of the gear on the back.
Wow! Amazing video and this lens certainly looks like the magic. So sharp and the video quality is fantastic. My favourite part was the dance at the end, I bet that's totally how it feels now with a kit that's so lightweight. Love it!
Thanks for watching. I never thought just how much the weight difference would make. I still love my D850 for birds and wildlife, but it's nice coming back to my car without my arms hanging out of their sockets and legs feeling like jelly. Enjoy your weekend 🙏📸
I recently bought this zoom lens and I’m really happy with it. With my d850 set up I usually carry the trinity lenses but now with my z6ii this one is enough for most of what I need. Excellent quality and build.
Good review thanks. I have just bought one as well and looking forward to using it! I also have the 14-30 and love that as well as the 50mm 1.8 which I am so impressed with
Hi Adrian, Got this beauty a week ago and I am absolutely delighted with the handling and performance. I knew it would be good but not this good, like you, it along with my 14-30 f4 is also my walking and Landscape perfect pair. It was a long wait after seeing it on the roadmap but well worth it, over here in Scotland they are flying off the dealer's shelves as they come in, Nikon has a winner.
Totally agree Douglas. Nikon made an amazing lens with this one. Everyone was expecting a 24-105mm so the 120mm was a pleasant surprise. Great price for such a good lens too. Hope you enjoy the new kit mate. Cheers and have a great weekend 🙏
Cheers Colin thanks very much for watching. I thought I was being a bit of fan boy in this vid, but it really is that good of a lens. I read other reviews too from other pro photo users and they gave it 5 stars. So at least I felt I wasn't the only one raving about it. Hope you're enjoying your weekend mate, take care 👍🙏
I have this lens which I got with the z8. How ever for me it’s a no go it’s massive so much that I’m returning it with the z8 which again is a big camera. Thanks
Awesome review mate. Great lens! How cute was that jumping spider?😀 Also the footage of those gorgeous lorikeets! 😍 Glad you’re not gonna have back issues with this lighter setup 😂😂
Thanks Peter. So many critters on that hike, loved photographing and getting video of them. This lens is just perfect for what I need it for. Glad I bought it. Have an awesome weekend mate, cheers 👍🙏📸
I got the 24-120 F4 with my D 750, and I was very pleased with it. Even with all the distortion and vignetting, it was a sharp lens , if you stopped down a bit, and it took great pictures. Very versatile range. I would love to see a comparison of the F mount vs the Z mount 24 120 F4.
Thanks for watching and the sub Chad. All the video clips shot handheld with slight pan motion. The skow mo helps a bit in the steadiness but the rest is from the Z7. Pretty cool. Cheers 🍻 🙏
Great review Adrian. I reckon that lens is the best walk around option for the Nikon Z by a mile. All their lenses are fantastic . .. you must be having a lot of fun with your kit mate.
Thanks Richard for watching. Great lens that's for sure. Be a popular seller for Nikon I think. Good value for the money and perfect for walking around as you say. Have a great week mate, cheers 🙏📸
Beautiful images! And, since this lens is on my list, (after the 100-400) it's quite gratifying to see what an excellent photographer can do with it. Take care!
It’s funny because the recent F-mount version of the 24-120 has been my go-to-and-walk-around lens on my D850 for years now. Have always thought this lens is better (certainly than its older versions) than it’s given credit for. I’ve never owned a 24-70 f2.8 and had thought that it might be my first lens when eventually adding a Zed camera. The generally strong feedback on this new one (your shots and video too) has me rethinking that strategy. Great video.
I am relatively new to your channel. But I quite like your practical approach to photography. And of course the awesome country that you live in New Zealand what a spectacular set of islands. We get caught up with gear and fail to see what we really need however I'm like you I'm looking to upgrade my system I'm still shooting with a Nikon d7100 I was thinking about upgrading to a d850 have been admiring that camera for years but I think I will go with the z7 Love to have the z9 but it's totally unpractical for me for the same reasons you went with the z7 I think I will go with it. I'm looking forward to seeing more of your videos keep up the good work. And somehow I got to find a way to get to New Zealand I live in Utah, USA. However Utah is not exactly a slouch of a place to take photographs we are a spectacular state for photography.
Hi Bryant and thanks very much for watching. I actually live in Australia, but New Zealand is what I call my second home as I do regularly visit there, it's one of the most beautiful countries on Earth, especially the south island. I'm enjoying this Z7, I still have my D850 for other types of photography, but for hiking the weight difference is notable. That's what my back and legs tell me anyway lol. Welcome to the channel and I hope you have a great weekend. 🙏👍
Excellent video Adrian and loved those dance moves at the end there ;) I honestly had not considered this lens as I wasn't that impressed the F-mount version of this but this looks like a fantastic travel lens (assuming we can all do a bit more of that in the future. I might have to pick this one up and leave my 70-200 at home ;) Thanks for posting!
I think this lens is all you ever need Rob. Maybe sell off the 70-200, grab this one and with the money left over put it towards the new 100-400mm for wildlife etc Hope you've had a great start to the week 🙏📸.
Hi Adrian, a great video, buddy! This looks after a great lens. It is difficult: In the one hand we want to get the best possible image quality, in the other hand we want to get the weight as low as possible to be able to hike long or high. I think this lens might be a nice compromise between both, what is fantastic as "always on lens". Thank you for sharing and nice greetings, Christian
Thanks for watching Christian. It is definitely a "one and done" lens. Great for those long hikes or just a lens you can walk around with all day on your camera. I'm planning on doing a lot of hikes this year, so this lens is perfect for me. Hope you have a fantastic weekend my friend 👍🙏📸
Incredible lens and review! I currently use my Nikon Z6II with my Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f/2.8G ED Lens, this combination is still heavy. Thanks to your review, I'll buy the new Nikon Z 24-120mm F4 S and replace it. Watching you here in São Paulo, Brazil. Kind regards!
The most amazing lens that nobody can buy as it’s never been in stock ! By the time it becomes available to most photographers, the lens will be almost 2 years old !
Not even sure where you live? We have a tonne of em here in Australia. These guys have in stock... www.digidirect.com.au/nikon-nikkor-z-24-120mm-f-4-s-142808
Nice review Adrian, seems like Nikon hit it out of the park with that lens. I have a Tamron 24-70 F2.8 for my D850 and the pair is HEAVY. Can you compare what the Z7II and 24-120 weigh compared to something like mine?
Thanks for watching Leo. I’d equate the weight difference to something like carrying an extra lens. It’s not massive but those who hike will know that after walking straight for 4 hours every extra gram or ounce of weight on your back feels like a tonne. I’ll just be using this lens alone with the Z7 when going up mountains etc. Have a great weekend Leo cheers 🍻 👍🙏
Thanks for watching. The Z6 has inbuilt VR which you turn on from inside the camera. The lens itself has no VR and relies on the camera VR. In other words no you won’t miss the image stabilizing
thanks for your answer, the way to activate it is going to Menu and finding Vibration Reduction? If so, I see 2 modes: normal and sport, do you know the differences between both of them?@@adrianalfordphotography
Thanks for watching. So this is a Z mount lens and works on Z cameras not D850. Is that correct in answering your question? It is much lighter than than D850 and 24-120mm F mount version yes.
Nice review Adrian. I thought about this lens and for the reason of the constant f/4 aperture but I went a different route and chose the 24-200 lens to pair with my 14-30 on my Z6ii. The 24-120 looks super tho. It was a hard decision.
Thanks for watching Ron. Yes, I thought about the 24-200mm too. But this lens came out before I had bought the 24-200, so went with the constant F4 instead with the less zoom range as a trade off. Really is a nice lens for me, as I do a lot of stuff close up when hiking. Cheers 🙏
Hey Adrian, just stumbled across your channel and subscribed. Did you have to wait long to get your 24-120mm lens? I've been looking around the local stores and most of them are sold out and waiting for stock.
Thanks for watching and subbing Phil. I thought this lens would go out of stock pretty quickly. Definitely the best value S lens Nikon have at the moment. It took about a month for my lens to get to me. But the lens hadn't even been released when I pre-ordered. I think the Z9's got snapped up too quickly in pre-order and people are now waiting again for the next batch to be shipped. Best chat to camera stores and they'd have a better idea re lens wait time. I just made sure I bought mine from a Nikon authorised seller to get the full 2 year warranty and they seemed to be the stores that get the stock first. Cheers
I'm debating whether to replace my Z 24-200 with this lens (which has been a pleasant surprise). Wondering if the reduction in range is justified with increased image quality and constant F4? Hmmmm. I also pair with the 14-30 F4 and 2 lenses can cover just about all landscape shooting situations!
Hard decision Chris. If you're happy with the images from the 24-200mm I wouldn't see any reason why to switch. I hung off buying the 24-200mm to check this lens out and I'm glad I did. Really versatile and having a 77mm filter thread I can use all my current filters I had for my old my older F mount lenses. Have a great weekend and take care 🙏
Looks like a great lens mate. When you have a lens that covers all eventualities and its lightweight as well you are onto a winner. Certainly means there's no excuse never to have your camera with you👍 Have a great week!
Thanks for watching Scott. I think this will be a hot seller for Nikon. So versatile. I've used it a couple of times since this video and like it more and more. Have an awesome week mate, cheers 🙏📸
Great video Adrian! My first thought is that I love that extra ring on the lens that you can assign to different functions! What a useful feature that is! I struggle with what to do when traveling, do I take everything I own to make sure I have just the right lens for any situation I am in, or do I want something that is super versatile to cut down on the weight? having said that, gorgeous video and images from this lens makes this a lens not to be left at home when you travel! Fantastic look at this lens! Hope you are doing well, keeping safe, and having a great weekend!
Thanks so much for watching Paul. I’ve heard such good things about the Tamron lenses for Sony. But those GM’s are something else. I guess for a similar Sony set up I’d go the Tamron 17-28 F2.8 with the new release Tamron 35-150 F2-2.8 (I heard rave reviews about that lens). All good here mate (touch wood) great time to stay out in the open doors doing landscape photography away from people 🤙🙏 Take care.
Thanks for watching. I guess unless you really need 2.8 for whatever reason then maybe. But I’d prefer the wider and closer focal lengths of 24 and 120mm. F4 is good enough for me. 👍🙏
@@adrianalfordphotography makes sense I will decide after the 28-75mm reviews come out. I do have both ranges covered for the most part with primes already so I'll see. Thanks for the awesome video! 👍
I have to say even though I own faster lenses like the 24-70 2.8 and the 50mm, I really love the new Z 24-120. I was a bit hesitant to get it though because I had the F-mount VR version, which had some issues (just with the design, not that specific copy) and so naturally I hesitated to get the new Z version, but glad I did. While the 24-70 2.8 is great, it's a bit heavy (front end heavy too) especially on the smaller Z bodies (Z5/Z6/Z7) and its zoom range is obviously limited. But the 24-120 offers great balance between size, weight, and optics. Of course the 24-70 wins pretty much in terms of sharpness and speed, but loses in terms of size and weight (and cost, being it's about 2x as much as the 24-120). So now the 24-120 has become my new walkaround lens and I even went to the extend of just selling the 24-200 (as the 24-120 wasn't out when I bought that lens) so really it has become a valuable lens in my bag. Pair this with say a 14-30 and you have a great 2-lens kit that could be used for travel (although 120mm is a bit short, so you might want to add a 70-300 perhaps) but for general casual shooting the 24-120 with or without a wide angle is a great option. I just like how I can go from 24-120 in a single lens now and not really suffer optically too much (the 24-200 had the variable aperature and by about 85mm you were already around f/5 or f/5.6 although it did have VR which was a plus, but I think 120mm is still short enough that IBIS can still stabilize the lens reasonably well so it's not necessary although I would have liked to have it regardless, even if it meant adding another $150-$200 to the price).
The 24-120mm is slightly sharper in image quality, better build and the most important it has F4 right through the zoom range as I mentioned in this video. Very good all round lens.
When last we caught and had a chat, I guessed it would be the 24-200. Oh well only out by 80mm! Keen to check out the 14-30 though next time I see you! I think that it might be going on my wish list.
Thanks Chris for watching. Yeah the 14-30mm is a ripper. So light weight and puts out beautiful pics. Combined with this lens I think it's all I'll ever need but next week's video will show what I'm doing when I need past that 120mm focal length. Have a great Sunday mate, cheers 🙏
Love this lens! Great for travel and I’d say it’ll be the one lens I take with me on the Milford Sound Routeburn Track hike in New Zealand (when I’m able to get there of course!) ✈️🥾📸🤷♂️

Thank you for this review. I think, when i am going for Nikon Z,
I will do it with the 14-30 and the 24 to 120mm
I've just purchased the Z24-120 4FS lens.....played with it a little took some great photos. Without a doubt this is my go to lens.
You just sold me on this lens to pair with the z7ii and the 14-30mm - beautiful photos and videos! Got yourself another subscriber too!
Thanks for watching and subscribing Kai, welcome 🙏
A GREAT Video! I'll try it on my Z 9 I do hear it has an a shallow depth of field!

Thanks for watching, glad you liked the vid. You won't regret getting this lens, it's good for so many things. Have a great weekend, cheers 👍🙏📸
Always look forward to your weekly posts, so enjoyable and informative. [thank you). Your drama acting not quite there to win an Oscar yet!

I read other reviews too from other pro photo users and they gave it 5 stars. So at least I felt I wasn't the only one raving about it. Hope you're enjoying your weekend mate, take care 👍🙏
That lens has me thinking, I bought the 24-200 when it came out, but I wish I had waited for this one. Enjoy your videos
Thanks for watching Steve. It’s a pretty awesome lens for everything. I use it regularly now just as a general walk around lens. Have a great week 📸🙏
I have this lens which I got with the z8. How ever for me it’s a no go it’s massive so much that I’m returning it with the z8 which again is a big camera. Thanks
Amazing lens! I found your blog and added it to my feed:-)
Awesome, thank you!
Thanks for watching Luke. I’d love to do a comparison but I don’t have the F mount version. I’ll look into it 👍🙏
Wonderful overview, thanks! For your video clips, did you use a gimble / Digital stabilization? Great content, sub'd!
Take care!
Thanks Mike. Appreciate you watching 🙏
Thanks for watching Marcus. I can definitely recommend this lens. For the price especially, it’s very good 👍
I am relatively new to your channel.
Thank you for sharing and nice greetings,
Christian
Thanks for watching. I have another review of this lens coming out in another week. One year of use review 🤙🙏
@@adrianalfordphotography thank you! Merry Christmas to you and your family!
@@user-ml8tm5bi4e Same to you, Merry Christmas.
I bought the Nikon Z 24-200 the year before and like it so much, but look like this is in another level?
It’s such a versatile lens. Definitely a one and done for the Z series cameras. Thanks for watching 👍🙏
Great review as always....Thank you
Many thanks for watching Tony, much appreciated. Enjoy your week 🙏
Awesome video thanks ❤️🙌
Thanks for watching 🙏
Great video. Looks like a good option for both video and stills. 👍🏻
Thank you for watching and yes I would agree, excellent for stills and video. Cheers 🙏
Great video! just a question, with my Z6 will I miss the image stabilization of this lens? Thanks.
If so, I see 2 modes: normal and sport, do you know the differences between both of them?@@adrianalfordphotography
just go with normal, I never use sport@@chiscochacon
perfect, thanks! @@adrianalfordphotography
Great review. Love this lens
Thanks for watching and yes this lens is magic. Cheers 🙏
Thanks for the review,. I own this lens recently and as you said it's very versatile and light with my Z6ii instead of my D850
Thanks for watching. So this is a Z mount lens and works on Z cameras not D850. Is that correct in answering your question? It is much lighter than than D850 and 24-120mm F mount version yes.
@@adrianalfordphotography I know it doesn't fit on my D850. Waiting now for a Z8 45mp to go all mirrorless. 😊
Cheers 🙏
@@adrianalfordphotography BTW, love how you present your reviews actually out in the field shooting instead of inside. Refreshing 👍
Thanks Ron. Much appreciated 🙏
That D850 vs Z7 set up comparison gets you a sub 😂 Nice review, thanks. Really looking at this lens when I buy into the Z-system later this year.
Many thanks for watching and the sub, much appreciated 🙏
I really like my 14-120mm Z lens that came as a kit with my Z6ii.
Thanks for watching 📸🙏
Cheers
Would you recommend it for sports photography? Specifically 3x3 basketball? (it's only a 1/2 court game)
no
I'm debating whether to replace my Z 24-200 with this lens (which has been a pleasant surprise).
I have this lens on my Z8, it is indeed very good.
Great video.
Thanks for watching 🙏
amazing videos!
I was going to snag the 28-75mm 2.8 Z lens you've given me pause to think about it now though 🤔
Great vid
Thank you for watching David 🙏
Adrrian~ Thanks~amazing - see you on my side.
Thanks for watching 🙏
Would you choose this over the 28-75 for portraits and events?
For pro portraits I’d be using primes or a 2.8 - for casual portraits or events I’d use this lens no problem.
Hello, how would you compare this to the Z 24-200? Thanks :)
The 24-120mm is slightly sharper in image quality, better build and the most important it has F4 right through the zoom range as I mentioned in this video. Very good all round lens.
Is IBIS in the Z7 and Z6 5 axis or 3 axis. I thought in body IS was 3 axis and the other 2 axes come from VR lenses
Tony. Do you have Google?
@@adrianalfordphotography yes
2:47 Why do you need to check the focus on landscapes shots? Why not just focus to infinity since the subject is the background?
You do realise not all landscape shots have to be focused at infinity right?
When last we caught and had a chat, I guessed it would be the 24-200. Oh well only out by 80mm!
Keen to check out the 14-30 though next time I see you! I think that it might be going on my wish list.
Thanks Chris for watching. Yeah the 14-30mm is a ripper. So light weight and puts out beautiful pics. Combined with this lens I think it's all I'll ever need but next week's video will show what I'm doing when I need past that 120mm focal length. Have a great Sunday mate, cheers 🙏
This lens is always out of stock...I can't find any on the market
Thanks for watching 🙏 it’s a very popular lens.
