Before Heung Min Son was the face of South Korean football, Ji Sung Park was the man. Ji Sung Park was fantastic for Manchester United and even took Pirlo out of the game every time when Milan faced us. The few average players I truly rate. Him alongside Fletcher and O'Shea were the unsung heroes of Manchester United's success in the last 2000s and early 2010s.
Please have a look at Bum Kun Cha. He was 'the' South Korean Exotic, like Yasuhiko Okudera, from Japan, start till Middle of the 80s here in the Bundesliga. He played for Frankfurt and Leverkusen. Hope I might not be wrong, but I think he was at least around 180 Games and 90 Goals. And before Erling Haaland? We had Joern Andersen. At least one time the golden boot in Germany till around the 90s. Later Manager. Wynton Rufer was New Zealand. Long time captain for Werder Bremen, still Nr 2 of the History Table all time behind Bayern here. Back then you were only allowed three Foreigners. So most times it would have been a boy from Europe. Seldom a complete Foreigner. It is like a rare treasure. Even 2 Wales boys ( Wayne and Dean Thomas), Scot ( Vincent Mennie), a Finn and a Islandic even a year at Bayern each ( Pasi Rautiainen and Asgeir Sigurvinsson). Sorry! Have a look in your preferred league! In England has been a Goalkeeper from Oman recently. He must have around 200 games in Prem or Championship to his Belt!
@@horscanigunger5098 As a korean, i watched a lot on Cha Bum Kun. Yes, he is the first Korean superstar in the footballing world. However, he wasn't considered that much of a hero during his time as a player within korea like Park and Son were. He is now held in the same regard as those two but due to the political nature and mindset south korea had at the time, it meant that he wasn't considered to be the face of south korean football in korea. South korea were conservative and actually considered sending him to another country to play football as losing a national treasure and tried everything to not send him. This perception changed by the time it was park and when park joined man utd, he was considered a national hero for going there. Park was the face of south korean football, revered by the fans back in his homeland. Cha, whilst he did experience it to some degree, was not able to get this warm reception from korea at the time. I kid you not, Ji Sung Park was one of my MAIN players back in the day in real Life and on FIFA 2k games. This brought a tear to my soul. Wishing Park all the best in life
Park could play in any outfield position and do a consistent job at it. Put him as a full-back and he will tirelessly follow the winger. Put him as a forward and he will clutch a goal. Put him in midfield and he will run everywhere. Possibly one of the most underrated players of all time, and truly a player that the streets will never forget.
Small in stature but a three in one footballer. Park was indeed the jewel in the crown in Sir Alexi's ManU. This video is a befitting tribute to his great contributions.
Park is a textbook box to box midfielder and would probably walk into most teams even in today's football systems. Hell, he'd walk over most of Man U's current players.
@@siberianTiger639 He was actually a central midfielder but Hiddink was the first one who started using him as a winger, which is why he had good tackling and defensive awareness for a winger. Heard this recently in an interview with his Japanese teammates back in the day, and they said he started really performing well after that.
@@thefreed first time I'm hearing that. He was a winger every time I watched him both at PSV and United. Literally never seen him playing centrally for one time. Of course sometimes he would mark opponent central midfielders defensively, but going forward he was a winger. Although I could definitely imagine him in central areas looking at his technical quality, being good in tigjt spaces, good passing and link up, general intelligence.
Park is without a doubt the most hardworking and dedicated player. Coming from all those injuries shows the level of dedication he brought to the pitch.
In a round about way, Park is the player who made me realise just *how* good Messi is/was. 2011 champions league final, Sir Alex Ferguson's tactic was understandably to have Park, their fittest most tenacious player, man marking Messi, following him everywhere for 90 minutes. Watch Messi's goal in that game, as Messi pops into that pocket of space to receive the ball from iniesta, park can barely run, he is exhausted, pointing at someone else to go and tackle. It was at that moment that I realised. Not only do we have arguably the greatest passer ever, arguably the greatest dribbler ever, arguably the greatest goalscorer ever.. but he's just outrun and outpaced one of the fittest players I've ever seen Park was a legend, united need a player like him right now. Very underrated and did an amazingly tenacious job.
man talking like a typical pundit with no ball knowledge, messi walks around when they dont have the ball, he does zero defense. defending is 10x more tiring than attacking. this is the dumbest analogy ive seen in a while.
@@justahyundai Yeah, when I think about it, it's not a great statement. Outrunning someone who spent most of their time running while you just walk around on defense doesn't make you better physically; the other person is just tired. 😅
Messi was strolling all game mate, he did not outrun a single player in that game. Other things may ring true, but Messi and his work rate are not really well known to each other
Gotta say, this was a brilliant bit of storytelling. Definitely touched on the emotion that makes sports so special, even got a couple happy tears from someone that had never heard of this guy before.
His mentality pushed him through unbelievable obstacles; You can have all talent in world but without that determination your destined to fail. Great vid as always!
South Korean superstar Park Ji Sung boss was one of the best respective players to ever grace the European football with PSV Eindhoven and his standout career with Manchester United, good friends!!!He will be remembered as one of the best respective upcoming legends and long live to him, good friends!!!:-D
I had two friends like this in high school, one went on to run cross country in college which made all the sense in the world. Both of them played RM and LM so the opponents wingers were ran absolutely ragged. These two never stopped, sprinted up for attacks and sprinted back to defend
Rm,lm,rw,lw,cm,cam, cdm. He could do everything he was absolutely a beast, technically gifted, committed, absolute champion. The 3 lungs was just a cherry on the top.
Ji-Seong Park, the previous Wing forward of Manchester United & the South Korean national football team member used to say that he tried his best to make his team a winning team, so he had to run again and again like he had three lungs at the time. He was a normal human but he had an iron will to make his team a champion in the league. Although he retired too early at a relatively young age of some serious wounded, he could find another hope in his football career. He found the promising younger football player, a junior member of the Korean national football team, Heung-Min Son, Sonny about 12 years ago. Thus, he could say that he didn't make an amazing achievement but Sonny would create more incredible records as a professional player in the EPL. Nowadays, he has been working for a South Korean football club as a technical director.
As a United fan, thank you for making this video. You summarize his contribution wonderfully. heck he was so good that i always have this preconceived image of never say die attitude, selfless, energetic yet technically sound in almost every facet of the game everytime i see a south korean players.😂

One more incredible fact about Park is that he achieved all of his career even though he is flat-footed. It is really depressing because many Koreans think that being flat footed caused a knee injury, which made it hard for him to keep playing for Man Utd.
Hate United, but remember this player. Some players win your respect, even when they play opposite to your team. Park Ji Sung, greatest Korea has ever produced?!
Park used to keep Scholes on the bench in the big games and Zidane and Xavi are quoted as saying "We've never said anything so stop making stuff up about us"

He would have been held in much higher regard in the modern day. With the need for stamina being really huge, he would have stood out and, like kante, would have been a much more recognised player rather than an unsung hero.
I wrote one, but I have to write another post, because this video doesn't do justice to Park as a footballer at all. Park was quite a technical/skilled player. Not as skilled as Ronaldo, Rooney, Tevez, Nani etc, but still very skilled. But what made him so special is that he was always ready to put himself aside and to do whatever the team/manager asks him, needs him to do. Many players of his talent would probably be unhappy to play a squad role, even United. I'd say United fans were very lucky to have a guy like him being in and out of the team but always ready to perform on top level when they need him. Describing him as a player, I lile to use Nani... Nani was much more skilled and individually more talented, but what made Park more dangerous, even in the attacking sense alone, is that he was much more intelligent, a much better team player, knew how to exploit spaces and positon himself, had great link up etc. Unlike Nani who mostly just loved to display his individual skills, dribble etc, but couldn't work with the team on that level. That's why even in Nani's best season (2010/11), where he had most assists in the league I think, it was Park and Valencia who played on the wings in the starting XI in all the knockout games in the CL (including the final), no matter how good Nani was. Again, Park was very equipped individually, but what made him special and gave him the edge is that he was such a great team player and so intelligent AND hardworking (not only that as the video mostly shows), and that made him so valuable, especially in the big games, where you needed much more than skills to hurt the opponent.
Always thought he was a very talented squad player. Never realized he was this great & left that much of a mark on opposing midfielders. Amazing what he did with Pirlo. But if they would do that for Pirlo, why tf would Alex let Messi go free?!
The most underrated midfielder off the 2000s unless your a untied fan we know just how good he’s was a true honest hardworking player he give he’s all on the pitch every game
Yeah but Park was a lot ahead of them in tecnique, passing, shooting and could play on every positions except CF and CB.He was one of the most versatile player ever.
@@hughtube5154 Indeed. But neither of those would also man mark the opponents DLP when required (not unusual for Ferguson to try and take out players like Vieira, Pirlo and Busquets)
a note should be added: His contract was over when he played in the finals of Emperor's Cup in Japan. He palyed for FREE. He already made his contract with PSV before the Cup finals. + He got offers from 3 different clubs in Japan when he got booed by PSV fans. But he stayed and made his successful career.
Hiddink didn't just stick park in after robben left hoping for the best. Park wanted to go back. Hiddink approached him and told him that there were offers for him from japan. Hiddink then told him that he may leave if he wants but he wanted park to stay. Park decided to stay and became good. It really helps when you know the manager has trust in you

There's a reason why his biggest controversies during his career were poor performances, lack of game time, and not being selected for a champions league final game. In fact, his only non-football related "scandal" i have ever hewrd about was a dating "scandal" with the woman who is his wife now. He's my favourite player of all time and i'm a korean too so coming across his news was not hard at all
United was really lucky to have such a proper player in Park...it's impressive that despite his many years away, the United fans clearly still have a lot of respect for him.
Long time captain for Werder Bremen, still
Nr 2 of the History Table all time behind Bayern here.
Back then you were only allowed three Foreigners. So most times it would have been a boy from Europe.
Seldom a complete Foreigner.
It is like a rare treasure. Even 2 Wales boys ( Wayne and Dean Thomas),
Scot ( Vincent Mennie), a Finn and a Islandic even a year at Bayern each ( Pasi Rautiainen and Asgeir Sigurvinsson).
Now, though, he is rightfully held in the high regard he deserves and in korea, people will ask "Cha, Park, Son?" and the question literally means "which of these three do you think is the greatest korean footballer of all time?"
@@justsomedude759that’s because he took a long hiatus from the national team almost ten years and when he did play they struggled to get out of the groups that’s why he’s not celebrated as much compared to being in Germany.
Ahn Jung Hwan?
@limerickkurniawan8724 he was good but didn't reach the heights that cha bum kun, park ji sung, or son heung min reached. Cha bum kun is considered a bundesliga legend, park is a premier league legend and the most decorated asian footballer of all time and son is considered a world class forward and would have won many trophies had he not played for spurs. Imo, ahn had that potential but due to issues in his career had a possible good european career taken away from him.
Dude, I just wanna say, thank you for your channel, you're a true football aficionado, I appreciate the hard work
thanks man!
Sir Alex did him dirty 😳 by not even putting him on the bench (UCL Final) ..What a baller. The streets will NEVER forget him 💯
Sir Alex also said it was one of the biggest mistakes he made of his managerial career.
In 2011?
@@hitmonchan52 he was starter but they still lose by the same team. I mean i can blame them since they faced prime Barca, one of the greatest team in football history. Plus they don't have Ronaldo anymore.
this is where the saying comes from... "offense wins games, defense wins championships"... when you have a player than can run all day, that's an advantage that can't be trained for.
He was way too into ronaldo to see what Park was capable of.

One of the very few players that would fit in any system. He'd be able to start for any team from the past, the present and the future.
he’s a legend. Truly blessed my childhood time watching united plays
Every time he says “ Listen to this. “ I always listen because this stories are extremely interesting.
Ji-Sung Park was such a big influence in Football for Koreans that he's often called the "father of overseas football (해외 축구 아버지)" in Korea!
Park is a textbook box to box midfielder and would probably walk into most teams even in today's football systems. Hell, he'd walk over most of Man U's current players.
He wasn't a box to box midfielder😂
He was a winger. You obviously never watched him in your life.
@@siberianTiger639 He was actually a central midfielder but Hiddink was the first one who started using him as a winger, which is why he had good tackling and defensive awareness for a winger. Heard this recently in an interview with his Japanese teammates back in the day, and they said he started really performing well after that.
with just one of his lungs - too easy
He would be noticed even more in todays game, with the modern pressing football. He is every managers dream player

Not only do we have arguably the greatest passer ever, arguably the greatest dribbler ever, arguably the greatest goalscorer ever.. but he's just outrun and outpaced one of the fittest players I've ever seen
Park was a legend, united need a player like him right now. Very underrated and did an amazingly tenacious job.
top comment
To be fair, it takes a lot less energy to be chased than it does to chase someone. That being said, I do agree.
man talking like a typical pundit with no ball knowledge, messi walks around when they dont have the ball, he does zero defense. defending is 10x more tiring than attacking. this is the dumbest analogy ive seen in a while.
Definitely touched on the emotion that makes sports so special, even got a couple happy tears from someone that had never heard of this guy before.
he never gave up when his team gave up, what an amazing player he was.

South Korean superstar Park Ji Sung boss was one of the best respective players to ever grace the European football with PSV Eindhoven and his standout career with Manchester United, good friends!!!He will be remembered as one of the best respective upcoming legends and long live to him, good friends!!!:-D
Thank you for covering Park! I grew up watching him play and am really delighted to see youtubers and players who worked with him praising Park!
Ji sung park will always be a Man United legend.
Thank you for a wonderfully produced and written testimonial video of an amazing player that all Utd fans loved.
Park is loved by us United fans, what we call in England, a proper player.
Really? Is that why your fans made a racist chant about him and his country? Just another example of English arrogance and delusion.
Park is one of those players most of us know and love but sometimes just forget about, really nice to see him in action after a long time
Thanks for making this video! You are smart and you explained so well about Ji-sung Park !

What an inspirational story. These videos really make you relive these amazing moments.
As a South Korean, so glad you made this video! I will share it with my friends here!
Players like Park comes up once in a life time
One more incredible fact about Park is that he achieved all of his career even though he is flat-footed. It is really depressing because many Koreans think that being flat footed caused a knee injury, which made it hard for him to keep playing for Man Utd.
"The first nuclear powered footballer" is crazy😂
Pure class from Pirlo
You sir, made the game soccer/football exciting to watch for the first time in my life. Great commentary and editing!
Hate United, but remember this player. Some players win your respect, even when they play opposite to your team. Park Ji Sung, greatest Korea has ever produced?!
I really wanna cry... I loved him so much.. He was my number one on PlayStation.. He just had to be on the team before anyone else
Park used to keep Scholes on the bench in the big games and Zidane and Xavi are quoted as saying "We've never said anything so stop making stuff up about us"
absolutely fascinating. thank you so much for another excellent history lesson. i'd never heard of park but i am now a huge fan. the quote about park sticking to pirlo so well that he probably expected to see his face when he woke up the next day is one of the funniest things i've heard in a long time.

Now I'm thinking he wasn't really an orthodox winger. With his versatility, I think he can thrive even more in the modern-day system.
He would have been held in much higher regard in the modern day. With the need for stamina being really huge, he would have stood out and, like kante, would have been a much more recognised player rather than an unsung hero.

This is my new inspiration video - King Park
