OMG, I have the greyed off Wi-Fi button. Did exactly Hypertux suggested in the video. Hairdryer to heat up my iphone 4s (the over heating message did not come on) until it is quite hot to touch, switch off the phone and then in the freezer for ten minutes. Took it out of freezer, turn the phone on and I can't believe it, the Wi-Fi button can now be switched on and off! Hypertux, you have saved me a lot of aggravations and expense. Thank you, Thank you!

This actually worked! I've been researching this for days and finally came across your video. I was at my wits end so I decided to give it a try. I can't believe it worked! Thank you so much for taking the time to make a video and put it up for everyone to use.
    I really appreciate it!

This did work for me with two caveats, the first of which is very important.
    1. Although I had the hair drier aimed at the top of the phone for at least 10 minutes, the OVERHEAT WARNING NEVER APPEARED. The phone was so hot I could barely tolerate holing it for the 3 seconds it took to power it off. The wooden counter upon which it had been sitting was also too hot to touch. I don't know at what point an iPhone 4S melts, but I was darn sure hoping not to find out with my phone! (Many years ago using an iPhone 3 as a GPS I received the heat warning, so I am familiar with it.) The lesson here is use a little common sense with the heat.
    2. Immediately after turning the phone back on (after 15 minute cool-down in the fridge) I went to settings and reset the network settings. It is worth noting that I tried this 3 times BEFORE I tried the heat process, so I know it was not that alone that did the trick. Nonetheless, if you are having this problem I would suggest trying the reset first before subjecting your phone to excessive heat., because it is obviously less risky.

Hello! It worked like charm!!! I bought two screwdrivers the pentalobe and plus one, even the wi-fi antenna itself. Replaced it with new antenna, no result, put back the original, then I started yours, I would like to advise as follows:
    1. Open up the back plate, take out the antenna which is just about 1 minute job, be patient in doing this, no rush that may bring up more issue to other parts. Try to make your fingers as soft as possible.
    2. Put a soft tissue/napkin paper to cover the other parts of phone, especially the battery, and parts with black soft rubber and kinda.
    3. Only the area where the wi-fi antenna sits on, as the wifi IC chip module lays underneath the wi-fi antenna. Put your phone into sleep mode.
    4. Now "hairdressing" on to this spot of wi-fi module area don't heat up other parts, minimize risk of heating up unnecessarily other parts that hot air may strip the rubber tapes or whatever melting could be possibly too.
    5. I needed about 30 seconds only to get the over heat message onto the screen, wake up the phone...message appeared.
    6. Just turn off the phone, need not freeze it, physically transferring between hot and deeply cool temperature may harm the other parts too, think about it, this is not bi-metal pieces.
    7. Turn the phone ON and its wi-fi too....and OPSSSS! As you wish the baby wi-fi smiles to you.
    8. I tried all the way down...U Tube, up and down, downloading, etc. It is there..
    Thanks anyway....

One thing to note, watch out for any screen cover and don't let the hairdryer get too hot next to it. It temporarily made that corner of the screen go black.

worked like a charm !!! :D i want to make some points though. 1. don't do that on the screen it self ! it will make your screen color turn into black ! but it will cool down and get back to its first state so no worries if it did happened ! 2. focus on the top at most even make it all over the phone just to warm it up. 3. you don't have to make the temperature meter appear, its enough to warm it up for 2 minutes without that message appears and just turn it off and turn it back on ! 4. use something to block any explosion that may happened, was sure jam gonna blow the battery after the first minute, so do it safely ! put gloves and cover your eyes just in case lean your hair drier on standing book or any object hard enough to cover you from hurting yourself and focus again as i already said on the top front speaker , NOT the back Battery !! thanks dude for helping !

  • @MothproofKT

Was really skeptical about doing this, purposely overheating my phone with a hair dryer...but it worked! My phone got so hot the metal was burning my fingers before it said it had overheated, so turned it off at that point and put it in the fridge, 20mins later and it worked perfectly. No regrets, and an easier fix than sending it off to be repaired! Always back your phone up first, just to be safe!

Thank you SO MUCH!!!!!! IT WORKED, to be honest, when I first watched this video I thought it was a bit sketchy, so I asked my sister (who majors in technology) and she said she was not sure if this was going to work and that i should try a few safer methods, and if they don't work, just try this one because my phone is like 4 1/2 years old, and was used when I bought it, and I could just buy a new one if it breaks, I tried ALL OF THE OTHER METHODS DO NOT WORK!!!! I TRIED ALL OF THEM!!!! Then I just said YOLO and did this method, and I was surprised to say that it worked! Thank you so much, and I would also like to thank the other commenters (you guys gave me the motivation to actually try this method)

I am a travel blogger, my wifi died suddenly, I took it to the apple store and they told me I needed a new phone. I use my phone for wifi only, not any cell service. I came home and tried this. I held that hair dryer on the phone for 25 minutes! Finally I got the temp error. I threw the phone in a freezer bag and left it in the freezer for an hour. When I turned the phone back on I had WIFI. I have clue how this works, but damn glad it did. Ill report back to see if this "fix" lasts! Amazing! Congrats to you my man! Thanks from Jays Odyssey for saving me from buying a whole new phone! To the negative ninnys go f#$% yourself UNTIL you try it for your self!

  • @LuketheDukee

*Before you do this!!!* There is a much easier fix if you haven't tried it.
    1. Go into settings and click on reset. In reset page click reset *network settings*.
    2. Hold home button and power button at the same time until you see the apple logo
    3. After phone reboots turn it off and wait 5 minutes
    4. Turn phone back on and wifi will be fixed and not grayed out
I would definitely try this before you resort to cooking it with a hair dryer. Which i must admit i did try XD
-Hope this helps everyone it can

I tried absolutely everything to fix this ridiculously irritating problem; resetting the phone, forgetting networks, etc. I was going to use factory reset, but thought I'd give this a go first. I was really concerned about any possible damage but, really, what use is an iPhone without Wi-Fi anyway?! It worked and I'm actually shocked it did! I do wonder how this actually works, but considering how hot my phone was after using the hair dryer on it, I'm not sure I'd want to know!
One thing I will say, though, is that the phone gets so damn hot it's difficult to hold it and switch it off!
Thank you for an awesome fix to what had become the bane of my life the past 24 hours!

Like hundreds of other iPhone 4S users, my Bluetooth and WiFi both stopped working and would not turn on in the settings, no matter what I tried to do. Living in Melbourne Australia, I took the phone to the local Telstra shop, hoping they could help me, but they were as useless as tits on a bull. I’d just about given up on it ever working properly again and I was fully expecting to buy a new phone (definitely not another iPhone), especially after reading through all the forums and seeing just how many there were, with exactly the same problem, until I came across your solution. I thought I’ve got nothing to lose, so I tried it and I’m very happy to say that it worked. Not only is my WiFi working perfectly now, but the Bluetooth is as well. Thank you so much, you’ve saved me a lot of frustration and the cost of a new phone.

  • @shanegibbens

this works surprisingly well. You don't have to take the phone apart to fix it. When using the hair dryer I just had to hold it over the speaker for 3-5 minutes, never got the too hot message but it was hot so I shut it down and put in the fridge for 5 minutes and it works.
This might work because it helps the solder joints for the chipset to get resoldered. Use to do same thing for old pcb board but with a oven waaaay back in the day.
The screen does go black due to the heat but it does return to normal, just don't go crazy.
    Thank you fore the video.

GUYS STOP THE HATE!!! I have seen this Method Before, sometimes it doesnt work. The problem is that your phone might have an Overheated WiFi card, Like an Inaccessible SIM card. It may damage your phone though.

  • @holton345
    @holton345 3 года назад +1

Obviously, there is a solder or glue issue with the antenna so that it cracks over time. Heating it and then cooling it can sometimes reflow the solder or glue so that contact is once again made. I had not considered this with my 4S, due to its age. I was planning to do some chip swapping. This old trick that I had forgotten still works. I just tried it out when searching for a video on switching out the WiFi chip and decided to give it a try. My 4S is using iOS 9.3.6, which is the most current you can get this old phone up to. For whatever reason, it never gave me the heat warning. (It has in the past.) I damn near melted the thing before I decided to shut it down. WARNING: The glass faces and the metal bezel get very hot. I used a wooden hairbrush handle to press the button. I bagged it and stuck it in the freezer for about 5 minutes, restarted, et voila! I once again have both WiFi AND Bluetooth (which also had stopped working). Thanks, man!

I've a 4s having same issue & whatever the cause it drains the battery, also seems to cause phone to run warm. Yesterday read multiple 'how to fix sites'; from resetting network settings, hard shutdowns, (which neither worked), hairdryer/freezer and long complicated step-by-step directions of taking phone apart to fix the WiFi antenna. 6-21-16 when arriving home the temp of phone seemed warmer than usual, I walked past the frig & simply put my 4s on one of the shelves (NO hairdryer or freezer, just frig). Few hours later got 4s out of frig & I'll be ---, the WiFi was working. It's now the next day, still WiFi and battery life is 98%. I felt impelled enough to create a g-acct in order to share. It's my story for what's it's worth!

Hi, just thought I would share my experience. (FIXED)
Got a 4S second hand, and wifi was greyed out. The Apple support suggestions did nothing (no surprises) but I wasn't prepared to heat/freeze it just yet.
I did the reset/restore by holding on/off and home on startup then releasing on/off when you see the apple logo. Plugged it into my computer and did the restore (about 30mins) then iTunes asked if I wanted to update it to 8.something so I did the software update.
It still did not work, so I turned Aeroplane mode ON, then did the "Reset Network Settings".
When it came back on, the wifi was turned on, and it brought up all local wifi networks.
I am not sure what made it work, but now that it does I am happy! I have since turned it on and off, and done another reset of the network settings just to test it, and it is still working.

You are a genius!! This really worked! Since some say this is a "temporary" fix, should I restore the phone back to factory setting? Most folks say it was upgrading to IOS 7 that caused the problem.

It's the new marketing policy of Apple they make you buy new iPhones. I've got iPhone5s. My Phone was working perfectly, when iPhone 7 was released my phone started to have lots of issues, including the WIFI issue!!!

Quick Tip: Turn the phone around so the screen is facing downwards and heat the back of the phone, this will prevent the screen from potentially being damaged from excessive heat. constantly move the hairdryer around to avoid staying in one continuous spot. This method will heat the phone up quicker as the logic board sits on the back cover. You do not need to put it in the fridge just allow the phone to cool down in a natural environment. This method works however the "grey out" may occur again after some usage of the device requiring you to perform these steps again. Ideally the WIFI Chip on the logic board requires a solder reflow for a permanent solution.

Shane Peffley 70 euros or about 85 dollars.
The only other option is getting another device(thats what apple will say to you if you go there) dont go to apple.Ask a trusted mechanic

First able, thank you for your video. It helped to resolve the greyed out wifi button issue I've been having for months. Even though your "heat" method alone did not work but after restarting, I clicked on reset all networks; which I had tried numerous times before but never worked. So the credit is all yours!!!
Secondly, ignore all the haters and keep up all the good work.
    Thanks again :-)

OMG! I can’t believe this worked! I found my old iPhone 4s and I wanted to see if it would work because I’m so tired of all these huge phones.. the Wi-Fi was ghosted out so I did exactly as you said..blow dryer for 5 min (no emergency message came on but the screen colors looked like they were melting so I stopped) powered off, put it in a zip lock in freezer for 10 min and BOOM! Wi-Fi enabled and I could log into my account!!! I can’t use cellular since it’s too old for 4G, but can use Wi-Fi now! I thought it was going to ruin it or this was to just force people buy a new phone. Wowwww. Who needs to bake cakes when we can bake vintage electronics haha. Thank you!!!

That is awesome. After rebooting, resetting, updating iTunes and trying all the technical advice I thought I've got nothing to lose, give it a go. It worked like a charm. Thank You. How do people work this stuff out?? Maybe next time my car breaks down I'll get try to get access to a commercial heater and a fridge and give it a go!!

Worked!!! Thank you so much! I did get some black spots showing up on the screen at one point (there was no heat warning for me) but I stopped immediately and there were no lasting effects. Just a warning! Stop as soon as you see spots, even if there is no heat warning! But thank you, I know it wasn't your fault it happened. The fix worked in the end anyway!

  • @stevehall1416

I was a definite skeptic, but it worked! Only thing was the message about overheating didnt appear from the black screen, so when I checked it by pressing the screen activation button, the hot message was there and I powered it down. It was HOT!

In fact what happened was, once crashed due to over-heating, It is not necessary to freeze it. You could just let it cool down itself and put it in an air-conditioning room or even in any place with room temperature. It will take you only 5-10 minutes and you could just turn it on again. Didn't you find plenty of condensation on the phone? and sure it is also inside the phone which could lead to corrosion issue of logic board.
I even updated mine with iOS 9.1 and sometimes it was greyed-out if got it worked too long with wi-fi. What I did, turn it off, put it in air cond room for 1-2 hour, restart it again, and wifi resumed to work again. This is all related to that chip that you need to maintain not to let it work too "hard".....too "hot" actually, make sure you got a very satisfied speed of wifi and is reachable, otherwise the phone will keep searching and simply raise the temperature and crashed its wifi chip. This is how I maintain it to work without doing the hair-dressing over again.
