Were about the same age if you're still kicking, Loved this toon since it was first released. Found the linked singer a few years ago, and though she's not in the same genre as Bonnie (perhaps Haley Reinhart would be closer) this vocalist is a master of her instrument. @@andrewsandoz8005 Soul, gospel, and R&B music existed for many, many decades using melisma in the service of a song's emotion, not simply to draw attention to the technique of the singer. It wasn't until 1989's "Vision of Love" that melisma began to become an (increasingly tedious) end in itself. Houston's 1992 version of "I Will Always Love You" was a masterwork of tone and breath-work, but also showed how gospel inflections could be used to infuse even the simplest of songs with profound emotion (just as her mother, a member of The Sweet Inspirations, had done for many years). From there, it became less about the emotional intensity of gospel, and more about meandering flurries of notes for their own sake. Which you seem to equate with "black inspired music." Why don't you just admit that you speak before you know what you are speaking about?
Don't even get me started. It has taken me many years to forgive Bonnie for ditching Freebo & her old band when she was trying to "make it". I loved it when he played the tuba.
First saw Bonnie at the Sugarbush Folk Festival in 1972 with Tom Rush and Maria Muldaur. Last time was in 2003 when she appeared in San Francisco with Joan Baez in protest of the Iraq War buildup.
This is FREEBO! Thank you all for your sweet comments on my tuba and my person...really appreciated. If you're wondering what I'm up to these days, I have become a singer/songwriter, just finished my 5th CD (out in late Jan. '15), love what I'm doing, feel like I'm now fully expressing my creative spirit, I seem to be quite healthy, am more productive and happy than ever, and I'm beginning to get into Motivational & Inspirational Speaking doing what I call KEYNOTE CONCERTS. Check out my site www.freebomusic.com Thanks again, Y'all! Peace, F.
FREEBO! DUDE...I spent many of my high school and college days jamming to your bass lines with Little Feat! Just wanted to say hi and your'e the best! Cheers!
It's because tubas are the antithesis of cool. They are also heavy to carry around. On the plus side, carrying one around does build muscle and also tubas are known to increase lung capacity. I know all this from personal experience.
Saw Bonnie and this band back in the 70's and I was hooked! She is still fabulous 😍
ON the short list of the greatest female singers in my lifetime (and I'm pushing 65 with a short stick!). Bonnie, we are not worthy.

Bonnie awesome on slide guitar, nobody better !
If you don't hail this masterpiece, you're losing history. Just perfect. I hope, after all these years, that the swiss understood it, hoho.
Yeah Freebo!! Never knew he played tuba in concert until now.
Sublime
None of those unnecessarily acrobatic gospel runs that have plagued us since Mariah Carey. Just a damn beautiful voice with plenty of soul.
Just a different style. Why don't you just admit you have a problem with black inspired music?

There just aren't enough tuba solos in Rock and Roll.
It's being substituted for the jug.
Check out Taj Mahal, The Real Thing. Great Live Album backed with multiple tubas
Tuba is right smack at home in this YAY !
Wow can't believe there's a tuba, but sounds great!

I have loved her music for more years than I care to think about. Thank you for this super post.

Can someone explain to me why this song is not played on a regular basis on the radio?
Bonnie Raitt - Give It Up, Or Let Me Go Montreux 1977
Notice how you never saw Freebo and Zappa in the same place, at the same time?
