Greta review! Sounds very interesting, I'm hoping to get to this later in the year
I hope you enjoy it too!
What a lovely review Jasmine! I had no idea that the series originally started as a play. Now that you mention it, it makes so much sense! I ultimately decided that the writing style had to do with the Japanese translation. It was a strange juxtaposition as you said, but I think that incongruity was lessened slightly by listening to them on audiobook. I've found a few other pieces of Japanese literature to have similarly clipped, sparse sentences, so I'm unclear whether it is truly a stylistic choice or a product of the translation. Regardless, I didnt' think it ruined the reading experience. These are truly one of a kind.
It's funny you should say that, because after reading The Housekeeper and The Professor in the same month I got more convinced that it was a stylistic choice than a Japanese translation thing! The Housekeeper was downright poetic! Either way they've got me more keen to read translated works in the future
