    Hello everyone! Welcome to another video. Now, if you remember my 5AM writing (& morning) routine, then you will know that I used to get up super early every morning to write. On top of this, I have been a big Haruki Murakami fan for a very long time. SO, ever since i found out about his early morning, 4AM writing routine I've been curious to give it a go.
    This challenge looked like a lot of fun, and I'm so glad I did it! I won't lie, getting up at 4AM every day to write wasn't easy, and sometimes I struggled to be productive, but I felt like I learned so much along the way. Hope you enjoy the video! 💛

    I feel a big part of being a writer is planning what you're going to write rather than writing it. It is really rewarding for a reader to read something that is clearly well thought, and I believe it's always easy to tell when an author has done a work of exploration. So, don't underestimate your job just because of the amount of words you wrote. It is much more than that, you did great

    • @greyfox4838
      @greyfox4838 Год назад +57

      "I feel like the big part of being a writer is the non-writing rather than the writing" lol, whatever you need to tell yourself to justify not writing anything, planning does not happen independently of writing, planning happens when you're writing and deciding what sticks and what doesn't

      @@greyfox4838 Some people prefer to write with the guidance of a more concrete and detailed plan. Others prefer to make up things for their stories on the spot in the middle of writing. It's all just personal preference dude, no need to get all pissy

      @@greyfox4838 I think it's important to remember that everyone works differently. In my opinion, there's a lot more to writing than just sitting in front of a computer screen and typing. Planning, research, analysis of other forms of creative media, lived experience (and so much more) all feed into it. The 18 months I spent planning this story, researching this story and developing this story BEFORE I got the headspace to write it has been essential to the process.

      Oh, some of the best known, most brilliant authors in the history of literature would contradict you there.
      For them, it is/was about the flow. The irrepressible power of imagination.
      Planning meant/means for them to limit themselves. As if you see a loved one again after a long time and then, when you run towards each other, make a plan how to hug, when to kiss, how and for how long.
      Their stories and characters need to breathe, not move along a framework.
      But of course that doesn't mean in any way that it's the "right" way to write. Some authors make detailed plans. Some don't. For others it's a mix.

    • @aesyamazeli8804

      I read webnovels and weekly mangas, some writers can make it work not having a plan and just write whatever cool thing they can think of (usually the novels/mangas are just wishfulfillment powertrip so plot doesn't matter much, for example One Piece), while others crash and burn when they write themselves into a corner.
      But some of them are clearly planned from the start and the story is always the most satisfying, like Attack on Titan.
      But whatever you do, just have fun.

    You gotta remember Murakami said this is a challenge for a set period of time. He said up to 6 months. So if you start small at one week at a time, could you eventually do it for one month? 3 months? on and on... 🤔
    Also, for Murakami 5-10am is his work! He spends the rest of the day chillin'. So to try this on top of a full-time job is even more strenuous. Plus if you have a family, there's additional obligations to attend to.
    I think you did an excellent run at this challenge, so please give yourself a pat on the back ❤

      totally agree. Working full time and trying to do this challenge it's like doing nanowrimo it can be really hard work. Getting up early is find but you know it can actually put pressure on your entire body as the heart needs more rest. So take that into consideration too. For me I used to get up and write at 5 a.m before work and then running etc. I'm actually able to write now 20K words/week by writing in the evening after work and spending time on the weekend and longer stint on the Wednesday.

    Interestingly in Japan durring summer szn we have Tsuyu (rainy szn) so there are many dayz of rain and even though its summer it can be very cloudy during the mornings. I think gives a degree of ambiance that makes waking up in the early time of the morning during a rainy day very romantic.

I just love dawn, and writing while the light comes up, and having the written allocation done before the day starts. Different life stages bring different needs and preferences. Also, to get a long form work drafted with a demanding full time job (uni lecturer) I had to be ruthless with ‘when’. This was such an awesome chance to live vicariously- 🙏

      Here's an EXCELLENT tip I picked up: write 15 minutes a day to get you into the zone! Even if it's just fifteen minutes or you get inspired to write more, it's a fantastic way to make a routine. Another similar piece of advice I picked up recently blew my mind: just write three sentences. Just three! They'll get your curiosity, motivation, and creative drive all fired up! The best of luck!

      I recommend the video 'Turning Pro' by Storytellers. It explains Steven Pressfield's book about 'resistance'. Essentially, a 'professional' mindset still feels fear, (resistance) but they do it anyway, knowing that inspiration will come after they start, where the 'amateur' will wait for "inspiration" and spend time procrastinating or never even start. Joyce Carol Oates also has great advice on routines (such as morning pages). Of course, not everyone can fit into routines, and that's OK, too.

    I think this routine would be easier with a novel (compared to articles or short stories), because you can just pick up where you left off. It reminds me of Hemingway's advice; do your writing in the morning, and then spend the rest of the day doing something other than thinking about your writing. I remember reading a quote somewhere about how much Murakami writes in a day, and it's not an insane amount of words for the length of time. And it sounds like he then has to revise quite a lot. I think it's a pretty easy routine if we assume that much of that writing will get cut or revised. Perhaps it's just about hitting the flow state and not worrying too much about output quality?

    Having special routines of waking up at 4am and such are good for people who can live from their writing and also live in a quiet place where they can sleep whenever they need it, but for those who still have to keep a "real job" to pay the bills and have to live in apartments where neighbors won't shut up until almost midnight and ther's constant activity in the early morning... it's a bit tricky. I'm preparing myself for Camp Nanowrimo in july, so this was super entertaining. I love the feeling of community I get from writer social media because it can be so so isolating. Thanks Christy :)

    I thrive as a night owl. However, have to say that getting up early on the weekend (I wake up before 6am for work on weekdays) to exercise before the daytime heat sets in made SUCH a difference in my day, that I am making it a goal to do so on the weekends. It's sickening, I don't know who I am. But all to say, thanks for filming the challenge - we can all relate on some level

    Reminds me of when I used to wake up every day at 4am to go to the gym. Was hell for a month or so, but did eventually get used to it. Feels good to get something out of the way before everyone else even wakes up. I gave it up after about a year (mostly because I was having a hard time going to bed early enough); maybe I'll try it again here soon.

    Heey, nice experiment :) but I am sure Haruki Murakami actually wakes up this early because of the sunrise, not the hour itself. It would be cool to see if you wake up with the sun. Here is a quote of his from South of the Border, West of the Sun - "Every morning, when the sun rises in the east, you go out to work in your fields. When it's directly overhead, you take a break for lunch. When it sinks in the west, you go home to sleep..."

    • @Ssaidak
      @Ssaidak 5 месяцев назад

      He says he maintains the some routine in all the seasons, and thinks half of his life as a writer or more he has been living in Boston. Boston or Tokyo, in winter you dont see the sun arises at the some time. You dont see the sun in Tokyo till 8 or more in the winter. And also he is always saying that the first thing he does everyday its training for the next marathon and triatlon, and that you need be there before there a lot of people in the parks. Sometimes he runs in the afternoon too, but he is usually training in the morning till 8 or 9. Depends of the phase of the training.

      and also say that he past part of his life writing in the morning after closing the bar, and also in the bar when was quiet. sleeping by day and being awake all night working, smoking insanely, in a night bar when they have a lot of underground moments, as its having a night bar in Kabukicho, known by being the yakuza district. So one day he decided leaving smoking and at the some time have a pretty healthy life. But he passed a lot of years sleeping by day and having a lot of action in the nights.

    What I Talk About When I Talk About Running was my first Murakami's book. I fell in love with it and also started to run every morning! It was a good month, I was more happy and helped me a lot during the pandemic. Maybe I'll be running again. Great video, you did it great! Loved your channel!

    This video was so cute! Really enjoyed it. Relaxing, funny and encouraging. Gonna work on my sci-fantasy novel this afternoon and try to be productive! (Sadly for me, to do the morning writing routine means waking up around 3 AM before my 6 AM factory shift and getting perhaps 2 hrs of tired writing time, but I may try it again soon as it's worked before.)
