"What is with the head dunk?" You've got a special nerve response in your face to cold water. Put your body in cold water, it goes "shit, get out of the cold water!" and your pulse rises. Put your head underwater and your nervous response goes "ok we're stuck in here then, better adapt and slow down heat loss", and your pulse slows.

bro i started doing cold showers like 6 months ago and now im obsessed and want to experience an ice bath. Thanks for clearing up the benefits and negatives.
I've had cold baths before and I swear my johnny retracts into my body. Strangely I tend to start huffing and puffing in cold showers but not in cold baths - I didn't shiver once and coming out of it felt warm instead of cold.
Great video! Those are some interesting benefits. My exercise physiology teacher was against using ICE for injury and recovery cause of the reduction in blood flow which reduces the nutrients coming to the muscles and the white blood cells which break up and remove any damaged tissue, also it slows down cellular processes which increases healing time. Chronic inflammation isn't good but you actually want the acute inflammation because the reason it's there is the white blood cells are doing their job removing damaged tissue and it acts as a natural brace so you don't damage the area further. Using heat will increase blood flow by expanding the blood vessels which will bring more nutrients and white blood cells to the muscle or injured area and also in most cases relieve pain and muscle soreness or even chronic pain aswell as lowering blood pressure. It would be interesting to see if you notice your blood pressure is higher after an ice bath due to blood vessel constriction. The adrenaline kick you get from it probably gave you most of the benefits.
Your half right, as is he. Heat and cold are both needed for different things. Someone who works out gets great benefits from ice baths, joints , ligaments, tendons, nervous system all benefits from ice baths, not to mention the spine. Now for muscle Injury heat is king. It's a matter of goals, anyone who is in the game knows both are needed at different times for different things. To lose one , your stealing benefits from yourself.
I stopped cold showering because I realised most of my contractures and trigger points were due to cold showers, especially when I took them after workout. If I cold showered in the morning, they didn't give me that much pain and problems, but now that I totally quit cold showering, they are getting smaller and I don't even have new ones. I'm not saying that you should quit, but it seems that it doesn't work for me.
I shave my head and after doing it I dunk my head in super cold water for a while to limit any redness or whatnot. Something definitely happens when you dunk your head into super cold water. It really feels like freaking out for just a second. Thad definitely has to do _something_ to us.
Hey! So I am interested in seeing a challenge about cold water swimming. Not necessarily ice water swimming but in the 40 - 50F range and if you can adapt to the cold. The Alcatraz swim in San Francisco requires about 1.5 miles in the bay which fluctuates in that temp range. It's very cold water (not icey but still cold). Thank you!
Ur cold bath is just like meditation cz u r focusing on one thing when u r bathing ... Nd focusing on one thing is too hard nowadays that's why ur bath boost ur mental capabilities like felling fresh after exhausting work ... Thats my perspective
Like you mentioned with the calories, the main reason I took ice baths was to fire up my metabolism, and get lean. And it worked. I also was able to melt the ice because my diet was around 2500 calories, and my usual intake is 3000+. So, for getting lean, I believe longer time increases those effects.
So I suggest to you this challenge. Try reading a chapter every day for a weak from the Bibel , randomly. Just open the Bibel and go to the begining of that chapter and just read it thru . I seen you do a lot of stuff knowing that were not going to be so beneficial . Why not try this ? See if it will bring you more awareness , wiseness or joy ? Looking forward to seeing you complete this challenge . Good luck!

“Increases happiness” this explains a lot for the Finnish people. They all seem so damn happy all the time. Lol. Said respectfully and is a good thing :)
question is it actually the ice bath increasing mental performance. Or is it just you putting your body in an unusual situation creating more pathways in the brain (a.k.a stimulation) increasing mental performance.
question : it is actualy healthy to take an ice bath after a work-out ? You muscles are warm . When you get into an ice bath, you musles are responding to the cold, what i mean is : couldn't you get some kind of thermoshock ? I know some topsporters are also doing this, but i still doubt if this is actualy healthy ... Do you have an oppinion about this ? Thanks
In Finland, it's called "avanto". Basically, it's paired with the sauna experience during winter, as Finns alternate between the 170-180 degree sauna and the 10-20 degree lake/sea water. Usually the people who do the ice swim part stay in there for roughly half a minute to a full minute, then hop back into the sauna. The act of putting your body through two extreme temperatures in such a short time increases body adaptability and overall health.
Saw this again and feel like a popsicle. The dancer Derek Hough took Leg ice baths and used toe socks to reduce inflammation. I prefer heat & self massage in lieu of ice.
How could you get into the water as if it was a warm bubble bath? I'd be dead by the moment the water touches my hip area. What temperature should you aim for? Is it just the coldest faucet adjustment? I'm watching you doing it but I'm not comprehending...
This activates brown fat metabolism. The mitochondria in brown fat can convert body fat into pure heat energy by uncoupling the inner membrane proton gradient. This is used by small rodents and hibernating bears to keep warm without muscle contraction or shivering. The more brown fat you have, the higher your metabolism and the less overall body fat. It's in the book "The Science of Fitness" by Greg LeMond.
I've been interested a long time into taking ice baths. I am going to buy a new 250l whiskey/wine barrel. They cost around €140 here. I plan to buys the ice from the store and make it myself for the first weeks. If i will keep continuing i will buy a cheap ice maker for around €100-200. They can make 10-20L ice in 24h.
The track teacher in my school always makes his athletes take an ice bath after workouts. After incorporating stretches, our track team barely ever dealt with injuries or soreness
I used to wana try an ice bath cuz I remember Brock Lesnar used to do them and I thought it'd be cool to try. But I hate cold temperatures, and can barely hold my hands in ice water for too long let alone my whole body.
