Giro 2024 Week 1 Recap - Can anyone catch Pogacar? | THEMOVE

- The predictions of a dominant Tadej Pogacar did not dissapoint. Tadej appears to be setting the stage for a likely Giro/TDF back to back combo. Our pre-race predictions for a podium including Thomas and Martinez is likely.

Giro by far the most beautiful tour. Italy is just incredible.
for a few days or max a week. otherwise their bland food will get boring and unhealthy very fast and their cultural arrogance will get on your nerves.
@@user-it5gk5qe6gI had totally different experiences, especially in the countryside. The culture (and cuisine) is very much connected to their land and its history. It's very rich in cultural capital. It's okay to be proud of that. When people start gatekeeping or get chauvinistic, it's more one those people than on Italian culture or the population as a whole.
The Giro is a better race. Its always been a punchier more aggressive and exciting race.
For sure, compared to last years, when almost every day was raining, more like floods with low temperatures and unsafe riding in such conditions was terrible to watch.
They should replace the Young Rider's jersey with a Master's jersey (35+).
Brilliant 😂
Maybe I'm in the minority, but I love the extended coverage. I've been following racing since Lance was killing it in Europe and I remember how limited our viewing options were then. Now I can turn on the Tour of Italy and watch it while I do work around the house and if I have to, I can always come back later and watch what I missed at my convenience. I l ove this new coverage and am glad we have it.
Also all the new camera work 🎉 love full coverage, but I do miss GCN
I love it too!
I first watched when Greg lemond won the tdf. So little coverage back then. I love all the coverage.
💯
live full coverage tho? nope
Splitting the TV rights between so many different providers is just silly if you want to see a sport succeed.
Please continue doing JB2 cos we don't need a recap of grand tour week where they discuss about golf, ratings and dullness of cycling.
Cycling is already amazing cos of the historic scenery and millions of spectators by the road who wait there whole day just to see cyclists for couple of seconds. And today we are in the cycling era of respect among competitors, high class and sportsmenship. Just look around, Pogacar dominates, but nobody among cyclists hates him. He remains humble and even does work in his team for others. Again please, continue with JB2 episodes.
Right? There was almost no actual race coverage in this episode despite the race being amazing so far. JB2 or anything with Johan and Spencer covering the actual racing is much more interesting.
I prefer the GIRO over everything.
Are you from itali 😂
@@thomaspetersen9991 Nope, USA.
Yup! The Tour is more hype. Sure the best show up and theres a thousand times the media but the Giro has usually been a better race.
@@sullysullster8217 Food is way better also. LOL
My favorite line in this was when lance said he doesn’t do these shows to talk about himself. 😂
He is very humble indeed, he is almost erasing himself, guilt tripping I guess Man Hinault & Jallabert are all over TV only talking about themselves.
Poggys is in the process of painting his masterpiece this year
If the Giro was in a package with Le Tour and the Vuelta, I’d pay for that but, I’m not paying for a separate service just for the Giro. I’ll pay for The tour and the Vuelta on Peacock.
Eurosport highlights and closing 4 or 5k is sufficient Giro coverage for me.
Totally agree
I just don't think that having a guy like Pogacar making history is boring. I actually watch it because of him (just like I used to watch tennis because of Federer, MotoGP because of Valentino Rossi, and WRC because of Sebastien Loeb)
Hi from Denmark. Just to let you all know.....Vingeggard is on th bike again, training outside, as one can see in a vd, put up by Visma L.B. As a dane and a fan of cycling, i hope so much, that we all gonna see that rivalry again, on the top level, as we seen the last 2 years. Isn´t that what we all wanna see..?? I´m hoping for it to happen. Cheers.
Except Pog was not on top form last year..
I loved getting to know racers and families. Up close and personal stuff. Then each run broken down hazards etc. Then we feel in the race more.
Great show today guys! 👏👏👏
Numbers are down because life is expensive and many will not pay crazy amounts of money to another streaming package when GCN had it for a very affordable price. Canceling GCN app was a horrible idea.
BS. For $15.99 for the month of May you can stream the Giro commercial free with replays and a much better platform. If that breaks the bank, $9.99 with commercials. I find it hard to believe that’s gonna break the bank for anyone with their priorities in order. For F’s sake - skip a Big Mac meal or two.
Yes that does break the bank when GCN was $80 per year, and that included all races, track racing, mountain bike racing, triathlon racing, documentary and much, much more. Also I don't eat at any fast food chains.
The UCI should have bought GCN+ they have the best motivation for growing the sport
I love watching the Giro coverage from start to finish here in the USA on Max! It starts where I am at 420 AM so have to set the alarm and watch it in my phone while I go to the gym and multitask but I love it from start to finish. Italy is gorgeous! I’ve asked relatives if they would want to live there and they said no, the economy is bad and Rome is way overcrowded but it’s beautiful nonetheless. Loving this Giro and thanks for the great show guys! ❤️
Preach, Johan, preach.
Thanks for another informative show, gentlemen.
When talking about viewership numbers one big difference between Tiger, Lance and Pog is the fact that Pog is not American. Why would Americans join a streaming site to watch a non American dominate a race? I recon if he was the numbers would be a lot higher.
Come on bro, NAIRO is also a hall of famer on the race. Please respect the Condor de los Andes 🦅🏔 Mad respect for G too.
I always thought Nairo was overrated. Great climber but rarely delivered when it mattered most. And I say this as a fan of his.
Pogacar is an athlete. Golfers are not
WEDU needs a streaming service! You are so right, numbers are down due to the loss of GCN. It is a real struggle down here in NZ.
i'm from europe, Cycling is huge here, Golf is nothing here, so Pogi is at least as important as woods
You must be joking.......Golf is far bigger than cycling - and has far more money in it.
@@WerdnaLiten not in Europe... maybe in the UK... but the rest of Europe does not care about Golf
Great video & comments as usual - especially drawing attention to the loss of viewers since GCN is no longer available. Also good to hear the comments on Geraint Thomas - what a star! Multiple world & Olymic Champion on the track - riding several minutes as a pursuit rider on a track then multiple podium finishes in 3 week Tours - including of course his victory in 2018 - and still a down to earth guy without a massive ego!
I was never a fan of the 5 hour marathon tv coverage. The 1 hour post race show covering the critical parts of the stage, analysis, and next day preview was far more interesting.
Geraint is an Olympic champion in addition to all the cycling world TDF etc.
Just looked up his wikipedia, 2 Olympic golds, 3 World Champ golds. As a cycling fan I really only, properly, rate classics & GTs myself but Geraint is still definitely a Hall of Famer. He has achieved so much despite falling off more than any other top rider I can think of.
The question of length of races vs fans attention span comes up all the time & is a despicable point, not worthy of this podcast. So the Tours become TV friendly distances & we all stop respecting them the same day. It is the shear duration that is the test of strength. If they could do this 100+yr ago. What, are we weaker now?
The road cycling world is pretty insular towards the other cycling disciplines.......So top riders in Track, MTB aren't rated as highly as they should be.
Kids will watch 12 hours of a video game tournament.
Great show despite the non-race. Another reason Tadej Pogacar isn't Tiger Woods is because he isn't American, or even West European. He is Slovenian. Slovenia is a tiny country that produces many of the world's greatest athletes while the rest of the world hardly notices. Pro cycling needs to promote its stars, and its marque teams, internationally, but the current terrible structure of the sport discourages it.
keep up the good work fellas
I get the feeling talking TdF all year helps implicitly inflate Lance's ego with his record in that race.
Keep it to Giro for now plenty of time to talk TdF when is time
honestly, the giro has been so much more fun than last year's tour.
also, remco has videos about he coming back to training on his youtube
Johan B knows Pog and his UAE hit squad are doping just as our man Lance and his Blue train did back in the day. Sage's advice - don't get too greedy, we have made those mistakes in the past haha.. Lance going "oh boy"
while a more open hip angle can help generate more power, the power arc of the stroke shortens. this is why oval rings make sense in theory to reduce the dead zone of the pedal stroke but increase the power side of it. in tts shorter cranks make more sense because of the very aggressive constant position. and maybe its more aero from a smaller pedaling diameter, but the saddle must be raised which is less aero. like anything theres a sweet spot with wiggle room. to go 1mm either way is more marginal than an osp because the riders' body will adapt to be more efficient.
Can someone help me find the ratings and viewership numbers cited in this podcast? Having trouble finding any reporting on Eurosport tv ratings and max streaming numbers for this giro. Thank you.
Tadej is not only the greatest cyclist on the planet, he is also the most likeable of all the top riders. He is so easy to root for. But any comparison to Tiger Woods is ridiculous. Tiger was a phenomenon. He single handedly elevated and totally transformed his sport as no other athlete ever has or likely ever will.
Totally transformed the sport!! Its still just golf. Get over it.
One thing to consider with respect to leverage and cranks is that the crank arm length is just one point of leverage in the drive train. The other is obviously the chainrings/cassette combos, so talking about just crank arm length with longer cranks equating to more leverage doesn't quite cover it. And beyond the biomechanics Johan mentioned, shorter cranks have that bit less frontal area, and the smaller chainrings you might use with shorter cranks weigh less.
Johan "Anything more boring than Formula 1?'
Me "Golf"
For someone who races, or has raced, the full coverage of the grand tours and stage races is important. While everything appears to happen in the last hour or so, that hour was set up in the previous four or five hours. Lance's point about "packaging" sports for the younger generation - I think the sport can continue to put more emphasis on cyclocross, to build that interest.
I disagree with Lance and Johan regarding the viewership of The Giro vs the Tour , vs F1.
Your opinions May be valid in the USA but Europe loves to attend and watch on their sports channels like TG1 or RAI in Italy. And Euorosport all over The E.U.
I can say that in Arizona many riders were dismayed at the cancellation of GCN but we had to find other sources of this great race.
My last question is specifically define why the two of you state that the Giro is the second best vs. The Tour ? What is your criteria .
I do like the breakaway formation 😊😊
Orange LMT is on repeat shipment and is a daily. I add LMT mixed with a little homemade apple cider vinegar (couple of tablespoons) and its game on.
I think cycling should give all their rights in the US to Max and Peacock. Flo taking some Belgian classics is frustrating. Need just one or two streaming services for all the content.
I defended tactics of Ineos, too.
The problem with cycling is that you have to have 3 different subscriptions to watch racing.
Amercian watching from Sydney. Lance and Johan dropping science.
It sucks that NBC sports isn’t carrying the Giro! And the recaps on RUclips are too short. I’ve been to the Giro and it’s a blast to follow
I’m American and I like many sports, including cycling. I don’t know why more Americans don’t like cycling? It is just as exciting as any other sport.
Which rivals do you guys keep referring to? Vingegaard is the only rider that managed to beat Pogacar in a grand tour in the past three years.
I think the show is so much better when Spencer hosts. Would love to see more of him.
That Jay Z quote was legit, Lance.
Ineos have said they are experimenting with 165mm crank arms
Lance may just be a bit old school. I understand the point regarding TV, but a quick comparison between the stage 20 TT highlight video by gcn 2023 vs the stage 7 highlight video by Eurosport in 2024 will show that this years TT already has about ¾ of last years views. And I would bet 11 months down the road it will have more views even though it wasn‘t nearly as decisive or interesting. And that is RUclips. We both know that is not the favorite platform for todays kids anyways. And on Instagram Pog has 1.5 million followers which is nothing compared to football or basketball stars, but it is still huge in the world of cycling or endurance sports. So I guess he certainly has appeal to a broader young audience. And even if your story certainly was bigger. He is the first cyclist people beyond cycling started to notice in a long time.
Tip: I'm watching the Giro online on Australian TV for free (from the US)
But you need a VPN.
@@goldenretriever6261 Correct
And SBS will cover you for le tour, Vuelta, and all classics. It’s my go to move since all other options suck
@robertm1552 Nope- SBS on demand has free coverage, start to finish plus an hour's highlights 2X daily
Relying to comment re VPN. Apologies
Want to boost ratings for cycling? Find a way to get the top names in the same race. You compared cycling to F1, but at least I know who is going to show up in a F1 race. I like cycling so much more, but want to see the best compete against each other. I know that’s not how the sport is set up, but it’s the biggest thing holding the sport back from a wider audience.
Agh! I have max and didn’t even realize it was on there. I’ve been annoyed by the lack of video coverage too. That’s on me. Thanks for calling out the coverage though, homies. I can watch the rest of the giro now lol
RE: Viewer numbers - Max is 3x the price of what GCN Plus was. It's almost like decisions have consequences and the market just won't bear that absurd and downright greedy move by WB-Discovery.
Lance always loved George no matter wtf where is he 😅
Lance "im not gonna talk about myself" Armstrong
5x more people watch the Giro(800mill) than the superbowl(150 mill) and twice as many watch the Giro than the Footballs champion leagues(400mill)
Jonas is done! Johann doesn't know what he's talking about. He usually does but this time he's totally disregarding the physical and mental trauma of Jonas' crash. He will never race with the same confidence again. That was a life changing crash there. The video where he shows he's back on the bike is like a video of somebody getting kidnapped and they are ordered to look happy and say that everything is going well. If you haven't truly check his crash go find a long video of the stage and you'll see how extremely hard he crashed right into a boulder and was thrown over it where he remained until taken out on a stretcher. Anytime he will be in a race, esp on descents he will be on his toes. He should avoid Tour by all means and focus on healing, but of course it's big business so the sponsors and the team directors will push him over the cliff. All for the fame and money. That's why Roglic left Visma. They never let him heal, so he got sick and tired of it racing with his body half broken. When he went to get a second opinion the team doctors went against it and claimed he was fine when he totally wasn't. He had multiple injuries that never healed due to the pressure to perform and not take time off, and sacrifice his health for the team. Sad but true. Most of you fresh fans of cycling are extremely ignorant of what racing on such level is about as you are in general ignorant about life and fame as well, which involves many industries and other fields of life. I'm not surprised at all.
This was just not liseneable. But it is cool Lance and Brunel selling chemistry. Their experise
Max and peacock for all cycling
My first experience with the Eurosport commentators solidifies my view that Liggett should retire
Pogi looks a kilo or more lighter this year to me.
At the start of the giro he looked like he did mid tour last year.
He always looks the same to me.
His nose is not sunburned like it usually is. That's a good thing.
Johan talked about it on this podcast after Strade Bianche
When 95% of the GC favorites are not at the race, Tadej has no problem winning this race. Unless he gets taken out by something or someone. All ******
I love the WEDU show but not this one on Giro. There are way too many talking around the Giro but the race itself. I would prefer a stage by stage small recap and give a bit more mention to other teams and winners. I have it open on loudspeaker and my friend who is just a random race watcher said ‘so it’s a boring race they say. Then what is a recap for ?’ He could be biased but the impression isn’t wrong. The discussion is all over the place with a lot of underlying assumption that listeners follow the sport closely and know what is being talked about. It is very hard to follow for those who don’t but want to hear about the Giro. Even for me who watched the entire Giro so far, I get very little wisdom out of it. You can do way better than the RUclips kids on racing strategy, analysis. That’s what I’m here for, at least for this kind of episode like what you do for the Tour.
Look into lanterne rouge cycling podcast
Exactly! If people are listening to a giro recap they're definitely already cycling fans.. this discussion was way too high level and not related to the actual racing at the giro. Also yes a week recap is way too spread out. The Cycling Podcast is really good, give that a shot
With the success of the Tour de France show on Netflix, it would be cool to see Netflix broadcast the TdF live stage by stage. TBH I'm getting subscriptioned to death. I don't want another subscription to just watch cycling. Cycling needs to find away to get their product to the masses via mainstream sources, especially in NA. I'm in Canada and its hard to follow along without one more subscrpition. Get with Amazon Prime, Netflix, Crave, RUclips, whatever.
I would guess its the change in broadcaster, people need new subscriptions. And that can be an issue in these times.
The streaming war is destroying the audience for not so mainstream sports. Before you had espn in your cable tv subscription, that most people have to watch football or basketball or whatever, and people would watch what they where transmitting and get hooked. Now no one knows where to watch. In most Latin American countries, the only what to watch is claro tv, who has that?
Numbers are down because in country's like India we can't watch
at 6:02 , does lance way with vit d he would have won the tour for an eight timelol
GT is fading back - Tadej is riding in a bubble for 99.9% of the stages. The final 3 will be Pogacar, Martinez, Tiberi- that order
Pogacâr
Martinez
Tiberi
O'Connor
Arensman
Thomas
Bottom line Pogi is warming up for The Tour.
Cyclists shouldn't have a Vit D problem, you get Vit D from the sun, get plenty of sun, but use UV Block, unless it's wintertime
Twitter should be called “Y” like y are you still looking at it 😅
golf is a good comparison. the additional thought is that you are assuming they want a worldwide audience. Augusta did not, and still does not want diversity, and from my experience in France, Italy, I assume that these are local events and are run in such a way. That an outsider wins is maybe considered a negative. The Giro is for Italians and for ppl to admire Italy... end of story, jmtc, I could be way off.
only 2 Hall of famers?
Benjamin Thomas, 5 World Championship titles on the track(Madison, Omnium, Points race), 5 European championship titles on track.
on top of that there are 11 podiums in World and European track championships apart from his gold medals, that makes it 21 time he has been on a podium in a world or european track championship. He is definately a Hall of famer.
Golf was super boring during Tiger woods it was maxed getting television views because of the media companies. They decide not the viewers Tiger was politically correct fuel.Vingo will win the tdf if he is not permanently damaged from accident.
No doubt TV viewing in the US is down, after the best coverage we've ever had was killed by bean counters to be replaced by crappy streaming service run by people who know nothing about cycling or cycling fans. I won't pay for that.
Poh-gaachah. Jeez.
I like Lance and the show but to say the racing might be boring is hilarious. The Lance reign of wins was some of the most boring racing ever. Lance and Postal was the most methidical when it came to patrolling the peloton. Bullying and deals being made was par for the course. Lance was great for American cycling but the racing strategy was predictable as the sun rising and just as exciting.
Cycling just like Nascar is boring until the final kilometers. I don't have the time to watch feed zone activities or watch all the beautiful scenery. Even during the tour I catch the youtube condesned highlights unless it's a really close mountain stage that might have some excitement. That's coming from a 66 year old cyclist.
Lance that is too much publicity to handle at the startn makes you lose lots of viewers. Make them.way shorter.less talking , more visuals.
I'm having a hard time watching cycling atm. After Vingegaard's absolutely ridiculous time trial in the TDF last year and Pogacar times that surpass known dopers of the past I don't believe any of these guys are clean. I think they just need to give up on acting like modern sports are legit. From LeBron James to Pogacar all these guys are enhanced. Let's just accept it and have it out in the open.
you are so right. The dope is sadly always ahead of the dope testing. look at all the young fit healthy athletes collapsing on the field of play in recent times.. people are quick to blame a certain vaccination… I’m convinced it’s the new dope they are all taking.
Weird podcast to listen to if this is your take ..
@@briankelly3568 who better to discuss what's really going on.
Yes I believe they are not clean, but I just don’t think about it and enjoy the racing, because it’s still fun to watch.
There’s too much technology to catch drugs these days. So they arnt on anything.
Soccer is popular with kids and its long and boring. So whats the point?
Their are very rare charismatic personalities in sports that drive audiences and there is more to it than just being excellent. Muhammed Ali, O.J. Simpson, Bo Jackson, Carl Lewis, Lance Armstrong, Michael Jordan, Tiger Woods, Mike Tyson, Usain Bolt, and Serena Williams are examples of athletes who are able to transcend the audience that normally follows their sports. For all of his brilliance, and he is the brightest star in cycling, Tadej Pogacar is not THAT kind of personality. And honestly I'm glad for him, because when you look at that list there aren't very many people on it that I would want my child to be...that limelight is very destructive.
Muhammad Ali is the best one on your list, an inspiration.
@@mikeecker he really is the first modern athlete and the prototype for the idea that I am trying to express. All modern athletes owe him a debt of gratitude.
TV presentation has nothing to do young people not watching. Road bikes are too expensive. Why would you watch cycling if you can't afford a bike?
LOL, nobody likes golf in the EU, dont be subjective
I’m sure you did some blood work the other day lance, lts a very hard podcast to watch, of course you use the podcast to crowbar yourself into the conversation at any given moment like unlikeable narcissists do.
