Great stuff. The first American, a guy name Jim Whittaker, climbed Everest this same year. Hillary and Tenzing had made the first ascent of Everest 10 years earlier--although some new evidence suggests that Mallory and Irving may have made it in 1924 (and died on the way down).
Its good they did all that hard work building the school and water supply, as it certainly helped them acclimate and pepare their bodies. Physically and spirituality. Nowadays wealthy people just show up at everest and head right up. Wild.
