Just chiming in as a Mechanical Engineer that worked for the automotive industry for a brief period of time but more importantly as a car enthusiast and connoisseur. Break in periods are more of a question of feeling good with your own conscience than a reality these days. No matter what the dealership tells you. Without much detail, break in periods existed so that the pyston rings between other things would fit against the cylinder wall since cylinder walls used to be rough to allow for better oil adhesion. Nowadays though, things are different. And the reason for that is we have much better technology than 50 years ago. We have much tighter tolerances, better machining technology, which allows for much higher controlls over dimensional requisites, we build more and more engine blocks on alluminium instead of cast iron which also further reduces the need for break in periods outside of factories. The other reasons as to why break in periods aren't really a thing anymore is because engiens are tested in factory before reaching the final consumer, which also happened with Rob's Ferrari, which means they were already submited to some sort of testing which includes but not only, high reving, and if this wasn't enough these days engines really break in in a matter of minutes/hours or a couple of miles due to all of that stuff I mentioned above. So, all in all, feel free to treat your engine well on the first miles but in reality, if your engine breaks during the first few thousand miles it will most likely have nothing to do with how you broken the engine in.
What about scored pistons and sleeves from all of the metal scraps in the oil? Ask any tech that services cars, a lot of shit comes out in the oil at the first service. Mainly metal scraps. You don't want those running through an engine at high RPM.
My California T had a break in period (owners manual specifies 1500 miles I believe) and when it was serviced the oil was filthy. Same engine as the 488, just different turbos.
"Just chiming in as a Mechanical Engineer" That's a pretty big statement to make, considering I work with one at a Ford dealership in SC. You definitely weren't an engineer in the U.S. automotive industry, so i'll just take your comment with a grain of salt.
One being a light weight sports car with new technology and the other being a massive truck that has a manual transmission. Very bizarre that they feel the same!
Rob, you are very blessed. Hard work pays off! You do a good job promoting fun and games, but I imagine there's a TON that goes on behind the scenes that nobody but you and Management sees. And I can't even imagine how stressful that can be at times.
Ferrari has advanced so much over the years where they can now just assume something is wrong and turn on the check engine light every time you start the car. Hopefully in the future, every time you get in a fire extinguisher will go off.
Hey Rob great video i think the 488 spider looks better than the coupe as well and can we get more videos like this occasionally where you answer some questions from the comments
Auto journalist Doug Demuro bought a used Aston Martin with an unlimited mileage bumper to bumper warranty. the warranty was like $4k, but the car had tons of issues and he got over $6k in free repairs within two or three months. it's become a running joke to ask if someone's fancy new supercar has a bumper to bumper warranty, because most don't, but his used late 2000s Aston does.
I love how you buy a car with the intent of not losing money on it. I am not in the same league money wise but I have owned over 75 cars in 20 years and only lost money on one because it caught fire before I got insurance on it.
Rob, highly suggested if you ever have the check engine light on and want to find the problem quick get the blue driver. You can get it on amazon and it is well worth the money. I've used it on my cars to find out what was wrong and was able to fix the problem. It helps to find out what's wrong quick and get it fixed quickly.
I sure as hell hope a Ferrari 488 has a proximity key as advanced as my 2015 Civic EXL, but that is one gorgeous car, congrats Rob, Ferrari red is simply stunning.
I like when Rob basically said I dress with whatever deal with it. Thats a good point because we dress to attract beautiful women, but if your rich, you have no problem attracting gorgeous ladies so why bother. Yaba daba doooo. Speaking of T-tops, those cars are the best.
As for break in: In 1990, I saw the first few 348 TB cars straight off the truck at Miller Motorcars in Greenwich CT.... After quick inspections, the guys from service took each one out onto route 1, SIDEWAYS with tire smoke....
I dont know if it would be unusual though. I heard they are notoriously crappy. Break down all the time and they depreciate quickly. I've never owned one though and I dont know if i want to.
Love the non lock with keys in the trunk feature, reminds me of a time was going shopping, it was a little warm out, threw my coat in the trunk.... that automatic reflex of putting your keys in your pocket, realized it a split second to late, spent the next hour ripping the back seat out and trying to grab my coat threw the back seat cross bracing, at least the car wasn't locked. I would guess that same feature works on locking the keys in the car.
A lot of modern cars have electric oil pumps that run for 15-30 seconds after you turn the car off, and an oil+water cooled ball bearing turbo isn't anywhere near as bad as old journal bearings for cooking when turned off.
To add to Rob's answer of why he got his car faster than Joe-Schmo is because Ferrari considers customers like Rob to be like extension of their sales family; they help them move more cars faster; not only because he is loyal to the brand, but Press too. It just makes good business sense for Ferrari, in spite of the risk of butt-hurt to some new customers, but everyone has to wait at first or they pay double or triple. Huge congrats on the car Rob, she is sexy AF! Can't wait for a road trip video through the hills somewhere soon.
Can you please do an update on your business, and how it works, where you're located, how you're better than others, your role, how you fit RUclips into it, how if it's your company they're not your cars. And things like this. Please?
he has gone into detail what he does for a living, and explains his relationship with gotham dream cars, their locations, how it got started, what projects he has going on now, how much he makes off of youtube, and the fact that he does not own gotham dream cars. just look through his videos and he has 3 or 4
I agree on the convertibles, if they're well maintained they're nice. I actually just bought my first one back in August. Though I immediately bought stuff to stiffen the car up a bit, since it's a Stang. It feels solid, not quite as good as a modded coupe, but pretty damn good for a convertible.
It's a gorgeous car. It's a stupid car, just like the truck you hated, but I still like it. It's overpriced, impractical, but it's interesting. I love seeing the interpretation everyone has, for the ideal transportation.
As said in your previous video, the first model years are the ones to get because Ferrari upsells you to get the top of the line model with all of the options, so... what options does this one have?
The check engine light thing is something most cars do, it's one of the things you're supposed to check for when buying a used car, to make sure the check engine light hasn't been disconnected to hide a problem.
brilliantly described, ppl who make comments on tour choice in clothing Pmsl, you own everything your a successful businessman & yet try to slag u off over your clothing Pmsl. short but to the point vid nice one!!
fuck yeah I look forward to your videos everyday... you keep it real. I keep it real. it's nice to listen to someone on the same level. that is all. have a good day.
Honestly convertibles with a hard top is the best option. Soft tops can sometimes ruin the streamline look of a car. Kinda like the Huracan convertible for example
Rob knows how to please his audience :p Good on yah!
i like to pick at the dried up crap that accumulates around the opening of my shithole.
i think a shower might be useful, most people don't seem to have this issue

Lol this isn't Toyota, this is Ferrari. Scraps don't come out bro.
Flávio Coimbra what about the 1200 mile break in on the m3?
My California T had a break in period (owners manual specifies 1500 miles I believe) and when it was serviced the oil was filthy. Same engine as the 488, just different turbos.

I'd like to see that check engine light in my Ferrari 488 one day... That'll mean I actually got one!
Searching High And Low it's called a 488 spider
*typo
There's a guy a work named Ferreri but we always pronounce it as Ferrari.
That car has some crazy looking angles. Congrats Rob
wtf is with you....
Your videos seem like them old ass movies you'd watch in school
22Laxer22 *your
Mark McNulty fuck
yeah lol I get the same vibe
22Laxer22 yea doesn't even matter a ferrari is in the background, teacher cuts off the lights and im sleep
Rob, how do you compare this Ferrari to the nice truck that you sold recently?
can barely tell the difference between the two if I close my eyes.
😂😂😂😂😂😂
They both are inconvenient for groceries and get 2mpg. I'd say they are identical.
One being a light weight sports car with new technology and the other being a massive truck that has a manual transmission. Very bizarre that they feel the same!
Funniest youtube comment i've seen in a long time
So the Ferrari just assumes there is a problem until it proves itself otherwise.
That's how Ferrari spins !
+Eric Gudzinas actually sort of works like that on a lot of vehicles my Ram does the same.
Definitely aware of that, just got hassle Ferrari is all.
lmao
In Italy, a criminal is guilty until proven innocent. Thus, Ferrari assumes the same.
lets do that windscreen thing again...
I'll get the hammer
no baseball bat only...lol
lol subtle bumper to bumper warranty question. I like it
"big, baggy who gives a shits". lmao
yeah, fuck the car, its the big, baggy and who gives a shit, that makes it worthwile to watch,
i gave my cat a rimjob today
"trunk space,,, enough, you can fit a body in it." so thats how you get all that money
It's the only unit of measure worth worrying about, really
I'm Italian from North Jersey...

My favorite part of this channel is how down to earth you are, Rob. You really seem like someone a regular ol car guy could approach on the street.
Good explanations. I was hoping you would demonstrate how the top opens and closes in detail
Ozzstar same
he can't do that it triggers the check engine light. Lol
the motoman break in method always made a lot more sense to me than oem "recommendations"
Rob, thanks for sharing the car with us, great spec, enjoy the experience!
Your spec looks very nice, I love the light brown interior against the red exterior. Congrats on the car man :)
Hey Rob. Really glad to hear your answer to question 2. Cheers
This guy has a very cool disposition...someone I could twist a few with...congrats on the 488 dude...they are badass sweet.
I think you missed the "bumper to bumper warranty" joke
12799MaDeuce explain?
Doug Demuro's Aston Martin Bumper to bumper video
Auto journalist Doug Demuro bought a used Aston Martin with an unlimited mileage bumper to bumper warranty. the warranty was like $4k, but the car had tons of issues and he got over $6k in free repairs within two or three months. it's become a running joke to ask if someone's fancy new supercar has a bumper to bumper warranty, because most don't, but his used late 2000s Aston does.
Definitely missed that joke.
the more you know ;)

I like that you are savvy with your purchases.
As for break in: In 1990, I saw the first few 348 TB cars straight off the truck at Miller Motorcars in Greenwich CT.... After quick inspections, the guys from service took each one out onto route 1, SIDEWAYS with tire smoke....
I just got my 488, and I cannot switch the main screen from the RPM mode. Haven't taken it to Ferrari yet, but anything I can do from home to fix it?
what do you do for a living?
He doesn't actually own a 488, he's just fucking with you.
The main screen is always a tach, that's the most important thing in the car. You can use the buttons to toggle through the side screens.
Planning to get one just sold my 458 spider
Exactly. I own 3 la ferrari's. Planning to get my next one next week. Gonna get it in invisible colour like the others, love it.
That's a ballin car to have as your personal car!
Loving the new car, Rob. Can't wait to see you go on a cruise or something in it!
Does the range rover in the background work?
I would think so.
It would if it had a Carmax BUMPER TO BUMPER warranty.
I dont know if it would be unusual though. I heard they are notoriously crappy. Break down all the time and they depreciate quickly. I've never owned one though and I dont know if i want to.
It's a Range Rover, they're some of the most unreliable cars ever. Chances are - No.
ayyyy DougCar
Super speeders shirt just arrived. It looks pretty awesome.
Very Humble guy...Humble attitude
You answered my question about the wait, I feel honored.
I love these videos. Thanks for doing this Rob.

I would guess that same feature works on locking the keys in the car.
Thank you for answering my/ someone else similar question on if you are going to mod it.
This video was worth it just for the key in the trunk.
Sweet car man. Super excited for you. Anyone hating on your purchase, is just jealous.
Congrats man, I'm happy for you. Can't wait to be in your shoes one day.
He missed the joke on the bumper to bumper warranty
Yep. Big time lol.
Nice Q&A Rob, remember of the cooling down process, let the engine idle for a minute before shutting it off. Greetings.
A lot of modern cars have electric oil pumps that run for 15-30 seconds after you turn the car off, and an oil+water cooled ball bearing turbo isn't anywhere near as bad as old journal bearings for cooking when turned off.
thanks for the explanation on the CEL. Stays on a bit longer than usual.

stunning car Rob! looks lovely.
Rob that car is absolutely gorgeous wow!. Congrats man, cant take my eye off it lol
I love the high RPM sound of the Ferrari
Rob, congrats on the great car purchase. I was hoping that you would do a video about the optioning process and which options you selected and why.
mad repect for u and the channel. keep doing what you're doing. love the car btw!
so happy you speak your mind. Love it!

Great looking car !! Hope one day I would own a beauty such as yours
Nice full metal jacket reference Rob!
Loved the Full Metal Jacket reference!
I love your channel!
Awesome video. Thanks for answering my question.
I couldn't think of anything to comment so here are the instructions on how to make air.
Thank you for your time.
didnt know that about the CEL...thanks for the knowledge
It's a gorgeous car. It's a stupid car, just like the truck you hated, but I still like it. It's overpriced, impractical, but it's interesting. I love seeing the interpretation everyone has, for the ideal transportation.
my charger does the same thing with the trunk & key! it blew my mind!
I wish my RX8 did! Almost locked the key in the boot quite a few times.
Because Fiat
good point
Gonna have to test my BMW now
Hey Rob, what’s the ideal weather for you to drive it with top down? What was the coldest weather you’d ever drove any Ferrari?
That slick phone switch during the video of the check engine light
that trunk feature is really cool
full clear wrap might be a good idea.
nice haircut robbo
That carbon fiber front splitter is awesome
what a beauty, nice pick up
I'm not sure why you'd get a Huracan Spyder when this looks ten times better anyways
That's a really nice spec. Nice one
Does anyone else feel like we're back into late 70s early 80s styling now with the sharp lines and wedge shapes? not a complaint.
Thank god someone explained this
You should have gone with the Queen Family Truckster with wood paneling.
As said in your previous video, the first model years are the ones to get because Ferrari upsells you to get the top of the line model with all of the options, so... what options does this one have?
Over $100,000 worth of them.
Nice car!

saw you driving cross broad ave early this morning. nice car! sound good!
1:19 Full metal jacket reference....well played.Confetti

nice one!!
simple enough. Thanks Rob
Thats a really cool car. Thanks for sharing
Hahaha, I wonder who could've asked if it had a bumper to bumper warranty...
somebody who watches dough demuro.
Thoughts on a manual 360 modena? As far as reliability/ possible appreciation
Just glad you got the car in Spaghetti red.
Finally something my g37 and Ferrari have something have in common...trunk doesn't close with key
Lol the Full Metal Jacket reference. I like it :D
Thanks for this video. I was wondering why my F8’s CEL is lit for 3-5 secs. when I start it.
Very nice feature, at least 5 times in my life I have locked the keys in the trunk.
My chevy volt doesn't let me to lock the key inside anywhere.
fuck yeah I look forward to your videos everyday...
you keep it real. I keep it real.
it's nice to listen to someone on the same level.
that is all. have a good day.
hair cut looking fresh!
Honestly convertibles with a hard top is the best option. Soft tops can sometimes ruin the streamline look of a car. Kinda like the Huracan convertible for example
lmao @ the doug demuro reference "does it have a bumper to bumper warranty"
Congratulations!!! Awesome !!
