Northern Harrier - Sony FE 200-600mm (Birds in Flight)

- I wanted to test the new Sony FE 200-600mm in low light conditions to see how well the autofocus and tracking performed. I was especially curious if the lens would "hunt" for focus, like my old Sigma 150-600 Contemporary would do with birds in flight. I had a great time filming this Northern Harrier, and I hope to go back on a nicer day to get some better footage.

Hey everyone! I had a great time filming a pair of Harriers. Although I didn't get too many "WOW" photos, I was extremely impressed with the autofocus and tracking. Even when the Harriers would dip below the grassline, I was able to acquire focus immediately after it resurfaced, even in low light. It would also continue tracking it when they flew through groups of other birds that weren't too densely packed. I avoided birds in flight with my old lens, but now I will definitely be looking to do a lot more in-flight shots! Hope you enjoyed, and happy birding!
Thanks for this awesome video and letting us know how the lens performed. After waiting over a month, my Sony 200-600 shipped today and I am getting it tomorrow...can't wait. I too have the Sigma 150-600 Contemporary. It just does not work well with my AC-11 adapter on the Sony A9. It was somewhat ok on my Canon, but just cant focus fast enough and always searches just when a Raptor in flying by. In your other video you described what I have been experiencing with the Sigma perfectly. It is like you are constantly fighting with it to get focus. Thanks again..... really like your work.

In awe of this footage! hope you don't mind me asking how you got the footage so sharp and in focus?
I have the 200-600 and find it often misses focus and just hunts rather than tracking/locking on, always disappointing after a day of birding. Any advice would be very much appreciated as an aspiring wildlife videographer!

@@philipgowdy Tony Northrup did a nice review of Sony/Nikon/Sigma/Tamron long lenses on Nikon D500 and Sony A/9 and A6400. He also tried Sony A7 III and said it was "okay" but not quite as fast tracking and focus.

Great work , honestly, i could not get enough at First view and i watched about 2-3 Times. My question is, i am using sony 200-600mm with sony a6600 and most of the time unhappy with pictures taken at 6400 ISO. Could you share raw files so that i and others can compare low light Performances.

Very nice footage. So it tracks good with a7iii ? Let alone with a7r4 or a9.
Definitely tracks better than I thought it would, especially in low light. I feel like with the a9 it would be insane. I'm hoping to get my hands on an A7R4 to test it out even more

What steadyshot mode, on the lens, did you use? Also, what tracking mode? I haven’t done any video, but am testing out the 3 modes for BIF photography. Have you found one mode that you can use all the time?
I originally switched between 1 and 2, but ultimately stuck with 1. Reason being, the Harrier was actually soaring quite slowly, so I wasn't panning quick enough to benefit from having the lens set to the 2nd steadyshot. I always use AF-C, and Zone AF has been great for majority of what I do. For general shooting I'll always have the steadyshot set to the first setting, so that's your best bet all-around!
@@StefanoIaniro Thanks for replying! Have you tried/used any of the 'Tracking' settings? Such as 'tracking zone af' for birds in flight? What about using 'tracking small spot' for birds in the forest/bushes? I tried yesterday on some slowly swimming ducks, and had mixed results. Maybe if the duck started flying it would work better??
@@brookemiller7230 I tried them briefly a few months back but felt I was still getting better results with Zone. I'll have to revisit them next time I'm doing BIF to see if I still prefer Zone!

i have the 200-600mm G Sony + A7R3 too, are you satisfied with quality at 600mm?
I see you use rather hight iso at 600 for BIF, i limited iso to 1000 , 1/1200 max for slow birds , even focused, photo seems good at 20-30%, but at 100% it's very bad, and with highter ISO it's worth. Even on still birds at 600mm, f6.3, max ISO 200, at 100% image quality is not good.
So, i try to understand, is it my lens in particulary or is it a quality issue at 600mm with the Sony G 200-600mm?

Hey! I've been shooting a ton of images at 600 on the lens, and it looks great to me. A lot of my photos from my Ecuador videos were all taken at 600. I've heard a few people say their lens is soft at 600, so it could possibly be a lens issue. I would call Sony Support and try to troubleshoot it with them to see if it's a bad copy or something!

Huge difference! Especially if you're adapting the Sigma lens to your Sony. The Sony lens is definitely a huge upgrade in autofocus, sharpness, rendering, etc. I'll be selling my Sigma!
what focus area did you use focus and track BIF?
I used "Zone" for this entire shoot. Definitely my favorite all-around focus area. Works well for most situations.
@@StefanoIaniro I use only two areas: I have Zone like yourself on one back button and also have another back button set for flex spot tracking.
@@DanOhPhotography That's a good combo! I'll need to try out flex spot tracking a bit more. Right now my second go to is Center Point. When songbirds are in thicker foliage it's much easier to put them in the center of the frame and lock on with center point. I might add flex spot tracking to one of my custom function buttons!

Did you try to image the Harrier at higher iso ?
Yes! When I first got there I was pushing closer to 10,800 ISO. The photos I got were a little far away, so if I cropped them at all the quality wasn't too good, so I decided to leave them out of the video. It was still able to track the Harrier though, which was really cool!
@@StefanoIaniro IMHO 10800 is too high - tried and tested on 100-400. Wondering if you caught any images in 3200-4000 range. If not, try it, I think you will see a difference and imagery is not lacking in sharpness or noise.
@@egis7908 Yeah 10800 was really high hahaha. I just tried it out to see what it would look like. The photos taken in this video were all within 3200-6400 and I'm quite happy with the results. How do you like the 100-400?
@@StefanoIaniro The 100-400 is tack sharp. The lens offers a few advantages for landscape/wildlife photographers. It travels well due to size and weight. While its zoom mechanism is external, using a 1.4 TC along with it offers focal lengths of 560, which to me offers the best of both worlds.

Well, here’s what I don’t understand. On a full frame camera, at 600mm, a Northern Harrier in flight is pretty small.
On a crop body camera, say a Canon with a 1.6 crop factor, using a 400mm lens, the same photo of the BIF gives an image at 640mm.
400mm x 1.6 crop = 640mm. And I’m guessing a crop sensor with the same number of Mega pixels as a Sony full frame sensor,
crops better for the BIF, because the pixels are clustered closer together. All for half the price of the Sony 200-600mm combination.
Having a hard time justifying the upgrade... 🦅🦅🦅
Oh I hear you! There's definitely added benefits to shooting with a crop sensor camera. Depending what your shooting style is, it might not benefit to upgrade. For something like BIF, it's probably better to use that 400mm on a crop body, it'll be lighter and easier to track your subject, and you'll have better AF coverage. I have noticed a difference in my forest bird photography since switching to Full-Frame. It's a lot more reliable at those higher ISOs. Were you thinking of making a switch?
Stefano Ianiro Wildlife Been seriously looking at the Sony A7iii 200-600mm combination. The camera and lens get great reviews.
I currently shoot wildlife with a Canon 80D 100-400mm iii and the Canon 1.4x Extender iii at 896mm at f/8 with 27 AF points.
400mm x 1.6 crop x 1.4 extender = 896mm. Getting some great results at 3,200 shutter, f/10, and auto ISO. An upgrade to the new Canon 90D with its 32Mp sensor and 10 FPS, looks to be a better fit with my current investment in Canon lenses. Been using the Canon 70-200mm f2.8 ii for low light challenges, especially hummingbirds. Again excellent results. Did consider the Canon 5D Mark IV as a full frame alternative but the Sony A7iii mirrorless camera really looked better. But it’s the crop factor versus full frame that really got me.
Loosing that 1.6x extra reach is a big hit, when you are primarily shooting wildlife that is always very far away. Most people I know, who shoot BIF like eagles, on a full frame camera, are using a 2x extender, to get the reach of a crop body.
Stefano Ianiro Wildlife i have a a6400 and in comparison with the a7iii it’s around 1 to 2 steps of iso difference. Meaning going from 3200 to 6400 in terms of iso it’s a lot difference, specially in low lights situation. In birdwatching situations i dunno, but i guess the moment is more
important than the noise ... Also something that matter, how much clean is your image when you crop it...
@@josephkarpinski9586 Those are great lenses for Canon, I'm curious to see how the 90D performs. I used to have the Canon 70D, and really enjoyed that camera. I would suggest renting the Sony setup you're interested in. Take a week to test it out and see if you like it, before buying or selling all your gear. From what you've said, it looks like your BIF setup right now seems to be a better option!
@@juancatalan3095 Yeah noise isn't a huge issue. Like you said, I'd take a noisy image with great action any day. I know a lot of Photographers who are incredible with Noise Reduction in post processing. So it doesn't really matter what they shoot at haha
