I am viewing this after you mentioned it in your latest video.
Like you, I cannot exactly say that I LIKED this book, because the meat-packing industry at that time was so gross. I CAN say that the book was (and IS) important. I liken the treatment of the immigrants at the time to the treatment of slaves. The rich and powerful still treat humans as objects. I think part of the message is that in a Capitalistic society is that Wealth sets Class which is more important than ethnicity or race. Rich people do not care who works for them, as long as the labor is cheap. (I recommend _The Grapes of Wrath_ as a follow up). Any book written at that time should be judged by the standards at that time, not by today's standards. It is not going to stand up to today's standards (most books don't).
The criminal justice and political climate back then seems so corrupt, but I think that it is just as bad as today, but they are just more creative in hiding the corruption. Offshore accounts, stocks, insider trading, and using spouses / relatives, and political donations is just scratching the surface.
Stereotyping anybody by any standard is flawed. People are individuals, and one size does not fit all. When people label you a white supremist, they should be considering if the ancestor was one of the factory bosses, or one of these white immigrants working as a day laborer in the meat-packing industry. Not exactly the same slice of white bread; not even the same loaf.
As someone who has researched his genealogy, this is impactful because one of my ancestors was Eastern European / Slavic who immigrated in 1905 and worked in the meat-packing industry (Buffalo, not Chicago). Hits close to home what they had to endure.

Fantastic comment! My ancestors immigrated to America too, after WWI, one side from Germany and the other from Lithuania - which was one of the reasons I was interested in reading this book. It's rare finding characters in novels from Lithuania. The one thing that really stuck out for me while reading this is the situation currently going on in America with illegal immigration. Back when the European and Slavic immigrates were flocking to this country, they were doing so to find work and a better life for their families. This book demonstrates the strong work ethic of the immigrant worker. When you compare it to what's going on today, well. Ironically, a lot of the problem {today} stems from big government!

There were a lot of great writers from that time period thqt pointed out inequities. A friend of mine wrote an essay on Ayn Rand's "Anthem" in our last edition of "An Unexpected Journal" (anunexpectedjournal.com)

Was it Jason Monroe? What an AWESOME journal!!! Thank you so much for linking it. The only book I read by Ayn Rand is Atlas Shrugged, but it was a powerful experience. Thank you for commenting! :)

@@RaisedtoWalkTV that is so, so cool! I'm always looking for journals like that. I really like VII from the Wade center at Wheaton College. Thank you again! I will definitely check out some of these articles.

your book cover designs are really bad. Turkish publishers are better than you in this regard. In addition, the book is very good in terms of subject matter and everyone should read it.
