The HEAVIEST TRAIN 491 has pulled in 60+ YEARS!

  • Setting up for the Colorado Crossings event involved a pretty neat move that I captured on video. 491 plus 11 cars, up the 3.5% grade, in a curve. Dusty had to have it wide open briefly to get things rolling.

I saw the engine shift right away by watching closely the patch of gravel by the signal post, she kicks over a good inch or two which indeed must feel profound when it happens under your own ass. Very neat to see an old engine like this really give her all and work at maximum capacity, I'm sure all the men who made her are smiling wherever they may be.

Also noticed that every time that Dusty applied the air brakes that he signaled with two whistle blows- was that standard practice for all railroads during steam days, or just the D&RGW?

Can't wait for the next RRO vid, been building a new layout with a friend on their save, and can say that we have a 3% line running from the freight depot all the way to the coal mine. It goes around the mountain peninsula to the south of the depot, and over the gap that you and Kan's switchback starts. In total the trip to the coal mine takes 5 mins. or so, and my friend did the trip with 20 cars of beams at 17 mph.
