Friends - I’ve owned my since 2007…I’ve maintained and made modifications to her. First off - people hate on Maserati because they know nothing about the brand and they’ve never owned a well maintained one. If you’re looking to own an amazing machine like this - don’t be cheap and cheap out on repairs etc….do it right and do it right the first time. Yes, these cars are super expensive…but they’re magnificent….I also have a Bentley Turbo R, like the blue one parked next to it…those are great cars as well. If you guys well maintained one - these cars are very reliable…don’t knock the brand because you’re too cheap to maintain this car..of course it won’t work if you don’t drive or maintain it…for all you haters…go buy a good one, then come back and tell us your real experience…these cars are diamonds in the rough…buy one, don’t be cheap and be prepared to never wipe the smile off your face.
@@ChrisPatrick-q6k I thought I, too, could hear that noise, and I once walked away from a 4200 because of it. Those engines suffer from Camshaft Variator issues, which can sometimes lead to that ticking noise. I'm not sure the oil pressure is the real problem-if the car starts, idles, and was driven from London, it must have oil pressure; otherwise, it would grenade itself once it got past the Watford gap. It's probably just the sensor.
What a nice video about a good set of people from Mattea, to Paul at Supercar Tech, to Ash at E&S - all seem like the kind of people I’d like to buy cars from! Looking forward to the updates!
Got one the facelift as yours , had it 11 Years used as weekender and sometimes a daily , larini fitted , only issue is sticky buttons , amazing cheap sound track 👍
So the previous owner drove it 300 miles with no oil pressure? and it was only noticed when the specialist looked at it? the engine sounds ok, so must have oil pressure.
YES!! Well done Joel, the 4200 is a fantastic, under rated car. I have owned mine for nearly 5 years now and absolutely love it. Great performance, flies under the radar but with that typical Italian flair and of course the masterpiece - the Ferrari derived M138 engine and soundtrack. On initial impressions, I would check the oil pressure wiring and sensor before tearing into the engine. Good luck!
If it really has no oil pressure and has been driven 300 miles the engine is toast. But the fact that it doesn’t sound like it’s toast suggests that there is an issue with the gauge / sender. There may well be a problem with the pump too but it must have more oil pressure than the gauge suggests.
With no oil being driven around the engine it sounded really noisy to me, i guess the lack of oil is the reason, lets hope the pump is the only issue !!!!
I think the oil accumulator under the intake may be causing that extended rattle. The gauges on these are notorious for issues but it's difficult to say for sure. If it's the oil/water pump the spline has probably rusted. The oil pump side itself is pretty bullet proof, the water pump side can leak and Rust out the spline. Unfortunately, you can't tell if it's rusted out unless you pull the pump.
The "Gold Standard" test for diagnosing oil pressure would be to replace the oil sensor with your own oil pressure gauge and check it that way. I am assuming the supercar specialist did this (ie didn't just rely on the gauge). If you can add value to the car, its not a wasted purchase. Even if you lose money, that's fair enough, you're enjoying the car and we are enjoying the RUclips content.
@@itsjoel You'd have certainly got less comments but they might help pay for the next steps, if there are any realistic ones. RUclips and all that! I once had an oil line go on a Lancia Montecarlo (custom ext oil cooler) about a mile from home and risked it with no further issues. A friend also had a Hyundai Getz that had a semi-blocked pickup and drove it at least 50 miles. You could certainly tell when it was blocked due to knock but amazingly it would come good from time to time and run quietly. After dropping the sump and checking a few bearing shells we decided to trust to luck and it ran at least another 30k without issue. Of course that's not a sportscar but when you think about it, smaller engines often work harder in the real world just getting from A to B. Good luck.
Why didnt you get Pail in Edinburgh to change the oil pump? It must have cost quite a lot to trailer it to Ashley. I would expect the labour rates to be less in Scotland 😅
Duff oil pressure sender! or Gauge! I guess they have been eliminated from the issue. Having owned 20 plus Italian cars mainly Alfa and Lancia id trust your ears before electrics and gauges
Given the costs associated with travelling to Scotland to only have to fly home again and then the cost of transporting the car.... Why didn't you just authorise the garage in Scotland to fix it? Surly that would have covered a good chunk of the labour cost?
And where is the YT content in that? If he wanted to be sensible he would not have bought a Maserati to begin with but again, there's no clicks in sensible. And all that aside were talking about Joel here.
@@SoWereDoingWhatNow Could have quite easily made content on doing it the sensible way... although I'm not sure my point was to be 'sensible' more 'logical,' as, to your point, he bought a Maserati, so he needs his head reading anyway.
I have lost count of the number of pressure sensors and switches which have failed on me. The only way to know os to swap the sensor or of very expensive then connect a mechanical gauge to the port. Undortunately the sensor is below the inlet manifold so it is a few hours work just to check if just the sensor. The part itself is inexpensive, or should be. Fingers crossed as no oil pressure should have had the bearings knocking, but it was smooth.
Bought mine with 22k on the clock - Meridian Modena agreed to replace the clutch FOC within 6 months - sold three and a half years later - came across it in a car park a couple of years after that and spoke to the then owner - clutch went after he had owned it a few months - £6,500 at a main dealer
Maserati 4200's are probably my favourite of Maserati. Beautiful cars. The engines looks incredible and sound like a proper Ferrari.... Joel I think your going to have a lot of fun in this dude! Looking forward to the Christmas special ❤

Surely during your phone discussion the mechanic in Scotland would you have advised you not to bother flying up and that he’d fix it? Therefore you could have saved money on a) the flight b) the cost of trailering it c) the lower mechanic cost in Scotland vs south England?
Perfectly normal, they read 17mph at standstill. There's a needle sat there so the dial sits on it. Something to do with Maserati wanting it to look like it's in motion when stationary 🙃

Probably just the oil pressure sensor or wiring is faulty, car sounds healthy for having zero oil pressure.
