  • Uptime and Downtime are fairly self explanatory as far as concepts go. Ability to attack the boss, or inability to. But there's a lot more that goes into it, and a lot of ways it leads back to improving your play at a base level. So while this topic can go really deep, let's introduce a few concepts to think about.

    Honestly, I have used all your job videos to start and even fine tune if I feel like something feels off as I am playing. I direct everyone who plays to check out your videos, especially if they are asking about a new class they decided to play. Your mechanics video is one that greatly improved my confidence with new encounters. The principles in your videos are good not just for FFXIVbut any MMORPG. I appreciate that you start from the beginning/simple as those are the things that will help you master your play. To be able to break it down so well demonstrates how you have mastered your art of tutorial and gameplay. Thank you for your work.

    I feel like uptime and related subjects are actually kind of high level stuff in ffxiv because you need to understand a few key koncepts and be able to plan ahead. It's not like the game tells you that "this is your pixel, there are many like it but this one is yours" but I feel that the planning part is key in this. Planning requires you to know and to understand how to approach fights. For example I see a lot of people just stop casting because they are afraid to die and do not understand that the goal is to do mechanics and damage at the same time, not do one or the other.
    I don't think it's an issue of people not understanding that potencies are weaker for melee ranged attacks but that they are preoccupied with not doing wrong (dying etc) instead of trying to do things right. Anxiety would tell us that we risk more with trying to do right than to focus on not doing wrong but it's usually the other way around.

    I adore the way monk plays and I'm not the kind of person that thinks it needs a ranged attack (even if it would be useful for niche things like pulling specific enemies out of a group in some places outside of regular duties like PotD or whatever), but I do think it's a pretty bad way to go about things to say that people who say monk doesn't have a ranged option are "almost guaranteed to be bad players". They don't have a ranged option. They *do* have a *disengage* option, and for the vast majority of situations it gets the job done where *specifically* keeping melee uptime on a boss is concerned, but that does not a ranged option make.
    I like the video overall (and most everything you make), and think this is a super useful video for newer players, but that was just a really weird way to go about that imo even if I get the point you were going for. I especially think as much since most of the time I see people talk about wanting a ranged monk attack it's because they think a ki blast or something would just be cool, or for niche situations like I mentioned above. Love ya content and hope you keep it up as always, I just don't like the idea of people being assumed bad for acknowledging reality

    • @WeskAlber

    • @CardinalSpirit
      @CardinalSpirit 6 месяцев назад +8

      @@WeskAlber I feel like you're missing my point. You use your ranged attacks on other jobs when you need to disengage in a bossfight sure, but SSS simply isn't a ranged attack and cannot fill all the roles of one. They are not one and the same when there are other things ranged attacks are used for, even if mostly outside of the context of an ongoing fight where you can map out your uptime. I even specified that I mostly see people ask for a ranged attack because they think it would be cool, and one of the niche things it would be useful for for that very reason.
      If I said "sad monk doesn't have a ranged attack" and someone replied "you have SSS" then we're not having the same conversation and it would be insane for them to think I'm bad for that. If I said "sad monk doesn't have something to deal with moving away from the boss for a GCD" and they replied the same thing, they'd be good to go and totally justified to think I'm just playing the game wrong
      I don't think monk *needs* a ranged attack since not having one makes for the most satisfying and fun experience of fishing for uptime strategically using SSS and thunderclap for me personally. I still think that calling people bad for recognising that the class does not have a ranged attack is just the wrong way to go about things

    While the entirety of the video is correct and very helpful, especially some of the Six Sided Star comments, which I constantly hear people calling useless, I do feel like sometimes people tend to forget or ignore that latency can be and is a major frustration for those of us outside of locations with dedicated servers. I play at 170ms, if I tried half of the late dodges shown in this video I'd have been hit 100% of the time due to how bad snapshotting is for me. Of course latency isn't a complete dismissal of the points elevated on this video and I understand that it isn't the reason why the video was made in the first place, however if I personally tried to bob SSS's back and forth and tried to dodge last second I would most likely get hit more often than not, that doesn't mean I am a bad player but that I have a comparative handicap at all times. I have personally learned to live with it and pick my battles carefully so to speak, I'd rather get two ranged attacks in instead of risking a potential death. Piercing Talon is 150 potency but a death is 0 potency and a debuff, or a full party wipe depending on the encounter, I personally believe at least a passing mention to latency would've been welcome. Regardless of my rant this was a very good informative video for most of the playerbase, those of us in regions without dedicated servers unfortunately can only nod in agreement and cry a little from the safety of our lost uptime.

    • @WeskAlber
      @WeskAlber  6 месяцев назад

      Of course latency plays a big part, but also there's very much a limit that it goes from a reason to an excuse. One Ult raider I know has similar levels of ping. It's harder, but far from impossible. Most play around 100 and 170 isn't that much higher in terms of overall time.
      You still need to try and learn your limits as a high ping player. And if you really can't hit it, then you learn by doing. If you have 0 vulns, you're unlikely to die to most things.

    • @JelisW
      @JelisW 6 месяцев назад +2

      @@WeskAlber @ribas3814 Speaking as someone who plays on NA from SEA with a ping hovering around 400 and raids savage--the latency thing just means you shift your whole dodge window slightly earlier. What you see on your screen is constantly slightly behind what the server registers, so while this means you need to disengage slightly earlier than what you see Wesk doing, it means you can also _re-engage_ earlier than what you see him doing. The amount of time you need for the dodge is exactly the same; it's just a matter of getting a feel for _when_ to do the dodge. I'll regularly be dodging back in a tiny split second _before_ the orange disappears on my screen, and I still don't get hit. Also stuff like dodges on P12S wing cleaves: I can actually step into the side being cleaved a split second before the cleave animation even begins and not get hit.
      ...also, having high ping often means you get nigh-infinite slidecast lol
      The real issue is if you have latency that is _unstable_ , because then you can't learn consistent dodge windows. It's why I raid with a VPN despite said VPN not doing a thing to lower my ping overall: it keeps my ping extremely _consistent_

    1) I love you used p9n because it has 3-4 players taking damage so the healers need to use AOE heals anyway so it's TOTALLY FINE to stand in 1 of the fires if it means you keep uptime.
    2) everyone talks about max melee but this leads some people to think they ALWAYS need to be max melee or outside of the boss hitbox. This isn't the case, positionals work inside the hitbox just as much as outside, and sticking with the other DPS means easier to cure 3, healing waltz, baiting enemy AOEs all in 1 spot instead of all over Narnia

      @WeskAlber  6 месяцев назад +2

      BLM falls very much into specifically BLM only issues. It becomes about planning out your movement as you learn a fight, dedicating as many movement tools as you need to it. Slidecasting only gets you so far with BLM.

    • @JelisW
      @JelisW 6 месяцев назад

      Hilariously, with BLM, the advice is going to be most like SMN, who seems to be on the extreme opposite end of the spectrum. But it's true: being able to maintain 100% uptime on both jobs is more about knowing the fight very well and arranging your entire rotation around aligning your instant-cast options with times where you _need_ to move. And so in a fight you _don't_ know reasonably well, it's pretty much impossible to have full uptime because inevitably there will be a point where they NEED to move while all you have are hard casts.
      In the case of BLM, it also means that sometimes you have no choice but to misalign your leylines with party buffs, because 2min comes at a point where there is no possible way to plant and stay still.
      And sometimes, even with all that, they still have to drop a GCD or two if they don't have a fixed static who's willing to let them chad a melee spot or do BLM-relative adjustments.
      If trying to just teach the skill of adjusting rotation around fight, I'd advise just repeatedly queue for a handful of level 90 normal raids that they know well, and as they start to memorize the sequence of mechs, to start to preempt them and adjust rotation to match.
      Past that point, if trying to improve uptime on a particular high end fight, the advice would be "ask other BLMs" =P

      Eh? PLD also pulls with holy spirit. It's part of the listed opener and everything, is higher potency, and makes it easier to position the boss center. Only time I pull with lob is if I need the boss to stay all the way at the north edge and so need to be sprinting in. That is... pretty much never though.
      But yes, it's very sad any time I see a PLD disengage to timbuktu and then stand there lobbing for like 4-5 times in a row. If you have to disengage, but can stand still upon disengaging, then cast/slidecast. The devs very deliberately didn't raise the potency of PLD's Shield Lob to match the other tanks' ranged throws and left it at a pathetic 100 potency _becase we have a 330 potency spell_

You lose nothing. If you can't cross the space between you and boss in 2.5 seconds, then you need to position yourself closer for the cast and also learn to slidecast, is all.
