This is sad I just come across your channel, this is your last upload. I really appreciate your pieces so hard, hardly enough I feel so inspired with growing my skills just like yours cause I got all the time at this juncture. Again, one of your videos has snapped me out of a lazy artist slump. I've been painting for projects all week and woke up tired this morning and thought, "Maybe I'll just take a break and play video games or something." After watching this, I think I'll do a study :D
Youre a HUGE inspiration for me and reason I got into oils! I had never considered the medium after some bad artists relationships but through our videos I'd never felt so compelled to make an oil piece. And ever since then I've been painting with the medium for about 3 years now and I love it. Now I'm finding myself back at your channel and remembering that, I just wanted to say thank you! And I really hope you make more videos soon, I adore our work I've never had an artist inspire me so much

Liquin is cool. It's an alkyd resin medium with fast drying time, but I'm not in a rush when I'm painting so I like to experiment with my own recipes for the mediums I use. I usually make different combinations of stand oil, sun-thicken linseed oil, venice turp, oil of spike, dammar etc, and they all give interesting results. One downside it's the drying time which can take a long time, but if I need faster drying times I play with black oil or cobalt siccative. This is purely optional and you can get very interesting effects using these mediums, but I find the whole process a lot of fun and interesting.
I love all of your videos they're so calming to watch too, I'd love a video on skin tones. I struggle with saturation and shadows personally. You've also inspired me to take my own reference photos which really helps and i got back into using liquin after using walnut oil for so long.
I had never considered sketching out a painting like this before painting it. Thanks for the inspiration!

Thank you! I plan on doing more digital stuff soon- the recent Windows 10 update that messed with tablet styluses got the better of a recent recording, but it's since been patched, so I'll try again. :)
Yeah I have some problems too since the update... But anyway, I have a question for you and I would very interested about your opinion (I will try to formulate it clearly I'm from france and my english is sometimes not very accurate ). I'd like to have your thoughts about a certain period of the life of a young artist when you are not a beginner anymore and aiming to become a professional but you are not quite there yet. What do you think are the most important things in terms of learning, organization( schedule, etc...) and state of mind during this stage ?

Such a wonderful study ! Would you or have you ever done a show with just studies? If not what do you usually do with all your studies?
Great study and calm voice in the video. I think having a study is really excellent idea to scale up to a larger painting. I know I personally massively struggled with a sky scene in a massive painting because I wasn't super familiar with this type of landscape. Definitely, scaling up or doing a lot of smaller practice paintings is a better way to work and learn. If you have sometime, I would appreciate feedback on any of my painting demos. Thanks!

Hey Cynthia, how do you achieve such natural looking palettes in your digital paintings? Mine always lean towards too garish or too muddy and washed out. Love the videos! Keep them coming!!!!!
Hi Cynthia, that big easel was intriguing. What's the largest size painting you've ever worked on? Do you have to think about anything differently when you go big? I've found it difficult to work at different scales (bigger or smaller), especially when painting figures. Thanks for sharing your videos!
Good question! I think the largest piece I've done in recent memory was 24 x 36 inches. I've never worked very large due to space constraints, since most of my work spaces for the past 20 years have been small bedrooms or side-rooms in apartments. There are certainly some differences in frequency of detail to consider that don't translate 1:1 between sizes. For example, if I just scaled up the size of my brushes and used the same number or density of brushstrokes on a face at a much bigger size, it might look unfinished. There's also a big difference between suggestion and tight rendering, and that's probably worth a demo in itself at some point.
The continuum between "unfinished" and "over-rendered" is something I grapple with all the time. A demo about that would be amazing! To me, it feels like a weird intersection of my perception of the subject filtered through the size of the rendering and the texture of the surface.
I've mostly worked around 18 x 24 inches, and lately I've felt my compositions have been a little cramped. Maybe I'll try stepping up in size in gradual increments just to get a feel for it. Thanks!

I also have a question that has been nagging me for a long time: How do you start enjoying the process and subject matter of your work? Also, tied directly with the subject matter part, how do you find your unique way of interpreting themes or your own artistic voice? I always get so bogged down on the particulars of making the narrative work, composition serving the piece etc. that the entire process starts to feel like a chore and I get very detached from my work and initial idea.

Why do I get periods where I can paint and enjoy it and feel inspired, but I have many more periods where I dislike my work, feel unmotivated and uninspired. The last time I felt I truly enjoyed painting each day was during art school. I get wrapped up looking for inspiration, I'd join a class but I suffer from a certain type of arthritis & have not learned to drive yet, So my pain meds & pain makes things harder. But I've got to get working & treating my work as a full-time job, Hoping to sell work for. PS those hardboards are perfect for studies. I'd love to have your talent in both Photoshop & your studies in paint. Photoshop seems like a great way of sketching ideas down, but id have to learn to use P.S. Love to see your large work too. Is a lot of your work done by imagination? I love it.
I think your work is very inspiring and your videos always make my day! But have you considered uploading the music you use in your videos somewhere? Like soundcloud or youtube, I'd love to hear more. There is just something in it that makes me very relaxed and calm.

This was a great video and you got really nice questions! I often get asked why don't I specialize in one thing(characters, environments, illustrations) and really it's because I fear stagnating. I want to keep challenging myself so I don't stay in "good enough" mode. Many artists get comfortable in that mode and more power to them but I can't see myself doing that and being happy haha. Challenges keeps us on our toes and help us grow. At least it does for me.
I'm not sure if anyone has asked before but I have a question for you if you don't mind. I'm at the stage where I believe I'm ready to show my portfolio to people but I have terrible social anxiety. Has social anxiety ever caused you to freeze up or keep you from responding to big clients? If so, what did you do to overcome it?

Hello! Thank you so much for your insightful videos, I always look forward to seeing them. I have a question regarding style versus the work you want to do as a career. What do you do if you feel your voice or your art style doesn't exactly "fit" the style of your goal job or career? For example, a lot of fantasy illustration for tabletop gaming tend to be artists that are highly realistic. Say one's style is close, but maybe rather than being 100% realism, the art is more semi-realistic with a stylized slant. Should you conform to what the other artists in the field are doing and convert to realism, or should you try to stay true to your voice and bring something different to the table? How likely would a semi-realistic artist be to get a job for a company known for their highly realistic artists?
