  • Thinking about living in Costa Rica? Well, at some point you will consider buying a car or other, 'need to get around' vehicle', I did. After 18 years I finally bought a much needed car.... for business really, I still ride my bike around town. Every year in Costa Rica, you need to get your car inspected (vehicle inspections). The inspections happen at a place called Dekra which used to be known as Retive until the former bought out the latter. Dekra inspects everything- brakes, headlights, blinkers, windshield wipers, exhaust, tire pressure just to name a few. You can have a few 'dings' and still pass but if you don't pass you have to do it again. It's about $18.00 each time. Not really a cost thing, mostly a time thing since Dekra is about an hour away from me in the Tico town of Ciudad Quesada. You can schedule your appointment on the internet-
    book.dekra.io/...
Anyway, I had to go. And Travel Costa Rica NOW's, Medical/Dental guru and friend Johnny went with me. I feel because he sold me the car he was obligated lol. And honestly, I wouldn't have been able to do this one without a little help.... my spanish is already bad enough without trying to hear someone shouting from below my car to rev the engine more, yikes. So, if you have bought a car in Costa Rica but have never been through the Dekra experience, this video, 'Car Inspection in Costa Rica 🚘 a drive thru - FUN TIMES!' will help to get a little idea of what you'll be going through. I think we had a great time. ENjoY!

Took my car through by myself with my limited Spanish. Failed on a frame weld. Got it fixed and came back. I was so surprised how well the system worked. Right from scheduling the appointment to coming back for the reinspection...¡un tramite funcional!

I’m totally amazed at how you’re supposed to have these inspections, and so many cars and motorcycles don’t have lights, bald tires , I could go on and on, on the road.

A lot of people don’t do retieve and they risk getting caught. That’s why they have groups on WhatsApp to tell everyone where the transito and police have checkpoints.

This used to be an every other year ritual when I lived in LA. In Florida for 20 years and never required. Now that I drive Tesla, I wonder how that works out, even in Costa Rica. After a long absence, I did notice Costa Rican's upped their car game. After a long absence, I did notice CR is pushing and promoting being a leader in being carbon neutral in the near future. This is a lead they'll have to follow unless Franklin Chang's idea is viable. In the meantime, petro is 22% higher than free markets. ..... At least CR is trying. I used to take public buses in CR with cute nicknames that fumed awfully.

This is not much diff than my state in the u.s. car inspection, fees, if it doesn't pass you get it fixed and get it inspected again, for a fee. Sticker in window good for a year... if you drive off and your muffler falls off (or whatever else got inspected), you can drive it like that until the next year when inspection is due again. The state uses that money to pay for roads, bridges, etc. repairs
