Schrecksee Hike 2024

We did a few hikes in August, but Schrecksee really stood out!
For me it is the most beautiful hike in Bavarian Alps and you get awarded with a refreshing dip in cool water. How much better can it get?
About the Hike 🏔
Time from the parking to the lake: 3h30m (with a fairly strong pace)
Time from Trailhead (Wasserkraftwerk) to the lake: 2h45m (6km)
Time back: 2.5h
Elevation: 825m - 1813m (988m)
Parking spot: "Auf der Höh"
Parking price: 4h - 8€, whole day until closing 22h - 10€ (last updated August 2024)
Hints: Enough water, sun cream, cap and good hiking shoes
Schrecksee is located in Bad Hindelang in German side of Alps, very close to the border with Austria.
We started our drive from Munich in the early morning to reach the parking around 8am and we took one of the last places, so it's definitely good to be there early, since the parking is not that big and this hike is quite popular.
From the parking you can either take the bus that drops you at the Wasserkraftwerk and that's where the hiking begins, or you can simply walk there and admire the surrounding mountains (about 45 minutes longer)
Way up is just so beautiful and the scenery changes every 10 - 20 minutes. The beginning is the most challenging part in my opinion as you go through the woods being the steepest part of the hike. When you are out of the woods there comes a wonderful plateau and then again the steep rocky part before you reach the green grass oasis. There are cows by the lake and they add to the scenery.
Water can be quite cool, but after such a hike you will enjoy the dip. Since we didn't bring enough water, we refilled our bottle at one of the streams close to the top and had no issues drinking it.
All in all I can only recommend doing this hike!
