I live in a mostly spanish speaking area in south Texas. As an older white guy I'm not sure I can pick this up but I want to. I watched a few of your videos and decided to go to your first one and go through all of them. I am a teacher and most of my students are from Mexico or are Mexican and I'd like to be better at communicating with them so that they can get more out of my courses. I did what you said and changed the language on my phone and also downloaded a book I am familiar with in spanish. Hope old dogs can learn new tricks. God bless.

    Hola,
I've recently gotten into your channel and I think you do a great job. Since I'm blind, I found new, interesting ways to adapt for me, which is basicaly audio based language learning.
I started to learn Spanish from youtube afew years ago, but because I was lazy and burned out, I gave up. I chose a Spanish teacher on Italki the last week (a teacher is a great way of pushing towards the motivation for me) and I can say now I'm getting back on the track.
Even if I have latin American friends, this is the way that I found out to be the most appealing for me, to find a teacher and alternate the grammar lessons etc with youtube videos.
Thank you so much for doing this channel; your way of speaking is tremendously clear, beautiful and easy to understand.
I hope to receive an answer in Spanish, to be completely honest.
    Adiós!

This is a very good video about how to learn and acquire a language. She emphasizes the 2 inputs;listening and reading, as well the outputs;speaking and writing. Repetition is key. I am finding as an older adult learner of Spanish that I must repeat the listening and reading more times than I imagined. I thought 5 or 10 times would be enough. No, for me it’s more like 100+ (For encouragement, I now try to imagine how many times a child hears or reads the same words and phrases in their native language.) She says in this video to repeat until you are bored or tired of it. I agree and would add that you need repeat “until you are bored” for many, many days. Then go back and repeat again days, weeks and even months later. I have found that children’s books are excellent source for reading. For example the “Junie B. Jones” series of books contain many common words and phrases. Also, the “Judy Blume” books are very good. She describes in this video that she read and reread several books like these. It is important to read them many times. I have found these in both English and Spanish in my local library.

Spanish After Hours that was bad wording by me. I meant that before watching this video I had heard about watching the same thing multiple times and that whole technique but never really understood why you would want to watch the same thing so many times instead going for variety but your video helped me understand why and I ended up trying it out today with a french video. It was great to be able to understand a full 5 minute natively spoken french video and quite motivational. Secondly your speaking speed was perfect in the video, dunno about you but I myself am not a fan of people who don't cut to the chase and do really slow paced videos. Sorry for the bad wording again, keep up the hard work please 😁

I've actually noticed that ,13:46 . I'm making small mistakes in English as I get better at French. I only listen to French radio now , no English at all. I'm moving to Quebec City in future and will NEED French , not English , so It's maybe not a bad thing ! Sadly , Spanish for me is just a side study because too much of it interferes with my French vocabulary . Your channel is my last link with Spanish . Maybe some day I will pursue It also with as much intensity as I study my French .

Hello! I found your channel by chance so I like it because I want to teach Spanish in the future and your videos give me ideas, Yo hablo español y me gustan los idiomas, sé italiano, portugués e inglés y estoy estudiando catalán y francés. Bueno, tus consejos están muy bien, una forma que yo hago es ver series o podcast sin subtítulos y después los veo una segunda vez con subtítulos en el idioma que estoy aprendiendo. Buen trabajo!!! Saludos!!!👌

I’ve mentioned my thanks for your videos before but thanks again. Your channel is a wonderful addition to my learning quest. Another source I might suggest for other beginners, like me, are the PEPPA PIG cartoons that are dubbed in Spanish. They are short, have lots of contextual cues and easy dialog plus a limited, somewhat predictable vocabulary set.

For the listening practice, I'm doing exactly what you are suggesting. I've downloaded a lot of MP3 files out of RUclips channels, most of them are between 10 to 30 minutes. And then I listen to them again and again. Once I get bored, I move on to the next one.
I'm following another "comprehensible input" Spanish channel called "Dreaming Spanish" where Pablo suggests just listening and delay reading and speaking to a much later time. He says the speaking will come natually later. And by delaying reading and speaking, you'll have a better accent which is closer to native. What do you think about this?
He has a blog entry named "Dreaming Languages - 2 Kinds of Foreign Accent? What?" I'd love to know your opinion on it.

I also do the file downloading and listen to them until I get bored!! Each time I listen to it I understand more and more, so it's pretty helpful!! :)
As for delaying reading and speaking, with reading I agree! Specially if the alfabet is different, it's much easier to read if you already know what the words mean! As for speaking, I would say definitely get a language partner, and have them describe pictures to you! Little by little you start asking questions about the words or the pictures (this is what I did!) And after a few months we transitioned very naturally into a frankenstein kind of speaking!! hahah

Thank you for your tips! An English nugget for you, it is hanged, not hung. A very common mistake among native English speakers :P
