In English 'the beach' means the sand itself. So if you say someone is 'on the beach' it means they are standing on the sand. If you say they're 'at the beach' it means they're in the general area of the sand and may be on the sand, or on the boardwalk, or even in the parking lot. If you say they are 'in the beach' it means under the sand. To us, 'in the beach' means 'within the sand.' In this instance 'in' has a similar meaning to 'surrounded by.' Hope that helps.
I'm not a native English speaker but if you can replace "in" with "inside", it's "in", if not, it's "on". So "she's in the hotel" or "she's on the hotel's roof" :) In any case, these are great videos!😊
"In the beach" really just sounds like nonsense to me. I wouldn't assume someone was under the sand if you said that, I'd definitely be asking for clarification. "On the beach" sounds less weird, but I can't really imagine using that either.
@@derekschultz7807 You could say "We have a house on the beach." Or "there's a cafe on the beach."
You are too funny! I like your videos! Regarding your question ... He is (on) the beach, unless he is a gopher and burrowing (in) the sand, then he would be (in) the beach.
Thank you so much for this video and all your other ones 💜 you are so helpful!
"On the beach" is the correct choice, but it is a weird phrase in English (why must English have so many exceptions to its rules 😭). It is unusual because usually, a person's location within a generic/unspecific area is "in" or "at". In fact, "at the beach" is used more often than "on the beach".
Hope this helps!
I also just recently found your very fun-and-educative videos.
Trust me: I already learnt many from them. They are very helpful. And I also take your advice to listen to them again and again and again; it does help me understand more each time (don’t know why).
Please stay healthy during this difficult COVID time, so that you can continue to educate us who are around the world enjoying your videos 🤗.
Thank you very much for helping us learn Spanish.
Oh!! Thanks!! Thant's good to hear!! :))
Hi. I've only just discovered your channel so I'm slowly working my way through each episode. Fantastic. I love your approach......informative and fun. Learning a new language can be quite tedious but you make it pleasurable !!!
The boy is ON the beach but the book is IN the sand.
Nice!!! :) But why is the book in the sand!?!?!?!?! afjaksñfafsñdjafsif eNgLiSh
@@spanishafterhours I can understand how difficult it is to differentiate between "in" and "on" and it can be quite confusing as there are always exceptions to any "rule". Because the book is partially buried i would suggest it is "in" not "on".
"In" is perhaps similar to "dentro" in that it is "inside".
"On" is similar to "sobre"
For example....in the house, in the car, on the roof, on the seat etc
But as mentioned earlier....there are exceptions. English is a much harder language to learn (apart from verb conjugations...lol) as there are no rules...unlike Spanish.
My favourite example......tomb, bomb, comb are pronounced differently even though the only difference is the first letter . Very bizarre !
Your English is fantastic anyway...as is your personality. You are doing a fantastic job and you make it so much easier for a 68 year-old like me who finds it difficult to learn new things....or as we say in England.....it's difficult to teach an old dog new tricks.
I moved to Valencia a few years ago and absolutely love the culture, food, the weather (obviously !!!)....basically everything. Cuidate.
Nice!! I see! Because I usually just translate on/in to 'en', but with sobre and dentro I guess it's kind of easier to understand! Thanks for your kind words!! I'm glad I'm able to teach someone with way more life experience than me something new!! :)) I definitely still have to learn a lot of tricks about life!!
@@spanishafterhours the book could be on the sand too, depends on which context you are saying, like if I was stood a far distance away I might say, there’s a book on the sand over there. But if I moved closer then I might say there is a book in the sand
Depends on how in the sand the book is. If it's laying nicely on top, then it's on the sand, but if it's like really shoved in there then it's in the sand LMAO .
Ah, finally a guide to Spanish prepositions. The Spanish confusion with 'on' and ' in' when they speak English makes sense. I think the part about time approximation in ' hacia' is definitely cultural 😄
It's helpful how you are teaching the words in relationship to each other and then in what seems like a natural progression of how they might be used. Thank you.
I'm so not Spanish fluent, so seems bajo = short as a person or low as in a location, maybe bajo can even mean under something IDK. Love your channel.
He is on the beach, but we *usually* say he is at the beach.
Yaaaa see? This is so confusing! Thanks!!
@@spanishafterhours "on" as a preposition of place usually refers to something that has 2 dimensions not 3. You sunbathe "on" the beach, the boat is "on" the sea (the surface), the fish are "in" the sea. If you say "at" the beach you are referring to the general area of the beach but you could be tomando una cerveza en una terraza
@@johnremargayla5131 I was referring to Laura's example: esta en la playa
and she said it would be "She is *in* the beach" which is incorrect. I only wanted to show the difference between "in" and "on", in the same way we sit *on* a chair not *in* or *at* a chair. My American friends agree that if we want to specify where a person is we would say *on* the beach/chair and if we say *at* the beach we mean NOT in the park or the mountains.
yeah my Hispanic friends would always say “let’s go on the car” if we were leaving somewhere
Some people I know say, im in the train, I tell them its on the train, they come back with, but we're inside, maybe...but even if there wasn't a roof, you're still riding ON it. No doubt im going to be making the same mistakes learning Spanish.
I'm so glad that I found this channel.
I've been looking for good Spanish learning videos, and yours is the most intimate out of all the ones I saw. Now I get why people say watching youtubers that speak a target language is a good way to learn a language. Thank you so much for posting videos.
Btw, my favorites ones are the "vlog while learning Spanish".
my dream is to speak spanish as fluent as you speak english fluent :D
I have already gained my confidence in it a lot more than when i was younger so now ik i can do much better
I've only been learning español for four days and it makes me grateful to have found your channel early on! Thank you for doing your best to make language learning fun. I'm Filipino, apparently, we're supposed to learn español fast, but I have my doubts haha. Wish me luck!
hows your journey going
I love your videos! estoy currently learning espanol y es muy dificil haha. Very confusing! I never realized how hard it was for non English speakers to understand the on/ in thing pero I can see how difficult it is haha. I am speaking spanglish to get comoda con using spanish words without having to think too much about it even if I am wrong or using it out of context. Gracias !! Your videos definitely ayuda me MUCHO.
Qué guay!!! Pues has clavado el spanglish! I read it all in one go!! I'm glad you enjoy the videos!! :)) Seeing your comments like this really motivates me to keep making them!!
!Hola Ayanna¡, qué buen idea usar Spanglish para ganar confianza. ¿Cómo está tu estudia de español?
Current = actual. Currently = actualmente.
Muchas gracias. This is exactly what I needed. I can understand why you thought its he is in the beach because that actually makes more sense jajaj. But in English we say he is on the beach.
He is most definitely not " in " the beach ha ha, he is on the beach. I learn from many sources but this is the place I come when I want to learn and feel good at the same time, my favorite teacher by far!
examples: soy DE Ucrania. Vivo EN Bulgaria.
Thank God I found your channel,
Thank you for being on RUclips
I was searching for a professional channel to learn Spanish, I guess I found it..!! ❤️❤️
Gracias. Gran video. Yo suscribo.
The best teacher ever, thx.
"in the beach" cracks me up 🤣 glad that I found super fun & cool & educational channel for my Spanish Learning Journey.
truly the best spanish-teaching videos I've found, thank you so much!
In school I learned a rhyming trick for esa y esta - “this and these have t’s (esta y estas), that and those don’t (esa y esas)
I found your chanel i think 3 days ago... feels like I found a diamond mine ... great teacher plus suuper cute... you have my undivided attention 😁😁😁
Definitely on the beach, but I like the way you say in the beach. It highlights one of the fun, quirky ways that languages differ.
I need short stories especially for the beginners like kids. I belive if i start as possible as at the begining it will be so usefull for me. As a result necesito muchos libros para las hijos para leer as pdf of course.
Gracias por encellarme un poco.Fabuloso..🌹
Io sono studiare Espanico por oi. Gracias por les studiares buenos!
Yeah I think you are right , the book is in the sand but the sand IS the beach so , yeah , in the beach is logically equivalent !
Very useful video. I endeavour to start at the very beginning and carefully re watch all your videos. Now that my skill level has improved, I should get more out of these. 😎
So basic and brilliant! Thank you sweetheart🙌🌸
Me gustan los vídeos sobre aprender español. Yo necesito :3
I love it when you had to get up and get the pencil, jajajaja! Genial video! Eres una buenisima maestra! BTW... no estoy en la playa.
Laura is a good teacher and very pretty 👍🏻
My morning start with ese Bonita senorita,.... Sweet and Charming. Muchas Gracias por ese grande explaination. Esa mut facile to memories ❤️
That spanish rap at the beginning 👌
HAHAHHAHAHHA I WISH I knew how to rap xdd
in the sand at the beach , on the sand at the beach , on the beach , at the beach , but I think that "in the beach" would be rare and maybe literary or scientific usage--Languages get pretty iffy at the outliers. In French there is a book called "Le Bon Usage" , which kind of blows you away at the many unusual ways you can bend French Grammar Rules
Hola! Gracias para el vídeo! Yo quiero estudiar español!
On the beach but in the sea if you are swimming. Of course it would be on the sea if you were in a boat.
Makes sense!! :)
he is ON the beach .. love that is confusing for you too !!
You Y your personality are BONITO! ❤
Thank you 🙏💗
I glanced around my room and came up with this example sentence: La caja verde este al lado de la lampara blanca. y en la mesa de madera.
I made an example sentence that makes sense (i hope it’s grammatically correct) and also is true!!
Loving your videos. Pls continue the good work!
it's usually "at" the beach, to indicate a general location. but saying he is on the beach, it is to say a more specific area of the beach. so it would be something like "he is on crystal beach". the 'on' is for a specific beach. "at" could mean he's doing ANYTHING at any beach. it requires less details
This hacia meaning sounds very trinidadian. I can relate!
Pluuus, I hope you will teach us Grammar, vocabulary, and idioms regularly and put them into playlists.
I can’t imagine not starting with these basic words like what they say at the full CI camp
You do such a great job at teaching. oh my gosh. Thank you!!
Thanks for the great lesson! Off topic but I love your hair cut!
He is on the beach sitting in the sand.
Me encanto tu boca. No sé.
Great video!
In the beach, on the beach? Many times I get those mix up as well. So let's just say he's at the beach. (A la playa) 🤭
Can a lot of the time think of ‘in’ for inside. He is in(side) his house.
And on is like on top of. He is on his car - Por ejemplo
mate just say F**kin instead of Freaking when UR prepared< I am feeling U> jajja
The correct one is at the beach if you say, for example, we are at the beach. You can say in town, in the country, in the city, but at the beach. To make it really confusing, and that's English, you could say I saw him on the beach. One thing that is clear is that you would never say in the beach. In the water, in the ocean, but on the beach (the surface) while at the beach (the location).
The same logic applies in French. Sur la plage (on the beach) and a la plage (accent on the a) to mean at the beach.
Your English is very good
On the beach, in the sea 🙂
Simply Amazing!
I don't care whether it's on the beach, or at the beach. The main thing is that Laura is great.
Aprendo mas, gracias
in the beach would mean in the sand in my opinion, but i would still understand what you ment, on the beach works, but to me i would say ``he is at the beach``
On the beach or at the beach but never in. We would know what you mean but it would sound so funny.
😂😂
I learnt:
Laura es muy bonito
best videos garcias mucho these videos estan mucho sevicial
On the beach.! In the beach means your probably buried in the sand .😰 great vids!
Your lessons are excellent but this one was rapido, muy rapido. Tengo un pregunta. When you want tao ask for a beer in a bar can you say me pone una cerveza? And are there different words for can of beer or s draft beer. Muchos gracias!!!
If you were to say, "he's in the beach," in English, we might be inclined to think he's dead and buried in the sand. 😅
Have you done a video about how to trill the r's ??
- Choco está un perro pequeño. (is It right? Hahah Choco is the name of my dog btw 😅)
(idk if it's right HAHAHA 😂)
¡Muchos gracias! I learned alot in this video ❤️
Yeah!!! I'm so glad you learnt! If you want to say Choco is a small dog, you should say: Choco es un perro pequeño.
And same thing with: That green dog there is my ugly big dog, would be: Ese (remember if you use eso, it goes alone, ese goes with masculine nouns) perro allí de color verde es mi feo perro grande.
Muy bien!!! :))
The book has sand picture or the book with sand pictures
So informative and useful
at the beach, definitely. I tell you as a Russian native speaker!
¡Hola! Gracias para este video. Es muy interesante y me gusto mucho. ¡Adiós!
Very interesente approach.. 👍👍
I don’t know if that’s correct but I tried?
Also thanks for the Great Video
At 7:15 the English translation says: "I only like bog dogs"
bog= pantano
So interesting ❤️
If you're *_IN_* the beach, something has possibly gone very wrong. 😅 ... that is, that would tend to imply that you're buried in the sand.
La palabra que aprende es "FEO"!! (Which is the opposite of you ;) had never seen this word before! /facepalm But also the shapes, because somehow I have gotten away with not knowing shapes after about 2 years of learning Spanish.
And you can say "he/she/they/it" is/are ON the beach or AT the beach. Either are correct and commonly used all the time concerning an outdoors location. Unless it's a forest. We don't normally say "He is AT the forest". Normally it would be "He is IN the forest".
Thank you for all of your amazing videos. Ciao
Alto y bajo - mi amigo es alto y yo es bajo o medio. My friend is tall and I am short or not so short or tall.
Is this correct?
Thanks for this video.
La caja es morado
So actually hacia and sobre, when indicating a time, mean: some time after...? 🙂
Interesting you are so pretty!!!!!❤
2:22 can you explain this a little further because I'm German and I don't know the term, meeting someone around x time. We're always on time.
Yo sé que está recommended to not focus on grammar cuando estamos aprendiendo una idioma nuevo using the comprehensible input method.
muchas gracias
Nada!
Hola, yo soy de Italia y ahora estoy en mi cama viendo tu video :) I hope it's correct lol
on the beach or at the beach
Even at 0.75 playback speed I have trouble keeping up, 😅 but I love her teaching method. If possible, please say descriptive sentences a little slower 🙏
So helpful and motivational thanks for sharing
You are welcome!! :)
