Your review is spot on. We purchased a 2021 Telluride SX Prestige with the tow package back in October. Hands down the nicest new car we have ever purchased. That coming from a family that has owned multiple Honda’s, Nissan, Mazda and Cadillacs. Refined is the word that most often comes to mind when we drive it. That - and with three kids - the space on the inside is amazing. Hands down best in the class.

With an engine that is comparable to the outdated 4Runner with less than 300 hp/tq,...it’s more like “Kia Slowride”. It’s not holding anything, but a weak ass engine. Good gawd that is weak.
The styling of the Telluride looks like a step above its class. It’s handsome, not fussy and the design should hold the test of time. On the other hand, The Highlander is handsome, but it doesn’t punch above its class. I also have a hard time with the rear 3/4 bumper view. It’s almost like Toyota built in the famous “Camry dent” in the rear bumper. The Palisade is also handsome but far more Asian looking. That will appeal to some buyers but the Telluride looks like it could be an American car (which, it is, both in design and build) which has a great appeal to the American buyer. Great review Alex. Keep them coming.
Also the Telluride is overpriced, the base models are going for 50k plus USD, and mid to top trim is in the 60k + ish. That's too much for this segment. It's MDX , RX 350 territory and this is definitely not there yet
I own a Telluride, and you are unfortunately incorrect regarding CarPlay not being fullscreen. There is a toggle in settings to eithe rsplit CarPlay or to make it fullscreen. Unfortunately, the default is split screen which IMHO is the wrong default. Please correct the video.

These things are so good looking for the mainstream segment. They have a premium vibe inside that you simply don’t get in something like the Pilot or Atlas. I looked at a very well equipped EX with Nightfall Package last night and retuned this morning and it was already sold. It’s crazy how well this is selling. Let’s hope they manage to improve on it as the years progress without messing it up (i.e. I had a 2006 Pilot and would have went for a newer model had Honda not cheapened the interior when it was a redesigned - the 3rd generation is better but too rounded and now looks just like a Minivan)
Highlander styling is too complicated in a bad way like GM tends to be. But the badge will make many sales. I like to combine legroom+Headroom+shoulder room to determine usable interior size. Makes decisions even more interesting....
Man you can’t say “but it’s a Hyundai” or “it’s still a Kia” anymore They are making some nice cars now especially this, the stinger, veloster n, Elantra n, sonata n, genesis and the k900, infact Hyundai and kias lineup is starting to be far more interesting and better than Nissan, Mitsubishi,Honda and Infinitis lineup Hyundai and Kia reliability isn’t bad either
OK. So just test drove a Telluride finally! I didn’t care for it…bummer. I’m looking for a boat-like SUV to just saw through the highway miles. Currently doing that with a RAV4 Prime, which I love, but it’s better suited for local driving. I need room. Most trips are family of 4 either going to and from my son’s school with all his hockey gear, or to visit family and with everyone in the RAV4 Prime, it feels a tad small, road noise is apparent above 65, and there just isn’t enough storage…was hoping the Telluride would fill that need, but it didn’t feel isolated/planted/luxurious enough. CAVEAT. I drove the LX trim, but from my reading, it still has the same glass as the SX trim (thermal/acoustic). Not sure the upper trims would change that aspect…the powertrain is great. Nice sound, responsive and plenty of gittyup…I just came away thinking I was better off getting a Chrysler Pacifica PHEV for less money, better mpg, and more useable space…
I never considered Atlas to be a serious contender due to its sluggish engine performance in comparison but your other insights like child seat maneuver in 2nd row has changed my mind. I think between all, Sorento followed by Atlas seem to be quite good proposition. Waiting for Pathfinder's review now, since I heard its getting a 9 speed shift.
Hi alex, ive been following your channel since uffff and i love it , i never miss an episode of your channel 🤗, im from peru and i was wondering if you know if the tellurride is coming to latin america any time? Congrats for your channel, one of the best in youtube
Agreed Alex, no black rims for me! Not sure why they force them on top-end trims. At least give another option. Also, that Atlas SEL Premium R-line is looking really good! 👍👍
Buddy of mine just tried to buy one of these in NJ. The dealer wanted $5k over. On a Kia Telluride. I mean, it’s nice, but come on. He ended up with a Palisade and is happier.
Some of these dealers are taking advantage of the fact there are literally none of these to sell and demand is high. If any kia dealer wants over sticker don't even entertain them just walk out the door. The only reason why it's marked over sticker is because some joker actually will pay it! But the car is only worth whay we as consumers collectively agree to pay for it and that should be msrp!
I gave up on it and got something else. Sure it's priced competitively in theory, but they still don't make anywhere near enough to satisfy demand. So the price difference is quite pronounced when you will be paying MSRP at best (top trims in my area are regularly several thousand above MSRP still), and you can still get the competitors for significantly off MSRP. And that's just the sale price, if you're financing it, the difference is even more pronounced because you won't find low APR manufacturer financing for that one any time soon. Still love it, but not enough to just ignore how expensive it is over the direct competition.
Thanks for a thorough review. I’m puzzled by the cargo room in all vehicles in this class. Using the third row compromises cargo room in the back greatly. If I’m hauling 6-7 humans, I will need much more cargo room than the little space that’s offered. Humans come with lots of stuff. That leaves the only option of going up to a Suburban or minivan.
We miss our Suburban with the 350cc, but the Tule might fill the void, 3rd row optional for the gkids, will appreciate the extra space vs the RX350. Looks like the Korean's are closing on Toyota products,
The ergonomics of the Telluride makes more sense than the VW Atlas as rear facing child seat are for about a year and if someone keeps the vehicle for 5 years kids are going to spend majority of that time front facing making the Telluride more practical
1:20 I agree with you on the Highlander, I’ve thought the same about the Nissan Pathfinder as well. I’d imagine legroom has a lot to do with this. Some models are getting longer and less upright.
Put the V-6 from the Stinger in this with wider tires and I’ll write a check, even as a single bachelor. Though I do hate the taillights and headlights.
I understand why most car companies don't offer the same range of motion and features on the passenger side of the vehicle, because precise positioning, and fatigue are not nearly as big a factor for the passenger, who has much more flexibility when it comes to where and how they sit (or recline). The seats are the same and offer the same basic level of comfort, but a passenger is usually able to find a good position without having to worry about getting the steering wheel, pedal placement, and proper view of the road that make positioning in the driver's seat much more important and less flexible for the driver.
I hate full black wheels too and looks like we have the same taste because I found the rear end of the palisade better than the telluride . But front end of the telluride is gorgeous
I really like the telluride, for a while I thought I was going to buy one. However, I'm not a fan that the SX hasn't been upgraded to full lcd dash, I don't like the split moonroof and dealers here have them marked up crazily over MSRP. The sorento looks good but disappointed the top trim doesn't come with ambient lighting.
@@AAutoBuyersGuide I am so confused between mdx2022 and telluride and somehow like telluride engine and the punchiness. It will be helpful with a video comparing between telluride and mdx 2022
I can’t get over the palisade front end. Let me know is the comments below.. Also... Alex and the Dodge Durango shoe horned into yet another review. Classic.
Great review! I realize I’m in the minority, but I prefer the Palisade for essentially two reasons: 1) I really like the smart blind-spot cameras that come on in the dash where the tach and speedometer rest when the turn signal is activated; and 2) I like the Palisade center console with underneath storage. Admittedly, the Telluride exterior definitely looks better. If the Kia had these two features, I’d buy the Telluride. For now, the Palisade in white and loaded is my choice.
The Telluride is 0.4” longer than a Pilot, so the Telluride is a direct competitor to the Pilot. The Sorento is 7.5” shorter than the Pilot. You combined the sales of the telluride and the palisade for it to outsell the Pilot, which isn’t fair because since the launch of the passport, pilot sales have decreased so you should add the Pilot and the passport together and see how it stacks up against the Hyundai twins. ( Lexus also combines the sales of the RX and the RXL)
If Kia had additional capacity to build these, it would easily be Top 3 in sales in the class. I much more prefer it to the Highlander, Pilot, Atlas, and others. Kia just magically mixed the perfect elements together in terms of amenities, powertrain, style, room, and technology. I believe the Telluride will bring more of the missing items such as the digital cluster, power 3rd row, etc in the mid-cycle enhancement.
First of all, I'm a fan of your reviews. Thank you for all of intelligence. Also I'm a huge fan of Hyundai automobiles since 2007, with the first ever Korean vehicle I have the Sonata. Since then, I never looked at any other brands anymore. I agree with you about the front of Telluride and the rear of Palisade will be perfect designing, but I like the Palisade's interior more than Telluride. Anyway, I don't think Toyota highlander hybrid is fitting for compared with Kia Telluride or Hyundai Palisade. So, please don't mixed it up and confused the followers. It's just only my opinion.
Alex, thanks for the great video. For me, I would like to see the amber tail light turn signal and the dashboard blind spot monitor like the Palisade that changes depending on which side is turned. Oh yeah, there should be another wheel color choice.
Agree w the preference for amber turn signals. But I prefer the Kia center blind spot monitor. I like my steering wheel set low, which usually blocks my view of the left and right dials.
Kia knocked it out out of the park with the Telluride. The only thing I would like to see is a tow haul mode added for towing. My opinion the best crossover on the market!
I don't mind the black wheels on the SX but I despise the black wheels on the Nightfall edition. More to my budget and arguably the best bang for the buck, I recently purchased a 2021 Telluride EX AWD in Everlasting Silver and Black Leather interior that has the much nicer 20" machine faced wheels that compliment the chrome and satin accents.
I like the body styling of the Assent better than the Highlander. I think a comparison between the Assent and the Telluride would be interesting. I suspect the engine and transmission of the Telluride will be better. But I'm not sure about the rest. Wonder which has the better AWD system.
I'll stay with our 2020 Highlander Hybrid AWD model LE. Averaging 37 MPG in the winter and over 40 MPG in summer. Less maintenance as well, no belts to change, i.e. serpentine belt, 3 seats as well. I doubt if the Telluride can get anywhere near that MPG.
It's a very impressive package, but I want a Defender-esque 2 row with a front jump seat option. Active hobbies and not so much just shuttling the kids.
I looked at one in my area and the salesman was like “ no talking the price down on this one because they are in high demand.” Maybe he wasnt bullshttn me.
Hey Alex, great review as always. How do you compare the 3.8l in telluride vs 2.5 t on the Sorento 8 speed dct . I see that that 0-60 numbers are relatively same for both these vehicles. Which engine is good overall in your opinion ?
I agree with you. Black wheels are passé…Odd that you are test driving the top of the line trip and the tailpipe is only on one side…looks like the bumper has a bump where the matching one would go…odd? Great looking vehicle. Love the interior…bummed no cloth seats and all vehicle makers should get rid of fake wood trim/real wood trim. It just doesn’t work on modern cars in my opinion. Leave it on the Model A Ford….Big plus is no turbo. I hate turbo lag, I don’t care how much HP it has…wish they were doing a hybrid or PHEV though…
Prefer the looks of the 2021 Sorento to the Telluride. The Telluride is a little . . . well, to quote Sheldon from BBT, Brobdingnagian. Oy, that is big! - Haven't seen a Palisade in the 'flesh' as of yet.
Speaking of light colors, I’m surprised there isn’t a regulation about daytime running light color. I mean, an amber light on the front usually means “turning”. Sure, the Telluride’s DRLs only flash when turning, but it seems to me that there should be a regulation that DRLs must be white, just to reduce potential confusion.
At first, I didn't like the black wheels, but I have come to prefer that look🚦. Also, I prefer Carmel, Chocolate Brown, and Faded Red leather interiors.

I need an AoA mug that says "Red turn signals, not my preference."
www.aoamerch.com/product-page/save-the-amber-lamps
What's wrong with red turn signals? I actually prefer them since they blend in well with the taillights, which are always red.
@@CumBrianFries that's exactly what's wrong with them. They "blend in well", therefore making them ineffective as a way to indicate turning.
@@BeyondLumination I see, but they're still flashing while you're indicating though. I've never had any issues driving behind cars with red turn signals, could always tell when they're about to change lanes. lol
@@CumBrianFries For me personally, I don't mind if cars have red turn signals. The only requirement I need from cars that do have them is for them to be their own bulb and not double as the brake lights.
Love my 2021 Telluride.

Wowow -- you reallllly do a GREAT job on your videos with great and easy-to-follow stats. Thanks!
22:20 “Fuel economy has never really been Kia’s forte...” I love how you do that in almost every Kia video.
The horse isn't quite dead....
But they have kia forte.. 😂😂
Highlander styling is too complicated in a bad way like GM tends to be. But the badge will make many sales. I like to combine legroom+Headroom+shoulder room to determine usable interior size. Makes decisions even more interesting....
Also factor in the bench length. Not sure about Koreans, but Japanese brands have been known to shrink the bench for better legroom numbers.
I fully agree with you. I dislike the black wheel trend
Man you can’t say “but it’s a Hyundai” or “it’s still a Kia” anymore
They are making some nice cars now especially this, the stinger, veloster n, Elantra n, sonata n, genesis and the k900, infact Hyundai and kias lineup is starting to be far more interesting and better than Nissan, Mitsubishi,Honda and Infinitis lineup
Hyundai and Kia reliability isn’t bad either
Hyundai sales person alert
Warranty is solid too
@Jonathan A yea but the recall was for 2011-2015 models....
imo Nissan and Honda are completely boring now. In terms of mainstream cars anyway - SoKo is where it's at
@Jonathan A source? I have a 2017 kia sportage and I didn't get any recall notice. and btw i had zero issues with car so far.
This might be the most comprehensive review I've ever seen.. Of anything. Thanks!
Made in Georgia!!
Anyone remember the highlander review were Alex’s pants matched with the seat?
Agreed Alex, no black rims for me! Not sure why they force them on top-end trims. At least give another option. Also, that Atlas SEL Premium R-line is looking really good! 👍👍
I beg to differ respectively, the dark rims are really nice, just saying variety is the spice of life eh LOl
Looks like the Korean's are closing on Toyota products,
KIA simply nailed it. Love all the standard features that most brands should emulate.
Why don't you compare it to the Traverse and Explorer?
Simple smart styling inside and out, it should age gracefully.
Kia did an amazing job with this vehicle
The ergonomics of the Telluride makes more sense than the VW Atlas as rear facing child seat are for about a year and if someone keeps the vehicle for 5 years kids are going to spend majority of that time front facing making the Telluride more practical
Also, reliability of the Atlas (and every other VW) is horrible.
1:20 I agree with you on the Highlander, I’ve thought the same about the Nissan Pathfinder as well. I’d imagine legroom has a lot to do with this. Some models are getting longer and less upright.
6.4 and loving the longer driver seat, how about you.
I love the black wheels.
me too plus it won't look dirty as much...
I would hazard a guess that 2022 might bring a few more tweaks.
Classic.
for me that's the only deal breaker
This and the hyundai cousin are realy good. 80% of a mercedes for 40% money
With double the warranty.
More reliability as well. Perhaps not as much as some older Toyotas but for the things this offers for that price, how could I pass it up?
Also more standard features...
I like the black wheels- getting a Black one, with the SX Prestige and Nightfall packages. I can't wait!
Front grille looks hideous IMO
The Telluride does the turn signal cameras now. It didn't for the first year, but does now.
I still see no one yet dethroning the Telluride. We'll see if the coming Pathfinder can take it down.
2022 Pilot/MDX might have a better chance, but by then the 2023 Telluride and Palisade will be refreshed...
Great SUV! I wish Kia would offer the top trim with a second row bench option.
I’m with you on the black wheels. I hate, hate them.
This is such a nice car, I really want them to put a next gen electric powertrain in future models.
Black wheels always!!! To add more to that, the nightfall edition is a must.
Kia knocked it out out of the park with the Telluride. The only thing I would like to see is a tow haul mode added for towing. My opinion the best crossover on the market!
The traverse has 23 cubic feet behind the 3rd row, if I'm not mistaken.
You're right, but try fitting that in your standard home garage.
@@chiemekaa With 4 kids I barely have room for all the bikes in my garage. I'd at least like to fit everyone + luggage inside the same vehicle.
@@chiemekaa 2018 Traverse fits just fine in my garage. 🤷🏻♂️
Agreed!
It's a very impressive package, but I want a Defender-esque 2 row with a front jump seat option. Active hobbies and not so much just shuttling the kids.
Any chance Alex gets to say "Kia's Forte" he takes it lmao
It's starting to get old and predictable...
@@OlJackBurton I love it and use it myself anytime i get!!!

Combined legroom in the Subaru Ascent is 112.5" in case you were interested. About 5" less than the Telluride.
I guess nobody cares about the Ascent the ugliest Subaru there is.

best product review in any category. ever.
Let me guess the cabin noise.. 70db? Alex, there is smth going on with your testing, how come all cars have 69 71 db noise in cabin?
Hehe. And they’re all rated “A”.
Love black wheels except on certain colors eg. navy blue
Hey Alex, great review as always. How do you compare the 3.8l in telluride vs 2.5 t on the Sorento 8 speed dct . I see that that 0-60 numbers are relatively same for both these vehicles. Which engine is good overall in your opinion ?
So which one is the best for reliability, the Kia Telluride or the Toyota Highlander? Thank you for your videos. Roger.PS Happy New Year!
Toyota Highlander is definitely more reliable.
Really?? Shame on you for questioning Toyota's reliability... they've earned that from decades and decades of refining their products
Non sliding door minivan. Still really nice looking. Hope they get their quality issues figured out.
I could be wrong, but black rims wouldn't show road dirt & grime as much compared to chrome/silver-colored.
I agree, Black wheels are played out. Especially gloss black. A satin silver would look better.
Any concerns about long-term carbon buildup on the Telluride's GDI engine?
Thank you for the in depth review. Planning on getting a white one and a can of spray paint to change the color of those black wheels.
Make this a plug-in hybrid and it’d be amazing.
Prefer the looks of the 2021 Sorento to the Telluride. The Telluride is a little . . . well, to quote Sheldon from BBT, Brobdingnagian. Oy, that is big!
- Haven't seen a Palisade in the 'flesh' as of yet.
Best review as usual!👍
I like the front end looks and spacious interior.
Wow, incredibly informative video. Nicely done.
Alex, I think it's safe to say that the new MDX has taken the crown in 2021.
