Loving the videos! Glad you enjoyed the afternoon tea, York and the countryside around it is a lovely area (a friend of mine got married around there). I'm a Norwich resident, if you fancy somewhere a bit different Assembly House in Norwich does themed afternoon teas (I went to a unicorn one, the latest they've got is a Wizard of Oz one, they also do themed cocktails). Also Norwich is home to the award winning Grovesnor Fish and Chip shop and the High Sea, which is like an afternoon tea but with fish and chips.

Unless you're posh, people in England don't tend to have afternoon tea, nearest thing we have is a mug of tea and some biscuits. When we went to York when I was a kid we used to go to a cafe not far from Betty's, but it was a lot cheaper 😂

Hiya. Too many grand places for afternoon tea in London to be able to suggest just one. However, wherever you think of going a) book well in advance - you'll probably have to, anyway and b) when you book, ask if there's a dress code. Most places suggest or expect at least 'smart casual' but some, like The Ritz, have a strict, specific dress code policy. You might have to take out a second mortgage, too, but then it IS a special occasion, after all. Stay safe. All the best to you.

There used to be companies that would do trips to London. It included a trip on the London eye, a short river cruise, and then tea at a hotel.

Afternoon tea in London....if you google it comes up with ideas. The best need pre-booking. The atrium up in the Shard sounds interesting if you can handle the height. Our daughter took my wife for her 70th birthday treat to the Ritz hotel. Expensive, atmospheric, even the lady on the next table took Champagne with her cucumber sandwiches! I would prefer the Shard option.

Don't ever feel as though a place is 'too fancy' for you - it's sandwiches and cake at the end of the day - enjoy it and have a try at making your own when you're home . I can recommend British cheeses - there are lots and there is a flavour to suit everyone .

@@lizmorse2066 I would , however, recommend smarter clothes. At least a jacket for Jeremy,( and maybe a dress?,) in the Grosvenor. It's more 'up market ' than Betty's but you'd really love it .Don't EVER feel 'out of place'. You are NOT !! The atmosphere, such as the background piano, is just for the added ambience and to make the experience more special. You're just eating cake and sandwiches, and Betty's staff are friendly and welcoming. Relax and enjoy it! Betty's has no dress code . We have taken our 2 (now Adult ) sons to Michelin Star Restaurants, for VERY special occasions, since they were about 4 years old ( we've always insisted on great table manners. They've always made us proud. ) The first time, they were 4 and 8, and the Staff were shocked but polite. It was for lunch and they behaved impeccably. So much so, that the Chef created special ' mice' ,made from potato and vegetables, for their plates and introduced himself to them. One now says he's not comfortable in that atmosphere.( Because he now has arthritis and is wheelchair dependent!!!) NO, he is as good as ANYONE ,and I say "please just relax and enjoy the food" It's the experience. The Staff at all the Restaurants, have always been impeccable in their manners and Service. Very welcoming and friendly. Enjoy yourselves. These experiences remain special, in all of our memories, as they will be for both of you

My friends and I treat ourselves to an afternoon tea once or twice a year. Our go to place is the South Lodge hotel in beautiful rural Sussex. It is pricey (and we often up-grade to add a glass of English sparkling wine from the Nyetimber vineyard - better than many champagnes imo). We love to dress up for it (although many don't) and make an occassion of it.
Never feel 'out of your element'. Most places are pretty casual now (apart from the super fancy hotels in London) and I'm sure they rarely have any kind of dress code.

Afternoon tea at the ritz is a famous and very posh place. The deserts are to die for. The finger sandwiches were smoked salmon and cream cheese, cucumber and egg mayo with cress. Large fruited scone with jam and clotted cream, plus cake and lemon tart au citron. Could barely walk after but it was an amazing experience for a northern lass.

Really lovely video and so glad you enjoyed it. Traditional afternoon tea in many places can be expensive but an experience... nothing wrong with doing a bit of posh when on holiday! However the food and the teas taste so much better if one dresses for the occasion... (JOKING!) A family tradition in the UK is "High tea" on Sunday afternoon... As a Yorkshireman we knew it as a "Yorkshire tea" (not the tea bags!). There's a bit of a variation from what "southerners" eat, but the for the life of me can't remember what it is...??? all I remember is the table groaning under the weight of the food!!! Oh, and the huge anticipation for the trifle at the end! Anyone else remember that? Once again; so glad you experienced and enjoyed it!!!

Cheese and chutney/pickle, that is a British staple. Anyone who hasn't eaten it, whether posh or poor, hasn't really visited Britain and had tea. I'll take any variety served but at home, for tea, it's usually a hearty slice of mature cheddar and Branston on our home-baked bread - us being posh but poor. Great with a cool glass of Spitfire pale ale too.
Your next visit will have to include some brewery tours. I grew up near Burton, so I'm instinctively a Pedigree man (been known to enjoy a pint of Bass), but when you start diving down into the world of ales, there's so many really nice pints from local breweries.
In fact, it'd be worth visiting a decent pub when England are playing to get a whole new atmosphere. Very different from Betty's.

Try having afternoon tea at home... that's how we do it here in Northern Ireland. We don't stand on ceremony but many of us think tea tastes better from a China cup or mug and a teapot is essential in my view... no dipping teabags in a cup! Put a tablecloth on the table, use good bread, proper Irish butter and fresh ingredients for sandwiches and bake your own pastries and cakes. Stay safe and God bless. Vera

Good to see you enjoying a proper afternoon tea. This type of tea is only had on special occasions, and for most households died out decades ago. So it's special when it is served like this.
You did well to ask the server about how best to have it and the dessert fork, in good places they're happy to advise. You can learn table etiquette easily as many of us Brits had to when we're growing up. The importance of 'table manners' was a major thing growing up in our family, so you were equipped to fit in and feel comfortable in any social situation, however formal or relaxed. And as international cuisine became more popular we've had to learn how best to eat other dishes - with forks, hands, chopsticks etc. You did well! 👏

We call this “high tea” here in Melbourne Australia. It’s very much part of Australia’s British heritage. It is really an “event”, and most people dress up a little for it. The food you had looks incredible! I don’t think it’s too fancy for anyone who enjoys the experience of it - life’s too short, so enjoy every moment.

Just discovered this. Will now subscribe to your channel!
We love Betty's. We have been to all of them (Ikley is our nearest so we pop along there frequently). But we love all of them. York, Harrogate, Northallerton, Harlow Carr (both the actual tearooms and the outside cafe in the gardens - Harlow Carr is a gardens. It's an amazing place to wander round and admire, plus gift shop, plus plant selection area ....).
You put your cream on the scone first, then the jam, I noticed. There's a bit of an 'argument' over the correct way! Many people also put the jam on first then the cream. We do it that way. Neither way is wrong - just different!
So glad you got to enjoy Betty's. They are obviously a Yorkshire institution. And a throwback to the days of genteel 'dining'. They also do mail orders by the way.

Awwww I adore having an afternoon tea. Loving your vlogs and your enthusiasm for everything!
I'm finally back over in the States in 6 weeks ( and counting ) Orlando is calling 😆 and I love how amazing you Americans do theme parks, and get justxas excited mooching in your supermarkets and trying different food...as you guys do here!
    Take care guys x

    Great stuff guys.
Many London top hotels that do afternoon tea used to demand a shirt and tie as a minimum preferably with a jacket or suit.
It may have changed but i suspect not

Have eaten at Betty’s in York once, but it was so long ago now - don’t remember much about it, but don’t think it was afternoon tea. However, I have had afternoon tea in the Pump Rooms in Bath (which is next to the Roman baths) and that, I imagine, was a similar experience with sandwiches, scones & cakes and music from a pianist or string quartet.
Also felt a bit out of place, but on the other hand - what the heck 😊 It’s all an experience 😊 and I’d certainly do it again.

Yes, for sure the pump room in Bath was lovely, I did it in the 90's, I doubt it has changed, price apart. Last time was the Tudor tea rooms in Plymouth's historic Barbican, I came over to the treat with my English family & Aussie cousins visiting too.

@@russcattell955i I just came back from a weekend break to Bath and had afternoon tea at the Pump Room. It was stunning food and very chilled with a trio of amazing musicians. In my opinion one of the best places to experience afternoon tea not just because of the quality but also the historical significance of the place itself!

Don’t let the atmosphere get to you just enjoy the experience! As for London I recommend Fortnum & Mason in Piccadilly. They’re the Queen’s Grocers don’t you know! Look forward to the video

That did look very fancy! If you head toward the Midlands again, Thomas Oken Tearooms in Warwick next to the castle is excellent and has a great loose-leaf tea menu and giant scones. It's a little charming place rather than feeling really fancy.

You could do a Betty's crawl - add Harrogate, Ilkley and Harlow Carr! When I was a teenager, my friend & I, used to occasionally go to Betty's Northallerton, on our way home from school, in our uniforms, for cinnamon toast and hot chocolate. Our special treat - we saved our pocket money.

Afternoon tea is a bit of a tourist thing now, unless you're in high society! For the rest of us its also a treat to go to these places. Glad you enjoyed the experience. Maybe in a 'usual' English home setting you'd be feeling more relaxed!

Well done for going to Betty’s. Part of my childhood and younger life… but the one in Harrogate is, in my opinion, even better.
There are some great places to have afternoon tea near us in the Southwest…
I do not know if you can get Afternoon Tea on the train anymore. But that used to be the height of opulence!

Classic afternoon tea follows the same format anywhere in England. Bottom layer a selection of delicate sandwiches often including speciality ingredients of whatever region you are in. Middle layer cream scone, top layer little sweet fancies of some kind. No need to feel out of your comfort zone this is a classic special treat for people of just about any background.

I had once in the Coal Exchange in Cardiff, a Gentleman's Afternoon Tea, it had sausage rolls and pies on it, plus mini burger. They do the traditional afternoon tea there also, but the Gentleman's one was a nice change from the normal. Would recommend, plus it's just a great hotel to stay in.

If you get to Southport near Liverpool at any point, you should check out the Westminster Tea Room. It has a really olde-worlde ambience, everything in it is genuine vintage stuff - the cutlery, crockery, everything - and the music there is provided by an actual gramophone playing old 78 records.
They have a strict no-hard-sell/up-sell policy too, it's absolutely focussed on the guests relaxing and having a great experience.
