- Jack Boothman becomes the first Protestant President of The GAA.
Jack Boothman has served at various senior positions within the GAA. He has risen from Secretary of his local GAA Club in Blessington, County Wicklow to being selected for the top job as President of the organisation.
"Pretty awesome task but still I am delighted anyway to be in such a position."
As President of the GAA he faces many controversial decisions. Should the GAA allow their grounds be used for soccer? Should the ban on GAA membership by members of the Northern Ireland Security Forces remain?
While in many ways Jack Boothman is a typical GAA member, he will be the first Protestant to take the position as President of the organisation.
An RTÉ News broadcast on 8 April 1994. The reporter is Alasdair Jackson.
Does nobody seem to remember that Sam Maguire himself was a Protestant?
