What a terrible and dark time in his life. Thank goodness he survived and his story turned into a big successful song! 💞
Much of his life has been dark times. Read his book, it's pretty good. I didn't know that he was that bad of an addict for so many years.
@@Rob-dp3vr I have read his book.
I've always thought it was a very positive song
The book scar tissue is so in depth and honestly disturbing. But top 3 best books I've ever read.
Speed balls at like 16 or around that age.. blows my mind he's still alive
Blood Sugar Sex Magik is, always has been, and always will be my favorite album of all time. It's one of those albums you can listen to from start to finish and never want to skip a song. The level of originality, creativity, and funkiness on that record is unparalleled.
I Concur!!! 🙋🏻♀️ 💯 💯 💯 💯 👍🏻❤️❤️❤️🎸
That whole album just kicks ass from beginning to end.
Same here!!
Their most recent albums since John has returned are pretty rad!
I loved it since I was a kid of 10 years old. Even my mom absolutely loved under the bridge.
Honestly, I'm not a Red Hot Chili Pepper's fan, but, this is what makes you so good at what you do Michael......you've taken a subject and have presented it so amazingly well, that one can't help but be drawn in to the story. This is so well done!
So many things must've happened under that bridge. Fading memories that will one day get lost in time.
Damn that clip of John singing under the bridge in the studio was just wow beautiful
His mums church choir sings that bit in the recording.
@@AllOuttaBubblegum123 uhh what? That’s amazing?
Yeah I agree, it's absolutely incredible to get a chance to watch him him "directing" his mom and those two other women on the vocals for the bridge section, as well as hearing John's beautiful Acapella in that video. I strongly suggest that you check out the Funky Monks documentary if you haven't yet. That's where that video clip is taken from and there are so many gems and incredible moments captured on camera from the Blood Sugar sessions.
@Nick Dominguez yeah. The funky monks doc is on you tube. I got the vhs when it first came out. It's an awesome look at the creation process of Bssm.
they're my favorite band but I gotta say John is definitely the better singer of the two
It's not just phenomenal that you did this video, but also how you told the story!! You two always put the utmost effort into everything you film, & it definitely reflects. Thank you both for another awesome Grimmlife Collective adventure, keep on doing what you do & happy 2023!!😁✌
This one touched Home..I lost my best friend to an overdose, and though she loved all their songs, Under the Bridge, was her favorite. .Thanks for sharing.
I lost many friends of mine to drugs (mostly heroin). I'm so very grateful to be alive at 40 and have such a great family who loves me.
Throwing in another bit of factoid. The T-shirt Anthony was wearing in the video made a statement about his life. It had the words "To Hell And Back" written on it. The shirt is from a Punk band called D.O.A. & the song "To Hell And Back" is on their 1987 album "True North, Strong & Free".
I can’t even think of the 90s without the Red Hot Chili Peppers as part of the soundtrack of that era.
I once played kick the can with Anthony not knowing it was him. Somebody else asked me ‘how was Anthony’? ….that’s when I found out. Happened in 2015, and even though I love his music I really didn’t recognize him.
One of my favorite bands of all time thank you so much Michael and Jessica for this you guys are amazing!! Keep up the wonderful work
I was 14-15-16 when Under the Bridge came out. I was in a local band and drugs were around, Under the Bridge was a HUGE warning to me to stay way from H and nearly all drugs. So for that Anthony saved me.
Excellent job telling this story. People probably don't realize how much work you put into producing a video like this! Thank you for your work!
Thank you Missy. Happy Halloween.
I started reading Anthony’s book Scar Tissue on New Years Eve. I couldn’t be happier that you made this video. It really brings his story to life. Thanks for making it! 🎃
Good book! Flea's is good, too.
I was scared for you Michael! What a great outcome to such a sad time in his life. Hes still with us and what a mark he has made. RHCP are one of the best bands ever. Excellent storytelling Michael.🎃🎃
Another homerun guys , You paint a wonderful picture and were made for this genre. Grimms rock !
Always taking it to new levels!!! Thank you for giving us something a little new!! Long live RHCP
I remember this video when it came out and this is what made me more of a fan of them. This is one of the best videos and Anthony is captivating with his beautiful hair. This band is truly one of the best bands ever in my opinion.
Wow man great video. Never been a big fan of the band but that song kind of hits home, we all have our own demons to fight. Anyway God bless you brother for walking down there and taking us on the adventure.
I believe that’s the bridge. LA weekly reported on it as well. This has to be it!
That would be so cool if Anthony watched this video and said "you found it" 👍🏻
What a fantastic video mate. Big fan of RHCP and a veteran bass player (and retired London policeman). There are many of these places in London... sad, dark, emotionless places but if you don't belong, they can be deadly. That feeling you got when you were there I totally understand that feeling as I used to get it every time I went "Under the bridge" either as a musician or as a copper. Love people, love life. Thanks for sharing this with us my friend. Peace.
As a 25yr heroin addict, now 10 months clean thank you for telling this story n going the extra mile... Literally
This is one of my favorite videos you've done so far. Music history is rich in that area and Id love to see more stuff like this one dude! Great editing as always. Cheers!
I love every video you make. This was not on my radar but I’m so glad you took the time to tell this story.
I have Anthony Kiedis book Scar Tissue and this book made me fall in love with reading again. I believe in the book he says they didn't perform at the awards but it's been a while so i might be wrong! Great video, rhcp is one of all time favorite bands!
NO WAY!!!!! Michael you are a fabulous investigator. My most precious childhood memory revolves around that song. (On a school day trip in UK we went to a coastal town, me and a friend escaped to find a house that Jimi Hendrix once lived at, we then got thrown off the bus for singing Under The Bridge).
Love love love this vid 💗 🤘🏻
My favorite band since I was 13 - thank you for covering them. And as always, thank you for being respectful of the subject, locations, and people. You both are never intrusive or go into areas just for views, which is why I keep subscribed!
omg that’s where i grew up! after school i’d walk under that bridge to go home everyday, i don’t recall any suspicious activities but then again what did i know i was only about 10 years old lol. awesome video 👏🏽👏🏽
You have grown up to be a very beautiful woman can I marry you in the comments section?
Most of does places are usually the safest in the City. Maffia controls so people don't get out of line and bring attention from the cops.
A powerful song!! Anthony K poured his soul out!! Mad respect, love that whole album!! Thanks for braving that area to film this Michael!! Glad you were safe!!🙏🏽🎃👍🎼🎸
Thank you for the video man !!!🤙
I love this type of videos
but for a long time i thought that the bridge in the song (at 1:24sec original Vid), which doesn't have to be the bridge where kiedis took the drugs, is the belmont tunnel.
Was apparently an old subway station
Greetings from Germany
I am not a RHCP fan anymore but I used to a super one. I knew the group with the song and video "Higher Ground". Their proposal was so fresh, original an vibrant that they got me and I knew right away that the band was about to boom and they did.
It’s hard to believe that there’s nobody out there while Grimm is looking. It’s hard to believe Grimm’s all alone.
Thanks for the video❤️
Yes for RHCP dark lore! I know what you guys mean by how they are mostly very funky musical artists and it makes me think about one of their other songs Porcelain which is one of my favorites; the tone is completely different to their usual-very solemn and melodic but I digress some of the best songs have the most heartfelt stories behind them ❤
🎶 Drifting and floating and fading away🎶
Porcelain is such a sad song and a complete outlier in Californication. No song in there was as sad as that.
I used to love watching this video on mtv back when they played videos…..my favorite part was when the chorus was sang and it showed anthony running!!!!…….by far my favorite chili peppers song ever!!!……….thank you sir for bringing back great memories
Thank you for the adventure. I'm 43 and I had the casette single I played on my Walkman over and over. I always had a picture in my mind of what that nasty bridge would have looked like and it surely did not disappoint. Behind that wall is probly a house of horror like no other. 🧡🖤 from Ohio! Who Dey! Keep up the great work!
MTV played this video seemingly every hour on the hour back in the spring of 1992. I still like the song because it reminds me of that time when rock music was changing. Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers and alternative rock was in vogue and all the glam metal bands that had been so popular a year ago were suddenly uncool.
You could hear the sincerity in the delivery and the lyrics of the song: Under the bridge downtown/Is where I drew some blood/ under the bridge downtown/ I could not get enough...I threw my life away. It didn't take a literary genius to figure out the song was about loneliness, despair, and drug use, specifically a warning against turning to drugs to numb pain.
Anthony Kiedis confirmed this in a Rolling Stone interview. It was such a different message than some bands of the era that seemed to glorify the use of hard drugs. Kiedis even warned fans not to go looking for the bridge because it was in an area that was awash in gangs and drugs even thirty years ago. At least I can visit it vicariously through Grimm Life Collective.
Happy Halloween as always.
Thanks for putting my store in your video
I had no idea that was your store until someone said something the other day. Fitting. Hope you are well. When are you coming back to the US?
I know it’s a sad occasion to talk about about this but I LOVE the Red Hot Chili Peppers ever since I was 9 years old. I’m 32 now and I still get stoked everytime someone talks about this bridge. Keep up the good work :)
Awesome video. Man, I can't believe how much time has passed since when this video first came out. Kinda makes me feel old.
I know what you mean. Living this video for the past couple of days has got me thinking about just that.
A lot of great albums released that year.
This was a good one. If it is the same bridge, nice tracking it down to find it.
Ok thats another one on my long list of Grimm certified locations to visit when I get to LA.
Another great video, thank you for covering this. Also, thank you to you and Jessica for the awesome personalized photo you two sent me.
Awesome video man, more like this.
Version I’ve heard is Kiedis left to go score drugs and didn’t come back in time and they had someone else stand in for him.
Either way awesome video, great story telling, and good call not going under the bridge.
Redhotchilipeppers , Alice In Chains soundgarden, stone temple pilots Pearl Jam , Nirvana all my growing up bands . ❤
All amazing bands.
You must have been born in the 70’s like me ❤
Spooky Spooky yall 🌶
Thank you Grimmlifecollective, for your time and for another one. ☮️
I’ve always been a RHCP fan love their music great video Michael great topic to talk about
Thank you for taking us to the bridge ~ It's a great song by the Red Hot Chili Peppers 🌶🌶🌶🌶
Under the Bridge was the first song I got hooked on by RHCP. It was in the early 90's, I was at a Water Park in the wave pool and that song was blasting over the park speakers. Thinking about it takes me back so hard. I miss those days. Excellent vid! ❤
Awesome job bro, it’s amazing how you can take just a little piece of a story, and create a masterpiece out of it, AWESOME.
The first bridge is in FALLING DOWN!!lol awesome video
This is a great Red Hot Chili Pepper history and story! My mom heard of them and she really enjoyed it. Keep up the good work Michael!
I can’t believe this video is only 17 minutes long and yet you manage to really explore the depths of this topic. You’re very talented and I find myself inspired after many, many of your videos.
I was turned on to RHCP back in 1986 when the movie Thrashin came out.
There is a spot in the movie the band plays black eyed blonde .
Check it out if you haven’t seen it.
Your work is amazing! Red Hot Chilli Peppers is my favorite rock band, and when I listened to this song for the first time when I was a kid, I allways wondered what it was about! And I was very impressed about the dark story! I'm happy for Anthony that he survived those dark times!
You would enjoy AK's auto-bio book, incidentally it also gives a detailed glimpse into 70s SCal. hippy life which he experienced when living with his father. Pretty interesting all around.
Probably my new favorite video of yours! Thanks so much for doing this! Also wish you could of walked a little into that open gate area for a quick second just to see how it looks now.
Thank you for this great video once again! One of my all time favorite bands and I want to send out a shout out to all the people watching who have lost someone to an od it's a serious problem. ALSO, to those who have been there and came out alive. Let's Keep going!
Excellent work and excellent music. 👏 🤘 You keep getting better and better!💯👏
Those with the most to give especially in the music industry seem to be the most internally tormented, I think this is what makes their music more inspiring and that's what touches people's hearts and soul's.
I believe the red hot chili peppers are one such group of entertainers that have a number of tortured souls.
Great work as always Michael....
Just when I think my life can't get any more Grimm 💀 you put out a video like this.. 😗
My uncle used to be best buddies with Anthony’s sister, she apparently hated her brother during the time when Anthony was deep into dr*gs. Im glad that the chili peppers have all found what’s important to them and have been sober for a while. I love the group so much
I am so glad you took jessica's safety in consideration..... I've been the fan of the song for a long time......
Cocaine was my drug of choice, been sober since 2019 because of Bands like RHCP. Music can heal as well as save lives. Grateful for the musicians who can put our emotions into a work of art.
Genuinely enjoyed this episode. Well done, friend.
Decades ago in my drinking days some guy sort of forced me to try coke in a little bathroom. I hated it because it ruined my alcohol buzz. #GratefulToBeSober
Well, I guess that's great ...or not?@@treetopjones737
Thanks for a great Video once again.
I'm going to the Chilli Concert here in Melbourne Australia on the 9th of Feb.
Regards
Sally
This video was really amazing and loved hearing the history of this song and seeing the location
Definitely one of my favorite videos you’ve made so far. I’m a 3rd generation Angelino and there is so many amazing music history locations here. Please do more!
@grimmlifecollective
I'm so excited!! I'm going to meeting you guys at "Days of the Dead" in Atlanta in a cpl of weeks. Sooo totally stoked!!
Such a interesting video of the peppers. Your research is pretty spot on and the interviews really help bring the video to life in those small tid bits of detail. I wondered why would they section off such a dark place under the bridge that would attract the homeless and drug users then and currently.... Seeing the section of trash and buggie gives the realistic notion that that very much exists and how california comes across much differnt from the fame and fortion you see on tv. Thanks grim for another great video
Love your channel my friend! No bullshit, acting crazy infront of the camera..simple and straight to the point👌
Thank you for watching and getting it.
Great video! I was unaware of RHCP's history. It's quite sad that not only did Slovak die at such an early age, but that he didn't even live long enough to enjoy the national success of his band. It's quite tragic.
Huge peppers fan. Seen them countless times going again this year. Great video. Thanks.
Good you did this, you have the respect for what happened, he was the original founding member of red hot chili peppers, good they did a song in remembrance of a former band mate. Thanks for sharing. Take Care Mike and Jessica.🙏🤘
i love your adventurous nature, michael!! i'm grateful you're sharing LA ✨💜 i'm so pleased anthony made it through his darkness!! happy today 👋🏼
Heroin sucks been free for 15 years .Thanks for this Red hot Chili peppers take me back in a positive way . love this thanks
Wow, interesting. I've listened to that song countless times and never knew what it was about. Thanks for the video.
Red hot chili peppers has always been one of my favorite bands 😁
First song I ever heard of The Red Hot Chili Peppers was Higher Ground, ever since then I've been a huge fan. For the 90s, and I say '90s because that's when they really took off not a lot of people knew of them in the '80s, they were so original with such a distinctive sound and it was really refreshing compared to all the grunge and really, what I thought was depressing music that was being put out at that time. A very original video for a very original band, good job guys, and please be careful doing these videos . Thanks.
You hit it right on brother, Anthony did use to sleep underneath that bridge on Hoover & Adams. I'm a native from Los Angeles and have followed RHCP for many years. You've done your research well, awesome work. BTW, I'd love to collab with you someday. Welcome back to L.A.
Really great video essay, loved how you filmed it. This is such a great song, even though I've never had a drug problem the feelings of lonliness are universal.
This is definitely one of your best videos. Great work.
Awesome video, I LOVE "Under The Bridge", one of my favorite songs ever!
I’m convinced that’s the bridge from the song ! All the clues point out to that bridge ! Thanks for sharing this .
Another great vid guys. Love all the content. The travel, theme parks, movie locations, music all of it. Glad you made it out of the area ok, with no hassle.
Damn your videos just keep getting better and better
I hope the nature of this video keeps You Tube from not allowing you to monetize this content, as it is one of your best. Great work as usual.
11:27 Nice Quentin Tarantino opening the trunk reference. ;)
Thank you for sharing
It'd be nice if he sees this and contacts you. And, if he would take you to the exact spot.
🤗🇺🇲🙏🏆
Great video mate, enjoyed every minute of it. I love the Red Hot Chili Peppers 🇦🇺
The Chili Peppers!! Awesome Band! 😎👍👌
RIP Hillel 😔
Awesome Video! -
I'm glad that He's Sober Now ✊👊 Take care and stay safe. 🍁♈🍁
This was a very important song to me as a younger man. I had just moved from a small town to the city, and it was constantly played on the local rock station at the time .
I didn't know this backstory! Thanks for another great video👍
Happy Halloween 🎃
Great Video, love the RHCP there my second fav band ever, really like the BSSM era but even more so as it ages, JF guitar playing and AK lyrics just make this such an amazing song.
Love all your videos but this in particular is a favourite as the Red Hot Chili Peppers are my favourite band of all time! And as I’m from Australia and can’t easily get to some of these places, it is so interesting to see these potential bridges with my own eyes! Thank you for all your videos but this one in particular. I’ll always picture this bridge now when listening to Under The Bridge…
I had to Google map this. I discovered it's right around the corner from where my wife grew up. That was her neighborhood through the 1980's and she always tells me how rough it was.
That first bridge in MacArthur Park was used in the film Falling Down! Iconic
What an awesome video! The content just keeps getting better and better!
Great job bro! 18th Street Gang, I met a few of them and they were all very cool to me, They essentially ran Hollywood in the 90s and early 2000s
As a huge RHCP fan, I absolutely love this. I've read and heard interviews so many times of AK's troubled period and it's really interesting to see the places and streets that he may have walked; Really interesting! You are very knowledgeable of the area and if you're up for it, I'd love to see you do an episode of AK meeting John Frusciante for the first time. AK and John talk about it on Rick Rubin's Broken Record podcast from 4/1/22. It's a time before John joined the band and was just a fan at a show in Pasadena but this was also part of that time that AK was still going through tough times. They mentioned Perkins Palace, a park, and the stairs of the Pasadena police department, just thought that would be an interesting walk around. Anyway, thank you for this tour! It was great! Subscribed!
I can't believe I've been listening to the peppers for 30 years and never noticed Anthonys lisp.
That's why you're a legend, thank you for this.
