I’ve always loved the name “Dixie” since I played Donkey Kong Country 2 in 1995 (Diddy’s gf and co-protagonist was called Dixie) and as a non-American now I’m learning that that name has a racist connotation? Jesus!
It's because the name is part of the romanticizing of the Confederacy, the treasonous states who rebelled against the United States so they could hang on to their slaves.
AlexRN: There are two ways to look at this, the black and white TV era and after digitization. In black and white media, and lots of color, Dixie was a song that was sung on talent shows, in movies, whether it was and open song or a sly song, whistled as someone walked by. The Confederate Flag was hanging with other government flags in displays, for real and in media. The song "Dixie" describes the "land of cotton", but it's about looking away, "look away, look away". It sounds good with a harmonica.
Apparently, the best theory of were it came from was when Louisiana printed its own money on which at $10 said "ten" in English on one side and "dix" (French for ten) on the other. Traders from Louisiana who traveled up the Mississippi River were called "Dixies" because of their money.
I support whatever they do, but I don’t love the name “The Chicks,” but it’s their decision and I do like the reason and I’ll still be a fan either way.
@w9j15g: Well, what do you know, I didn't know that, and I watch Antiques Roadshow a lot. Sometimes I got my own lots. That might be Roman Numerals, not French. Let me see. un, du, troi, quatre, cinq, six, sept, huit, neuf, dix. You might be right.

They didn't jump Natalie backstage or try to kick her butt for talkin' "too much", even! That we know of... JK. No, but they really stayed true to each other and the music, no matter what...and if Natalie had said that comment about TRUMP, or anyone else today, it would legit be forgotten in seconds!! Think of everything people say nowadays! How many people have expressed utter disdain at Trump? And even the haters against Obama!! They said heinous things and did heinous things at their little "free speech" protests. Like "lynching" a "paper-figure effigy" of "a person who resembled" Barack Obama....Natalie's comment was like the most benign statement I've ever heard: "we are ashamed to be from the same state as GWBush", like, really y'all? That is sooo pointless to get mad at. Natalie never said "d3ath to Bush" or anything, maybe people read way too much into it. if everyones really bout free speech and all their rights and stuff, they'd have let that shit slide and they never would've had an issue. Think about what Nat actually said, she said she's just ashamed to be from Texas, as someone else is, too. That was it. They've consistently been progressive allies, unlike CERTAIN OTHER BANDS
*cough cough*
I became a fan because of what she said. Still a fan.
I have loved them over 20+ years. Never disappoint and have downright impressed me even more today. ❤️ Wooly puddin'... 😂😂😂
Those ladies earned the right to call themselves whatever they want a long time ago. Go Chicks!
Been a fan since they spoke their mind about Bush.
As a progressive northwesterner, I disagree with them dropping "Dixie" from their name. It's almost as if they've "dislocated" themselves. It's not like they're waving Confederate flags all over the place...
LairMistress to each their own. However, I would argue: What does it matter what name they go by as long as they produce quality music?
@@chickensdone1 If it doesnt matter why change it?
Love theses ladies. Looking forward to their new music.
I don't care for country....but I love you!! I suport you 100% your music I will listen too!
I don't care much for country either, but I'm still a Chicks fan, especially when their Bluegrass roots shine through in their music.

My daughters and I love the Chicks. So glad you ladies are back!
I only know about this thanks to the Lindsay Ellis video. As such, mad respect for the Chicks.
Lindsay Ellis is awesome and the video about protest songs had a lot good information
I only discovered her videos recently idk 2 weeks the most. Love them. Somehow I catch myself watching videos about movies I haven't even watched. Like all the transformers videos
Hate to tell sean spicer there was already a band called the, the.
The term "Troops" has become popular but it really should be soldiers because they are individuals and troops dehumanizes them.
Best wishes to you, ladies!
The video to “March March” brought me to tears. It was moving & extremely powerful message of the times we’re living in. Love The Chicks
Honestly, their music just keeps getting better. Truly, these 3 are national treasures
As a woman, I feel "Chicks" is fine. Check out the SF series "Chicks in Chainmail". No weak women there.
The should have changed their name to "Chicks without Dix".
Or if they was a bit daring it could also been: "Chicks with Dix".
Oh!!! "Chicks without Dix"?!!! I'm sorry but I'm gonna steal that one for the rest of my life!!!
Time to make a band made out of trans women called chicks with dix
Icky Hicks works too.
@@pigeon1178 Who says that these are not the dix you are looking for? Now move along!
@@jmp01a24 I hope I didn't come off as deregatory! I'm trans and would, personally, love a few more chicks with dix. We need more representation lol
I love "The Chicks" and think it's the way to go forward. If Ted Cruz doesn't like it, that proves it's the right thing to do.
March, march to my own drum
Best thing that ever happened to them.
I agree. Some, not all artist, will be remembered for songs they sang, The Chicks will be remembered for going against the war machine that led to the disastrous invasion of Iraq. History will remember them not just for their talent but for their strength . No bad.
Can somebody remind Ted Cruz that Trump called his wife ugly?
yeah uh why does Ted the fart smeller Cruz care at all
WELCOME BACK LADIES ! I MISSED YOU AND YOUR MUSIC ! YOU SPEAK FOR WOMEN AND WE NEED A CLEAR VOICE ! BUSCH IS A DUSCH!
Love The Chicks! I don’t care what they’re called; it’s about the chemistry between these 3 women... the music, the vocals, the lyrics. Been a fan since their first album and still am.
Who gives a crap what they are called. They have awesome voices and lots of talent. Have liked them since they began.
They really can sing! These Chicks are AWESOME 👌😍💗
I have always been a fan of this group for their music! True Talent! I learned to admire and respect them for their political views after they stood up against George Bush! My son-in-law was killed in Iraq and my grandkids will never know how much he loved them💔 Never thought I would detest a President more than Bush! Then along comes Trump...need I say more?
You beautiful talented bright chicks, 1st saw you at Lilith Fair 21+ yrs ago. How bout that? Erika Badu, Sheryl Crow, Sarah McLachlan and Natalie Merchant...pul-lease, I've seen 100 live shows, but that Del Mar Lilith Fair was best thing I've ever seen. Go on chicks, just keep going!
Still a class act, would love to see them in Ireland 🇮🇪. They were so right about the Iraq 🇮🇶 conflict.
Missed the opportunity to call themselves "The Chixie Chicks".
I listened to the entire Gaslighter playlist on YT this afternoon and it's awesome! The Chicks are back!
Always loved these cool , talented women. Always loved em- especially “ I’m not ready to make Nice!!”
I enjoy this group! Glad they are still around after country radio stations boycotted their music.
I don't care what they call themselves, I'm just so glad they're back!! They're awesome!!!
I remember that career suicide speech, now the republican president doesn’t support the war. What a circle
Except he did. Only lies that he didn't.
They weren't even the only ones. But if they hadn't done it they would have sold themselves out as humans and women. I just love them for standing their ground.
They weren't wrong then, and they're not wrong now.
@@TarenaD They were wrong to be women with opinions apparently.
@@iansampson2477 Bingo
Nat was unpopular in school because she attended in a conservative community and consistently argued with students about Gay and Minority rights. Her entire life being the better person has caused her backlash. That's why she was never phased by "fan" backlash.
Kudos for the name change!!! Great statement on behalf of the South!!! The Chicks? I don't know? The Southern Chicks would've been great too?
I don't care bout the political views - everyone has a different opinion. I luv their music & I can't get enuf of it
Ok but not all opinions are equal. Some are based on facts and some are reactionary ignorance. We all have a right to our opinions, and others have a right to call us out if our opinions suck.
My girls and I have been calling them "The Chicks" for years! Woot!! Love them so much! 💕💕💕
WokeChicks was taken?
The Chicks kick ass!
Yaay...this is the Colbert everyone knows and loves! Clear and loud delivery and just like you do on stage.
These chicks are so generous it brings a tear to my eye... Ted Cruz sooo does not deserve their peace and love. XD
Beautiful talented women...and they apparently have discovered the fountain of youth.
1:40 Colbert: ''Were there other contenders for the name?''
Funny that she says ''Ducks''

Double plus good!
An intentional reference to "1984", right?!

I’ve always loved the name “Dixie” since I played Donkey Kong Country 2 in 1995 (Diddy’s gf and co-protagonist was called Dixie) and as a non-American now I’m learning that that name has a racist connotation? Jesus!
Yes, it's an old nickname for the south of the USA and it's associated with the Confederacy.
It's because the name is part of the romanticizing of the Confederacy, the treasonous states who rebelled against the United States so they could hang on to their slaves.
AlexRN: There are two ways to look at this, the black and white TV era and after digitization.
In black and white media, and lots of color, Dixie was a song that was sung on talent shows,
in movies, whether it was and open song or a sly song, whistled as someone walked by.
@@jayfrank1913 Could also be for states south of the Mason-Dixon line, but only the confederates really tried to hold onto the name.
So Dixie Cups are now just...Cups?
You guys are ahead of times!! Hail to the “Chicks” 👏👏👏
What true moral courage actually looks like. Admirable and inspiring. Representing some of the best of what this country could, and can, be.
I support whatever they do, but I don’t love the name “The Chicks,” but it’s their decision and I do like the reason and I’ll still be a fan either way.
Love them, and love their spin off project "The Court Yard Hounds"
Loved the Dixie Chicks! Hate the way they were ostracized in the early 2000s for criticizing Shrub.
How's "the chicks" offensive?
Caged Cruz and Spicer are trying to take the position that “chicks” is an offensive term to refer to women.
How is Dixie offensive?
According to my wife, it's not. That's just Cruz bring an idiot . Sean Spicer, I think he knows how to laugh at himself, hes got some intelligence.
@w9j15g: I heard some roosters were beakin' off about it already.
*"THE MASS OF TRUMP LIVES LIFE IN TWITTERED DESPERATION."* - - d.d.w. 7/16/2020 = )3
They were canceled before it was cool.
Love The Chicks, especially Nathalie with that strong no nonsense personality and of course those vocals.
LOVE these ladies! I’ve missed them!
I just got the chills knowing March March was written two years back. So awesome having this interview. This is WHY I continue to Love Colbert. He gets it! I loved the chicks and am so happy to share them with my little girl. Thanks "Chicks." Love the new name. I have been a woman in male-dominated career field in most of my career. I also have been a lead singer in many bands. I named a group of 3 women I WORKED with at my job the Dixie Chicks, we covered the South. We were the top performers in our division. It has been an inspiration to watch these women kick butt in the Country Music World of were being Liberal is not the norm.
always loved them. always called them "The Chicks" love from NZ and Aussie
Great musicians! Hey Ladies!
It's fantastic when I see southerners "coming out" liberal .. Lol It was a dirty word when I was growing up in Tennessee, and now I know lots of us were in hiding together.
The fact is they are such good friends, and so tight as a group, that even though it was NATALIE speaking her mind (lol), Martie and Emily didn't flinch. Too much at least. I know in their documentary, Martie or Emily mentioned just thinking, "Oh boy..." but they didnt initially get backlash for 24 hours or something... but the sisters were chill as always.
Y'all Chicks haters ain't ever been ashamed to be "associated" with someone, or felt "guilty by association" and voiced your feelings about it?? I mean...!!!
