@Pat McCann Yes, her father was heavily scorned by his father for showing the "weakness" of normal friendship with others his age, and for enjoying boating and flying. The adoration of personal liberty and responsibility, especially its American embodiment, always had that subtext of "f*uck you, got mine". Trump has made that subtext way more explicit.
I went through a ton of emotional abuse by my father and mother. That said, I don't think you should give Donald an excuse for his bullying, immature behavior. He's a scumbag and regardless of what you went through as a child, it's time to be an adult and take accountability when you're like 25.
I've always loved the line from "Roseanne": "The statute of limitations on parental crime runs out when you hit 30." But even so, that's not altogether true. Someone raised in an emotionally abusive home thinks that's the way things are, that's the way people are, that's the way you should be. They have no comparison until they start school, and even then they're too young to realize, and profound damage is already done. If you pulled yourself out of that I think you're an incredible person, and I know other people who have (including a guy who was physically abused by his parents and yet is STILL an absolutely outstanding father), but I can see where some people so screwed up so early on just never get straightened out.

I love it that she has a guitar behind her on a stand in every interview, AND IT'S A DIFFERENT GUITAR EVERY TIME. This one is a classical, nylon strings, a previous one was an acoustic (metal strings, black body). Cool!
I've known a few wealthy families like that (once upon a time I had a boyfriend with very wealthy parents.) Their kids were so messed up. In so many ways their parents still behaved like kids, as in they'd go out and away with other wealthy parents very regularly, and paid their kids' way through school and out of trouble. Some of the kids ended up on drugs, the "successful" ones worked for the parents, and that's when they received the attention they'd never had. This sounds so familiar.
Sadly, I can. This type of abuse is occurring across all types of households. Probably people you know. It takes people like Mary and her Dad to break the family cycle of abuse.
@@GeraltBosMang It's not about sympathy, it's about understanding for our own sake. The fascism is a consequence of everything Mary Trump is describing and it's actually a very textbook situation when this kind of abuse is paired with power. If we could prevent that children are raised in toxic, dysfunctional, abusive environments, there would be much fewer Trumps in the world, especially in powerful positions. In a way it's sad the book is about Trump bc a lot of people will dismiss it as just another round of entertainment or "money-grabbing scheme" by the family of the buffoon-in-chief, when in reality, we could all learn a lot from it about these patterns of abuse and where they lead - especially since the past 4+ years have been a real-life case study we all have been witnessing.
Of course that's the protocol for people who aren't related. I heard a story once that, right after he became president, Dwight Eisenhower got a visit from a long-time friend who'd always called him "Ike," and got a sense of how seriously his life had changed when his buddy called him "Mr. President." But I think people who are related are exempt from that.
Eh, that assessment kind of fails to acknowledge the problems that existed before he was elected. American Democracy has basically been on life support since the Patriot Act passed...Trump is just pulling the plug.
@@sandpiperr It's been degraded for far longer. Ever since Ayn Rand distilled narcissism into a "philosophy" and (uniquely, as the rest of the world has generally discarded Objectivism) many Americans adopted its tenets, the US has only drifted further toward plutocracy - with a brief setback during the Great Depression, but it's certainly reestablished itself in the following years. Donald Trump is a symptom of a broken social model that holds that the pursuit of infinite personal wealth is the only true good, that corporations have as much as or more rights than people, and that spending power should be proportional to political power.

Having read her book in less than a day, I have to ask- Has 45 treated his kids the way his father treated him and his siblings? If the only parenting model he knows is what he experienced, has he passed it down to the next generation of Trumps?
Deturte, Balsonaro, Modi, Xi Jinping, Kim Jong Un. This man lacks both emotional and intellectual intelligence to deal with 3rd grader, let alone an authoritarian government.
Nobody is equating intelligence and government force with being Good or Ethical. You think Putin has been President this long by being stupid??? And yes, his powers are pretty all compassing in Russia. He can make his political enemies "disappear" and he about to give himself ANOTHER term as president. How is her statement inaccurate in any way? If you think she's praising these totalitarian leaders, your mistaken. But I think you already know that and are just making a bad-faith argument.
The first movie adaptation of Thomas Harris' book Red Dragon, Manhunter, had a line from the FBI investigator chasing the killer that sums this up; My heart bleeds for him, as a child. Someone took a kid and manufactured a monster. At the same time, as an adult, he's irredeemable.
Thomas Harris' books are some of the best literature of our times. Such beautiful words put masterfully on the page. I wanted to travel to those places after reading his descriptions! I should read them again!
It has been fascinating & frightening to read Mary Trump's book and then watch Donald Trump in action and you see so much more going on that we couldn't have understood before. We saw an inept, stubborn, hateful person -- yes -- but now you see how he can't be any other way. He's literally incapable of being any other way. Incapable of pretty much everything but bluster and hate. It's hard to believe that's possible, but seems to be.
That’s a very good point. We want him to be better/more than he is and are outraged over and over again when he isn’t. But he’s incapable of being anything other than what he is.
Easily the most riveting thing I’ve seen and heard on this show or anything else Steven Colbert has done. I’m reminded of David Cavitt at this moment. The other interviews I saw with her didn’t demonstrate nearly this level of in depth, expert analysis. She did in fact come off as a disgruntled relative, but here I see that even if she weren’t a relative, her expertise on this particular subject would be invaluable and it’s strengthened many times over by her personal experience as a member of the family.
WE get the leaders WE deserve! She hit the nail on the head when she said he doesn't see a need for help, and the people around him are content to let him be.
And of course, being a bus driver would be a perfectly good and honorable job too. But that guy didn't want his kids to be happy in whatever they did -- he wanted them to be Fred Trump. (I'm curious, in a morbid way, about Fred Trump's upbringing.)
So basically I figure, whenever Donald encounters a strongman he is sucked back in the relationship he had with his overbearing abusive dad and turns into small Donald, who does best to please his dad and mimic him. On a subconscious level he probably would hate this and would be acting out his frustration the only way he can: acting confident, mimicking a strongman and bullying the weak. He probably needs to be a narcissist to be able to survive. If this is how it is, i kind of pity him.
I’ll hope he gets help ONCE he is out of the White House and not effecting the lives of millions. I feel like a full psych evaluation should be done on would-be presidents. To make sure future ones don’t have “daddy” issues and cozy up to dictators in the future. However, I do think that his stint as a president has been good in us being able to see where the weaknesses are in our system and, hopefully, can be mended.
@@SayNoToAuthoritarianism I think there should be a psychological evaluation as with every criminal case to determine his accountability. His enablers and coconspiritors should be held accountable for creating such a mess. I do hope the USA does learn from this. This isn't good for America or the rest of the world.
Very good conclusion. As a person concerned to this in my own family, I know how difficult it is. As you already said - the problem with narcissistic people is that they would never admit to need help - that would confirm their "weakness" and they would do anything not to feel this powerless as they used to feel when they were little. It is a tremendous issue nowadays. What I also got to know is a horrible black-and-white "view of the world" (if you can say so), of people (and of course of myself which had a deep impact on my self-esteem): either you're great or you're an absolute loser. (I hear Trump say : "It's gonna be great"). Yeah, it would be absolutely necessary to "test" someone if he's mentally stable before running for president (and also before becoming a parent!!). I cannot understand why you have to do this in other professional branches but not in this powerful function!

It is refreshing to actually hear someone in the family, as close as it can be within the family circles to analyze this president. I am sure Trump is going to go into damage control, as he's done in every other situation.
Trump is apparently the inevitable outcome of American "exceptionalism." I've been reading "Fantasyland: How America Went Haywire" by Kurt Anderson. Right from the days of El Dorado-seeking Elizabethan explorers and waves of Puritans reinventing God in their image (repeatedly), the US has been operating on "If it makes me money it's good" and "If I want to do it it must be right" and "My fantasy is better than your fantasy." Reality and logic need not apply. I love your comments, by the way, and always scroll down for them.

Being a decent, intelligent, erudite and generally competent human being seems to have made Mary the black sheep of the Trump family.
The only Trump family member we know of who possesses a correct conscience.
@Pat McCann Yes, her father was heavily scorned by his father for showing the "weakness" of normal friendship with others his age, and for enjoying boating and flying. That part of the book had my jaw on the floor. Really brings home what a soul-destroying environment it was to grow up in. It's tragic her father was never able to fully separate himself from it.

This was an excellent interview. The one with Geroge Stephanopoulos was okay, but Colbert's questions really led her to offer us some deeper insight into his behavior. Granted, none of it is surprising. But it was more detailed than I'd heard before.

Its been on the internet for quite some time though. I think there has only been one or two instances where I've seen it mentioned on tv.
We have to be careful about diagnosing someone we’ve never evaluated in person and doing so in public, about the president is a huge risk and a violation of our ethics. Believe me, I and my colleagues have had numerous discussions about Trump and his psychopathology.

The most important question over all is: what is wrong with a society who elects a obvious sociopath?
Yesssss! That's ABSOLUTELY the most disturbing part.
The adoration of personal liberty and responsibility, especially its American embodiment, always had that subtext of "f*uck you, got mine". Trump has made that subtext way more explicit.
The electoral college made that happen. He got the minority vote from the people.
@@krissee6961 true. But still, almost half the people, who voted, choose him.
The inadequacies of the U.S. Constitution has to do with it.
I don't view her explanations as an "excuse" for Donald's behavior, but rather as an explication of the root causes of his behaviors.

Wow, I just noticed the pineapple on her book shelf!
Thanks to Colbert for a great interview. And to Dr. Trump for her book.
Sad his children are perfectly happy to let him be so deluded.
Well,it's convinient for them, why would they try to change that?
It's quite simple, they don't want to get cut out of his will. It's all about the Benjamins my friend! 😉
That assumes he'd listen to them, he'd probably call them fake news.
If you had someone as emotionally broken as Donald as your father, I don't think you would develop the skills to understand why he's so dangerous.
None of them are smart and brave enough to put him in a home.
Jesus, the picture she paints is terrifying. I can't imagine the emotional abuse in that family.
I can imagine, we are all as a country feeling the emotional abuse by this fake president. Nov 3, my friends.
Don't be overly sympathetic because he has already begun rolling out fascism with deploying his own army.
I find it funny that she just straight up calls him, "Donald" while everybody else calls him, "Mr. President or President Trump."
I have never called him president, much less Mr. president. He is trumped, as in cards.

I have never called him anything but trump
Melissa Burch I have called him other things....

@@sandpiperr It's been degraded for far longer.

That’s what malignant narcissism does.
